The objective of this study is the rapid bulk combustion of mixture in a constant volume chamber with a tiny sub-chamber. Some narrow passage holes were arranged to induce simultaneous multi-point ignition in the main chamber by jet of burned and unburned gases including radicals from the sub-chamber, and the equivalence ratios of pre-mixture in the main chamber and the sub-chamber were the same. The principal factors of the Radical Induced Auto-Ignition (RIAI) method are the diameter of the passage holes and the volume of sub-chamber. The relationship between the sub-chamber and diameter of passage hole was represented by the ratios of sub-chamber volume to passage hole volume. The ratios are non-dimensional coefficients for sub-chamber characteristics. As a result, the RIAI method reduced the combustion period, which expanded the lean limit in comparison with SI method.

The present study is mainly motivated to investigate the vaporization, auto-ignition, and combustion of liquid fuel spray injected into high pressure environment. The unsteady, multi-dimensional models were used for realistic simulation of spray as well as prediction of accurate ignition delay time. The Separated Flow (SF) model which considers the finite rate of transport between liquid and gas phases was employed to represent the interactions between spray and gas field. Among the SF models, the Discrete Droplet Model (DDM) which simulates the spray using finite number of representative samples of discrete droplets was adopted. The Eulerian-Lagrangian formulation was used to analyze the two-phase interactions. In order to predict an evaporation rate of droplet in high pressure environment, the high pressure vaporization model was applied using thermodynamic equilibrium and phase equilibrium at droplet surface. The high pressure effect as well as high temperature effect was considered in the calculation of liquid and gas properties. In case of vaporization, an interaction between droplets was studied through the simulation of spray. The interaction is shown up differently whether the ambient gas field is at normal pressure or high pressure. Also, the characteristics of spray behavior in high pressure environment were investigated through the comparison with normal ambient pressure case. In both cases, the spray behaviors are simulated through the distributions of temperature and reaction rate in gas field.

The multi-stage catalytic igniter for hybrid rocket auto ignition is described in this paper. After charging the catalyst and pre-heating the first stage, the $N_2O$ was supplied at the first stage with the low mass flow rate, and then the $N_2O$ with the high flow rate was supplied into the second stage. Even though the $N_2O$ flow rate was high, it was decomposed by supplying the high temperature gas which was evolved from the $N_2O$ decomposition in the first stage. This multi-stage ignitor resulted in the decrease of the ignition time in comparison with the previous ignitor, and confirmed the possibility of $N_2O$ decomposition with the high flow rate using the multi-stage catalytic-ignition system.

To theoretically predict knock occurrence in S. I. engine as a function of engine design and operating parameters, transient local temperature and pressure, mixture density of flame front in combustion period are calculated. We next determined normal combustion period and auto ignition period of end gas using the prediction method on occurrence of spark knock which we suggested. We predict knock occurrence in S. I. engine by comparing consecutively normal combustion period with the auto ignition period of end gas in combustion period. Engine design and operating parameters such as compression ratio, engine speed, spark timing, inlet temperature and pressure are taken into account in this calculations. The predicted result are well matched with the experimental results in turbocharged engine. Therefore, this method will provide the systematic guideline for designing engines in view of knocking limits.
The flash point and the AIT(auto-ignition temperature) are the most important combustible properties used to determine the potential for the fire and explosion hazards of flammable material. In order to know the accuracy of data in MSDS(Material Safety Data Sheet), the flash point of n-acids were measured by using Pensky-Martens closed cup tester(ASTM D93), Setaflash closed cup tester(ASTM D3278), Tag open cup tester(ASTM D1310) and Cleveland open cup tester(ASTM D92). Also, the AIT of n-acids were measured by using ASTM E659-78 tester. The measured the flash points and the AIT were compared with literatures and MSDS in KOSHA. The measured the flash points and the AIT were different from those in literatures and MSDS. Therefore, This paper shows that it is needed to investigate the MSDS compatibility of n-acids for the fire safety objectives.
The present study has numerically investigates the vaporization, auto-ignition and combustion processes in the high-pressure and high-temperature conditions encountered in the diesel engine. In the present study, in order to understand the overall spray combustion characteristics of DME fuel as well as to identify the distinctive differences of DME combustion processes compared to conventional hydrocarbon liquid fuels, the sequence of the comparative analysis has been systematically made for DME and n-Heptane liquid fuels. Computations for DME fuel are made for two cases including constant fuel mass flow rate condition and fixed heat release rate. Based on numerical results, the discussions are made for the detailed combustion processes of DME and n-Heptane spray.
The present study is mainly motivated to investigate the vaporization, auto-ignition and combustion processes in high-pressure diesel engines. In order to realistically simulate the dimethyl ether (DME) fueled diesel engine, the high pressure vaporization model is utilized and the interaction between turbulence and chemistry is treated by employing the Representative Interactive Flamelet (RIF) model. The detailed chemisty consisted of 336 elementary reaction steps and 78 species is used for DME/air reaction. Numerical results indicate that the RIF model with high pressure vaporization model successfully predicts the essential feature of the combustion processes and pollutants formations in the DME fueled diesel engines.
Diesel-Fueled HCCI(Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) Engine is an advanced combustion process explained as a premixed charge of diesel fuel and air is admitted into the cylinder and compression ignited. It has possibility to reduce NOx by spontaneous auto-ignition at multiple points that allows very lean combustion resulting in low combustion temperatures. Also PM could be reduced by the premixed combustion and no fuel-rich zones. But HCCI couldn't be realized because of the difficulties in vaporizing the diesel, control of combustion phase directly. To solve these problems, new fuel injection strategy, explained as the pilot fuel injection to promote ignition near TDC following the main fuel injection at the extremely advanced timing, is applied during the compression ratio is varied from 18.9:1 to 27.7:1 This is not a pilot fuel to promote the ignition but also the direct control method of the combustion phase. Experimental result shows the pilot fuel injection promote the ignition and the compression ignition of the HCCI engine is achieved as compression ratio becomes higher. Also there is an optimal pilot fuel injection timing for the HCCI combustion. NOx is reduced more than 90% compared to DI-Diesel case but PM and THC emission needs more investigation.

This work deals with a controlled auto-ignition (CAI) single cylinder gasoline engine, focusing on the extension of operating conditions. The fuel is injected indirectly into electrically heated inlet air flow. In order to keep a homogeneous air-fuel mixing, the fuel injector is water-cooled by a specially designed coolant passage. Investigated are the engine performance and emission characteristics under the wide range of operating conditions such as 32 to 63 in the air-fuel ratio, 1000 to 1800 rpm in the engine speed, and 150 to 18$0^{\circ}C$ in the inlet air temperature. The compression ignition gasoline engine can be achieved that the ultra lean-burn with self-ignition of gasoline fuel by heating inlet air. For example. the allowable lean limit of air-fuel ratio is extended until 63 at engine speed of 1000 rpm and inlet air temperature of 17$0^{\circ}C$. It can be achieved that the emission concentrations of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide had been significantly reduced by CAI combustion compared with conventional spark ignition engine.

The radiation effects on the auto-ignition and extinction characteristics of a non-premixed fuel-air counterflow field were numerically investigated. A detailed reaction mechanism of GRI-v3.0 was used for the calculation of chemical reactions and the optically-thin radiation model was adopted in the simulations. The flame-controlling continuation method was also used in the simulation to predict the auto-ignition point and extinction limits precisely. As a result, it was found that the maximum H radical concentration, $(Y_H)_{max}$, rather than the maximum temperature was suitable to understand the ignition and extinction behaviors. S-, C- and O-curves, which were well known from the previous theory, were identified by investigating the $(Y_H)_{max}$. The radiative heat loss fraction ($f_r$) and spatially-integrated heat release rate (IHRR) were introduced to grasp each extinction mechanism. It was also found that the $f_r$ was the highest at the radiative extinction limit. At the flame stretch extinction limit, the flame was extinguished due to the conductive heat loss which attributed to the high strain rate although the heat release rate was the highest. The radiation affected on the radiative extinction limit and auto-ignition point considerably, however the effect on the flame stretch extinction limit was negligible. A stable flame regime defined by the region between each extinction limit became wide with increasing the fuel temperature.
