  • Tartrazine (TAZ) is one of the most commonly used artificial dyes for foods and drugs. We determined the effect of TAZ on fetal development by examining morphological, visceral, and skeletal malformations in rat fetuses following daily oral administration of TAZ to pregnant Wistar rats at the 6th-15th day of gestation. TAZ at 0.45 and 4.5 mg/kg induced 6.0 and 7.1% fetal resorptions, as well as 10.0 and 10.5% fetal mortality, respectively. Fetal body weight and length were significantly lower in the groups treated with TAZ at 0.45 ($3.97{\pm}0.21g$ and $27.3{\pm}0.54mm$, respectively) and 4.5 mg/kg ($3.48{\pm}0.15g$ and $23.22{\pm}1.02mm$, respectively) than in the control group ($4.0{\pm}0.15g$ and $30.01{\pm}0.42mm$, respectively). TAZ at 0.45 and 4.5 mg/kg induced hepatic damage (20 and 33.3%, respectively), dark brown pigmentation due to hemosiderin in the splenic parenchyma (16.7 and 21.7%, respectively), as well as destructed and necrotic renal tubules (16.7 and 26.7%, respectively) in the fetuses. Moreover, TAZ at 0.45 and 4.5 mg/kg caused one or more missing coccygeal vertebrae (20 and 40%, respectively), missing sternebrae (6 and 10%, respectively), missing hind limbs (24 and 4%, respectively), and irregular ribs (16 and 20, respectively) in the fetuses. We concluded that TAZ has embryotoxic and teratogenic potentials in rats.

  • This paper studies various roughness parameters, besides waviness, texture, and nonlinear parameters of Bismarck brown Y (BBY)-doped Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films based on the computed values of optical limiting (OL) threshold power and nonlinear refractive index. The films' morphology, grain size, and absorption spectra were investigated using atomic force microscopy in conjunction with ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer. The particle size of the films ranged between 4.11-4.51 mm and polymer films showed good homogeneity and medium roughness, ranging from 1.11-4.58 mm. A polymer film's third-order nonlinear optical features were carried out using the Z-scan methodology. The measurements were obtained by a continuous wave produced from a solid-state laser with a 532 nm wavelength. According to the results, BBY has a nonlinear refractive index of 10-6 cm2/W that is significantly negative and nonlinear. The optical limiting thresholds are roughly 10.29, 13.52, and 18.71 mW, respectively. The shift of nonlinear optical features with the film's concentration was found throughout the experiment Additionally, we found that the polymer samples have outstanding capabilities for restricting the amount of optical power that may be transmitted through them. We propose that these films have the potential to be used in a wide variety of optoelectronic applications, including optical photodetectors and optical switching.

  • The catalytic wet oxidations of the wastewater containing azo dye Reactive Black 5(RB5) with heterogeneous catalyst of CuO have been carried out to investigate the effects of temperature($190{\sim}230^{\circ}C$) and catalyst concentration(0.00~0.20 g/l) on the removals of colour and total organic carbon TOC. The wastewater colour was measured with spectrophotometer, and the oxidation rate was estimated with TOC. About 90% of colour was removed during 120 min in thermal degradation of the RB5 wastewater at $230^{\circ}C$, while TOC was not removed at all. As increasing reaction temperature and catalyst concentration, the removal rates of colour and TOC increased in the catalytic wet oxidations of RB5 wastewater. The effects of catalyst were already considerable even at 0.01 g CuO/l, while the removal rates of colour and TOC increased negligibly with increasing the catalyst concentration above 0.05 g CuO/l. The initial destruction rates of the wastewater colour have shown the first-order kinetics with respect to the wastewater colour. TOC changes during catalytic wet oxidations have been well described with the global model, in which the easily degradable TOC was distinguished from non-degradable TOC of the wastewater. The impacts of reaction temperature on the destruction rate of the wastewater colour and TOC could be described with Arrhenius relationship. Activation energies of the colour removal reaction in thermal degradation, wet oxidation, and catalytic wet oxidation(0.20 g CuO/l) of the RB5 wastewater were 108.4, 78.3 and 74.1 kJ/mol, respectively. The selectivity of wastewater TOC into the non-degradable intermediates relative to the end products in the catalytic wet oxidations of RB5 wastewater was higher compared to that in phenol wet oxidations.

  • Among various metal oxides semiconductors, $TiO_2$ is the most studied semiconductor for environmental clean-up applications due to its unique ability in photocatalyzing various organic contaminants, its chemical inertness, and nontoxicity. $TiO_2$, however, has a few drawbacks to be solved such as reactivity mainly working under ultraviolet irradiation (${\lambda}$ < 387 nm) and electron - hole recombination on $TiO_2$. In this study, to extend the absorption range of $TiO_2$ into the visible range and enhance electron - hole separation, we synthesized platinum (Pt) deposited $C-TiO_2$. The presence of Pt as an electron sink has been known to snhance the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and induce the thermal decomposition. The characterization of as-synthesized $Pt-C-TiO_2$ was performed by Transmission Electron Microscopic (TEM), the Brunuer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, X-ray Diffractometer (XRD), UV-vis spectrometer (UV-DRS), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). In order to estimate the photocatalytic activity of the synthesized materials, the photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). In order to estimate the photocatalytic activity of the synthesized materials, the photodegradation experiment of an azo dye (Acid Red 44; $C_{10}H_7N=NC_{10}H_3(SO_3Na)_2OH$)was carried out by using an Xe arc lamp (300 W, Oriel). A 420 nm cut-off filter was used for visible light irradiation. From the results, Pt-deposited $C-TiO_2$ showed a far superior phothdegradation activity to Degussa P25, the commercial product under the irradiation of visible light and enhanced photocatalytic activity of visible-working $C-TiO_2$. This is a useful result into the application for the purification system of dye wastewater using visible energy of sun light.

  • The spectrophotometric determination of trace selenium(Ⅳ) using its catalytic reaction has been studied in aqueous solutions. The catalytic reaction of phenylhydrazine hydrochloride with selenium(Ⅳ) in an acidic aqueous medium produces benzenediazonium ion which will be converted into a red-coloured azo dye by coupling with H-acid(8-amino-1-naphtol-3,6-disulfonic acid disodium salt). For the reaction, the experimental conditions such as amounts of the reagents and pH of the sample solutions were optimized. After 15 ml of the sample solution was treated with 1 ml of 0.1 M EDTA solution to mask $Fe^{3+}$, etc., 1 ml of 0.06 M phenylhydrazine hydrochloride, 1 ml of 0.02 M H-acid, and 3 ml of 0.3 M-$KClO_3$ were added into the solution, sequentially. The solution was adjusted to pH 1.4 with HCl. After it was heated in a steam bath for 30 minutes, the solution was cooled down to a room temperature and then diluted to 25 ml with deionized distilled water. A blank solution for the absorbance measurement was prepared from the deionized water. The absorbance was measured at 527 nm. Using the above procedure, the trace amount of selenium was determined in natural waters such as tap, river and pond waters by a standard curve method and recoveries of Se spiked to samples were also obtained. From the recoveries of 104 to 111%, it could be concluded that this method was applicable to the quantitative determination of ng/ml level of selenium in natural waters.
