  • Silicene is a two-dimensional (2D) derivative of silicon (Si) arranged in honeycomb lattice. It is predicted to be compatible with the present fabrication technology. However, its gapless properties (neglecting the spin-orbiting effect) hinders its application as digital switching devices. Thus, a suitable band gap engineering technique is required. In the present work, the band structure and density of states of uniformly doped silicene are obtained using the nearest neighbour tight-binding (NNTB) model. The results show that uniform substitutional doping using aluminium (Al) has successfully induced band gap in silicene. The band structures of the presented model are in good agreement with published results in terms of the valence band and conduction band. The band gap values extracted from the presented models are 0.39 eV and 0.78 eV for uniformly doped silicene with Al at the doping concentration of 12.5% and 25% respectively. The results show that the engineered band gap values are within the range for electronic switching applications. The conclusions of this study envisage that the uniformly doped silicene with Al can be further explored and applied in the future nanoelectronic devices.

  • Direct characterization of band alignment at chemical bath deposition $(CBD)-CdS/Cu_{0.93}(In_{1-x}Ga_x)Se_2$ has been carried out by photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and inverse photoemission spectroscopy (IPES). Ar ion beam etching at the condition of the low ion kinetic energy of 400 eV yields a removal of surface contamination as well as successful development of intrinsic feature of each layer and the interfaces. Especially interior regions of the wide gap CIGS layers with a band gap of $1.4\~1.6\;eV$ were successfully exposed. IPES spectra revealed that conduction band offset (CBO) at the interface region over the wide gap CIGS of x = 0.60 and 0.75 was negative, where the conduction band minimum of CdS was lower than that of CIGS. It was also observed that an energy spacing between conduction band minimum (CBM) of CdS layer and valance band maximum (VBM) of $Cu_{0.93}(In_{0.25}Ga_{0.75})Se_2$ layer at interface region was no wider than that of the interface over the $Cu_{0.93}(In_{0.60}Ga_{0.40})Se_2$ layer.

  • As satellite communications services are showing gradual growth, so are the needs for dual or tri-band antennas greater than performance of conventional single-band antennas. In this paper, a simultaneously operable tri-band antenna for SATCOM(Satellite Communications) is proposed. It is different from conventional methods of implementing tri-band through replaceable horns, while it is designed with a tri-band feed assembly composed of corrugated and dielectric horns and reflectors of gregorian type to transmit and receive tri-band of X, Ku and Ka band simultaneously. And simulated and measured values were compared and analyzed for characteristics of the proposed antenna. In the results, radiation patterns of the proposed tri-band antenna were close to the simulated ones and also met specifications.

  • Although there have been lack of studies using X-band SAR data particularly for forestry application as compared to C-, and L-band SAR data, it has a potential to distinguish tree species because most signals are backscattered on the top of canopy. This study aimed to compare signal characteristics of multi-band SAR data including X-band for classifying tree species. The data used for the study are SIR-C/X-SAR data (X-, C-, L-band) obtained on Oct. 3, 1994 over the forest area near Seoul, S. Korea. Thirty ground sample plots were collected per each tree species. Initial comparison of backscattering coefficients among three SAR bands shows that X-band data showed better separation of tree species than C- and L-band SAR data irrespective of polarization. The weak penetrating in canopy layer might be possible source of information for X-band data to be useful for the classification of forest species and cover type mapping.

  • Molecules always show broad absorption band envelopes, and this results from the vibrational properties of bonds. The width of an absorption band can have an important influence on the color of a dye. A narrow band imparts a bright, spectrally pure color to the dye, whereas a broad band can give the same hue, but with a much duller appearance. Typically, half-band widths of cyanine dyes are about 25nm compared to value of over 50nm for typical merocyanine dyes. Thus, cyanine dyes are exceptionally bright. The factors influencing the width of an absorption band can be understood with reference to the Morse curves. The width of the absorption band depends on how closely the bond order of the molecules in the first excited state resembles that in the ground state. We have quantitatively evaluated the "molecular structure-absorption band shape" relationship of dye molecules by means of Pariser-Parr-Pople Molecular Orbital Method(PPP-MO).

  • The Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) has suggested that spatial and spectral characteristics would be suited to evaluate water quality of lake. But, TM has not been commonly used for the analysis of in-land water quality, such as surface water temperature, chlorophyll-a, suspended sediments, and Secchi depth in domestic research. This paper summarizes the analysis of Landsat 5 - TM image collected on 22 Feb 1996 for evaluation of chlorophyll-a and surface temperature in the Lake Soyang. And, field measurements collected in the Lake Soyang were used to obtain water optical algorithms for calibration of satellite data. It is concluded that we can assess chlorophyll-a with remote sensing reflectance and surface temperature with thermal band in lake Soyang. However, surface temperature calculated with thermal band of Landsat TM are underestimated. Relationship between remote sensing reflectance and chlorophyll-a using the ratio of TM band 1 and band 3 is as follows; Y = 17.206 - 6.4711 * (Rrs(band1) / Rrs(band3)) $R^2$=0.8762 and, using the ratio of TM band 1 and band 2 as follows; Y = 57.77 - 35.771 * (Rrs(band1) / Rrs(band2)) $R^2$=0.8317.

  • A dual-band dual-polarized microstrip antenna array for an advanced multi-function radio function concept (AMRFC) radar application operating at S and X-bands is proposed. Two stacked planar arrays with three different thin substrates (RT/Duroid 5880 substrates with $\varepsilon_r$=2.2 and three different thicknesses of 0.253 mm, 0.508 mm and 0.762 mm) are integrated to provide simultaneous operation at S band (3~3.3 GHz) and X band (9~11 GHz). To allow similar scan ranges for both bands, the S-band elements are selected as perforated patches to enable the placement of the X-band elements within them. Square patches are used as the radiating elements for the X-band. Good agreement exists between the simulated and the measured results. The measured impedance bandwidth (VSWR$\leq$2) of the prototype array reaches 9.5 % and 25 % for the S- and X-bands, respectively. The measured isolation between the two orthogonal polarizations for both bands is better than 15 dB. The measured cross-polarization level is ${\leq}-21$ dB for the S-band and ${\leq}-20$ dB for the X-band.

  • We designed an ultra-wide band-pass filter applicable to microwave reflectometry for KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) and to microwave photonics. The proposed ultra-wide band-pass filter exhibits a metamaterial structure characterized by a wide band, low insertion loss, and high skirt selectivity. The proposed filter is applied to enhance the linearity of reflectometry at the output of a VCO (voltage controlled oscillator). The pass-band of the proposed filter is observed at 18~28 GHz, and the out-of-band rejection is below 20 dB. Further, we constructed an unwrapped negative phase of S(2, 1) to verify the characteristics of the metamaterial. The under- and upper-band at lower limits of the pass-band are left- and right-handed, respectively. The group delay of the filter is less than 0.5 ns.

  • The main objective of the study is to offer some basic information in relation to optimal shape and dimensions of the rotating band through the development of three-dimensional finite element method for metal forming analysis of the rotating band whose primary function is to impart spin to the projectile. The three-dimensional metal forming analysis of the rotating band has perfor-med by using recurrent boundary conditions. Such design factors as the outside diameter the total length and the profile of the rotating band must be considered carefully in order to design an optimal rotating band. Above design factors can be determined from such available analysis results as the deformed shape and the deformation load. of the rotating band and the normal pressure of the rotating band on a projectile shell. The remeshings are needed to carry out plastic deformation analysis with severe deformation through which the complete process analysis gets possible. The results can be utilized effectively in determining the optimal shape and size of the rotating band.

  • A wide band design method of an electromagnetic wave absorber using exponentially tapered ferrite which has very wide band frequency characteristics is proposed and discussed. The wide band electromagnetic wave absorber can be designed by the proposed equivalent material constants method for the regions varying spatially in the shape of ferrite. Furthemore the wide band ferrite electromagnetic wave absorbers with taper which have not only excellent reflectivity frequency characteristics but also the band width of 30MHz to 2150 or 2450MHz under the tolerance limits of -20dB reflectivity were designed.
