440A martensitic stainless steels which were modified with reduced carbon content (${\sim}$0.5%) and addition of small amount of nickel, vanadium, tungsten and molybdenum were manufactured. Effects of alloying elements and heat treatment on the pitting corrosion in 3.5% NaCl were investigated through the electrochemical polarization tests. The lowest pitting potential, $E_p$, was obtained when austenitizing temperature was $1250^{\circ}C$ and this is because of the grain coarsening. When austenitized at $1050^{\circ}C$ and tempered at $350{\sim}750^{\circ}C$, the highest $E_p$ was obtained at $350^{\circ}C$, while the lowest at $450^{\circ}C$ and $550^{\circ}C$ regardless of alloying elements added. But $E_p$ was increased a little at the tempering temperature of $450^{\circ}C$ and $550^{\circ}C$ when 0.4 wt.% of tungsten was added. More pitting was observed at $450{\sim}550^{\circ}C$, and pitting was formed at regions where Cr concentration is low or grain boundaries are intersecting and showed irregular shape.
The hardenability of alloyed ductile cast irons was studied for 54 different alloy compositions obtained from eight commercial and laboratory foundries. The alloying elements investigated for their effects on hardenability were Si(2.0 to 3.0%), Mn(0.0 to 0.8%), Mo(0.0 to 0.6%), Cu(0.0 to 1.5%), and Ni(0.0 to 1.5%). Two hardenability criteria, a first-pearlite hardenability criterion and a half-hard hardenability criterion, were used to determine hardenability of ductile irons. Prediction models for each hardenability criterion were developed by multiple regression analysis and were well agreed with previous experimental results. Molybdenum was the most potent hardenability promoting element followed by manganese, copper and nickel ; silicon had little effect on hardenability and reduced the hardenability as silicon content increased. When alloying elements were presented in combination, strong synergistic effects on the hardenability were observed especially between molybdenum, copper and nickel. The hardenability of ductile iron was strongly influenced by austenitizing temperature. Increasing austenitizing temperature up to $955^{\circ}C$, hardenability increased gradually but decreasing rate and then decreased as temperature increased above $955^{\circ}C$. Unless reducing segregation by very long-time annealing treatment, the hardenability of ductile iron was not significantly influenced by segregation of alloying elements.
The study was investigated on the effect of austenitizing and austempering conditions on retained austenite amount and carbon contents in retained austenite and simultaneously the effect of these variation on hardness, tensile and impact properties. A material of as-cast condition is composed of bull's eye structure with ferrite surrounding spheroidized graphite having about $5-10{\mu}m$ size and matrix structure of pearlite. Then, the contents of spheroidized graphite was about 5%. The retained austenite and carbon contents in the retained austenite were increased with the increasing of austenitizing and austempering temperatures, while the retained austenite showed the peak value and is decreased with increasing of austempering time. With increasing of austenitizing temperature, tensile strength, elongation and impact absorb energy increased and hardness was almost not changed, while with increasing of austempering temperature, tensile strength and hardness decreased, whereas elongation and impact absorb energy was increased. With increasing of retained austenite amount, the tensile strength is slowly decreased but elongation was increased with direct proportion. Also, Impact absorb energy is shown identity value untile about 18%, but rapidly increased above it. Elongation and Impact absorb energy are strongly controlled by the amount of retained austenite, but tensile strength is affected with various factors such as retained austenite amount and bainitic morphology.
In order to investigate the variation of microstructure and property of the Electro-slag Remelted M2 steel, microstructure observation, hardness, and bending test were performed by using optical microscope. SEM/EDS, rockwell hardness tester, charpy impact tester and bending tester, respectively. It was revealed that the number of inclusions and content of gas elements(S, O, N) in M2 steel fabricated by ESR process decreased markedly compared to those of AIM. It seems to be due to refining effect of ESR process. The volume fraction of carbides in quenched and tempered specimens after austenitizing at 1150$^{\circ}C$ and 1240$^{\circ}C$ was measured. The volume fraction of grain boundary carbides were found to be similar for both specimens. However, The volume fraction of carbides in grain decreased with an increase of austenitizing temperature. When specimen was austenitized at 1150$^{\circ}C$, grain boundary carbides showed needle like morphology. But, the carbides were broken with an increase of austenitizing temperature. The specimen austenitized at 1240$^{\circ}C$ showed higher hardness and lower bending strength compared to that of 1150$^{\circ}C$. As expected, toughness increased with sub-zero quenching treatment.
The effects of austenitizing temperatures and times and cooling rate on the characteristics of continuous air cooling have been investigated for 0.3%C-Mn steels microalloyed with vanadium. Transformation start temperatures have been found to be measured from temperature-time curve directly obtained with continuous air cooling and to decrease with increasing austenitizing temperature, cooling rate and Mn contents. The coarsening behavior of austenite grain size has been measured to abnormally grow at $1050^{\circ}C$ and rapidly grow at $1200^{\circ}C$. It has been found that the volume fraction of pearlite was linealy proportional to the reciprocal square root of austenite grain size. The hardness has been measured to increase with increasing cooling rate up to $250^{\circ}C/min.$ and to remain relatively unchanged in the range of $250{\sim}400^{\circ}C/min.$ showing that hardness valves for steel with a higher Mn content increase more than those for steel with a lower Mn content. The impact property has been found to decrease with increasing of austenite grain size but does not linealy change with the reciprocal square root of austenite grain size.
As a basic research for developing 600 MPa yield strength reinforcing steel bars, the strengthening of 0.25 wt.% carbon steel by vanadium addition was studied. The changes of microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated for the specimen V0 (0.00 wt.% V), V1 (0.03 wt.% V) and V2 (0.06 wt.% V) processed by various heat treatments. To set the heat treatment conditions, the continuous cooling transformation (CCT) curves were drawn for austenitizing temperatures of $900^{\circ}C$ and $1100^{\circ}C$. For specimens tempered at $600^{\circ}C$ after quenching from $900^{\circ}C$ and $1100^{\circ}C$, yield strength was increased by 19 MPa and 21 MPa for 0.01 wt % V addition, and tensile strength was increased by 25 MPa and 28 MPa for 0.01 wt % V addition, respectively. Also, for 0.06 wt.% V added specimens tempered after quenching and normalized, tensile strength was increased by 50 MPa and 30 MPa for increasing austenitizing temperature of $100^{\circ}C$, respectively.
In this study, the measurement of FN (ferrite volume fraction) and the solution annealing ratio at a temperature of $1130^{\circ}C$ were determined with 15A elbow fittings of shell cast SSC13, and the corrosion resistance with and without austenitizing solution annealing were investigated in comparison with AISI304. The delta ferrite phase was observed in the material due to the slow cooling effect of the shell mold casting. However, the delta ferrite phase decreased gradually with the solution annealing at a temperature of $1130^{\circ}C$. The hardness generally decreased with a heat treatment; however, its corrosion resistance was improved with the heat treatment. In addition, when a passivation treatment was applied, its corrosion ratio showed the lowest value. The pattern of general corrosion decreased due to the decrease in the delta ferrite phase with the solution annealing treatment. Consequently, it is suggested that the corrosion resistance of SSC13 elbow fittings can be improved by increasing the ratio of any solution annealing treatment used and by decreasing the ferrite phase. The relationship between the ratio of solution annealing and delta ferrite is expressed as follows: SA (solution annealing ratio,%) = 98 - FN (ferrite volume fraction, %).
Isothermal transformation behavior during patenting and variations of microstructure and tensile strength of patented wires were investigated in Si-added high carbon steel. The TTT curves of the steels were made for two different austenitizing temperature. As the salt bath temperature was increased, the observed microstructures were bainite at $450^{\circ}C$, the mixture of bainite and pearlite at $500^{\circ}C$, and to pearlite at $600^{\circ}C$, The tensile strength of patented wire exhibited the highest value when the structure was pearlite. while the bainitic structure showed the lowest.
This study is aimed to investigate the effects of the multi-phase(ferrite-bainite-martensite) on the strengthening and toughening in ductile cast iron. All the specimen were austenitized at eutectoid transformation temperature range(${\alpha}+{\gamma}$) for 1hr and austempered at $300^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$ for various holding time, and then quenched in iced water for multi - phase (${\alpha}-B-M$). When the volume fraction of martensite is below 15%, excellent maximum fracture load can be obtained due to strengthening by the fine martensite, but, with increasing of volume fraction over 15%, it was decreased drastically. The martensite size became finer and the shape of it changed from bar to spherical type with increasing of austempering holding time. The higher the austenitizing temperature is, the more preferential is the formation of austenite phase around the graphite nodules improving strength and toughness of austempered ductile cast iron.
13%Cr martensitic stainless steel was microalloyed with 0~1.5%Mo, and the mechanical properties were tested at the various heat treated conditions. Mo addition increased austenitization temperature(Ac1), and had little influence on the hardness and tensile properties at the annealed condition. The higher the austenitizing temperature, the higher the hardness and tensile strength, but Mo addition decreased those properties. The impact energy after austenitization increased with addition of Mo. The decrease of mechanical properties and increase of impact energy of Mo-alloyed steel after austenitization are thought to be caused by formation of ductile ${\delta}$-ferrite phase in the microstructure.
