  • The Ag/WC electrical contacts were prepared via powder metallurgy using 60 wt% Ag, 40 wt% WC, and small amounts of Co3O4 with varying WC particle sizes. After the fabrication of the contact materials, microstructure observations confirmed that WC-1 had an average grain size (AGS) of 0.27 ㎛, and WC-2 had an AGS of 0.35 ㎛. The Ag matrix in WC-1 formed fine grains, whereas a significantly larger and continuous growth of the Ag matrix was observed in WC-2. This indicates the different flow behaviors of liquid Ag during the sintering process owing to the different WC sizes. The electrical conductivities of WC-1 and WC-2 were 47.8% and 60.4%, respectively, and had a significant influence on the Ag matrix. In particular, WC-2 exhibited extremely high electrical conductivity owing to its large and continuous Ag-grain matrix. The yield strengths of WC-1 and WC-2 after compression tests were 349.9 MPa and 280.7 MPa, respectively. The high yield strength of WC-1 can be attributed to the Hall-Petch effect, whereas the low yield strength of WC-2 can be explained by the high fraction of high-angle boundaries (HAB) between the WC grains. Furthermore, the relationships between the microstructure, electrical/mechanical properties, and deformation mechanisms were evaluated.

  • The addition of titanium has come to produce an increase in the conductivity of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ and has been shown NTC ( negative temperature coefficient ) characteristics. Titanium enters the ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ lattice substitutionally as $Ti^{4+}$,thus producing an $Fe^{2+}$ and maintaining the average charge per cation at three. Thus the $Fe^{2+}$ acts as a donor center with respect to the surrounding $Fe^{3+}$ ions. The sintering temperature, compacting pressure and sintering tire have an effect on the electrical properties. C-V and other properties have been measured on polycrystalline samples of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ containing small deviations from stoichiometry and small amounts of added Titanium. This measurment was made in the course of an investigation of the NTC mechanism in oxides whose cations have a partially filled d-level. C-V and frequency properties have been applied to the measurement of the trap barrier properties at the grain boundary. The double Schottky barrier at the grain boundary is the major cause of the NTC mechanism in NTC thermistor of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ containing N-type impurity.

  • The present investigation was undertaken to study the milkability characteristics of Holstein cows. Out of 6,660 initial records 4,607 records were finally included in the analysis after deleting some records with an abnormal range of values for the traits considered. These 4,607 Holstein cows belonged to a total of 122 herds located in a province in Korea. The 'LactoCorder' instrument was used to electronically record the milkability traits at the milking parlor. A total of 19 traits were studied which were broadly classified into milk yield, milking speed, milking time and the electrical conductivity related traits. The SAS 9.1 statistical software was used to carry out analyses. The average maximum milk flow per minute was 3.21 kg/min, while the average milking speed during the main milking process (DMHG) had a mean value of 2.30 kg/min. The total milk yield was 14.14 kg, 62% of which was milked during the first three minutes of the milking. The average total milking time was 8.23 min. Among the three phases of the main milking process, the time of stable milk flow had the longest time (2.97 min) followed by the time at the decline phase (2.62 min). The average time taken to reach the plateau phase was 1.08 min, which can still be reduced further through improved managemental practices. Among milk yield traits, milk yield during the first two (MG2) and three (MG3) minutes of milking had high positive correlation with milking speed traits and negative correlations with almost all the milking time traits except time of incline in milk flow from 0.5 kg/min till the attainment of the plateau phase (tAN). Milking speed traits had negative correlations with total milking time, time at main milking process, time at plateau and with the time at decline. Since there was medium to high negative correlation between the milking speed and the time at plateau, there is a need for selection of cows which have intermediate milking speed so that it could require less milking time and also the optimum (higher and longer) plateau time. Proper pre-stimulation and avoiding over milking will help in further reducing the milking time and thus will add to the net profit of the farmer.

  • In recent years, new materials and technology has been developed using single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) as an alternative to indium tin oxide (ITO) to fulfil the requirements towards novel technological drive. These technologies offer products having a broad range of conductivity, excellent transparency, neutral color tone, good adhesion, abrasion resistance as well as mechanical robustness. In addition, SWCNTs can be solution processed to replace the sophisticated vacuum techniques at high temperatures. In the present work, transparent conducting films were fabricated from the purified SWCNTs. Dispersion of purified SWCNTs was accomplished in 1,2-dichlorobenzene without using surfactants or polymers following ultrasonic process. We achieved coating of nanotubes film on poly ether suiphone (PES) for an average sheet resistance ~110 ${\Omega}/{\Box}$ of optical transmittance 80% at 550 nm. Conventional spin coating method was followed to fabricate films from the purified and dispersed nanotubes solution. The results will be presented.

  • This study was carried out to analyze the microstructure characteristics of electrolyte membrane through XRD, SEM and AC impedance measurement for using in high temperature steam electrolysis(HTE). It was investigated that thermal stability and electric characteristics by sintering condition using dry and wet process, and confirmed growth of particle and density change by sintering temperature. The sintering temperature and behavior had an effect on the relative density of the ceramic and the average grain size. The more amount of dispersant in organic compound increase, the more the density increased. But the binder was shown opposite phenomenon. It was analyzed that electrolyte resistance and electrical characteristics using AC impedance. The electrical properties of YSZ grain boundary changed with the sintering temperature.

  • The performance dependence of the P3HT:PCBM based bulk hetero-junction (BHJ) organic solar cells (OSCs) on the electrical and the optical properties of amorphous InZnSnO (a-IZTO) electrodes as a difference in film thicknesses are examined. With an increasing of the a-IZTO thickness, the series resistance ($R_{series}$) of the OSCs is reduced because of the reduction of sheet resistance ($R_{sheet}$) of a-IZTO electrodes. Additionally, It was found that the photocurrent density ($J_{sc}$) and the fill factor (FF) in OSCs are mainly affected by the electrical conductivity of the a-IZTO anode films rather than the optical transparency at thinner a-IZTO films. On the other hand, despite the much lower $R_{series}$ comes from thicker anode films, the dominant factor affecting the $J_{sc}$ became average optical transmittance of a-IZTO electrodes as well as power conversion efficiency (PCE) in same device configuration due to the thick anode films had as sufficiently low $R_{sheet}$ to extract the hole carrier from the active material.

  • This study was conducted to investigate influences of solifluction and sediment runoff on the stream water qualities during the spring season. The study sites were four points in the northeastern area of the Bukhansan National Park. And, field surveys were carried out in the spring of 1999, 2000 and 2001. The results of this study were summarized as follows; During the investigation period, the amounts of sediment caused by solifluction on stream side slopes in the downstream were 1.3~1.7 times as large as those in the upstream. The pH of sediment caused by solifluction was a potential influence on the pH of stream water. Amounts of dissolved $Cl^-$, $NO_3{^-}$ and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ in stream water were proportion to the average amounts of $Cl^-$, $NO_3{^-}$ and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ in the sediment caused by solifluction. In the spring, the average pH of stream water was lower than the first class of the river water quality standard because of increasing chemical concentration as well as the contents of anions($Cl^-$, $NO_3{^-}$ and $SO{_4}^{2-}$) in the spring season. Also, the average electrical conductivity of water in downstream was about 2.3-3.3 times higher than that in upstream. The amounts of anions($Cl^-$, $NO_3{^-}$ and $SO{_4}^{2-}$) of water in downstream were about 1.2~7.4, 1.1~3.9, 1.1~1.4 times higher than those in upstream, respectively. Therefore, these results showed that the water quality of downstream was worse than that of upstream. As a result of regression analyses, the linear and exponential equation of pH and water quantity was pH = 1.7926 ${\times}$ stream water quantity + 5.9577($R^2=0.46$), and those of electrical conductivity and water quantity was $EC=34.417e^{3.6334{\times}\text{stream water quantity}(m^3/sec)}$ ($R^2=0.44$).

  • Water supply is decreasing due to climate change, and coastal and island regions are highly dependent on groundwater, reducing the amount of available water. For sustainable water supply in coastal and island regions, it is necessary to accurately diagnose the current condition and efficiently distribute and manage water. For a precise analysis of the groundwater flow in the coastal island region, submarine fresh groundwater discharge was calculated for the Seongsan basin in the eastern part of Jeju Island. Two methods were used to estimate the thickness of the fresh groundwater. One method employed vertical interpolation of measured electrical conductivity in a multi depth monitoring well; the other used theoretical Ghyben-Herzberg ratio. The value using the Ghyben-Herzberg ratio makes it impossible to accurately estimate the changing salt-saltwater interface, and the value analyzed by electrical conductivity can represent the current state of the freshwater-saltwater interface. Observed parameter was distributed on a virtual grid. The average of submarine fresh groundwater discharge fluxes for the virtual grid was determined as the watershed's representative flux. The submarine fresh groundwater discharge and flux distribution by year were also calculated at the basin scale. The method using electrical conductivity estimated the submarine fresh groundwater discharge from 2018 to 2020 to be 6.27 × 106 m3/year; the method using the Ghyben-Herzberg ratio estimated a discharge of 10.87 × 106 m3/year. The results presented in this study can be used as basis data for policies that determine sustainable water supply by using precise water budget analysis in coastal and island areas.

  • Recently, the population of toxic and/or unusable jellyfish is increasing during summer along the east coast of Korea, causing massive economical and ecological damage to fisheries, nuclear power plant and marine environment. To solve this problem, this study was carried out using jellyfish as a potential soil additive for horticulture. The jellyfish was solidified and homogenized, then mixed with a commercial bed soil. Allium tuberosum ROTH was planted to control bed soil (BS) and jellyfish powder mixed bed soil groups (Mixed bed soil, MBS), and following parameters were measured during five weeks: water content, electrical conductivity and growth of leaves. At the end of the experiment, bacterial community structures of each pot were analyzed by DGGE. The relative water adsorption of jellyfish powder was about 2.5 times greater compared to its dry weight. The water content of MBS group was significantly higher than BS group 6.5 to 14.2%, and the electric conductivity of MBS group was measured around 2.8 dS/m where BS group was resulted average of 1.8 dS/m. However, the leaves of BS group were grown 30% longer compared to MBS group. DGGE analysis of MBS group was shown in high number of phylum Bacteroidetes and increased diversity of Sphingobacteriia compared to BS group. Jellyfish powder as a soil additive surely will be a good candidate as humectant and microbiota stimulator, although there are several obstacles such as high electrical conductivity and residual alum salt which used for solidification of jellyfish.
