  • In recent years, environments of our globe has been getting worse as a result of rapid growth of socioeconomic activities. The global environmental issues of acid rain, green house effect and ozone depletion are caused by various chemical pollutants, emitted from industries, automobiles and home. Most of these pollutants are produced by combustion processes. CO2 as a chief criminal of the greenhouse effect is a main combustion product of fossil fuels. Development of solid-state electrochemical devices for detecting CO2 is demonstrated based on various combination of solid electrolytes and auxiliary sensing materials. The object of this research is to develop various sensor performance for solid electrolyte gas sensor, and to test gas sensor performance manufactured. So we try to present a guidance for developing potential type gas sensor. We concentrated on development of manufacturing process and performance test.

  • Korea Electric Power Research Institute has developed the in-house safety analysis methodologies for non-LOCA(Loss Of Coolant Accident) events based on codes and methodologies of vendors and Electric Power Research Institute . According to the new methodologies, analyses of system responses and calculation of DNBR(Departure from Nucleate Boiling Ratio) during the transient have been carried out with RETRAN code and a sub-channel analysis code, respectively. However, it takes too much time to calculate DNBR for each case using the two codes to search for the limiting case from sensitivity study. To simplify the search for the limiting case, accordingly, RETRAN code has been modified to roughly calculate DNBR using hot channel modeling. The W-3 correlation is already included in RETRAN as one of the auxiliary DNBR models. However, WRB-1 and WRB-2 correlations required to analyze some Westinghouse type fuels are not considered in RETRAN DNBR models. In this paper, the RETRAN DNBR models using the correlations have been developed and the partial and complete loss of forced reactor coolant flow events have been analyzed for Yonggwang units 1 and 2 with the new methodologies to validate the models. The results of the analyses have been compared with those mentioned in the chapter 15 of the Final Safety Analysis Report.

  • Automobile manufacturers in each country are spurring the development of electric vehicles that use electric energy, an eco-friendly energy, as a futuristic vehicle. Electric vehicles have the advantage of no harmful gas or environmental pollution and low noise. Unlike automobiles using existing internal combustion engines using fossil fuels, electric vehicles use the electricity of batteries to cause rotational motion of motors. In the electric vehicle driven by the motor, it is indispensable to develop a controller for controlling the motor. One of the areas where automobile manufacturers are concentrating is the development of small electric vehicles as a personal transportation means. Small electric vehicles such as electric motorcycles, one-seat electric vehicles and two-seat electric vehicles are expanding the market as a means of operating throughout the city. In the domestic road conditions with many hills, it is effective to have a separate transmission system for small electric vehicles to drive smoothly. In this study, we propose a new type of continuously variable transmission(CVT) system to ensure that small electric vehicles can be driven smoothly in hilly domestic terrain. The proposed CVT system is equipped with a basic disk and a rotational disk in the driving pulley and the driven pulley, respectively, and is applied with a sloping spline to rotate the rotational disk. To commercialize the proposed CVT system, an experimental device was developed to examine the power transmission efficiency and the configuration of the CVT system was proposed.

  • Polymer electrolyte fuel cells(PEFC) have been considered to be a suitable candidate for residential, portable and mobile applications, due to their high efficiency and power density, even at low operating temperature. KIER developed a 5kW class PEFC system for residential application and operated the system for over 1,000 hours. To develop a 5kW PEFC system, performance of a cell was improved through successive tests of single cell of small and large area. Fabrication of three 2,5 kW class stacks, design and fabrication of natural gas reformer, design of auxiliary equipments such as DC/DC converter, DC/AC inverter and humidifying units were carried out along with integration of components, operation and evaluation of total system. During the development period from 1999 to 2001, MEA(membrane electrode assembly) fabrication technologies, design and fabrication technologies for separators, stacking technologies and so on were developed, thereby providing basis for developing stacks of higher efficiency and power density in the future. Experience of development of natural gas reformer opened possibilities to use various kinds of fuels. Main results obtained from the development of a 5kW class PEFC system for residential application are summarized.

  • In Korea, attention is being paid to the use of renewable energy in the livestock industry, and Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP), which is advantageous for temperature control, is considered as one of the ways to reduce the use of fossil fuels. But GSHP is expensive to install, which proper capacity calculation is required. GSHP capacity is related to its maximum energy load. Energy loads are affected by climate characteristics and time, so dynamic analysis is required. In this study, the optimal capacity of GSHP was calculated by calculating the heating and cooling load of pig farms using BES (Building Energy Simulation) and economic analysis was performed. After designing the inside of the pig house using TRNSYS, one of the commercial programs of the BES technique, the energy load was calculated based on meteorological data. Through the calculated energy load, three heating devices and GSHP used in pig farms were analyzed for economic feasibility. As a result, GSHP's total cost of ownership was the cheapest, but the installation cost was the highest. In order to reduce the initial cost of GSHP, the capacity of GSHP was divided, and a scenario was created in which some of it was used as an auxiliary heating device, and economic analysis was conducted. In this study, a method to calculate the proper capacity of GSHP through dynamic energy analysis was proposed, and it can be used as data necessary to expand the spread of GSHP.

  • One of the most critical issues in sol id oxide fuel cell (SOFC)running on hydrocarbon fuels is the risk of carbon formation from the fuel gas. The simple method to reduce the risk of carbon formation from the reactions is to add steam to the fuel stream, leading to the carbon gasification react ion. However, the addition of steam to fuel is not appropriate for the auxiliary power unit (APU) and potable power generation (PPG) systems due to an increase of complexity and bulkiness. In this regard, many researchers have focused on so-called 'direct methane' operation of SOFC, which works with dry methane without coking. However, coking can be suppressed only by the operation with a high current density, which may be a drawback especially for the APU and PPG systems. The single chamber fuel cell (SC-SOFC) is a novel simplification of the conventional SOFC into which a premixed fuel/air mixture is introduced. It relies on the selectivity of the anode and cathode catalysts to generate a chemical potential gradient across the cell. Moreover it allows compact and seal-free stack design. In this study, we fabricated honeycomb type mixed-gas fuel cell (MGFC) which has advantages of stacking to the axial direction and increasing volume power density. Honeycomb-structured SOFC with four channels was prepared by dry pressing method. Two alternative channels were coated with electrolyte and cathode slurry in order to make cathodic reaction sites. We will discuss that the anode supported honeycomb type cell running on mixed gas condition.

  • The perovskite solar cell is an active part of research in renewable energy fields such as solar energy, wind, hydroelectric power, marine energy, bioenergy, and hydrogen energy to replace fossil fuels such as oil, coal, and natural gas, which will gradually disappear as power demand increases due to the increase in use of the Internet of Things and Virtual environments due to the 4th industrial revolution. The perovskite solar cell is a solar cell device using an organic-inorganic hybrid material having a perovskite structure, and has advantages of replacing existing silicon solar cells with high efficiency, low cost solutions, and low temperature processes. In order to optimize the light absorption layer thin film predicted by the existing empirical method, reliability must be verified through device characteristics evaluation. However, since it costs a lot to evaluate the characteristics of the light-absorbing layer thin film device, the number of tests is limited. In order to solve this problem, the development and applicability of a clear and valid model using machine learning or artificial intelligence model as an auxiliary means for optimizing the light absorption layer thin film are considered infinite. In this study, to estimate the light absorption layer thin-film optimization of perovskite solar cells, the regression models of the support vector machine's linear kernel, R.B.F kernel, polynomial kernel, and sigmoid kernel were compared to verify the accuracy difference for each kernel function.

  • The main objective of this study is to investigate the characteristics of combustion by analyzing fuel gases from a combustion equipment with various combustion conditions for refuse-derived fuels (RDFs). CO gas is a parameter for indicating of incomplete combustion during a combustion process. The lowest CO gas was produced when the experiment conditions were m=2 under air-fuel condition and $800^{\circ}C$. $CO_2$ gas is a final product after complete combustions. The highest amount of $CO_2$ gas was produced when the experiment conditions were m=2 under air-fuel condition and $800^{\circ}C$. The highest level of $SO_2$ gas was produced in S.1 sample containing the highest sulfur. The highest level of NOx gas was produced in S.1 sample with the highest nitrogen content and air-fuel condition of m=2 under temperature of $800^{\circ}C$. HCl gas that is generated by reacting with metals catalyst through oxygen catalyst reaction during combustion process is a precursor of dioxin formation. The higher level of HCl gas was produced in the sample with higher chlorine content. The lowest level of HCl gas was produced when the experiment conditions were air-fuel condition of m=2 and $800^{\circ}C$. The lowest level of $NH_3$ gas was generated when the experiment condition was m=2 under air-fuel condition and after 3 minutes. Air-fuel condition is more important to create $NH_3$ gas than operating temperatures. Higher level of $H_2S$ gas was generated in S.1 sample with the higher sulfur content and was created in RDFs that contain higher mixture ratios of sewage sludge and food wastes. A result of combustion, gases and gases levels from the combustion of S.1 and S.2 were very similar to the combustion of a stone coal. As results of this research, when evaluating the feasibility of the RDFs, the RDFs could be used as auxiliary and main fuels.
