In this study, the effect of stacking sequence on the flexural and fracture properties of carbon/basalt/epoxy hybrid composites was investigated. Two types of carbon/basalt/epoxy hybrid composites with a sandwich form were fabricated: basalt skin-carbon core (BSCC) composites and carbon skin-basalt core (CSBC) composites. Fracture tests were conducted and the fracture surfaces of the carbon/basalt/epoxy hybrid composites were then examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the flexural strength and flexural modulus of the CSBC specimen respectively were ~32% and ~245% greater than those of the BSCC specimen. However, the interlaminar fracture toughness of the CSBC specimen was ~10% smaller than that of the BSCC specimen. SEM results on the fracture surface showed that matrix cracking is a dominant fracture mechanism for the CSBC specimen while interfacial debonding between fibers and epoxy resin is a dominant fracture process for the BSCC specimen.
The development of the Hantan river basin can be divided into three stages. The first stage include the ancient Hantan channel system prior to the Chongokni basalt which yield dates of about 0.6 mya from the K/Ar dating method. During this period the Baekuyri formation was formed. The Baekuyri formation is widely observed under the Chongokni basalt along the current river system. The second stage is the period when stream channels stayed on the top of the basalt plateau. Aggradation and deggradation were continued by meandering and braiding channel systems until major stream channel was formed. The currently remaining deposit on the top of the basalt was formed by lacustrine and fluvial systems in this period. During this period Pleistocene hominid was present on edge of water and flood plain and left Paleolithic material. This period was begun at the time of the final basalt flow dated about 300,000 BP. The third stage is designed for the time when the Hantan river channel was dropped down to a level from which the channel could not influence the top of the basalt any more No more deposit could be formed but erosion by surface water has been continued on the top of the basalt since then. The dropping of the Hantan river channel was probably not very long after the final flow of the basalt. Because of frost action and heavy concentrated precipitation in the basin area along with blocky and clumnar joint structure of the basalt, erosional process of the basalt is believed to have been carried out within a relatively short time. The lowering of the Hantan river channel was probably completed in a cycle of major fluctuation of world cimate. Also, the redclay on the top of the basalt is believed to have been formed during a warm period around 200,000 BP, which accords with the climatic change suggested above fair1y well. The Paleolithic materials in tile deposits fell accordingly into approximately same time period.
The waste basalt might be recycled in concrete, resulting in energy saving and environmental protection. An half Factorial Experiments were performed with the variables of W/C ratio, S/A, Crushed stone/Basalt ratio and Slump as a preliminary study for optimum mix design of concrete. The results show that the W/C ratio is the most important factor to the concrete strength. The substitute of waste basalt up to 100% has little influence, saying that it can substitute the coarse aggregate without damaging the concrete properties.
This study reports petrography and geochemical characteristics of the basalt lava flows in Seongsan-Ilchulbong area, the easternpart of Jeju island, Korea, to understand the evolutionary processes of magma. Basalt lavas are classified into the Pyoseon-ri basalt and the Seongsan-ri basalt. The Pyoseon-ri basalt is dark-gray colored with many vescicles, and mainly consists of olivine, feldspar and rarely of clinopyroxene as phenocrysts. The Seongsan-ri basalt is largely aphanitic basalt and bright-gray colored, divided into two lava-flow units: lower lava flow (B1) and upper lava flow (B2) by the intercalated yellowish lapillistone and paleosol. The lavas plotted into sub-alkaline tholeiitic basalt and alkaline basalt series. The tholeiitic basalts have characteristically higher $SiO_2,\;FeO^T$, and CaO contents, but lower $TiO_2,\;K_2O,\;P_2O_5$ and other incompatible elements compared to the alkali basalts. The tholeiitic basalts have higher $SiO_2$ to the same MgO contents than the alkalic basalts. The contents of Ni, Cr, and MgO show a strong positive correlation, which indicates that low-MgO phases like plagioclase and titanomagnetite were important during the differentiation of magma. The contents of incompatible elements against that of Th show a strong positive correlation. The chondrite-nomalized REE patterns of tholeiitic and alkalic basalts are subparallel each other. LREEs contents of the former are lower than, but HREEs contents are similar to the latter. They both are similar to their K/Ba ratios. The primitive-mantle normalized spider diagram demonstrates that the contents of Ba and Th of all basaltic magma are enriched, and yet Cr, Ni are depleted. The tholeiitic and alkalic basalts may be originated from a different degree of the partial melting of the same mantle material source, and one shows a higher degree of the partial melting than the other.
The purpose of this study is to determine the petrology of basalt and the volcanic process in the Seondol cinder cone, Seobjikoji area, eastern Jeju Island. The Seondol cinder cone is mainly composed of spatters in the lower part, pyroclastic deposits including reddish brown blocks, ashes with volcanic bombs in the middle part, and dark black scoria deposits in the upper part. The volcanic sequences suggest volcanic processes that progress through Strombolian eruption and end with Hawaiian lava effusion which breached the cinder cone northwestward and extended over northwestward as lava delta and basalt emplaced as a volcanic neck in the central part of crater in the cinder cone. The age of basalt lava flows is about $95\;{\pm}\;3\;ka$. The basalts belong to transitional basalt and show products of fractional crystallization of clinopyroxene and olivine from a parental basalt magma on the basis of variation diagram of major, trace and rare earth elements. Basalts in the region of this study are plotted at the region of within plate basalt.
A basaltic tuff formation (Upper Basaltic Tuff of the Janggi Group) occurs in close association with basalt (Yeonil Basalt) at the Tertiary Janggi basin. The purpose of this paper is to describe the occurrence of the basaltic tuff and associated basalt and to determine their mode of formation. The basaltic rocks of the study area show few distinct lithofacies, all of which are originated from the interaction of basaltic magma with external water. The four lithofacies include (1) sideromelane shard hyaloclastite, (2) pillow breccia, (3) entablature-jointed basalt, and (4) in-situ breccia. The sideromelane shard hyaloclastite constitutes most of the Upper Basaltic Tuff and has a gradual contact with the pillow breccia. The pillow breccia consists of a poorly sorted mixture of isolated and broken pillows, and small basalt globules and fragments engulfed in a volcanic matrix of sideromelane shard hyaloclastite. The entablature-jointed basalt occurs as a small body within the hyaloclastite. It is characterized by irregularly-curved joints known as entablature. The in-situ breccia occurs as a marginal facies of entablature-jointed basalt, and its width varies from 10 to 30m. The result of this study indicates that the basaltic tuff and associated basalts of the study area were produced by the volcanic activity of same period and the basaltic tuff was formed by subaqueous eruption of basaltic lava followed by nonexplosive quench fragmentation.
In this paper the influence of fiber orientation of basalt and carbon inter-ply fabrics on the flexural properties of hybrid composite laminates was experimentally investigated. Four types of basalt/carbon/epoxy inter-ply hybrid composite laminates with varying angle ply orientation of reinforced basalt fiber and fixed orientation of carbon fiber were fabricated using hand lay-up technique. Three point bending test was performed according to ASTM 7264. The fracture surface analysis was carried out by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results obtained from the four laminates were compared. Lay-up pattern of $[0B/+30B/-30B/0C]_S$ exhibits the best properties in terms of flexural strength and flexural modulus. Scanning electron microscopy results on the fracture surface showed that the interfacial de-bonding between the fibers and epoxy resin is a dominant fracture mode for all fiber lay-up schemes.

The objective of this study is to compare compressive strength and rebound number of Schmidt hammer of concrete using basalt aggregate to that using granite aggregate. And is to provide the reference data on the standardization of nondestructive test of concrete. According to test results, compressive strength of concrete using basalt aggregate is highly estimated under the same rebound number compared to that using granite aggregate about 5~15%. It is urgently that newly suggested estimation formula of compressive strength using basalt aggregate must be prescribed because estimation formula of compressive strength of concrete using basalt aggregates overestimates the strength compared to that using granite aggregate.

This study investigates the flexural properties of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) reinforced basalt/epoxy composites under conditions with and without moisture absorption. The basalt/CNT/epoxy composites were fabricated using 1 wt% silanized MWCNTs and kept in seawater for over 4 months. The flexural properties of the moisture absorbed specimens were evaluated and compared with those of dry specimens. The flexural properties of basalt/CNT/epoxy composites were found to decrease with moisture absorption. The flexural strength and modulus of moisture absorbed specimens were 22% and 16% lower, respectively, than those of the dry specimen. Scanning electron microscope examination of the fracture surfaces revealed that the decreases of flexural properties in the moisture absorbed specimen were due to the weakening of interfacial bonding from swelling of the epoxy matrix.
