  • Ethanol extracts from 46 plants were tested for their fungicidal activity against six plant diseases consisting of Maynaporthe grisea, Rhizoctonia solani, Botrytis cinerea, Phytophthora infestans, Puccinia recondita, and Erysiphe graminis in the greenhouse studies. Strong activity at 5 and 10 mg/pot was produced from the extracts of Helianthus annuus flowers and Zea mays leaves against P. grisea. In a test with B. cineara, extracts of H. annuus leaves, H. annuus flowers, Chrysanthmum coronarium var. spatiosum, Cucurbita moschata seeds, Lycopersicon esculentum, Z. mays, and Z. mays leaves had strong activities at 5 mg/pot. In a test with P. recondita, strong activity was obtained from the extracts of Capsicum frutescens, C. moschata seeds, H. annuus seeds, L. esculentum, and Malva veticillata at 5 mg/pot. Against E. graminis, extracts of Cucumis sativus, H. annuus seeds, Salanum tuberosum, Z. mays, and Z. mays leaves produced strong activities at 10 mg/pot. All the extracts were ineffective against P. infestans and R. solani. Among seven extracts tested, the extracts of H. annuus leaves and flowers were highly effective against all the strains of B. cinerea resistant to carbendazim, procymidone, and diethofencarb. Furthermore, potent fungicidal activity was produced from the extracts of C. coronarium var. spatiosum and C. moschata seeds against the SSR, SRR, and RSR strains of B. cinerea, and Z. mays and Z. mays leaves against SSR and RSR. Extract of L. esculentum showed very strong activity only against RRS of B. cinerea.

  • Through immersing barley seeds (variety; Suwon No. 6) into different dilution of carrier-free P-32 original solution (Total activity; 90mc, To; 3/21) for 24 hours at room temperature, four groups of seeds (each group consists of 200 seeds) having activity levels of 1.6$\times$10-3$\mu$c 32P/grain, 2.3$\times$10-1$\mu$c 32P/grain 6.9$\times$100$\mu$c 32P/grain and 2.5$\times$101$\mu$c 32P/grain respectively, were obtained. To investigate the effects of various activity levels of P-32 absorbed upon the test plants, the seeds were germinated, transplant into the pots, and the growth was observed for three months after germination. After harvest, the inorganic contents in the leaves and the stems were also analyzed. The results: 1) Until four days after the beginning of germination, the rate of germination was found the lowest at the strongest activity level of 2.5$\times$101$\mu$c/grain. At the other P-32 levels treated, it showed generally higher than the control. 2) Before transplanting the seedlings of both 1.6$\times$103$\mu$c/grain and 2.3$\times$10-1uc/grain levels showed more vigorous growth than the control, whereas at the 6.9$\times$100 uc/grain level a retarded growth was conspicuous and all of plants belonging to the highest activity level of 2.5$\times$101$\mu$c/grain were withered owing apparently to the radiation damage. 3) This trend of growth promotion was continnually observed at the low activity levels even after transplanting the seeldings to the pots. As for the plants belonging to 6.9$\times$100$\mu$c/grain level, a clear sign of gradual recovery from the damage afflicted at the earlier stage was observable, and as a result the plants showed more growth than those of control two months after transplanting. 4) The number of stems diverged was found somewhat small in the blocks treated with P-32, compared with that of control until two months after germination. At the later stage of growth there seemed no significant difference among the themselves. 5) The dry weight of leaves and stems was proved that the lower the activity, the mroe it was produced. The relative increase of dry matter in each treatment compared with the control was 2% at 6.9$\times$105$\mu$c/grain level, 9% at 2.3$\times$10-1$\mu$c/grain and 35% at 1.6$\times$10-3$\mu$c/grain respectively. 6) The inorganic contents of the leaves and stems harvested were proved that: (1) Nitrogen was highest at the lowest activity level of 2.3$\times$10-1$\mu$c/grian. (2) Phosphorus showed generally higher contents in the treated blocks than in control, with the peak being at 2.3$\times$10-1$\mu$c/grain. (2) Phosphorus showed generally higher contents in the treated blocks than in contro, with the peak being at 2.3$\times$10-1$\mu$c/grain level in the leaves and at 6.9$\times$100$\mu$c/grain in the stems. (3) These was no significant difference in potassium contents in the leaves between treatment and control, whereas in the stem the treated blocks were higher than control roughly in propotion to the activity level. (4) Calcium in the lesves was richer in treated blocks than control while in the stem no difference was seen. (5) Magnesium contents both in leaves and in stems there was no difference among treatments.

  • This study aims to understand the contribution rate of plant parts on biomass in five winter forage crops including barley, wheat, oat, rye and triticale. In barley and oat, the major plant parts on dry matter yields were changed from culm to spike at 20 days after heading(DAH), but culm was very important part on biomass of rye, wheat and triticales until 30DAH. Wheat, rye and triticales showed same pattern in dry weight increase indicating that culm was main component of biomass from heading stage but spike became heavier after 30 DAR. Barley and oat were similar in dry weight increase where spike was the main components of biomass at 20 DAR. After heading stage the major biomass of most winter forage crops were dependent on the weight of culm and spike, while the contribution of leaves to plant biomass was lower as compared to culm and spike. Thus culm and spike were very important factors for improving the dry matter production of winter forage crops breeding and early maturing is also additively required under Korean climatic condition.

  • In this study, the origin of the monovinyl chlorophyll a carboxylic biosynthetic route was investigated in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and com (Zea mays L.). Protoporphyrin IX accumulated in vivo or in vitro was found to be all of the divinyl form. Furthermore, the conversion of divinyl protoporphyrin IX to monovinyl protoporphyrin IX in vitro was not observed. In contrast, the biosynthesis and accumulation of monovinyl Mg-protoporphyrin IX and its methyl ester occurred in etiolated leaves and divinyl Mg-protoporphyrin IX was convertible to monovinyl Mg-protoporphyrin IX in vitro. These results suggest that the monovinyl chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ carboxylic biosynthetic route in plants may originate from the divinyl Mg-protoporphyrin IX pool.

  • Change of the amount of carbohydrates in relations with nitrogen metabolism was studied under the different manners of supply and with different sources of nitrogen. In barley plant supplied with nitrogen through root, the depression periods of glucose and sucrose content occurred at 2 days after, but the amounts of both sugars were different with the different sources of nitrogen; there were in sequence diminished by treatment of NO3, NH4 and urea. In sunflower leaves sprayed with urea both sugar contents were inversely related to the urea concentration sprayed, and depressing periods of the sugars appeared immediately in the N-deficient plant but late in the N-abundant one.

  • Compositae plants are known to contain biologically active substances that are allelopathic to agricultural crops as well as weed species. Aqueous or methanol extracts and plant residues from leaves of Xanthium occidentale were assayed against alfalfa (Medicago sativa) to determine its allelopathic effects, and the results showed that the extracts applied onto filter paper significantly inhibited seed germination as well as root growth of alfalfa. Aqueous leaf extracts of $40g\;L^{-1}$ were completely inhibitory on root growth of alfalfa, while root growths of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and soybean (Glycine max L.) were less sensitive. Leaf residue incorporation at $100g\;kg^{-1}$ into soil on seedling growth of barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli Beauv. var. oryzicola Ohwi) inhibited both shoot and root fresh weights of barnyard grass by 94 and $96\%$, respectively. Methanol extracts from BuOn and EtOAc fractions of X. occidentale reduced alfalfa root growth more than did those from hexane and water fractions. The results based on bioassay of extracts and residues show that X. occidentale had potent an allelopathic activity against other plant species.

  • To develop a simple test for evaluation crop tolerance to acid rain disks of recently matured leaves of 12 crops(rice, corn, barley, wheat, soybean, adzuki bean, Chinese cabbage, radish, lettuce, spinach, and tomato) were soaked in simulated acid rain(SAR) solutions for 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours. Changes in pH and electrical conductivity(EC) of leaf soaked solutions and changes in the color of the soaked leaves were observed. The pH and EC of leaf soaked solutions differed depending on the pH of SAR, crops, and soaking time. Among the crops differences in pH of leaf soaked solutions were most stable and significant for 1∼4 hour soaking in pH 4.0 SAR solution, but those of EC were for 1∼4 hour solaking in pH 5.0 SAR soultions. Color of leaves soaked in pH 2.0 SAR solutions was changed significantly, but not in the pH 3.0 or higher SAR solutions. Vis-ual damages of intact leaves caused by spray of pH 2.0 SAR solution in the greenhouse was posi-tively correlated with pH changes in pH 4.0 SAR solution, but not with EC changes in pH 5.0 SAR solution or color changes of leaves soaked in pH 2.0 soulution. The pH of solution was posi-tively correlated with Ca and Mg concentrations of the solutions and EC was positively correlated with K, Ca, and Mg.

  • Two distinct and stable isolates of Barley mild mosaic virus(BaMMV) designated as Naju82-S(severe) and Naju82-M(mild) were obtained. These two isolates differed in their symptomatology, virus transmission characteristics and cultivar specificity at various temperature. Thus, these isolates were referred to as strains in this study. BaMMV Naju-S strain showed severe mosaic symptoms accompanied by necrosis on the infected leaves. Naju82-S strain is more virulent demonstrated by shorter incubation period and relatively high virus concentration than Naju82-M strain. Five Korean cultivars were tested for their pathogenicity to different strains based on the rate of infection. Results showed that infection rate of cultivars to both strains did not significantly differed from each other. However, under different temperatures, the pathogenicity on the two cultivars such as cultivars Hopumbori and Sessalbori were significantly affected. Hopumbori was moderately resistant to both strains at $10-12^{\circ}C$ and susceptible at $15-18^{\circ}C$. Similarly, Sessalbori was moderately resistant at $10-12^{\circ}C$ to both strains but distinctly differentiated at $15-18^{\circ}C$ wherein it was resistant to mild strain and highly susceptible to severe strain. Other cultivars including Baegdong, Jinyangbori and Neahanssalbori consistently showed susceptible reaction to both strains at varying temperatures tested in this study.

  • The study aimed to investigate the relationship between the rates of leaf senescence and photosynthate translocation at post-anthesis. Seven barley varieties were observed at Suweon in 1988-89. The varieties differed significantly in the number of leaves survived and the rate of photosynthate transolcation with the progress of grain filling. The rate of grain filling was higher in the fast leaf sene-scencing varieties than the slow senescencing ones. There was a close coincidence between the rates of grain filling and $\^$14/c translocation into grains. Photosynthesis was higher in the fast leaf senescencing varieties at early stage of grain filling, but the reverse phenomenon was observed at the late stage of grain filling. The grain yield of fast senescencing varieties was higher than that of slow ones.

  • Effects of Choline Chloride on growth and yields of sweet-potato cultivated with the single crop and after-barley crop were summarized as follows. 1. The greatest effect was obtained when the sprout-bases of sweet potato were soaked in the solution of Choline Chloride for 24 hours, while the optimum concentration of Choline Chloride was 32.3ppm in case of single crop and 31.1ppm in after barley crop respectively. 2. Choline Chloride restrained the growth of stem; the length shortened and the dry weight decreased. 3. The number of tubers and yields were increased by treating choline chloride. It may be thought that the translocations of assimilation substance from leaves and stem to tubers, was stimulated by treating choline chloride. The tendancy of higher yielding was shown in the early harvesting than in the usual harvesting 4. Sugar and starch content were higher, crude fiber and crude protein content were lower as compared with the control.
