Adenanthera pavonina L. is an important medicinal plant for Indonesian traditional medicine ("Jamu"). The present study is to determine the phenolic content and evaluate the antioxidant activity of ethyl acetate and ethanolic extracts of leaves and bark of A. pavonina. The total phenolic content was determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent methods, and the antioxidant activity was performed by phosphomolybdate assay, through EC50 values. The highest phenolic content (81.379 mg GAE/g) was found in the hydro-ethanolic extract of the leaves and (80.630 mg GAE/g) in the bark. The antioxidant activity of the two samples was 42.270 ㎍/mL (leaves) and 45.261 ㎍/mL (bark). Plants have the potential as drugs with good antioxidant potential and phenolic compound content. Further scientific studies of this plant are supported to evaluate the antioxidant activity using other methods to validate these preliminary experiments properly.
In this study, we investigated on antioxidative activity, antibacterial activity and tyrosinase inhibitory activity in 75% ethanol extracts of bark and cork layer from Prunus sargentii. The total polyphenol content of cork and bark extract was found to be 217.4 mg/g and 184.3 mg/g. And flavonoid content was found to be 31.9 mg/g and 58.6 mg/g respectively. In DPPH radical scavenging ability, cork extract was exhibited stronger scavenging ability than bark extract. Moreover, cork extract was showed higher inhibitory activity than bark extract in tyrosinase inhibitory activity. In antibacterial activity, bark extract was showed higher growth inhibition effect than cork extract against tested bacterial strains. In measurement of cytotoxicity by MTT assay, bark and cork extract showed fine cell viabilities(95.7~120.9%) against RAW 264.7 cell.

The root and stem bark of Eleutherococcus spp. is used for the treatment of paralysis, rheumatism, arthritis, diabetes, stamina failure, high blood pressure, etc. This study was conducted to identify botanical origins and to select standard variety of Eleutherococcus spp. with analyzing eleutheroside E content(%) of root bark and that of Eleutherococcus senticosus at different collected area, time, part and grown area. The content of eleutheroside E in the root bark was determined by HPLC, and it was 0.1925% in Eleutherococcus senticosus, 0.1103% in E. chiisanensis, 0.0348% in E. koreanum and 0.0236% in E. sieboldianum. In seasonal change of eleutheroside E content, it was higher in autumn product than summer product in Eleutherococcus senticosus. It also was higher in root bark than stem bark in different part. To investigate eleutheroside E content of root bark among different collected local area in E. senticosus, it was high order to Mt. Deokyu, Hokkaido and Mt. Seolak as a 0.1625%. 0.0493% and 0.027 %, respectively. The growth of Eleutherococcus senticosus was good at grown Unbong (altitude 10m), but eleutheroside E content was high at grown Nogodan (altitude 1, 450m).
Advanced glycation end products(AGEs) are largly involved in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. It is obvious that inhibition of AGEs formation is important in preventing the occurrence and progression of diabetic nephropathy. In diabetes, this reaction is greatly accerated and is important in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications, especially diabetic nephropathy. Therefore, to seek possible AGEs inhibitors in herbal medicines, unprocessed - and processed Magnolia Bark were examined in vitro as basic data for aniaml experiment. The content of magnolol in unprocessed Magnolia Bark was $0.796{\pm}0.072%$, and after processing was decreased to $0.586{\pm}0.101%(p<0.01)$. The content of AGEs was measured by their intrinsic fluorescence. The $IC_{50}({\mu}g/ml)$ values of aminoguanidine, unprocessed- and procesled Magnolia Bark are $38.845{\pm}8.36{\mu}g/ml$, $54.264{\pm}3.153{\mu}g/ml$ and $27.882{\pm}1.836{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. This result means that prcessed Magnolia Bark was more effective than aminoguanidine, as positive control.
The objective of this research is to analyze a possibility for the utilization of carbonized bark and develop the technique for carbonization of bark for using as the adsorbent, the soil improvement agent, the carrier for microbial activity, health products, and so on. The properties of bark charcoals such as methylenehlue adsorption (MBA), equilibrium moisture content (EMC), far infra rad emissivity, pH, water retention and caloric value were analyzed. The MBA values of bark charcoals carbonized for 8 hr of carbonization time at $800^{\circ}C$ of carbonization temperature for Larix leptolepis, Pinus koraiensis, Pinus rigida were greater than 110 mg/g. The bark charcoals pH values of all three species that were carbonized for 4 hr of carbonization time at $400^{\circ}C$ of carbonization temperature was 6.6 and carbonized for 4 hr at 600 and $800^{\circ}C$ was about 9. Therefore the bark charcoals of those species could be used as charcoals if the carbonization temperature and time were controlled.

Ethanol crude extracts of wood, bark, leaf, and fruit of Callistenwn citrinus were compared for their antioxidant activities based on DPPH (1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical-scavenging activity and reducing power. Bark extract showed the most potent radical-scavenging activity and reducing power, showing 94.1 and 0.64% at 25 and $100\;{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. Total phenolic content of the bark extracts (275.0 mg GAE/g) was higher than those of others. Further fractionation of the bark extract using hexane, $CH_2Cl_2$, and EtOAc showed EtOAc fraction had the highest antioxidant activity ($IC_{50}\;6.7\;{\mu}g/mL$) and reducing power (0.82 at $100\;{\mu}g/mL$), with total phenolic content of 611.1 mg GAE/g. Total phenolic contents correlated with antioxidant activity ($R^2\;=\;0.7061$) and reducing power ($R^2\;=\;0.7399$).
To determine the accumulation and distribution of heavy metals in plants and soils of roadsides, the leaf and bark of Ginkgo biloba and Platanus occidentalis, and the soil were sample from Masan-city roadside and Chinhae forest land in July and November, 1994. The content of heavy metals from all the samples in Masan-city area was much higher than that in Chinhae forest land. The amount of heavy metals in soil was higher than those in plant parts of boty trees. The total amount of heavy metals of the bark was higher than the leaf of G. biloba plants. But that of the bark was less than the leaf of P. occidentalis. Heavy metal content in plants (leaf, bark) varied among elements and collections. The concentrations of heavey metals in both trees were in the order of Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd. The concentrations of the four heavy metals in leaf and Zn in soil in G. Biloba were seasonally changed. Whereas those in P. occidentalis were not significantly changed. And there was a high correlation between the concentrations of Pb and Cu in both trees.
This study was carried out to manufacture bark board from oak bark by new processes and to examine the physical and mechanical properties of the board. This process with no addition of adhesive used higher pressure and temperature than the conventional one and was applied with or without paraformaldehyde. The results are as follows: 1. The new manufacturing process allowed a good bark board with high absorption coefficient. 2. The best manufacturing process for the mechanical properties of bark board was paraformaldehyde 10%-$250^{\circ}C$-100kg/$cm^2$-3 minutes, (bending strength 40kg/$cm^2$, internal bonding strength 2kg/$cm^2$) and the best manufacturing process for both the mechanical properties of bark board and economic point of view was $250^{\circ}C$-100kg/$cm^2$-3 minutes (bending strength 28kg/$cm^2$, internal bonding strength 1.52kg/$cm^2$). 3. Bark board showed specific gravities from 0.94 to 1.03 and air dried moisture content 9.2% to 11.7%, but Bark board needed paraffin wax emusion treatment. 4. The absorption coefficient of bark boards had two peaks along with frequency; one in 200-400 cps, the other 1200-2000 cps. The former was low but the latter great.
In this study, pitch pine (Pinus rigida, PIR) and Mongolian oak (Quercus mongolica, QUM) pellets were fabricated with bark or/and drying waste liquor (DWL) of larch (Larix kaempferi, LAK) as an additive. Based on the results of fuel characteristics of the pellets, optimal conditions for producing the high-quality pellets were provided. In the analysis of chemical composition, bark contained holocelluose and lignin of 90% and over. DWL had 0.1% solid assumed to sugars which are generated from the oven-drying of LAK logs. QUM showed high ash content (2.2%) by containing of bark in the sawdust. Bark and DWL of LAK had high ash content of 4% and over. Calorific values of all specimens and additives were higher than that of the $1^{st}$-grade standard of wood pellets designated by NIFOS (18.0 MJ/kg). PIR and QUM pellets were fabricated with additive of 2 wt% based on the solid weight of oven-dried sawdust using a piston-type flat-die pelletizer, and thus ash content and calorific value of the pellets did not affect by the use of additive. Durability of the pellets increased with the use of additive. Durabilties of pellets, which were fabricated with bark as an additive and DWL as a controller of moisture content for sawdust, did not differ from those of pellets without additives and were lower than those of pellets either with bark or DWL. However, use of both bark and DWL for the production of wood pellets might be favorable because it can make a profit from the collection process of DWL. Based on the results of fuel characteristics of the pellets, QUM and PIR pellets were produced by a flat-die pelletizer. Moisture content (MC), bulk density and durability of the pellets improved with the use of additive. Particularly, sawdust MC of 10% and the addition of bark or DWL for PIR as well as sawdust MC of 12% and the addition of bark for QUM might be optimal conditions for the production of high-quality pellets. Except for the ash content of QUM pellets, other properties of PIR and QUM pellets exceeded the $1^{st}$-grade wood pellets standards of NIFOS.

Objectives : The objective of this research was to investigate the antioxidant activities of stem bark of Maackia amurensis extract. Methods : Stem bark of Maackia amurensis extract were prepared using 70% methanol. Methanol extracts were fractionated to hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, butyl alcohol, water fractions and investigated. The antioxidant activities of fractions was evaluated by four different assays as total polyphenol contents, total flavonoid contents, DPPH(1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) free-radical scavenging activity and ABTS(2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) scavenging ability. Results : The yield of methanolic extracts from stem bark of Maackia amurensis was 10.16%, whereas those of its solvent fractions (hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, butyl alcohol, and water) were 5.45, 11.39, 13.88, 26.07, and 40.80%, respectively. The total polyphenol contents and electron donating ability of 70% methanol extracts from stem bark of Maackia amurensis were 15.44 mg/g and 194.15 μg/mL of its IC50, respectively. The 70% methanol extracts showed the highest antioxidant activity. The total polyphenol content and total flavonoid content of chloroform fractions were higher in each of 201.98 mg/g and 13.55 mg/g. The chloroform fraction showed the lowest levels of DPPH(IC50, 183.95 μg/mL) and ABTS scavenging activity(IC50, 10.0 μg/mL). The antioxidant activity was detected in methanol extract, chloroform fractions. Conclusions : These results indicate that 70% methanol extract and its fractions of stem bark of Maackia amurensis, especially chloroform fraction, have the properties of anti-oxidant suggesting stem bark of Maackia amurensis may be a candidate for natural and functional materials.
