Modeling and Position-Sensorless Control of a Dual-Airgap Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Machine for Flywheel Energy Storage Systems

  • This paper presents the modeling and position-sensorless vector control of a dual-airgap axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machine optimized for use in flywheel energy storage system (FESS) applications. The proposed AFPM machine has two sets of three-phase stator windings but requires only a single power converter to control both the electromagnetic torque and the axial levitation force. The proper controllability of the latter is crucial as it can be utilized to minimize the vertical bearing stress to improve the efficiency of the FESS. The method for controlling both the speed and axial displacement of the machine is discussed. An inherent speed sensorless observer is also proposed for speed estimation. The proposed observer eliminates the rotary encoder, which in turn reduces the overall weight and cost of the system while improving its reliability. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme has been verified by simulations and experiments on a prototype machine.

  • In this study, we design, model, and analyze a compound generator that combines the axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM,) and radial flux permanent magnet (RFPM), which is expected to increase power generation by allowing the magnets to be placed on the upper, lower, left, and right sides of the same-sized generator. Through the design, modelling, and analysis of AFPM and RFPM compound generators, the generator load evaluation results rated output of 500.25 W and efficiency of 87.60%, respectively, at a rated speed of 600 rpm. By employing this complex generation system,these findings are expected to contribute to the activation of a small power generation system.

  • This paper presents the analysis, design and performance of an axial-flux permanent magnet(AFPM) motor with a core-less stator. Axial-flux permanent magnet motors prove to be the best candidate for application in electric vehicles(EVs) as direct drive wheel motors, as in comparison with conventional motors. They allow designs with higher compactness lightness and efficiency. The paper discusses design and construction of a prototype motor, and reports experimental results achieved from laboratory tests.

  • This paper deals with the design of a disk-type motor excited by permanent magnets. The main flux is oriented in the axial direction, yielding a pan cake type arrangement. the outer diameter is about 65mm, inner diameter is about 30mm, the axial length about 15mm. For reduce axial length and high efficiency, motor winding have been etched copper plate. After the introduction, the motor design is explained and characteristic of axial flux permanent magnet motor have been investigated. A prototype AFPM motor have been assembled and driving power supply are made. A characteristic of magnetical and electrical and characteristic are investigated.

  • 본 연구에서 전자기 유도 발전(EMG)은 고정자와 영구자석 회전자로 이루어진 구조로 인체의 팔 운동 에너지를 이용하여 전력 생산이 가능한 방식이다. 그 중 AFPM 기법은 인체의 느린 속도의 팔 운동 에너지에도 민감하게 동작할 수 있는 방법으로 구조가 간단하며 크기는 초소형 설계, 제작이 가능하다. 크기 ø46×11mm, 회전수 7Hz(420rpm)의 조건에서 출력전압 0.4VAC, 출력전류 4.5mA, 출력전력 30mW 로 측정되어 목표사양과 유사하게 해석되었다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 AFPM 기법을 적용한 진자 발전을 연구하여 인체 운동 에너지로 스마트 기기에 전력을 충전하는 데 연구 목적이 있다.

Back EMF Design of an AFPM Motor using PCB Winding by Quasi 3D Space Harmonic Analysis Method

  • This paper presents a method to design the waveform of a back electromotive force (back EMF) of an axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) motor using printed circuit board (PCB) windings. When the magnetization distribution of permanent magnet (PM) is given, the magnetic field in the air gap region is calculated by the quasi three dimensional (3D) space harmonic analysis (SHA) method. Once the flux density distribution in the winding region is determined, the required shape of the back EMF can be obtained by adjusting the winding distribution. This can be done by modifying the distance between patterns of PCB to control the harmonics in the winding distribution. The proposed method is verified by finite element analysis (FEA) results and it shows the usefulness of the method in eliminating a specific harmonic component in the back EMF waveform of a motor.

  • In this paper, control & design of AFPM Motor for Electric Vehicle is presented. Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Motors without Core are designed by numerical approach which is based on mechanical concept. This procedure consists of two parts: one is rotor magnet, the other is stator coil. And to evaluate the performance of target motor, various points like as BEMF and output characteristics are considered in this paper. Also simulation results & Experiments are provided to prove the novel motor design.

  • This paper deals with the design and the characteristic analysis of a coreless axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) motor. Because a direct-drive wheel motor is easily derived from it, the AFPM motor is very suitable for application in an electric scooter. Compared to a conventional motor of the same size and weight, the AFPM motor is proven to have more power and torque per unit weight. In this paper, an AFPM coreless motor with a double-sided rotor disk equipped with Nd-Fe-B rare earth magnets is designed and a prototype of the motor is manufactured, which will be properly applied for the low-speed, and high-torque direct drive required for the electric scooter. The manufactured prototype of the motor has a rating of 300W, 510rpm, 5.6Nm, and 85% efficiency.

  • Permanent-magnet generators have been used for wind turbines for many years. This paper deals with the AFPM(Axial - Flux Permanent Magnet) Generator with a high power-to-weight ratio, dedicated for small wind turbines. The designed and constructed generator as a prototype in this study is a slotless type AFPM Generator with Neodymium-Iron-Boron magnet rotor. Based on that construction, a magnetic circuit analysis of the generator is carried out. Some important equations covering its characteristics and construction are derived and its magnetic and electrical characteristics are investigated.

  • Cogging torque, the primary ripple component in the torque generated by permanent magnet (PM) motors, is due to the slotting on the stator or rotor. This article shows the reduction of cogging torque in a novel axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) motor through the various design schemes. 3D finite element method is used for the exact magnetic field analysis. The effects of slot shapes and skewing of slot on the cogging torque and the average torque have been investigated in detail.
