Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and ground vehicles (UGV) require advanced video analytics for various tasks, such as moving object detection and segmentation; this has led to increasing demands for these methods. We propose a zero-shot video object segmentation method specifically designed for UAV and UGV applications that focuses on the discovery of moving objects in challenging scenarios. This method employs a background memory model that enables training from sparse annotations along the time axis, utilizing temporal modeling of the background to detect moving objects effectively. The proposed method addresses the limitations of the existing state-of-the-art methods for detecting salient objects within images, regardless of their movements. In particular, our method achieved mean J and F values of 82.7 and 81.2 on the DAVIS'16, respectively. We also conducted extensive ablation studies that highlighted the contributions of various input compositions and combinations of datasets used for training. In future developments, we will integrate the proposed method with additional systems, such as tracking and obstacle avoidance functionalities.
General speaker verification systems improve their recognition performances by normalizing log likelihood ratio, using a speaker model and its background speaker model that are required to be verified. So these systems rely heavily on the availability of much speaker independent databases for background speaker model design. This constraint, however, may be a burden in practical and portable devices such as palm-top computers or wireless handsets which place a premium on computations and memory. In this paper, new approach for the GMM-based background model design used in portable speaker verification system is presented when the enrollment data is available. This approach is to modify three parameters of GMM speaker model such as mixture weights, means and covariances along with reduced mixture order. According to the experiment on a 20 speaker population from YOHO database, we found that this method had a promise of effective use in a portable speaker verification system.

Due to the recent increase of the importance and demand of security services, the importance of a surveillance monitor system that makes an automatic security system possible is increasing. As the market for surveillance monitor systems is growing, price competitiveness is becoming important. As a result of this trend, surveillance monitor systems based on an embedded system are widely used. In this paper, an object detection algorithm based on an embedded system for a surveillance monitor system is introduced. To apply the object detection algorithm to the embedded system, the most important issue is the efficient use of resources, such as memory and processors. Therefore, designing an appropriate algorithm considering the limit of resources is required. The proposed algorithm uses two background models; therefore, the embedded system is designed to have two independent processors. One processor checks the sub-background models for if there are any changes with high update frequency, and another processor makes the main background model, which is used for object detection. In this way, a background model will be made with images that have no objects to detect and improve the object detection performance. The object detection algorithm utilizes one-dimensional histogram distribution, which makes the detection faster. The proposed object detection algorithm works fast and accurately even in a low-priced embedded system.
The presnt study reviewed two contrasting models, fixed-resolution slot versus flexible-resource hypotheses, for the representational characteristics of visual working memory (VWM), and emphasized the necessary efforts for resolving their conflicting arguments. To accomplish this goal, the review explored the background hypotheses of the object-based versus parallel independent storage models, and introduced theoretical bases for their contrasting claims. The review then evaluated validity of empirical evidence provided in the studies to support each model, and attempted an understanding of their neurophysiological background. The study further emphasized the necessity of theoretical and methodological reconsiderations to resolve their conflict as well as the necessity of obtaining converging pieces of evidence to accomplish the resolution.
Background: Microglia produces a barrage of factors (IL-l, TNF-$\alpha$, NO, superoxide) that are toxic to neurons and playa major role in the cellular immune response associated with the pathology of Alzheimer's disease(AD). OJaJiHwangEumJa(OJJHEJ) has been usually used for the treatment of senile disorders. For enhancing efficacy and convenience, the change of the drug delivery device of oriental herbal medicine is required. Objective: This experiment was designed to investigate the effect of the OJJHEJ hot water extract & ultra-fine powder on proinflammatory cytokine of microglia and memory deficit model. Method: The effects of the OJJHEJ hot water extract on production of IL-1$\beta$, IL-6, TNF-$\alpha$, in BV2 microglial cell line treated by lipopolysacchaide(LPS) were investigated. The effects of the OJJHEJ hot water extract & ultra-fine powder on the behavior of the memory deficit mice induced by scopolamine and AChE in serum of the memory deficit mice induced by scopolamine were investigated. Results: 1. The OJJHEJ hot water extract suppressed the production of IL-1$\beta$, IL-6, TNF-$\alpha$ in BV2 microglial cell line and the production of IL-6 was suppressed significantly. 2. The OJJHEJ hot water extract & ultra-fine powder decreased AChE significantly in the serum of the memory deficit mice induced by scopolamine. 3. The OJJHEJ hot water extract & ultra-fine powder groups showed significantly inhibitory effect on the scopolamine-induced impairment of memory in the experiment of Morris water maze. Conclusions: This experiment shows that the OJJHEJ hot water extract & ultra-fine powder might be effective for the prevention and treatment of memory impairment diseases. Investigation into the clinical use of the OJJHEJ hot water extract & ultra-fine powder for Alzheimer's disease is suggested for future research.
Traditional character recognition systems usually aim at characters with simple variation. With the development of multimedia technology, printed characters may appear more diversely. Existing recognition technologies can't deal with Hangul recognition effectively in diverse environments. This paper presents a recognition system for multi-form Korean characters called RSMFK, which is based on the model of Hierarchical Temporal Memory (HTM). Our system can effectively recognize the printed Korean characters of different fonts, scales, rotation, noise and background. HTM is a model which simulates the neocortex of human brain to recognize and memorize intelligently. Experimental results show that RSMFK performs a good recognition rate of 97.8% on average, which is proved to be obviously improved over the conventional methods.

Background: A critical features of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is cognitive dysfunction, which partly arises from decreased in acetylcholine levels. AD afftected brains are characterized by extensive oxidative stress, which is thought to be primarily induced by the amyloid beta ($A{\beta}$) peptide. In a previous study, Cinnamomum loureiroi tincture inhibited acetylcholinesterase (AchE) activity. That study identified AChE inhibitor in the C. loureiroi extract. Furthermore, the C. loureiroi extract enhanced memory in a trimethyltin (TMT)-induced model of cognitive dysfunction, as assessed via two behavioral tests. Rosa laevigata extract protected against oxidative stress-induced cytotoxicity. Administrating R. laevigata extracts to mice significantly reversed $A{\beta}$-induced learning and memory impairment, as shown in behavioral tests. Methods and Results: We conducted behavioral to examine the synergistic effects of C. loureiroi and R. laevigata extracts in inhibiting AChE and counteracting TMT-induced learning and memory losses. We also performed biochemical assays. The biochemical results showed a relationship between increased oxidative stress and cholinergic neurons damage in TMT-treated mice. Conclusions: A diet containing C. loureiroi and R. laevigata extracts ameliorated learning and memory impairments in the Y-maze and passive avoidance tests, and exerted synergistic inhibitory effect against AChE and lipid peroxidation.

Background and Purpose: Episodic memory is a system that receives and stores information about temporally dated episodes and their interrelations. Our study aimed to investigate the relevance of episodic memory to time perception, with a specific focus on simultaneity/order judgment. Methods: Experiment 1 employed the simultaneity judgment task to discern differences in time perception between patients with mild cognitive impairment or dementia, and age-matched normals. A mathematical analysis capable of estimating subjects' time processing was utilized to identify the sensory and decisional components of temporal order and simultaneity judgment. Experiment 2 examined how differences in temporal perception relate to performance in temporal order memory, in which time delays play a critical role. Results: The temporal decision windows for both temporal order and simultaneity judgments exhibited marginal differences between patients with episodic memory impairment, and their healthy counterparts (p = 0.15, t(22) = 1.34). These temporal decision windows may be linked to the temporal separation of events in episodic memory (Pearson's ρ = -0.53, p = 0.05). Conclusions: Based on our findings, the frequency of visual events accumulated and encoded in the working memory system in the patients' and normal group appears to be approximately (5.7 and 11.2) Hz, respectively. According to the internal clock model, a lower frequency of event pulses tends to result in underestimation of event duration, which phenomenon might be linked to the observed time distortions in patients with dementia.

In this study, the usability evaluation of a menu-structure was performed using spreading activation model with respect to human's memory retrieval. Spreading Activation Model is effectively used to understand the process of information retrieval, so it can be used as a theoretical background for modeling of the process of human's information retrieval. For spreading activation test (SAT), subjects were presented with 67 pairs of menu titles, which consist of a menu title in the high level menu item and a menu title for the next lower level menu item, from Korea University's web site. For performance tests, three scenarios were developed with longer reaction times and ambiguous associations found in the SAT to reflect the existing problems of the website. As a result, the SAT was found to bean effective tool to enhance the website usability because the SAT could bea substitute for the performance test with a high correlation $({\rho}=0.735,\;{\alpha}=0.05)$. After remaining menu titles with slow reaction times and ambiguous associations found in SAT, the website usability was significantly improved with faster reaction times and less ambiguous associations proven with smaller number of web-page visits. Therefore, the SAT could be used as a methodology to design and evaluate the user-centered menu structure related to human's association structure.

Recently, due to the rapid performance improvement of smartphones and the increase in background executions of mobile apps, multitasking has become common on mobile platforms. Unlike traditional desktop and server apps, response time is important in most mobile apps as they are interactive tasks, and some apps are classified as real-time tasks with deadlines. In this paper, we discuss how to meet the requirements of heterogeneous multitasking in managing memory of real-time and interactive tasks when they are executed together on a smartphone. To do so, we analyze the memory requirement of real-time tasks, and propose a model that has the ability of allocating memory to multitasking tasks on a smartphone. Trace-driven simulations with real-world storage access traces captured by heterogeneous apps show that the proposed model provides reasonable performance for interactive tasks while guaranteeing the requirement of real-time tasks.
