  • The dyeing behaviors of berberine chloride, palmatine chloride hydrate, and Phellodendron bark extract on silk fabric were investigated to evaluate palmatine as another chromophoric substance of Phellodendron bark. The dyeing conditions were composed of combinations of pH (3, 5, 7, 9), temperature (10, 30, 55, $80^{\circ}C$), and time (10, 30, 60 min). The results indicate that palmatine was comparable to berberine in the dyeing behaviors tested for this study and the results were statistically significant. The dye exhaustion and dye uptake of palmatine-CH were slightly lower than berberine-C, which however were not statistically significant. Similar to berberine-C, palmatine-CH favored a pH 7 condition for both dye exhaustion and dye uptake. However, palmatine-CH favors a higher dyeing temperature and longer dyeing time than berberine-C for superior dyeing results.

  • A neutral extract (NE), that is soluble in cold water and has excellent antioxidant activity, from Pinus radiata pine bark was prepared by sodium bicarbonate treatment, and its chemical characteristics were investigated. NE was prepared by treating P. radiata bark with 0.8% NaHCO3 aqueous solution with a 5 : 1 liquor-to-bark ratio at boiling temperature for 1 h, resulting in 44% yield and final pH of 6.66. The yield of NE was 11% higher than that of the hot water extract (HWE) due to the increase in the solubility of polyphenols, the main component in the bark, by NaHCO3 treatment. NE was characterized through FT-IR, NMR, and MALDI TOF MS analyses. The results indicated that NE is mostly composed of proanthocyanidins (PAs) consisting of procyanidin (PC) units. The acetylated neutral extract (Ac-NE) had weight average molecular weight (${\bar{M}}w$) of 5,300 Da. The Ac-NE had wide molecular weight distribution and its polydispersity (${\bar{M}}w/{\bar{M}}n$) was 6 times higher than that of pure PA. The antioxidant activity of NE was determined by 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay and showed that NE had comparable antioxidant activity with pure PA.

  • Leaf analysis was used as a means of diagnosis of unknown apple bark disease. The results obtained from analysis may be summarized as follow; Manganese is one of the most important element in the development of the bark disease. Evidence supporting this view was presented in 1962 by writers. Diseased symtom appears about 904 ppm of manganese and on average, manganese content of diseased leaves was 4 times as high as that of healty leaves. There is a significance between the reducible manganese in soil and the absorption of manganese in diseased leaves. Consequently, the disease should be considered manganese toxicity and may be the same one described by Berg as "Internal Bark Necrosis." In order to prevent the bark disease, plant absorption of manganese must be decreased with increasing soil pH, or by other means.

  • Four year old American ginseng plants (Panax quinquefolium L.) were grown in control and treated field plots in North Carolina, USA. Soil pH (4.4, 5.5, and 6.5), soil phosphate (19, 89 and 232 ppm) and mulch treatments (wheat straw, pine needle straw, poplar bark, oak bark, pine bark and hardwood leaves) were studied for their effects on total dry weight, total ginsenosides and 5 individual ginsenosides (A1, Rg1, Rd, Re, and Rb2). The leaf and root tissue were analyzed for ginsenosides by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). The oak and poplar bark mulch treatments appeared to have the best effect upon the growth and production of roots while not significantly decreasing the ginsenoside content of the roots. The oak mulch showed a statistical increase in the ginsenoside content of the leaves.

  • Paulownia coreana is a medicinal, edible and industrial plant with the largest leaf, and is native to Korea. We evaluated the reducing power activities, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activities (RSAs), nitrite scavenging activities (NSAs) and 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) cation RSAs by solvent extraction of P. coreana bark by using $50^{\circ}C$ hot water and $25^{\circ}C$ methanol. The antioxidative effect of P. coreana bark extract on corn seed oil was evaluated using the Rancimat test. The extraction yields on dry weight basis with 15 folds of hot water and methanol were 23.88% and 5.30%, respectively; further the flavonoid content in the hot water extract was over 2.5 times more than that in the methanol extract. The DPPH RSA of the methanol extract was substantially higher than that of the water extract, whereas the NSA of the water extract was higher than that of the methanol extract at pH 1.2. The ABTS RSAs of the two extracts were almost the same as that of ascorbic acid and 2,6-ditertiarybutyl hydroxytoluene. The two extracts of P. coreana bark in this study were found to slightly improve the oxidation stability of corn seed oil.

  • In the present research, Ficus religiosa Bark (FRB) is used as an adsorbent for the removal of heavy metal Cr (VI) ions. This Ficus religiosa Bark was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope, Fourier transform infrared Spectroscopy, Thermo Gravimetric Analyzer and the results showed that activated adsorbent have high adsorption capacity and withstand even in high temperature. Batch and Continuous experiments were conducted to determine the effect of various parameters such as pH, contact time, adsorbent dose and initial metal concentration. The biosorption followed pseudo first order kinetic model. The adsorption isotherms of Cr (VI) on Ficus religiosa fitted well with the Temkin model. In Batch study, maximum biosorption capacity of Cr (VI) was found to be 37.97 mg g-1 (at optimal pH of 2, adsorbent dosage of 0.3 grams and concentration of Cr (VI) is100 mg L-1). The Continuous mode of study shows that 97% of Cr (VI) ion removal at a flow rate of 15 ml min-1. From the results, selected Ficus religiosa Bark has the higher adsorption capacity for the removal of Cr (VI) ions from wastewater.

  • To evaluate the effect of carbonization temperature of charcoal on the heavy metal adsorption property, Quercus mongolica wood and Larix kaempferi bark powder (100~60 mesh) were carbonized at between 400 and $900^{\circ}C$ at intervals of $100^{\circ}C$. In the properties of carbonized materials which affect the adsorption ability, pH increased with increasing the carbonization temperature, so that the pHs of wood and bark charcoal carbonized at $900^{\circ}C$ were 10.8 and 10.4, respectively. Also, in both materials, the carbon content ratio became larger as the carbonization temperature was raised. At the same carbonization temperature, carbon content ratio of the bark charcoal tended to be greater than that of the wood charcoal. In case of iodine adsorption which indicates the adsorption property in liquid phase, the wood charcoal showed higher adsorption value than the bark charcoal. From the investigation of adsorptive elimination properties of the charcoals against 15 ppm Cd, Zn, and Cu, the higher the carbonization temperature, the greater elimination ratio was. In comparison, the wood charcoal presented higher elimination ratio than that of the bark charcoal. In the wood charcoals carbonized at higher than $500^{\circ}C$, especially, 0.2 g of the charcoal was enough to eliminated almost 100% of the heavy metal ions. Heavy metal ion elimination ratio of the charcoals depended on the kinds of adsorbates. The effectiveness of adsorbates in adsorptive elimination by the charcoals were in order of Cu > Cd > Zn. This is because the physicochemical interaction between the adsorbate and adsorbent affects their adsorption properties, it is considered that subsequent researches are needed to improve the effectiveness of heavy metal adsorption by the charcoals.

  • The stimulated secretion of golden varnish sap by the infection of microorganisms on the bark of Dendropanax morbifera Lev. was observed in the natural habitats. Four candidate strains of such microorganisms(i.e., Sb1, Sb2, Sb3 and Sb4) were isolated from the bark of D. morbifera which was infected in natural. Of them, Sb3 and Sb4 strains showed stimulated secretion of golden vernish sap with the greatest stimulation by Sb4 strains. The yield of golden varnish sap from the bark of D. morbifera was boosted about 3.4~7.7 times by the inoculation of Sb4 strain in compassion with that collected from lacquer tree(Rhus verniciflua Stokes) by the traditional method. The mycelium color of Sb4 strain was grayish white. The optimum growth temperatures and pH were ranged from 30 to $35^{\circ}C$ and from pH 6.5 to 7.0.
