The purpose of this study was to investigate pre-service elementary teachers' attitudes towards science teaching using 'Dimensions of Attitude Toward the Teaching of Science (DAS)'. After confirming the factors and reliabilities of the translated questionnaire by pilot test (N=68), the survey was administered online at one national university of education in Korea (N=527). The pre-service teachers generally thought elementary science education is important and did not believe gender difference in students and in teachers. Science education majors than other majors, males than females, and those who completed high school science track than humanity track had more positive attitudes toward science teaching in elementary school. The extent of teacher education curriculum completion had a little effect on the pre-service teachers' attitudes toward science teaching. The implications for teacher education were discussed.

The student's attitude toward science is generally influenced by their teachers. Therefore, teachers' positive attitudes toward science and science teaching play an important role to change the student's attitude toward science. The purpose of this survey is to investigate the status on attitudes toward science and science teaching among the secondary school science teachers in Korea. The attitudes were surveyed by the questionnaire which was developed by Sung-Jae Pak. The instrument is designed to use Likert type scale and is composed of two kinds of scale: one is the attitudes toward science scale (the AT scale) and the other is the attitudes toward science teaching scale (the AT Kale), which contains 24 questions respectively. Each of them has 6 sub-level areas. The six areas of attitude toward science are as follow: The goals and values, process and method of science, knowledge and the view of nature, social and cultural aspects, scientist and a career in science, the preferences and willingness. The six areas of attitude toward science teaching are as follow: The goals and values, process and method of science teaching, the content and structure, social and cultural aspects, science educator and a career in science teaching, satisfaction and willingness. From 152 teachers' responses, the tendency of total as well as each area and the contrast of their backgrounds at the level of 5% significance were analyzed by SPSS computer program. Some results and conclusion of the study are as follow: 1. The overall attitude of the measured secondary school science teachers shows a positive trend tendency. Also total positive attitude toward science teaching are slightly higher than that of science, which support the fact that the teachers are not scientists but they are directly involved in teaching of science. 2. The attitudes toward science are moderately correlated to the attitudes toward science teaching (r=0.52). 3. The areas of knowledge, nature-view and tile area of social aspects of science show a very negative tendency. Also the two areas are not correlated to some other areal at the level at 5% significance. 4. Female science teachers exhibit just a little more positive attitudes than those of male teachers in science teaching. 5. The science teachers who wanted to have a profession of scholar or educator exhibit a little more positive attitudes than others in science and total attitudes (AS+AT). 6. The more the science teachers have "intellectual delights" the more their attitudes toward science and science teaching are positive. 7. At the level of 5% significance, there are differences which college they graduated from, but there are no differences in multiple comparison at 10% level. 8. The differences in their background dose not appear in such as age; teaching career; academic career; deny the superstition; their onlook for the scientist or educator when they were freshmen; major the basic science; opinions about the U.F.O. and the origin of life. 9. The responses of certain individual statement are quite different from the overall tendencies, which strongly suggest the de1ailed analysis and deeper study. For the continuing study, it is recommendable to revile the measuring tools with the theoretical study for the better validity and reliability, and investigate the status of the attitudes toward science and science teaching among the science teachers with sufficient samples.
This study aimed to investigate a perception of teachers engaged in special education for scientifically gifted regarding nature of science and identify attitudes toward teaching nature of science. The sample of this study consists of 122 science teachers who are teaching or taught students attending gifted classes of any primary school in Korea and any gifted education center of every District Office of Education. We made a partial amendment of a VOSE that was developed by Chen(2006) and then used. We tested their perception and attitudes in regard to nature of science. In terms of nature of science, we devide it into 7 sub-areas to analyse. For attitudes toward teaching nature of science, we investigate and analyse following 5 sub-areas; tentativeness of scientific knowledge, nature of observation, scientific methods, theories and laws and subjectivity and objectivity. The result showed that the generally teachers have a desirable recognitions about a nature of science. For attitudes toward teaching nature of science, the teachers showed that they have positive attitudes. However between degrees of teachers' recognition about a nature of science and attitudes toward teaching nature of science showed a low correlation. To increase their understanding of nature of science and develop attitudes toward teaching nature of science, there should be more training time for the teachers and training contents also should be changed. In addition, we hope that this study contribute to develop contents and direction of training for the teachers as a basic reference.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among elementary school teachers' high school and college backgrounds in science, their attitudes toward teaching science, their science teaching efficacy beliefs, and their instructional strategies. Both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, were utilized in this study. This paper, however, presents only the results of the quantitative data analysis while expecting to report the qualitative data analysis outcomes afterwards. Four instruments were used to ascertain information concerning teachers' backgrounds in science(the number of high school science courses they took and the grades of courses, the number of college science courses and grades, the number of college science methods courses and grades), attitudes toward teaching science, science teaching self-efficacy beliefs(personal science teaching efficacy and science teaching outcome expectancy), and their instructional strategies(indirect, direct, and mixed methods). A sample of 340 practicing elementary school teachers participated in this study. To determine statistically significant results, Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to relate teachers' backgrounds in science, attitudes toward teaching science, science teaching self-efficacy beliefs and their instructional strategies. The correlation coefficients were statistically significant regarding four variables, teachers' backgrounds in science, attitudes toward teaching science, science teaching self-efficacy beliefs, and instructional strategies investigated in this study. These results can be interpreted that programs of teacher preparations and trainings which include science and science methods courses should help prospective and practicing teachers change in their attitudes and beliefs toward science teaching. It is expected that future studies concerning teachers' attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors toward teaching science can help to improve science teacher education in Korea.

It is common that whoever is having a very low achievement level in mathematics has a poor attitude toward mathematics. However, it is totally opposite when we look at the case of Korean students. On several studies on international comparisons in mathematics and science achievement, Korean students recorded a top ranks among the nations. However, their attitudes toward mathematics are very poor; almost at the bottom in international assessment among other countries compared to international peers. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between students' attitudes toward mathematics and teaching methods and to analyze findings of research articles published within the last 15 years. These findings will contribute not only to understanding a relationship between students' attitudes toward mathematics and teaching methods, but to provide guidelines for how students' attitudes toward mathematics can be improved.

In this study, a learning-teaching model enhancing the students to ask questions was developed and the influence of its application to the lesson of 'Chemical Change and Elements' of the 8th grade was investigated. This learning-teaching model was constructed initially by completing the work-sheet to activate student's question-asking, then by writing down their questions or uncertainties in the class, and finally with the feedback of student's question to the individual and to the class. Treatment and control groups (2 classes each) were selected from a girls' middle school in Seoul. and taught for 12 class hours during 4 weeks for this study. Before instruction, the test of attitudes toward science lessons and the test of adoption of scientific attitudes were administered, and the science scores of the previous course were obtained for the covariate. After instruction, the conception test. the achievement test, the test of attitudes toward science lessons, and the test of adoption of scientific attitudes were administered. The TOSRA (Test of Science-Related Attitudes) was used both for the test of attitudes toward science lessons and for the test of adoption of scientific attitudes. The study revealed that the treatment group showed significant differences from the control group in the scores of the conception test (p<.01) and of the achievement test (p<.05). But in attitudes toward science lessons and adoption of scientific attitudes. there were not significant differences between the two groups, even though the scores of the treatment group were a little higher than those of the control group. Educational implications of the effect of science teaching on the questioning activity of students are also discussed.

The CAI (Computer-Assisted Instruction) system for science teaching has been increasing both in quantity and in quality during the last two decades. However, science learning by computer has not played a leading role in the science teaching process. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of tutorial CAI programs according to the learner's characteristics such as sex, inquiry skills, attitudes toward science subject, logical thinking skills, achievement motivation, science content achievement in science teaching. One group pretest-posttest design was used as an experimental design. The three tutorial science CAI programs were used for thirty males and females selected in grade eight. According to the analysis of CAI achievement scores the female students showed significantly higher (P<0.05) than the male students. Also, one-way analysis of variance was used to investigate the effects of interaction between sex and achievement motivation. The significant difference on the effects of interaction between sex and achievement motivation has not found. The effects of tutorial CAI between logical thinking skills, attitudes toward science subject, inquiry skills, achievement motivation, science content achievement according to upper and lower levels were investigated by using the statistical analysis of one-way ANOVA. The results indicate that tutorial CAI might provides a good opportunities for the improvement of science achievement to the lower level students of attitudes toward science subject, inquiry skills, science content achievement.
Large Midwest university faculty members proposed the Science and Technology Enhancement Program Project (STEP) to improve students' learning in the secondary mathematics classroom using modules of inquiry-based teaching. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the STEP Project on students' attitude toward mathematics. Hierarchical linear models (HLM) were used to evaluate the impact of the STEP Project. The sample group for the study was 130 ninth grade students enrolled in Integrated Algebra I in a large urban school district. The school was one of eight secondary schools that participated in the STEP Project. The classes in the treatment group were three of five classes ordered in terms of the highest, middle, and lowest mean GPA. The control group consisted of two other middle GPA classes. The classes had an average of 25 students. Teachers who previously had been involved in the STEP Project taught all treatment and control classes. The inquiry-based teaching activities provided by the project were confined to the treatment classes. The survey measuring students' attitudes toward mathematics were obtained for both groups of students. The inquiry-based teaching affected students' attitudes toward mathematics (p < 0.07, ES = 3.07). Especially, students who had preexisting low attitudes toward mathematics were significantly affected by treatment (p < 0.02, ES = 0.02), while the treatment positively affected African American students overall at p < 0.08 (ES = 0.58).

This study plans to develop strategies using children's verse in science education and investigate the effects of instruction using children's verses on the attitude toward science. The study tried to determine strategies using children's science verse in order to find out their value. For the purpose of this, two classes of the 6th grade were selected in an elementary school for tests. The results from this research showed that strategies using children's verse in science education were developed and applied in teaching/learning purposes as well as in the area of literature. A strategy for remembering was applied widely. A strategy for understanding scientific principles and for quest methods, writing children's science verses directly helped in scientific conceptual formation. Instruction using children's science verses had a positive effect on the attitudes toward science. Students maintained positive attitudes throughout instruction that used children's science verses. In conclusion, instruction using children's science verses can be applied to science education, and the attitudes toward science and learning achievements can be improved.
The purpose of this study is to further develop the strategies using science magic and investigate the their effects of the instruction on the student's attitude toward science. To do this, a main idea was selected and stages for science teaching methods were developed. Two classes of the 4th grade were selected and instructed. After implementing and using the teaching method, a test and survey were administered to examine the perception of the students and the learning effects of the new science teaching. The results of this study were as follows. First, the strategy for using science magic was developed and applied. For learners, doing science magic was more effective on their own in terms of boosting student's understanding and interest. Also the teacher's modeling was better in terms of presenting the contents. Second, the students' reaction and perception on using the science magic in classes were positive. In the classroom setting, science magic helped the learners understand better and made the learning environment fun. Third, instruction using science magic had a positive effect on student's attitude toward science. Students felt curiosity about science magic. It made them participate better in studying the activity as well. In conclusion, instruction using science magic can be applied to science to education, and the attitudes toward science and learning achievements can be improved.
