  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the antique chair style in Korean market. The examined objects were 235 chairs in selected 30 antique shops dealing with curios in Seoul from July 16 to August 23 in 2002. The results of this study was as follows Antique chairs in Korean market are revival style and eclectic style. The revival style are copied or transformed period style antique chairs. The eclectic style are chairs newly designed by mixing of 2 or 3 different types period style antique-chairs. Rococo-revival style were the most prevalent following Renaissance style chairs in the market. In case of chair back and legs the Classic revival style are made by copying and transforming the Klismos, Hepplewhite, Sheraton, which is a neo-classic style. The Gothic revival style are copied or transformed finial, foil, crocket and tracery which is the Gothic architectural decoration. In Renaissance revival style. Elizabeth, slat, caned, padded, yorkshire, bobbin turned, William & Mary are copied and transformed for the chair back. In Rococo-revival style, LouisXV, Queen Anne, Chippendale of Rococo-style- chair back and cabriole legs are copied or transformed. In the eclectic style, Classic style chair back with Renaissance-style legs or Rococo style chair back with Renaissance style legs are combined as a periodical eclectic style. In this manner now style of chair back and the periodical style of legs were used together as a new eclectic style chair.

  • All chairs are uncomfortable in the long run, but some chairs become uncomfortable more rapidly than others, and in any particular chair, some people will be more uncomfortable than others. Comfort will depend upon the interaction of chair characteristics, user characteristics, and task characteristics. In this study, we intend to design the comfortable office chair by investigating the anthropometric and biomechanical aspects for Korean. Therefore, we determine the design dimensions using the analysis of anthropometric data. With these dimensions, we design the chair mechanism of which backrest reclines with increasing chair pan declination. This mechanism allows the back to get adequate support at the correct level for any backrest declination. Also, the lumbar support in the backrest descends with increasing backrest reclining. By using this chair, a considerably better sitting posture can be obtained, and uncomfortable feeling and back pain may be prevented.

  • Objective: The aim of this study is to develop an office chair enabling to keep working at reclined sitting posture. Background: Sedentary workers are supposed to change the posture frequently during long hours of sitting. A reclined sitting position has been recommended to reduce disc pressure. But slumped sitting posture caused by the buttock sliding forward without any adjustment of back reclining is commonly observed. The worker seems to have tendency to change the sitting posture maintaining working condition. We assumed the reason to be their hands movement away from the working space when tilting backward. Method: Slide mechanism allowing seat to move forward was designed to maintain the hand position in working space during reclining. A prototype was manufactured and tilting motion was analyzed using motion capture system. Four experiment chairs were tested including the manufactured prototype chair and three other commercial chairs. Results: A backward movements of the hand position were 13.0mm, 101.7mm, 156.1mm and 139.3mm at the prototype chair, compared to chair B, chair C and chair D, respectively. And the movement was remarkably small at the prototype chair. Conclusion: The developed seat sliding chair allows back tilting maintaining hand position at working space. We expect the user tilting back more often than normal tilting chair during seated work. But further investigation is required to figure out the effectiveness of the developed chair using prolonged working hours. Application: The developed office chair directly affects commercialization.

  • Objective: This study examined the effects of working chair that was developed for farmers who work in grapevine's cluster thinning. Background: Agricultural work involves some of the nation's highest occupational risk exposures. Fruit cultivation has been recognized as one of the most hazardous crops in which to work. Grapevine cluster thinning task involve activities related to the main risk factors associated with upper limb work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Method: An experiment was designed to test the working chair. Six healthy male($25.8{\pm}4.9years$) were selected as the subjects for this study. Electromyography(EMG) was used to monitor the muscles activity, and Electro-goniometer was used to measure the ranges of motions of the elbow, trunk and knee. Subjective test was also carried out to examine discomfort body parts and their pain intensity. A grapevine's working space was built for the experiment and working chair was installed on it. In order to examine the muscle activity and range of motion, subjects used to the working chair for 30 minutes for each experimental condition. Another test without working chair was also performed for comparison. %MVC was used to quantify the level of muscle activity. Results: Decreases of muscle activity was found in all leg muscles and significant decrease of muscle activity was found in left Gastrocnemius. The range of motion of the trunk and knee also decreased when working chair used. Discomfort in lower back, thigh and shank region were reduced significantly. However, in upper limbs muscle activity tended to increase in working chair compared with conventional task. Conclusion: Improvement for cushion in seat back and pan required to reduce discomfort in buttocks. Application: Overall findings verified that the working chair might help to prevent upper limb and lower back MSDs based on the current study. These results can be practically used for work improvement for the grapevine growers to prevent MSDs.

  • Purpose: To recognize the change in the proprioception under conditions that activate the local muscles, this study found the difference in the proprioception on a fixed and swing chair. Methods: Healthy adults (7 males, 13 females) in their twenties were evaluated lumbar position sense on fixed and swing chair. And the difference of the position sense between the fixed and swing chair were analyzed. Results: The joint position senses were compared between the fixed and swing chair. As a result, there was a significant difference from all motions. Conclusion: This study found that the improvement of proprioception using swing chair means that the local muscle is activated. Therefore, to use a swing chair, which was designed in this study, is able to replace the general chair either at work or during studies. Thus, this method is easily accessible for busy modern people who are exposed to low back pain or spinal disorders due to a pattern of inactivity.

  • This study aimed to examine the postures and behaviors of high school sophomores in Gyeongnam Province in daily life and the relations between back pain and sitting postures, and to identify undesirable behaviors and postures in daily life, and the following conclusions were obtained. The relation between back pain and cupping the chin in one of the two hands in rotation or sitting with the legs crossed or sitting on a chair with the back and hip not leaning against the backrest was statistically significant (p<0.05). The results above indicated that high school sophomores in South Korea spend most of the day sitting on a chair in school and that undesirable behaviors using one side of the body, such as cupping the chin in one of the two hands in rotation or sitting with the legs crossed, cause back pain. In addition, those who sit on a chair with the back and hip leaning against the backrest experienced less back pain than those who did not, and exercises after school were found to be helpful to prevent back pain.

  • This study is focused on the chairs for students, especially, middle school students who grow rapidly compared with other group. We make a certain definite possibilities by the scientific and medical comparison of the approved chair with existing chair about the function of feet-height control & the application of the flexible back. The object of this test is middle & high school student (ratio of gender is the same) in Inchon. And the study types are two. One is to bring a matter and to suggest a design as alternative, the other is to verify propriety of the alternative. The major finding from the research are summarized as follows: 1) K·S standards for existing chairs are not proper to the growth rate of present juveniles, and they don't cope with proactive the discrepancy of growth pace. 2) Existing chairs have caused troubles by using only the fixed back of a chair. This troubles made bad influences on juveniles in a growth period. 3) Even existing chairs can adjust the back of a chair, they can be easily broken , and if they adjusted once, they can't be easily controled. Furthermore, it is Impossible to manage them because of the rust of control parts. 4) In the case of supplying the same sizes of them, juveniles who are different to growth rate respectively, can't accept the chairs. Even supplied adjustable chairs, they cant be ideal types of chairs in Open Classroom mode.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of different chair type (with backrest chair and without backrest chair) and pelvic position (anterior pelvic tilting and posterior pelvic tilting) on three abdominal muscles (upper rectus abdominis, external oblique, internal oblique) and back extensor activation during lower extremity exercise. The four different conditions during bilateral knee extension exercise were: (1) leaning on backrest chair with anterior pelvic tilting, (2) leaning on backrest chair with posterior pelvic tilting, (3) anterior pelvic tilting without backrest chair, and (4) posterior pelvic tilting without backrest chair. Fifteen healthy male subjects with no history of neuromusculoskeletal disease voluntarily participated in this study. Electromyography (EMG) was used to collect muscle activation data, and muscle activation data was expressed as a percentage of maximal voluntary isometric contraction (%MVIC). One-way repeated analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the statistical significance, and Bonferroni comparison was used as a post hoc test. The results of this study were the following: (1) Erector spinae activation was significantly lower in posterior pelvic tilting without backrest compared with that in leaning on backrest chair with anterior pelvic tilting. (2) Upper rectus abdominis activation was significantly lower than erector spinae in all four different chair type and pelvic tilting conditions.

  • Objective: This study aims to develop and scientifically investigate the efficacy of the Spine S-curve Reactive Backrest that responds to the spine curvature of the user when seated, and maintains and enhances the natural S-curve of the lower back, thereby helping to relieve fatigue, correct posture and prevent spine deformities. Background: The focus of current development, design guidelines and/or standards for office chairs is mainly placed on the chair's dimensions, incline angle, adjusting features and lumbar support. Research and development was called for developing a chair backrest that maintains and improves the S-curve of the full spine. Method: The Spine S-curve Reactive Backrest was ergonomically designed to maintain correct posture and enhance user comfort. When leaned on, the backrest responds to the user's spine line and the whole lower back sits closely against the backrest, thereby aligning the user's lower back and backrest as one to maintain and improve the natural S-curve formation of the spine. In order to evaluate the efficacy of the newly designed chair (new design) and the comparison target (chair), five male college students of standard body type with normal spine curvature were selected as test subjects, and a motion analyzer and electromyography were utilized to measure S-curve and erector spinae muscle activity when seated. Results: The spine S-curve was better maintained and improved when sitting in the new design than in the comparison chair. Particularly notable was the greater displacement gap of the thoracic spine than the cervical spine, and also that of the lumbar more than the thoracic spine, with the increase of the backrest tilting angle. Furthermore, the electromyogram results showed the new design caused a lower fatigue level of the erector spinae muscles compared to the comparison chair, and also earned a higher preference in the subjective opinion results. Conclusion: The newly designed chair in this study responds to the user's spine curvature and maintains and enhances the lower back's natural S-curve, and thereby relieves fatigue, promotes better posture, and helps to prevent spine deformities better than existing office chairs. There is a need to widely introduce and supply this new design. Application: The new design is applicable to office and student chairs, and is expected to improve concentration and work efficiency.
