  • Hydrogen is considered a key energy source to achieve carbon neutrality through the global goal of 'net zero'. Due to limitations in producing green hydrogen domestically, Korean companies are interested in importing green hydrogen produced overseas. The Middle East has high-quality solar energy resources and is attracting attention as a region producing green hydrogen using renewable energy. To build a green ammonia plant, optimization of the production facility configuration and economic feasibility analysis are required. It is expected that it will contribute to reviewing the economic feasibility of constructing overseas hydrogen production plants through preliminary economic feasibility analysis.

  • A triboelectric nanogenerator is a promising energy harvester operated by the combined mechanism of electrostatic induction and contact electrification. It has attracting attention as eco-friendly and sustainable energy generators by harvesting wasting mechanical energies. However, the power generated in the natural environment is accompanied by low frequencies, so that the output power under such input conditions is normally insufficient amount for a variety of industrial applications. In this study, we introduce a non-contact rotational triboelectric nanogenerator using pedaling and gear systems (called by P-TENG), which has a mechanism that produces high power by using rack gear and pinion gear when a large force by a pedal is given. We design the system can rotate the shaft to which the rotor is connected through the conversion of vertical motion to rotational motion between the rack gear and the pinion gear. Furthermore, the system controls the one directional rotation due to the engagement rotation of the two pinion gears and the one-way needle roller bearing. The TENG with a 2 mm gap between the rotor and the stator produces about the power of 200 ㎼ and turns on 82 LEDs under the condition of 800 rpm. We expect that P-TENG can be used in a variety of applications such as operating portable electronics or sterilizing contaminated water.

  • The world's electricity production ratio is 40% for coal, 20% for natural gas, 16% for hydroelectric power, 15% for nuclear power and 6% for petroleum. Fossil fuels also cause serious problems in terms of price and supply because of the high concentration of resources on the earth. Solar energy is attracting attention as a next-generation eco-friendly energy that will replace fossil fuels with these problems. In this study, we test the charge-operation plan and the discharge operation plan for peak-cut operation by applying the maximum power demand reduction simulation. To do this, we selected the electricity usage from November to February, which has the largest amount of power usage, and applied charge / discharge logic. Simulation results show that the contract power decreases as the peak demand power after the ESS Peak-cut service is reduced to 50% of the peak-target power. As a result, the contract power reduction can reduce the basic power value of the customer and not only the economic superiority can be expected, but also contribute to the improvement of the electric quality and stabilization of the power supply system.

  • The fossil fuel power consumption generates $CO_2$, which causes the problems such as global warming. Also, the increase in energy consumption has accelerated the depletion of the fossil fuels, and renewable energy is attracting attention. Among the renewable energies, the solar energy gets a lot of attention as the infinite clean energy source. But, the supply level of solar cell is insignificant due to high cost of generation of electric power in comparison with fossil fuels. Thus several researchers are recently doing the research on ultra-low-cost solar cells. Also, $Cu_2O$ is one of the applied materials as an absorption layer in ultra-low-cost solar cells. Cuprous oxide ($Cu_2O$) is highly desirable semiconductor oxide for use in solar energy conversion due to its direct band gap ($E_g={\sim}2.1eV$) and a high absorption coefficient that absorbs visible light of wavelengths up to 650 nm. In addition, $Cu_2O$ has several advantages such as non-toxicity, low cost and can be prepared with simple and cheap methods on large scale. In this work, we fabricated the $Cu_2O$ thin films by reactive sputtering method. The films were deposited with a Cu target with variable parameters such as substrate temperature, rf-power, and annealing condition. Finally, we confirmed the structural properties of thin films by XRD and SEM.

  • RPWM(Random Pulse Width Modulation) is a switching technique to spread the voltage and current harmonics on wide frequency area. Using randomly changed switching frequency of the inverter, the power spectrum of the electromagnetic acoustic noise can be spread into the wide-band area. And the wide-band noise is much more comfortable and less annoying than the narrow-band one. So RPWM have been attracting an interest as an excellent reduction method of acoustic noise on the inverter drive system. In this paper a new RPPWM(Random Position PWM) is proposed and implemented. Each of three pulses is located randomly in each switching intervals. Along with the randomization of PWM pulses, the space vector modulation is processed on the C167 microcontroller also. The experimental results show that the voltage and current harmonics were spread into wide band area and that the audible switching noise was reduced by proposed RPPWM method.

  • Biomass is material that is comprehensive of carbonaceous materials from plants, crops, animals, and algae. It has been used as one of heating fuel since the beginning the emergence of human beings. Since biomass is regarded as carbon-neutral energy source, it has recently been attracting attention as an energy source that can replace fossil fuels. The most widely applied field is distributed power generation, and a method of generating electric power by driving an internal combustion engine with syngas produced by gasifier is chosen. While the composition of the syngas produced in gasifiers changes depending on the air flowing into the reactor, commercialized gasifiers so far do not control the air flowing into the reactor. When the inner pressure in reactor increases, the air sucked into the reactor is reduced. That change of amount of air makes the composition of syngas varied. Those variations of composition of syngas cause the incomplete combustion hence the power output of engine drops, which is a critical weakness of the gasification technology. In this paper, to produce the uniformly composed syngas, PID control is applied. The result was shown when the amount of air into the reactor is supplied with the constant amount using PID control, the standard deviation of caloric values of syngas is around 2[%] of its average value. Meanwhile the gasifier without PID control has the standard deviation of caloric values is around 7[%]. Therefore, Adopting PID control to supply constant air to the gasifier is highly desirable.

  • Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are attracting wide attention due to their outstanding performance, extensive studies have been carried out for lead-based fast reactors (LFRs) that cooled with Lead or Lead-bismuth (LBE), and small modular natural circulation LFR is one of the promising candidates for SMRs and LFRs development. One of the challenges for the design small modular natural circulation LFR is to master the natural circulation thermal-hydraulic performance in the reactor primary circuit, while the natural circulation characteristics is a coupled thermal-hydraulic problem of the core thermal power, the primary loop layout and the operating state of secondary cooling system etc. Thus, accurate predicting the natural circulation LFRs thermal-hydraulic features are highly required for conducting reactor operating condition evaluate and Thermal hydraulic design optimization. In this study, a thermal-hydraulic analysis code is developed for small modular natural circulation LFRs, which is based on several mathematical models for natural circulation originally. A small modular natural circulation LBE cooled fast reactor named URANUS developed by Korea is chosen to assess the code's capability. Comparisons are performed to demonstrate the accuracy of the code by the calculation results of MARS, and the key thermal-hydraulic parameters agree fairly well with the MARS ones. As a typical application case, steady-state analyses were conducted to have an assessment of thermal-hydraulic behavior under nominal condition, and several parameters affecting natural circulation were evaluated. What's more, two characteristics parameters that used to analyze natural circulation LFRs natural circulation capacity were established. The analyses show that the core thermal power, thermal center difference and flow resistance is the main factors affecting the reactor natural circulation. Improving the core thermal power, increasing the thermal center difference and decreasing the flow resistance can significantly increase the reactor mass flow rate. Characteristics parameters can be used to quickly evaluate the natural circulation capacity of natural circulation LFR under normal operating conditions.

  • As a means to cope with the climate change crisis caused by global warming, automobile manufacturers continue to make efforts to use the driving energy of vehicles as electricity. As a result, parts industry such as battery, motor, and controller are attracting attention. China is often seen in large cities, with electric vehicles such as electric bicycles, electric motorcycles, and small electric vehicles popularized and commercialized, mainly in large cities. However, small electric vehicles are not popular in Korea, which is why the country's topography is high in hills. In order to drive the hilly domestic roads, power performance including vehicle climbing ability should be improved. In order to improve the power performance and the climbing capacity of small electric vehicles, the capacity of the motor should be increased. However, when the performance of the motor is improved, the weight of the motor becomes heavy and the price competitiveness is likely to decrease. In addition, in order to operate a high-performance motor, the power consumption of the battery is rapidly increased, so various problems must be solved. In order to commercialize a small electric vehicle for one or two people who do not emit harmful exhaust gas to the human body in a hilly domestic terrain, it is effective to have a separate transmission system. In this study, we were conducted dynamometer test to produce a continuously variable transmission(CVT) system prototype using a spring that can be applied to a small electric vehicle and to install a CVT system prototype manufactured in a small electric vehicle. The dynamometer test results showed that the maximum speed performance, acceleration performance, and climbing performance were improved.
