  • The prefabricated type used generally in Korea to join cable runs on new installations or to repair broken Cable runs on existing installations, because installation is very simple and save time. This type is a permanent, shielded and submersible cable joint for direct burial or vault application. It confirms to the requirements of IEEE std. 404-1993 by factory testing, but many problems of insulated cable systems are caused by internal defects of the joint part which have to be mounted ensile. Faults arise from impurities or voids. A suitable solution for a monitoring of cable joints during the after-laying test and service is partial discharge detection. <중략> $\Phi-q-n$ properties were measured using detection impedance, high pass filter and computerized data acquisition system. Statistic Value like maximum charge, repetition rate, average charge, etc. are calculated. It is possible to quantitative analysis of $\Phi-q-n$ properties from this statistic value and pattern analysis.

  • As the electrodes are not needed, the electrodeless lamps using the induction discharge have a long lifetime and are robust against the variable output condition of a ballast. This paper proposed a dimmable resonant inverter for the electrodeless lamps. The proposed resonant inverter formed a half bridge inverter adopted FWM to control the average output power of the inverter and the illumination of a lamp. In this paper, the proposed dimming algorithm was described and the prototype experimental setup for 100W electrodeless lamps was carried out to verify the validity of the proposed dimming method.

  • A algorithm for control and performance of a pulse-density-modulated (PDM) series-resonant voltage source inverter developed for corona-dischange precesses is presented. The PDM inverter produces either a square-wave ac-voltage state or a zero-voltage state at its ac terminals to control the average output voltage under constant dc voltage and operating frequency. Moreover it can achieve zero-current-switching (ZCS) and zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) in all the operating condition for a reduction of switching lost. Even though the corona discharge load with a strong nonlinear characteristics, new high frequency resonant inverter is shown the wide range power control from 5% to 100%.

  • The electronic ballasts for low pressure discharge lamps are produced and commercialized. However, the electronic ballasts for high pressure lamps are now in progress because of poor reliability and high cost. The major case of troubles with electronic ballasts are thermal destruction of semiconductor output switches due to non ideal i-v characteristics of switch. The loss converts to heat and rises the temperature of switch and it increases proportionally to switching frequency and value of current and voltage. This study shows the variable frequency ballasts which can suppress the heating of switches efficiently. It is used for the limitation the switch current and the rising temperature of switch by impedance variation of lamp inductor. As a result, initial warm-up time of the proposed ballasts was faster than that of magnetic ballasts about 90 msec. Power factor of tested ballasts follow as ; input and output average of magnetic ballasts are 93 [%] and 86 [%], respectively, And proposed ballasts are 97 [%] and 99 [%], respectively.

  • Various core designs with multi-batch fuel management (FM) are proposed and optimized for an innovative small modular reactor (iSMR), focusing on enhancing the inherent safety and neutronic performance. To achieve soluble-boron-free (SBF) operation, cylindrical centrally-shielded burnable absorbers (CSBAs) are utilized, reducing the burnup reactivity swing in both two- and three-batch FMs. All 69 fuel assemblies (FAs) are loaded with 2-cylindrical CSBA. Furthermore, the neutron economy is improved by deploying a truly-optimized PWR (TOP) lattice with a smaller fuel radius, optimized for neutron moderation under the SBF condition. The fuel shuffling and CSBA loading patterns are proposed for both 2- and 3-batch FM with the aim to lower the core leakage and achieve favorable power profiles. Numerical results show that both FM configurations achieve a small reactivity swing of about 1000 pcm and the power distributions are within the design criteria. The average discharge burnup in the two-batch core is comparable to three-batch commercial PWR like APR-1400. The proposed checker-board CR pattern with extended fingers effectively assures cold shutdown in the two-batch FM scenario, while in the three-batch FM, three N-1 scenarios are failed. The whole evaluation process is conducted using Monte Carlo Serpent 2 code in conjunction with ENDF/B-VII.1 nuclear library.

  • Pt is still considered as one of the most active electrocatalysts for ORR in alkaline fuel cells. However, the high cost and scarcity of Pt hamper the widespread commercialization of fuel cells. As a strong candidate for the replacement of Pt catalyst, silver (Ag) has been extensively studied due to its high activity, abundance, and low cost. Ag is more stable than Pt in the pH range of 8~14 as the equilibrium potential of Ag/Ag+ being ${\approx}200mV$ higher than that of Pt/PtO. However, Ag is the overall catalytic activity of Ag for oxygen reduction reaction(ORR) is still not comparable to Pt catalyst since the surface Ag atoms are approximately 10 times less active than Pt atoms. Therefore, further enhancement in the ORR activity of Ag catalysts is necessary to be competitive with current cutting-edge Pt-based catalysts. We demonstrate the architectural design of Ag catalysts, synthesized using plasma discharge in liquid phase, for enhanced ORR kinetics in alkaline media. An attractive feature of this work is that the plasma status controlled via electric-field could form the Ag nanowires or dendrites without any chemical agents. The plasma reactor was made of a Teflon vessel with an inner diameter of 80 mm and a height of 80 mm, where a pair of tungsten(W) electrodes with a diameter of 2 mm was placed horizontally. The stock solutions were made by dissolving the 5-mM AgNO3 in DI water. For the synthesis of Agnanowires, the electricfield of 3.6kVcm-1 in a 200-ml AgNO3 aqueous solution was applied across the electrodes using a bipolar pulsed power supply(Kurita, Seisakusyo Co. Ltd). The repetition rate and pulse width were fixed at 30kHz and 2.0 us, respectively. The plasma discharge was carried out for a fixed reaction time of 60 min. In case of Ag nanodendrites, the electric field of 32kVcm-1 in a 200-ml AgNO3 aqueous solution was applied and other conditions were identical to the plasma discharge in water in terms of electrode configuration, repetition rate and discharge time. Using SEM and STEM, morphology of Ag nanowires and dendrites were investigated. With 3.6 kV/cm, Ag nanowire was obtained, while Ag dendrite was constructed with 32 kV/cm. The average diameter and legth of Ag nanowireses were 50 nm and 3.5 um, and thoes values of Ag dendrites were 40 nm and 3.0 um. As a results of XPS analysis, the surface defects in the Ag nanowires facilitated O2 incorporation into the surface region via the interaction between the oxygen and the electron cloud of the adjacent Ag atoms. The catalytic activity of Ag for oxygen reduction reaction(ORR) showed that the catalytic ORR activity of Ag nanowires are much better than Ag nanodendrites, and electron transfer number of Ag nanowires is similar to that of Pt (${\approx}4$).

  • Inventories, and characteristics such as dimension, fuel rod array, weight, $^{235}U$ enrichment, and discharge burnup of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) generated from existing and planed nuclear power plants based on National 2nd Basic Plan for Electric Power Demand and Supply were investigated and projected to support geological disposal system design. The historical and projected inventory by the end 2057 is expected to be 20,500 and 14,800MTU for PWR and CANDU spent nuclear fuel, respectively. The quantity of SNF with initial $^{235}U$ enrichment of 4.5 wt.% and below was shown to be 96.5% in total. Average burnup of SNF revealed $\sim36$ GWD/MTU and $\sim40$ GWD/MTU for the period of 1994-1999 and 2000-2003, respectively. It is expected that the average burnup of SNF will be $\sim45$ GWD/MTU at the end of 2000's. From the comprehensive study, it was concluded that the imaginary SNF with $16\times16$ Korean Standard Fuel Assembly, cross section of $21.4cm\times21.4cm$, length of 453cm, mass of 672 kg, initial $^{235}U$ enrichment of 4.5 wt.%, discharge burnup of 55 GWD/MTU could cover almost all SNFs to be produced by 2057.

  • This paper proposes a particle swarm optimization (PSO)-based peak shaving scheme using energy storage system (ESS) for electricity tariff reduction. The proposed scheme compares the actual load with the estimated load consumption, calculates the additional output power that the ESS needs to discharge additionally to reduce peak load, and adds the input. In addition, in order to compensate for the additional power, the process of allocating power to the determined point is performed, and an optimization that minimizes the average of the load expected at the active power allocations using PSO so that the allocated value does not affect the peak load. To investigated the performance of the proposed scheme, case study of small and large load prediction errors was conducted by reflecting actual load data and load prediction algorithm. As a result, when the proposed scheme is performed with the ESS charge and discharge control to reduce electricity tariff, even when the load prediction error is large, the peak load is successfully reduced, and the peak load reduction effect of 17.8% and electricity tariff reduction effect of 6.02% is shown.
