The speed ratio-torque load-axial force characteristics of a rubber V-belt (RVB) and a metal V-belt (MVB) CVT are investigated and their performances are compared. It is found that power is transmitted by tension difference in RVB, and by thrust difference in MVB. The nondimensional equations for speed ratio-torque load-axial force of RVB are exactly same as those of MVB. However, actual characteristics of axial forces of RVB and MVB are different depending on their power transmission methods. The torque capacity of MVB is 5-6 times higher than that of RVB due to MVB's higher strength, even if the required axial force of MVB CVT control is 3-4 times higher than that of RVB.
A characteristic of the rotating machine that has been receiving relatively little attention is the axial force on the rotor versus its axial displacement from magnetic neutral position. A knowledge of this force is essential to the economic application of thrust bearings for rotating machine and their connected loads. In this paper this axial force is analyzed and calculated and test values are verified with two different machines.
This research numerically analyzes the dynamic characteristics of a coupled journal and thrust hydrodynamic bearing due to its groove location which has the static load due to the weight of a rotor in the axial direction and the dynamic load due to its mass unbalance in the radial direction. The Reynolds equation is transformed to solve a plain member rotating type of journal bearing(PMRJ), a grooved member rotating type of journal bearing (GMRJ), a plain member rotating type of thrust bearing (PMRT) and a grooved member rotating type of thrust bearing (GMRT). FEM is used to solve the Reynolds equations in order to calculate the pressure distribution in a fluid film. Reaction forces and friction torque are obtained by integrating the pressure and shear stress along the fluid film, respectively. Dynamic behaviors, such as whirl radius or floating height of a rotor, are determined by solving its nonlinear equations of motion with the Runge-Kutta method. This research shows that the groove location affects the pressure distribution in the fluid film and consequently the dynamic performance of a HDD spindle system.
The thruster is the crucial factor of an underwater vehicle system, because it is the lowest layer in the control loop of the system. In this paper, we propose an accurate and practical thrust modeling for underwater vehicles which considers the effects of ambient flow velocity and angle. In this model, the axial flow velocity of the thruster, which is non-measurable, is represented by ambient flow velocity and propeller shaft velocity. Hence, contrary to previous models, the proposed model is practical since it uses only measurable states. Next, the whole thrust map is divided into three states according to the state of ambient flow and propeller shaft velocity, and one of the borders of the states is defined as Critical Advance Ratio (CAR). This classification explains the physical phenomenon of conventional experimental thrust maps. In addition, the effect of the incoming angle of ambient flow is analyzed, and Critical Incoming Angle (CIA) is also defined to describe the thrust force states. The proposed model is evaluated by comparing experimental data with numerical model simulation data, and it accurately covers overall flow conditions within 2N force error. The comparison results show that the new model's matching performance is significantly better than conventional models'.
This paper proposes a systematic design method for axial(or thrust) magnetic bearings using optimal design methodology. The objective of the optimal design is to minimize bearing volume. The constraints include the bearing load capacity, linearized bearing stiffness and damping, the magnetic flux density, and geometric relations. In order to obtain design values which can be applied to fabrication of bearings, branch and bound method was introduced in the postprocessing procedure of optimal design results. Verification of the proposed design methodology was perfomed by an example.
The apparently different physical problems of lateral vibration and elastic stability of a linear member are limiting cases of a single phenomenon, the more general expression being the mode of vibration with end thrust. For a single-span beam-column, it is generally known that the square of the frequency of lateral vibration is approximately linearly related to compressive axial force. In this paper the relationship between the frequency and axial force of multi-span compression members is investigated by means of the finite element method.
This paper deals with analytical prediction for electromagnetic characteristics of a tubular linear actuator with Halbach array using transfer relations, namely, Melcher's methodology. Using transfer relations derived in terms of magnetic vector potential and a two-dimensional (2-d) cylindrical coordinate system, this paper derives analytical solutions for magnetic vector potential due to permanent magnets (PMs) and stator winding currents. On the basis of these analytical solutions, this paper also achieves analytical solutions for the magnetic fields distribution produced by PMs, stator windings current and axial thrust. The analytical results are validated extensively by finite element (FE) analyses. In particular, test results such as thrust measurements are given to confirm the analysis. Finally, this paper estimates control parameters using analytical solutions and test results such as thrust, back-emf, inductance and resistance measurements.
To overcome the limited relative uncertainty and work range of the existing planar stage and the bulk structure of the contact-less motor for rotation, the novel operating principle to realize the precise rotation is suggested. It uses the two-axial vector forces, normal force and thrust force, of three-induction type of axial motors located $120^{\circ}$ apart, resulting in the contact-free rotation of the mover. Firstly in this paper, the magnetic forces across the air gap are modeled and simulated under the various conditions. It clarifies the feasible range of the derived solution. And the algorithm compensating the strong cross couple between the forces and the control inputs; generally AC magnitude and slip frequency, is given to realize the independent control of six axes. Finally, for the successfully implemented system, the round test and the micro step test results are given.

This paper establishes an iterative calculation model for the hydrodynamic performance of propeller in oblique flow based on low order potential based surface panel method. The hydrodynamic performance of propeller is calculated through panel method which is also used to calculate the induced velocity. The slipstream of propeller is adjusted according to the inflow velocity and the induced velocity. The oblique flow is defined by the axial inflow velocity and the incident angle. The calculation results of an instance show that the thrust and torque of propeller decrease with the increase of axial inflow velocity but increase with the incident angle. The unsteadiness of loads on the propeller blade surface gets more intensified with the increases of axial inflow velocity and incident angle. However, comparing with the effect of axial inflow velocity on the unsteadiness of the hydrodynamic performance of propeller, the effect of the incident angle is more remarkable.
