Sandwich composite wall consists of concrete core attached by two external steel faceplates. It combines the advantage of steel and concrete. The appropriate composite action between steel faceplate and concrete core is achieved by using adequate mechanical connectors. This research studied the compressive behavior of the sandwich composite walls using steel trusses to bond the steel faceplates to concrete infill. Four short specimens with different wall width and thickness of steel faceplate were designed and tested under axial compression. The test results were comprehensively evaluated in terms of failure modes, load versus axial and lateral deformation responses, resistance, stiffness, ductility, strength index, and strain distribution. The test results showed that all specimens exhibited high resistance and good ductility. Truss connectors offer better restraint to walls with thinner faceplates and smaller wall width. In addition, increasing faceplate thickness is more effective in improving the ultimate resistance and axial stiffness of the wall.
The use of cold-formed steel members is increasing day by day, especially in regions where earthquake effects are intensively experienced. Among cold-formed steel members (CFS), "channel" members are used more than other crosssectional members, especially in buildings or industrial structures. In recent years, several studies have been carried out on the axial load and flexural performance of these members under monotonic loading. In this study, CFS beam-column members were cyclically and monotonically loaded under combined axial load and biaxial bending moments, and their buckling behavior, load bearing capacity, stiffness, ductility, and energy absorption capacity were determined. For this purpose, monotonic and cyclic loading experiments were carried out on 30 CFS channel members at 15 different eccentricities. Then, material properties were determined by axial monotonic tensile and very low cycle fatigue tests for use in numerical studies. From the experimental results, the buckling modes, bearing capacities, ductility, stiffness, and energy absorption capacities of the members were obtained. The characteristics of the members were compared according to the stress state of the lips. According to the data obtained from the displacement transducer placed on the lips and on the back of the web, information about the buckling mode and curvature of the members was obtained. Finally, monotonic, and cyclic loading results were compared to determine the differences in the buckling behavior of the members.

Axial and lateral behavior of helical piles is generally influenced by number, diameter, helix pitch, and locations of helices. In this study, axial and horizontal behavior of helical piles with three helices was investigated varying helices' locations, diameter, and pitch. Especially, due to the spiral shapes of helices, the effect of lateral load directions at pile heads on their lateral behavior was investigated. Axial load test of small-scale helical pile was conducted in laboratory, and its results were compared with numerical analysis results of the same model for cross check of validity of both results. Furthermore, diverse numerical analyses were performed for different shapes of helical piles. Consequently, it was found that, for the given analysis conditions, the helix diameter was the most influential factor on the horizontal and vertical behavior of helical piles.
The purpose of this paper is to propose a simple analysis method of axial deformation of base-isolation rubber bearings in a building subjected to earthquake loading and present its applicability to the analysis of the bound of the aspect ratio of base-isolated buildings. The base shear coefficient is introduced as a key parameter for the bound analysis. The bound of the aspect ratio of base-isolated buildings is analyzed based on the relationship of the following four quantities; (i) ultimate state of the tensile stress of rubber bearings based on a proposed simple recursive analysis for seismic loading, (ii) ultimate state of drift of the base-isolation story for seismic loading, (iii) ultimate state of the axial compressive stress of rubber bearings under dead loads, (iv) prediction of the overturning moment at the base for seismic loading. In particular, a new recursive analysis method of axial deformation of rubber bearings is presented taking into account the nonlinear tensile behavior of rubber bearings and it is shown that the relaxation of the constraint on the ultimate state of the tensile stress of rubber bearings increases the limiting aspect ratio.

The nonlinearity of a cable-stayed bridge results in the large displacement of main girder due to a long span, the large axial forces reduce the catenary action of cables and the flexural stiffness. Therefore, the static and dynamic behavior of pylon for a cable-stayed bridge plays an important role in determining its safety. This study was performed to find the behavior of pylon of cable-stayed bridge for the first-order analysis considering of axial load only and for the second-order analysis considering of lateral deflection due to axial load. The axial force and moment values of pylon were different from the results of the first-order analysis and second-order analysis according to pylon shape and cross beam stiffness when the pylon was subjected to earthquake and wind loads. In the second-order analysis, comparing the numerical values of the member forces for the dynamic analysis, types 3 and 4 (A type) were relatively more advantageons types than types 1 and 2 (H type). Considering the stability for pylon of cable-stayed bridge (whole structural system), types 3 and 4 (A type) with pre-buckling of girder were proper types than types 1 and 2 (H type) with buckling of pylon.
The objective of this study is to experimentally scrutinize the axial performance of built-up concrete filled steel tube (CFT) columns composed of steel plates. In this case, the main parameters cross section types, compressive strength of filled concrete, and the effect of welding lines. Welded built-up steel box columns are fabricated by connecting two pieces of cold-formed U-shaped or four pieces of L-shaped thin steel plates with continuous penetration groove welding line located at mid-depth of stub column section. Furthermore, traditional square steel box sections with no welding lines are investigated for the comparison of axial behavior between the generic and build-up cross sections. Accordingly, 20 stub columns with thickness and height of 2 and 300 mm have been manufactured. As a result, welding lines in built-up specimens act as stiffeners because have higher strength and thickness in comparison to the plates. Subsequently, by increasing the welding lines, the load bearing capacity of stub columns has been increased in comparison to the traditional series. Furthermore, for specimens with the same confinement steel tubes and concrete core, increment of B/t ratio has reduced the ductility and axial strength.
Earthquake resistant R/C frame structures are generally designed to prevent the columns from plastic hinging. R/C columns under higher axial load or strong earthquake showed a brittle behavior due to the deterioration of strength and stiffness degradation. An experimental study was conducted to examine the behavior and to find the relationship between amounts of lateral reinforcements and compressive strength of ten R/C column specimens subjected to reversed cyclic lateral load and higher axial load. Test results are follows : An increase in the amount of lateral reinforcement results in a significant improvement in both ductility and energy dissipation capacities of columns. R/C columns with sub-tie provide the improved ductility capacity than those with closely spaced lateral reinforcement only. While the load resisting capacity of the high strength R/C columns is higher than the normal strength concrete columns under both an identical ratio of lateral reinforcement, however the ductility capacity of high strength R/C columns is decreased considerably. Therefore, the amounts of lateral reinforcement must be designed carefully to secure the sufficient ductility and economic design of HSC columns under higher axial load.
An analytical method considering axial equilibrium is proposed for the short- and long-term analyses of shear lag effect in reinforced concrete (RC) box girders. The axial equilibrium of box girders is taken into account by using an additional generalized displacement, referred to as the longitudinal displacement of the web. Three independent shear lag functions are introduced to describe different shear lag intensities of the top, bottom, and cantilever plates. The time-dependent material properties of the concrete are simulated by the age-adjusted effective modulus method (AEMM), while the reinforcement is assumed to behave in a linear-elastic fashion. The differential equations are derived based on the longitudinal displacement of the web, the vertical displacement of the cross section, and the shear lag functions of the flanges. The time-dependent expressions of the generalized displacements are then deduced for box girders subjected to uniformly distributed loads. The accuracy of the proposed method is validated against the finite element results regarding the short- and long-term responses of a simply-supported RC box girder. Furthermore, creep analyses considering and neglecting shrinkage are performed to quantify the time effects on the long-term behavior of a continuous RC box girder. The results show that the proposed method can well evaluate both the short- and long-term behavior of box girders, and that concrete shrinkage has a considerable impact on the concrete stresses and internal forces, while concrete creep can remarkably affect the long-term deflections.

Loads on offshore structures are largely transferred to the bracing members in the form of axial forces. The detrimental effects of imperfections on compressive strength are well recognized. Damage in the members of offshore structures would significantly affect the compressive behavior of the members. As a result, such damages may also affect the ability of the structure to withstand the functional and environmental loads. It is important to be able to assess the residual strength of damaged members quickly and accurately. This will help operators to make the decision whether the member has to be repaired or not. In this study, a series of calculation is performed to study the effects of different parameters on the behavior of such damaged members under axial load. And the results of analysis are compared with those of experiment.

The study on the lateral earth pressure is briskly preformed for various conditions such as type of retaining walls, ground condition, and type of supporting systems. It is not simple to determine the distribution of lateral earth pressure accurately, however, because the lateral earth pressure is affected by various factors. This study is performed to analyze the behavior of earth retaining walls for new excavation contacting with existing excavation by comparing with the site measuring values before and after new excavation. On the base of observation, the distribution of strut axial forces is similar to that of ganeral earth retaining walls, but strut axial forces is increased by removal of existing earth anchors. When new excavation is performed contacting with existing excavation, the axial force of strut is decreased because of soil exclusion in the behind walls, but that force is increased after new exeavation. The analysis result show that the installation of strut in middle part makes a effect to not only 1 adjacent strut, but 3-5 adjacent struts. Also during new excavation strut axial forces is decreased by relaxation of total earth retaining wall system.
