Energy absorption distribution according to lead shielding for 511 keV ${\gamma}$ ray was evaluated using a Monte Carlo simulation in PET/CT. Experimental method was performed about the depth of skin surface(0.07), lens(3) and the depth(10) was conducted by using ICRU Slab phantom. Difference of energy absorption distribution according to lead thickness and effect of air gap according to distance of lead and phantom. As a result, study showed that using a lead shielding makes high energy distribution by backscatter electron. As a distance between lead and phantom increased, energy absorption distribution gradually decreased. 9 cm or more air gap should exist to prevent effect of backscatter electron which reaches skin surface, when 0.25 mmPb shielding is used. Also 1 cm or more air gap was needed to prevent the effect in 0.5 mmPb. If air gap was not concerned, 0.75 mm or more lead thickness was necessary to prevent effect of backscatter electron.
We analyzed the morphological characteristics of OCC (Ocean Core Complexes) in the middle part of the Central Indian Ridge (MCIR) using high-resolution geophysical data recorded on the Deep-Tow SideScan Sonar IMI-30 system. In terms of slope-gradient variations calculated from the high-resolution bathymetry data, the normal faults formed by seafloor spreading were associated generally with slopes > 30° and resulted in high backscatter intensities, which reflect more topographic effects than acoustic medium variation. However, the areas associated with gentle slopes < 10° tend to show the backscatter intensities reflecting the acoustic characteristic of the medium. We show that the detachment faults exposing the OCCs were initiated with high-angle normal faults (58°) exhibiting outward and inward dips of a breakaway zone. In order to examine the spatial distribution of OCC structures, we characterized the transition from magmatic-dominant seafloor with abyssal hills to tectonic-dominant seafloor with OCC using the down-slope direction variation. The slope direction of the seafloor generally tends to be perpendicular to the ridge azimuth in the magmatic-dominant zone, whereas it becomes parallel to the given ridge azimuth near the OCC structures. Therefore, this spatial change of seafloor slope directions indicates that the formation of OCC structures is causally associated with the tectonic-dominant spreading rather than magmatic extension. These results also suggest that the topographical characteristics of seafloor spreading and OCC structures can be distinguished using high-resolution geophysical data. Thus, we propose that the high-resolution bathymetry and backscatter intensity data can help select potential areas of exploitation of hydrothermal deposits in MCIR effectively.

The ADP is an advanced piece of oceanographic equipment that measures water speed and direction profiles from the acoustic Doppler principle. In recent years, the strength of the acoustic backscatter obtained from ADP has been used to measure vertically suspended sediment concentration(SSC) profiles. In this study, an ADP was installed in coastal waters near Yumsan, on the west coast of Korea, and flow and sediment data were gathered simultaneously. SSC concentrations were calculated from the acoustic backscatter strengths adjusted by using calibrated acoustic coefficients. The observed SSC profiles were compared with analytical solutions and showed good agreement. Simultaneously, the suspended material fluxes were analyzed in detail. ADP was very useful for measuring the vertically distributed suspended sediment concentrations and flow velocity profiles.

The Compton backscatter technique has been applied to lap-joint in aircraft structure in order to determine mass loss due to exfoliative corrosion of the aluminum alloy sheet skin. The mass loss of each layer has been estimated from Compton backscatter A-scan including the aluminum sheet, the corrosion layer, and the sealant. A Compton backscattering imaging system has been also developed to obtain a cross-sectional profile of corroded lap-splices of aging aircraft using a specially designed slit-type camera. The camera is to focus on a small scattering volume inside the material from which the backscattered photons are collected by a collimated scintillator detector for interpretation of material characteristics. The cross section of the layered structure is scanned by moving the scattering volume through the thickness direction of the specimen. The theoretical model of the Compton scattering based on Boltzmann transport theory is presented for quantitative characterization of exfoliative corrosion through deconvolution procedure using a nonlinear least-square error minimization method. It produces practical information such as location and width of planar corrosion in layered structures of aircraft, which generally cannot be detected by conventional NDE techniques such as the ultrasonic method.

In this paper, we describe a measurement technique for the backscattering coefficient and ground truth of a vegetation canopy in detail. A simple microwave backscattering model for vegetation canopies is verified by being compared with this measurement. An R-band$(1.7\sim2.0GHz)$ scatterometer system is used to measure the backscattering coefficient of a vegetated area in the Han-river park for various incidence angles and a wide range of the soil moisture contents. It is found that the model agrees quite well with the measurements for co-polarized radar backscatter, and needs a correction for cross polarized radar backscatter.
Time-selective self-triggering water sampler, AUTTLE developed by Jin et al. (1999) has been improved in order to prevent pre-deposition of suspended sediments (SS) before sampling. By using two solenoids, the improved sampler is able to be moored or deployed with inclination. Its position is changed to horizontal position by activating the first solenoid, and then the endcaps of the sampling bottle are closed by the second solenoid that is driven three times to minimize possible failure of sampling. An external control unit for setting sampling time has been also constructed. Additionally, the electric circuit housing of the sampler has been modified to be detached from the sampling bottle when operating manually. Its performance has been confirmed through flume tests and a field experiment. It will serve as a valuable tool in the various fields of oceanography and environmental engineering, especially where seawater sampling synchronized at several sites and/or the information in storm period is important.
Whereas it is well known that the surface roughness parameters, the RMS height and the correlation length, of a natural soil surface are underestimated with a short surface profile, it is not clear how much the underestimated surface parameters affect the backscattering coefficients of the surface for various incidence angles and polarizations. The backscattering coefficients of simulated and measured surface profiles are computed using the integral equation method (IEM) and analyzed in this paper to answer this question. It is shown that the RMS error of the backscattering coefficients between 5-m- and 1-m-long measured surface profiles is 1.7 dB for vv-polarization and 0.5 dB for hh-polarization at a medium range of incidence angle ($15^{\circ}{\leq}{\theta}{\leq}70^{\circ}$), while the surface roughness parameters are significantly reduced; from 2.4 cm to 1.5 cm for the RMS height s and from 35.1 cm to 10.0 cm for the autocorrelation length l. This result is verified with numerous simulations with various roughness conditions and various wavelengths.
In the present study the microstructure of low-carbon steels fabricated by controlled rolling and accelerated cooling processes was characterized and identified based on various microstructure analysis methods including optical and scanning electron microscopy, and electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD). Although low-carbon steels are usually composed of ${\alpha}-ferrite$ and cementite($Fe_3C$) phases, they can have complex microstructures consisting of ferrites with different size, morphology, and dislocation density, and secondary phases dependent on rolling and accelerated cooling conditions. The microstructure of low-carbon steels investigated in this study was basically classified into polygonal ferrite, acicular ferrite, granular bainite, and bainitic ferrite based on the inverse pole figure, image quality, grain boundary, kernel average misorientation(KAM), and grain orientation spread(GOS) maps, obtained from EBSD analysis. From these results, it can be said that the EBSD analysis provides a valuable tool to identify and quantify the complex microstructure of low-carbon steels fabricated by controlled rolling and accelerated cooling processes.
The contrast (fish body to medium ratio) of density and sound speed were measured to estimate acoustic scattering from small juvenile cod (Gadus macrocephalus) with the Kirchhoff-Ray Mode backscatter model. The density contrast was measured by the density-bottle method and the sound speed contrast was estimated by the time of flight method. The results revealed that the measured density contrasts of juvenile cod varied between 1.003 and 1.029 (mean = 1.014, S.D. = 0.01). On the other hand, sound speed contrasts varied between 1.039 and 1.041 (mean = 1.041, S.D. = 0.001). The relationship between averaged target strength (TS) and total length (TL) established by the model were <$TS_{38kHz}$> = 20log(TL) - 68.8 and <$TS_{38kHz}$> = 20log(TL) - 69.4, respectively.
