  • This study investigated the optimum positions and warning foreperiod for auditory signals with an experiment on spatial stimulus-response (S-R) compatibility effects. The auditory signals were presented at the front-right, front-left, rear-right, and rear-left positions from the subjects, whose reaction times and accuracies at different spatial mapping conditions were examined. The results showed a significant spatial stimulus-response compatibility effect in which faster and more accurate responses were obtained in the transversely and longitudinally compatible condition while the worst performance was found when spatial stimulus-response compatibility did not exist in either orientation. It was also shown that the transverse compatibility effect was found significantly stronger than the longitudinal compatibility effect. The effect of signal position was found significant and post hoc test suggested that the emergent warning alarm should be placed on the front-right position for right-handed users. The warning foreperiod prior to the signal presentation was shown to influence reaction time and a warning foreperiod of 3 s is found optimal for the 2-choice auditory reaction task.

  • In this study, we constructed a virtual auditory display(VAD) that enables listener to move in a room freely. The VAD system was installed in a soundproof room($4.7m(W){\times}2.8m(D){\times}3.0m(H)$). The system consisted of a personal computer, a sound presentation device, and a three-dimensional ultrasound sensor system. This system acquires listener's location and position from a three-dimension ultrasonic sensor system covering the entire room. Localization was realized by convolving the sound source with head related transfer functions(HRTFs) on personal computer(PC). The calculated result is generated through a LADOMi(Localization Auditory Display with Opened ear-canal for Mixed Reality). The HRTFs used in the experiment were measured for each listener with loudspeakers constantly 1.5m away from the center of the listener' s head in an anechoic room. To evaluate the system performance, we experimented a search task of a sound source position in the condition that the listener is able to move all around the room freely. As a result, the positioning error of presented sound source was within 30cm in average for all listeners.

  • In the present study, we measured the performance (accuracy and reaction time) of the user in the virtual environment with see-through Head-Mounted Display system that includes 3D sound generated through Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF) to investigate the feasibility of auditory display for a certain object's spatial information. To sum up the results of two experiments, when presenting location information of the object with 3D sound, it is desirable that information arrangement from the user should be an orthogonal pattern which is located with right angle, not a diagonal pattern. Like these results propose that spatial information presentation with 3D sound make the optimal object arrangement of virtual environment possible.

  • Driving aircraft requires extremely complicated and detailed information processing. Pilots perform their tasks by selecting the information relevant to them. In this processing, spatial information presented simultaneously through crossmodal link is advantageous over the one provided in singular sensory mode. In this paper, probability to apply providing visual spatial information along with auditory information to enemy tracking system in aircraft navigation is empirically investigated. The result shows that auditory spatial information, which is virtually created through HRTF is advantageous to visual spatial information alone in attention processing. The findings suggest auditory spatial information along with visual one can be presented through crossmodal link by utilizing stereophonic sound such as HRTF. which is available in the existing simple stereo system.

  • As is commonly said, music is 'language of emotions.' It is because sound is a plentiful modality to communicate the human sensibility information. However, most researches of auditory displays were focused on improving efficiency on user's performance data such as performance time and accuracy. Recently, many of researchers in auditory displays acknowledge that individual preference and sensible satisfaction may be a more important factor than the performance data. On this ground, in the present study we constructed the sound sensibility dimensions ('Pleasure', 'Complexity', and 'Activity') and systematically examined the attributes of sound on the sensibility dimensions and analyzed the meanings. As a result, sound sensibility dimensions depended on each sound attributes , and some sound attributes interact with one another. Consequently, the results of the present study will provide the useful possibilities of applying the affective influence in the field of auditory displays needing the applications of the sensibility information according to the sound attributes.

  • The application of visual and auditory senses into virtual reality is easily taken for granted, but the sense of smell has been largely ignored. But many researches have shown that olfactory stimulation in virtual environments can increase the immersion and reality. In practical virtual reality, the use of scents is not always able to increase the immersion and reality. An ill-matched scent can decrease the reality. To solve this problem, we developed scent devices that can adjustable scents and scent intensity in order to display a well-matched scents in virtual reality. And we propose simple and practical way to program specific location to display scents and developed API function to control a developed scent device at virtual reality software.
