This review presents the status of our research in liquid crystal display (LCD) photo-aligning. We present the basic mechanisms of the photo-induced order in various photo-aligning materials and in azo-dye layers in particular and show that photo-aligning methods can provide a controllable pretilt angle and anchoring energy of the liquid crystal cell, as well as its high thermo and UV stability. The photo-aligning of various types of liquid crystal displays is also discussed.
Laccase produced from Trametes sp. was immobilized on CNBr-activated Sepharose-4B (CAS4B) and tested for degradation of azo dyes. Laccase was efficiently immobilized on CAS4B. Immobilization of laccase on CAS4B increased pH, thermal and proteolytic stabilities. Optimum pH and temperature of immobilized laccase were pH 3 and 40$\^{C}$, respectively as same as those of free laccase. The K$\_$m/($\mu$mol/ml) values of free and immobilized laccase for Reactive Blue 19 as the substrate were 0.34 and 2.07, respectively V$\_$max/($\mu$mol/mL$.$min) values of them were 0.12 and 0.1, respectively. In repeated batch reactions, conditions retained high stability and degradation of dye for immobilized laccase were pH 5 and 30$\^{C}$. HBT didn\\`t decrease highly activity of immobilized laccase. Immobilized laccase was very stable for degrading dyes continuously in a packed-bed reactor containing laccase immobilized on CAS4B. For continuous degradation of 100 $\mu$M Reactive Blue 19 and 50 $\mu$M Acid Red 57 in the presence of 0.1 mM HBT under optimum conditions, immobilized laccase retained 70% of degradation ability even after 30 hours.
Three thermally stable red dyes of azo, quinacridone and perylene derivatives were synthesized and dye-based color filters were manufactured for liquid crystal display. Aggregation behavior of the dyes and their spectral property in film state were investigated by concentration dependent spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). These dyes have remarkable difference on their aggregation behavior in film state. Such difference of aggregation behavior affects the spectral property of the film, and it can cause decreasing the transmittance of dye-based color filters.
The present research was undertaken to investigate the activity of ligninolytic enzymes and the decolorization capability of some dyes with Irpex zonatus BN2, isolated from nature and identified. For the assay of enzyme activities, the isolate did not produce lignin peroxidase (LiP) and veratryl alcohol oxidase (VAO), but laccase and manganese dependent peroxidase (MnP). While the activity for MnP was low $(61.6\;nmol/mg{\cdot}protein)$, its laccase activity was very high $(1185.9\;nmol/mg{\cdot}protein)$. Moreover, laccase had appeared earlier than MnP. When the isolate was incubated with each dye for 10 days, the decolorization rates of azo dyes, such as orange II, orange G, tropaeolin O and congo red were 98.0%, 97.4%, 99.0% and 95.3%, respectively. In case of heterocyclic dyes, eosin Y, toludine blue, methyl blue and azur B were 97.4 %, 98.7%, 99.9% and 94.0% respectively. Finally the results of triphenylmethane dye such as basic fuchsin, malachite green and crystal violet were 98.5%, 95.7% and 99.4%, respectively. The results suggest that laccase of Irpex zonatus BN2 should be played an important role in the decolorization of the dyes.
Several white-rot fungi collected from the mountains of Korea were evaluated for their ability to decolorize azo, polymeric, and reactive dyes. Strains CJ-105, CJ-212 and CJ-315, identified as Trametes sp., Pleurotus sp. and Fomes sp., respectively, showed higher potential for decolorization of those dyes in either solid or liquid media. For Trametes sp. CJ-105, 100ppm of Remazol Brilliant blue R and 500ppm of Acid Red 264 were completely decolorized after 2 days under liquid culture. The dominating ligninolytic enzyme existing in the culture broth was laccase (E.C. 1.10.3.2). Also, Pleurotus sp. CJ-212 and Fomes sp. CJ-315 showed similar patterns in decolorization of Remazol Brilliant Blue R and Acid Red 264. The extent of decolorization of the dyes in liquid culture was found to be proportional to the activities of the ligninolytic of decolorization of the dyes in liquid culture was found to be proportional to the activities of the ligninolytic enzymes produced by each strain. In addition to that Trametes sp. CJ-105 was highly effective in degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and pentachlorophenol by the activity of the ligninolytic enzymes produced. In this study, we found that white-rot fungi, Trametes sp. CJ-105(KFCC 10941), Pleurotus sp. CJ-212(KFCC 10943) and Fomes sp. CJ-315(KFCC 10942), were effective in decolorizing a wide range of structurally different synthetic dyes, as well as some chemical compounds which are known to be hardly degradable.

Disperse dyes derived from heterocyclic compounds such as phenylindole, pyridone, diaminopyridine, and carbazole have been known to exhibit high light fastness and bathochromic shift compared to the coursponding aminoazobenzene. The synthetic method to obtain diaminopyridine derivatives, which can be used as coupling components, was chlorination of pyridone with phosphorous oxychloride, followed by substitution with various primary amines. Four azo disperse dyes were synthesized by coupling four diaminopyridines with 2-cyano-4-nitroaniline as a diazo component. Structures of these dyes were confirmed by $^1H$ NMR spectroscopy. The wavelengths of maximum absorption of the synthesized disperse dyes were in the range of $517\~528nm$, and molar extinction coefficients were $45,700\~50,100$. The dyeability of four disperse dyes toward PET fiber was generally good. Wash and rubbing fastnesses were excellent, while light and dry heat fastness were good.
The coupling of aromatic diazonium salts with humic or nitrohumic acid, as a supplemental method of determining the structure and utilization of humic acid, were studied. The following results were obtained. 1) Humic acids have many vacan to-and p-positions in their phenol kernels. 2) Humic acids have not so many benzene kernels in their structure units. 3) When coupled with aromatic diazonium salts (such as aniline, aminonaphthalene and aminoanthraquinone derivatives), various azo-dye were obtained.
The concept for the decolorization in biological dye wastewater treatment systems is based on anaerobic treatment, for the reductive cleavage of the dyes' azo linkages, in combination with aerobic treatment, for the degradation of the products from azo dye cleavage, aromatic amines. Batch tests were conducted to examine the conditions and the factors affecting biological treatment of dye wastewater. From the tests, the removal efficiencies of organics and colors of dyeing wastewater were improved to $COD_{Cr}$ 27% and color 9% by injecting 10% of the domestic wastewater as a cosubstrate, and $COD_{Cr}$ 30%, color 22% with 30% injection of domestic wastewater. Therefore it was proved that decolorization efficiency is demonstrated with domestic wastewater as a cosubstrate. The analysis of aromatic amines in wastewater showed that decolorization was achieved by cometabolism while aromatic amines were produced by cleavage of azo bonds under anaerobic conditions and these products were removed in an aerobic tank subsequently.
