This paper replaces an conventional 300-austenitic stainless steel sheet to a 400-ferritic stainless steel for the cost reduction of a pulsator cover of a washing machine. However, ferritic stainless steel has poor formability in comparison with austenitic one. The low formability of ferritic steel results in problems during stamping such as fracture, wrinkling, shape inaccuracy and so on. Design modification of the stamping tool is carried out with the aid of the finite element analysis for multi-stage stamping process. The simulation results show that fracture occurs on top of the product while wrinkles are generated by the excess metal near the wing part. Modification of the initial stamping die is performed to improve metal flow and to eliminate problems during the stamping process. Simulation with the modified design fully demonstrates that safe forming is possible without inferiorities.
The effect of grain size on the tensile properties and fatigue behavior of austenitic high Mn steel has been investigated. The recrystallized austenite grain size of the cold rolled high Mn steel was increased as the annealing temperature increased from $600^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$. Larger austenite grain size decreased the yield strength and the tensile strength, and increased the uniform elongation due to transformation of some austenite into twins or E-martensite phase during deformation. Austenite grain refinement increased the tendency to form dislocation cells, instead. The specimen annealed at $1000^{\circ}C$ with large grain size showed lower fatigue crack propagation rate in low ${\Delta}K$ region due to rougher fracture surface caused by formation of deformation twins during fatigue at the crack tip region.
Gas nitriding and post oxidation were performed on stainless steels and SACM 645 steel. With increasing gas nitriding time, the increasing rate of nitrided layer was most rapid on SACM 645 steel and the nitriding depth of nitrided layer was most narrow on STS 304 steel among three steels. Corrosion resistance was increased with post oxidation on stainless steels and with increasing time the effect of corrosion resistance was decreased to compare with relatively short gas nitriding time. An improvement effect of corrosion resistance was consisted of predominantly on austenitic stainless steel by post oxidation after gas nitriding among three steels and it was relatively less influenced on martensitic stainless steel.
The effect of the welding speeds on the weld bead shape, microstructure, and mechanical properties in type 304 austenitic stainless steels was investigated by microscopic test, Erichsen test and tensile test. In this study welds were produced using autogeneous Direct Current Straight Polarity (DCSP) and pulsed current GTA welding. This study shows the ferrite content, ductility, tensile strength and elongation of high speed welds are decreased with increasing welding speed. The high speed welds exhibits satisfactory tensile strength, though the ductility is not good as that of the base metal.
Microstructure and tensile property in the weld heat-affected zone (HAZ) of austenitic Fe-Mn-Al-C low density steels were investigated through transmission electron microscopy analysis and tensile tests. The HAZ samples were prepared using Gleeble simulation with high heat input welding condition of 300 kJ/cm, and the HAZ peak temperature of $1200^{\circ}C$ was determined from differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) test. The strain- stress responses of base steels showed that the addition of V improved the tensile and yield strength by grain refinement and precipitation strengthening. Tensile strength and elongation decreased in the weld HAZ as compared to the base steel, due to grain growth, while V-added steel had a higher HAZ strength as compared than V-free steel.
Variable weld bead penetrations related to the base metal chemistry of stainless steels in GTA welding have been under constant investigations due to their industrial implications. It has been proposed that among other elements, the sulfur content of steels determines the weld pool geometry, particularly its penetration. It is suggested that the surface tension temperature gradient of steels becomes positive with appropriate dosing in sulfur and results in inward melt flow, propitious for deeper welds. However, the chemistry of industrial steels is complex due to the presence of multiple minor elements either deliberately added or remnant impurity traces. With this in view, investigations on 41 austenitic and nine martensitic stainless steels were carried to see if there existed any possible relation between the weld profile and some of the designated elements. The results suggest no direct correlation between sulfur or any other major or trace element and weld penetration. At first glance the results are contradictory to what is often asserted.
To investigate transition region in welded overlay relating to disbonding crack, the effect of vanadium addition on disbonding of Cr-Mo steels overlay welded with austenitic stainless steel was studied. V modified Cr-Mo steels have a higher resistance to disbonding than V free Cr-Mo steel. One reason is due to the fact that fine vanadium carbide precipated in base metal traps hydrogen and thus decreases the susceptibility to the disbonding. The second is related to the higher stability of the vanadium and stable carbides formed during PWHT, in which the carbon diffusion to the interface is lower than for V free Cr-Mo steel. Decreasing the carbon content at the interface of the weld overlay shows good resistance to the disbonding. Hence, it is important to control the carbon content at the interface of the weld overlay.
In case of hardfaced wrapping roll, beadmark shape appear at wrapping roll surface due to irregular wear between weld bead. Irregular wear of this is caused by difference of hardness between weld bead. This study aims at investigating which matrix is good for removing of beadmark at wrapping roll surface. So, we make specimen with martensitic matrix and austenitic matrix. The hardfacing alloys were deposited 4 times on a SS41 steel plate using self-shielding flux cored arc welding method. Difference of hardness between weld bead of specimen with matrix of martensite was higher than specimen with matrix of austenite both as-welded and after heat treatment. Therefore, austenitic matrix is better than martensitic matrix for removing of beadmark of wrapping roll surface.
The mechanical properties of Cr-Ni alloy of austenitic stainless steel and Co-Cr alloy orthodontic wires were studied in tension. The wires (0.018 inch) were tested in the as-manufactured and heat-treated conditions. Instron type tension testing machine was used for this study. Mean values and standard deviations were computed. The results were as follows; 1. The Cr-Ni orthodontic wires of austenitic stainless steel are generally superior than the Co-Cr orthodontic wires in ultimate tensile strength, In the elongation, however, Co-Cr orthodontic wire are superior than Cr-Ni orthodontic wires. 2. Increase in the degree of strength by heat treatment are more clearly shown in Co-Cr orthodontic wires than Cr-Ni orthodontic wires. And the elongation is decreased by heat treatment in both case. 3. The changes of the degree of strength by cooling method we not clearly shown, but in Cr-Ni orthodontic wires, air cooling are more effective, in Co-Cr orthodontic wires, cooling effect are scarcely shown.
