Comparison of Supersonic Jet Characteristics between Hydrogen and Helium injected by Small-cone-angle Pintle-type Hydrogen Injector (수소 및 헬륨을 이용한 작은 원추각 핀틀형 수소인젝터의 초음속 제트 특성 비교)

  • Understanding the fundamental characteristics of supersonic hydrogen jets is important for the optimization of combustion in hydrogen engines. Previous studies have used helium as a surrogate gas to characterize the hydrogen jet characteristics due to potential explosion risks of hydrogen. It was based on the similarity of hydrogen and helium jet structures in supersonic conditions that has been confirmed using hole-type injectors and large-cone-angle pintle-type injectors. However, the validity of using helium as a surrogate gas has not been examined for recent small-cone-angle pintle-type injectors applied to direct-injection hydrogen engines, which form a supersonic hollow cone near the nozzle and experience the jet collapse downstream. Differences in the physical properties of hydrogen and helium could alter the jet development characteristics that need to be investigated and understood. This study compares supersonic jet structures of hydrogen and helium injected by a small-cone-angle (50°) pintle-type hydrogen injector and discusses their differences and related mechanisms. Jet penetration length and dispersion angle are measured using the Schlieren imaging method under engine-like injection conditions. As a result, the penetration length of hydrogen and helium jets showed a slight difference of less than 5%, and the dispersion angle showed a maximum of 10% difference according to the injection condition.

Residue Levels of Pesticides in Post-Harvest Treated Import Fruits During Storage (수입 과일에 살포된 수확 후 처리농약(Post-harvest pesticide)의 경시적 변화)

  • The post-harvest concentration change of four kind of pesticides, captan, chlorpyrifos, methidathion and kresoxim-methyl was investigated with the storage period for the import fruit. Then the post-harvest concentration was set to 1000, 250, 400 and 157 $mgkg^{-1}$ for captan, chlorpyrifos, methidathion and kresoxim-methyl respectively. In case of captan, 0.9-12.5 $mgkg^{-1}$ in total fruit base and ND-0.23 $mgkg^{-1}$ in the sarcocarp were measured after atomization and 0.7-3.2 $mgkg^{-1}$ in total fruit base and ND-0.67 $mgkg^{-1}$ in the sarcocarp were measured after four week. For chlopyrifos, menthidathion, and kresoxim-methyl 0.4-2.2, 0.7-3.1 and 1.3-2.1 $mgkg^{-1}$ in total fruit base and ND-0.32, ND-0.05 and ND-0.16 $mgkg^{-1}$ in the sarcocarp were measured after atomization respectively. After four week 0.3-0.9, 0.4-2.0 and 1.3-1.8 $mgkg^{-1}$ in total fruit base and ND-0.02, ND-0.05 and ND-0.15 $mgkg^{-1}$ in the sarcocarp were investigated for other three pesticides. The concentration decreasing ratio of pesticides was largest for captan, 52% and other components were in order of chlopyrifos, menthidathion, and kresoxim-methy, 47, 41, 11% each other.

Design and Experimental Verification of Uni-Injector Using Gas Methane and Lox as Propellants (가스메탄/액체산소를 추진제로 하는 단일 인젝터 설계 및 실험적 검증)

  • An injector that uses methane gas ($CH_4$) and liquid oxygen ($LO_x$) as propellants was designed to verify the combustion characteristics of an engine that uses methane, which is one of the next-generation propellants. A swirl/shear coaxial-type injector was used, and flow analysis was performed using Fluent to determine the main design parameters of the injector. A hydraulic test was performed to understand the atomization and spray pattern characteristics of the injector. Next, a combustion test was performed at the design point to understand the ignition and combustion stability. Additional combustion tests were performed according to the O/F ratio to investigate the combustion characteristics and stabilities using the characteristic exhaust velocity ($C^*$) and fluctuation of the chamber pressure. The experimental results showed that the combustion efficiency was greater than 90%, and the pressure fluctuation was lower than 2% under all conditions.

Clean Flotation Process to Recycle useful Materials from Fly Ash (비산재로부터 유용성분을 회수하는 청정부유선별공정)

  • All coal ash, generated from coal-fired power plants, is entirely dumped onto a landfill site. As coal ash contains 80% fly ash, a clean floating process was developed in this study to recover useful components from coal ash and to use them as high value-added industrial materials. When the unburned carbon (UC) was recovered from the fly ash, soybean oil, an eco-friendly vegetable oil, was used as collector instead of a non-ionic kerosene collector to prevent the occurrence of odor from the kerosene. After the UC was separated by flotation, particulate ceramic microsphere (CM) was recovered, without generating acidic wastewater, through hydro-cyclone instead of sulfuric acid solution in order to separate ceramic microsphere (CM) and cleaned ash (CA) from the residue. By utilizing soybean oil as a collector, the recovery rate of UC turned high at 85.8% due to the increased adsorption of UC, the high viscosity of soybean oil, and the increase in floating properties caused by the linoleic acid contained in soybean oil. All of the combustible components contained in the recovered UC were carbon components, with the carbon content registering high when soybean oil was used. The recovered UC had many pores with a rough surface; thus, it could be easily ground and then used as an industrial material for its fine particles. The CM and CA recovered by the clean separation process using hydro-cyclone had a spherical shape, and the particles were clearly separated without clumping together. The average diameter (D50) of the particles was 5 ㎛, so it was possible to realize the atomization of CM through a process change.

Performance Evaluation of 1 N Class HAN/Methanol Propellant Thruster (HAN/메탄올 추진제를 사용하는 1 N급 추력기 성능 평가)

  • The HAN which is an ionic liquid is a non-toxic monopropellant with high storability, and its specific impulse can be increased by blending methanol, thereby it can substitute the hydrazine. The HAN was synthesized by acid-base reaction of hydroxylamine and nitric acid, and the blending ratio of HAN and methanol is 8.2:1. The iridium catalyst was used to decompose the HAN, and 1 N class thruster with shower head type injector having one orifice was used to evaluate the HAN/Methanol propellant. The thermal stability of distributor was increased by using ceramic material to endure the high temperature of product gas. The preheating temperature of catalyst should be $400^{\circ}C$ at least for the complete decomposition. The feeding pressure should be increased to increase the $C^*$ efficiency, thereby the decomposition performance was decreased upstream catalyst, and the performance of thruster was decreased. The fine metal mesh was inserted after the injector to improve the atomization of propellant, thereby it can settle the performance decrease problem. The phenomenon of performance decrease was remarkably improved owing to the insertion of fine metal mesh.

The Properties of Underwater-Hardening Epoxy Mortar Used the Rapidly Cooled Steel Slag (RCSS) (급냉 제강슬래그를 사용한 수중 경화형 에폭시 모르타르의 특성)

  • Although blast furnace slag has been widely used in concrete as a cementitious admixture or aggregate for many years, the slowly cooled steel slag is not used in concrete but mainly in road. Its use in concrete operates problem such as the lack of volume stability due to high free CaO content, which can be potentially hazardous in concrete. However, the rapidly cooled steel slag by atomization has a low free CaO content, a high density, and a spherical shape, so it is expected to use in concrete so much. This paper is to understand the probability that the rapid cooled steel slag can replace the silica sand used as aggregate in the epoxy mortar. We did the experimental study on the properties of the epoxy mortar having various replacement proportion of rapidly cooled steel slag. This study shown that increasing content of the rapidly cooled steel slag in epoxy mortar lead to increase largely the passing time of nozzle by O-lot, compressive strength and flexural strength. However except the flow is almost same level. So we understand that the rapidly cooled steel slag has positive effect on increasing of properties in epoxy mortar.

Study on the Spray Control of Mixed Fuel Using Flash Boiling (감압비등을 이용한 혼합연료의 분무제어에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to assess the spray control of flash boiling with mixed fuel in consideration of HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) engine condition. Mixed fuel existing in two phase regions can control the process of mixture formation under low temperature and density by using the spray resulting from flash boiling which is able to induce rapid evaporation of fuel spray as well as the evaporation of high boiling point component. Because HCCI engine injects the fuel early under ambient conditions, it can facilitate the chemical control of ignition combustion and physical control such as breakup and atomization of liquid fuel by flash boiling of mixed fuel which consists of highly ignitable light oil and highly volatile gasoline. This study was conducted by performing video processing after selected composition and molar fraction of the mixed fuel as major parameters and photographed Schlieren image and Mie scattered light corresponding to the flash boiling phenomenon of the fuel spray that was injected inside a constant volume vessel. It was found that flash boiling causes significant changes in the spray structure under relatively low temperature and density. Thus, we analyzed that the flash boiling spray can be used for HCCI combustion by controlling the mixture formation at the early fuel injection timing.

The Influence of Extrusion Ratio on Microstructure and Thermoelectric Properties of Rapidly Solidified N-type $Bi_2Te_{2.75}Se_{0.15}$ (급속응고된 N-type $Bi_2Te_{2.75}Se_{0.15}$ 열전재료의 미세조직과 열전특성에 미치는 압출비의 영향)

  • $Bi_2Te_3$계 열전재료는 200~400K 정도의 저온에서 네어지 변환효율이 가장 높은 재료로써 열전냉각, 바런재로 등에 응요하기 위하여ㅠ 제조법 및 특서에 관한 많은 연구가 진행되어 왔다. $Bi_2Te_3$계 화합물은 rhombohedral의 결정 구조를 가지는 층상 화 ;물로 결정대칭성으로 인해 연전기적으로 큰 이방성을 나타낸다. 현재는 일반향용고법에 의해서 입자를 a축 방향으로 성장시켜 큰 결정립을 가진 다결정재료를 사용하고 있으나, c면이 매우 취약하기 때문에 가공서이 나쁘다. 따라서 이와같은 단점을 개선하기 위하여 기계적 강도를 높일 수 있는 가공공정 및 합금설계에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 측히 열간 압출법으로 제조된 열전재료는 결정립의 미세화와 높은 이방성으로 성능지수와 기계적 강도를 향상시킬 수 있다는 연구결과가 보고되고 있다 또한 Schultz드의 연구결과에 의하면 $Bi_2Te_3$ 계 열전재료는 소성변형에 의하여 발생한 점결함에 의하여 캐리어 농도가 변화되며 이로 인하여 재료의 전기적 성질이 결정된다고 하였다. 따라서 상당히 큰 소성가공량과 열전측성과의 관계를 규명하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 압출변수 중 소성가공량에 중요한 변수로 작요아는 압출비를 변화시켜 최적의 열간 소성가공량을 검토하고, 이에 따른 열전측성과 압출비와의 상관관계에 대하여 연구하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 연구에 사용된 N형의 조성은$Bi_2Te_{2.75}Se_{0.15}$로서 순도 99.99를 사용하였고, dopant로 0.1wt%의 $SbI_3$를 사용하였다. $Bi_2Te_{2.75}Se_{0.15}$ 분말은 가스분사법(Gas atomization Process)를 이용하여, 용탕제조시 아르곤가스로 산화를 방지하였고, 냉매로는 질소가스를 이용하였다. 제조된 분말을 기ㅖ적 분급법을 이용하여 분급하였고, 냉매로는 질소가스를 이용하였다. 제조된 분말을 기계적 분급ㅂ법을 이용하여 분급하였고, 압출에 이용된 분말은 250$\mu\textrm{m}$이하의 크기를 사용하였다. 또한 분말제조과정 중 형성되는 표면산화층을 제거하기 위하여 36$0^{\circ}C$에서 4시간동안 수소 환원처리를 행하였다. 제조된 분말은 열간 압출을 위하여 Aㅣcan에 넣고 냉간성형체를 만들고, 진공처리를 한 후 밀봉하여 탈가스처리를 하였다. 압출다이는 압출비가 각각 28:1과 16:1인 평다이(9$0^{\circ}C$)를 사용하여 각각 내경이 9, 12cm이고, 길이가 50, 30cm인 압출재를 제조하였다. 열간압출한 후의 미세조직을 광학현미경으로 압출방향에 평행한 방향과 수직방향으로 관찰하였고, 열간 압출재 이방성을 검토하기 위하여 X선 회절분석을 실실하여 결정방위를 확인하였다. 전기 비저항 및 Seebeck 계수 측정을 위하여 각각 2$\times$2$\times$10$mm^3$ 그리고 5$\times$5$\times$10$mm^3$ 크기의 시편을 준비하였다.준비하였다.

Hot Fire Tests of the KSR-III Sub.(I) Engines (KSR-III 축소형(I) 엔진의 연소 시험)

  • In the preceding tests using the KSR-III Sub.(I) engines, it was observed that the heat resistant capability of the engines was not enough for the mission. So Sub.(I) Mod. engines were designed and tested. The Sub.(I) Mod. engines have three major design parameters - the arrangement of main injectors, the impinging angle of main injectors and thermal barrier coating. More than twenty experiments were carried on to evaluate engine performance and heat resistance capability with respect to design parameters. In this study, the test results are introduced. Analysing the result of Sub.(I) engine tests, it is found that decreasing the impinging angle, adopting the H-type arrangement(rather than radial type arrangement) and adopting the thermal barrier coating can increase heat resistance capacity substantially. Also, engine performance evaluation is conducted using specific impulse and characteristic velocity parameter. The results show that the performance variation is small(about 5%) and the performance is better in the case of radial arrangement. It is suspected that these phenomena are caused by the change of flame structure atomization mixing characteristic of sprays and the distortion of recirculation zone. Also from the low frequency instability point of view, it is observed that reducing the impinging angle and adopting the H type arrangement can increase the instability characteristics.

Study on the Combustion Characteristics of a Small-Scale Orimulsion Boiler (소형 오리멀젼 보일러의 연소특성 연구)

  • In order to examine the application feasibility of Orimulsion fuel in a commercial boiler using heavy fuel oil, a numerical and experimental research efforts have been made especially to figure out the fundamental combustion characteristics of this fuel in a small-scale boiler. One of the notable combustion features of Orimulsion fuel is the delayed appearance of flame location with the flame shape of rather broad distribution, which is found experimentally and confirmed by numerical calculation. This kind of flame characteristics is considered due to the high moisture content included inherently in the process of Orimulsion manufacture together with micro-explosion by the existence of fine water droplets. In order to investigate the effect on the combustion characteristics of Orimulsion, a series of parametric investigation have been made in terms of important design and operational variables such as injected amount of fuel, types of atomization fluid, and phonemenological radiation model employed in the calculation, etc. The delayed feature of peak flame can be alleviated by the adjustment of the flow rate of injected fuel and the generating features of CO, $SO_2$ and NO gases are also evaluated in the boiler. When the steam injection as atomizing fluid is used, the combustion process is stabilized with the reduced region of high flame temperature. In general, the calculation results are physically acceptable and consistent but some refinements of phenomenological models are necessary for the better resolution of pollutant formation. From the results of this small-scale Orimulsion boiler, it is believed that a number of useful information are obtained with the working computer program for the near future application of Orimulsion fuel to a conventional boiler.
