During the decades after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS) accident, ambient dose rates have markedly decreased when compared to those at the early state of the accident. Government projects have been continuously conducted by surveying the ambient dose rate and radiocesium distributions. Airborne surveys using crewed helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are the best methods for obtaining an overall picture of the distribution. However, ground-based surveys are required for accurate measurements near the population. The differences between these methods include the knowledge of the post depositional behavior of radionuclides in land use. The survey results form the basis for policy decisions such as lifting evacuation zones, decontamination, and other countermeasures. These surveys contain crucial findings regarding post-accident responses. This paper reviews the survey methods of government projects and current situation around the FDNPS. The visualization methods and databases of ambient dose rates are also reviewed to provide information to the population.
The initial condition of a core transient should be consistent with real core state for the simulation of the core tansient. The initial xenon distribution, which can not be measured in the core, has a significant effect on the transient with xenon dynamics. In the simulation of the transient starting from non-equilibrium xenon state, the accurate initialization of the non-equilibrium xenon distribution is essential for the prediction of the core transient behavior. In this study, a xenon initialization method to predict the core transient more accurately was developed through the equivalent pre-xenon-oscillation which represents the tenon oscillation before the transient and verified by the application of the simulation for a startup test of Yonggwang Unit 3.
Continuous monitoring of radioactive substances over a prolonged duration can yield crucial insights into the levels of radiation exposure through inhalation, both in the vicinity of nuclear facilities and/or general environments. In this study, we evaluated long-term measurements (2012-2022) of gross alpha-beta activities in the air in the vicinity of nuclear facilities and reference site, distribution characteristics of temporal trends and spatial fluctuations, and factors affecting radioactivity levels. The average airborne gross-α (in mBq m-3) for onsite and off-site were 0.124 and 0.117, respectively, and the average airborne gross-β (in mBq m-3) measurements were 1.10 and 1.04, respectively. The activity ratio (AR) of gross-α and gross-β were calculated as a ratio of 0.12. The distribution characteristics of gross-α and gross-β activities in this study area are likely influenced by the meteorological factors and variations in airborne PM concentrations rather than the operation of the nuclear facility.

To carry out safe and rapid decontamination in radiological accident areas, acquisition of various information on radiation sources is needed. In particular, to figure out the location and distribution of radiation sources is essential for rapid follow-up and removal of contaminants as well as minimizing worker damage. The radiation distribution detection device is used to obtain the position and distribution information of the radiation source. In the case of a radiation distribution detection device, a detection sensor unit is generally composed of a single sensor, and the detection range is limited due to the physical characteristics of the single sensor. We applied a calibration detector for controlling the detection sensitivity of a single sensor for radiation detection and improved the limited detection range of radiation dose rate. Also, gamma irradiation test confirmed the improvement of radiation distribution detection range.

The Core Operating Limit Supervisory System (COLSS) is digital computer based on-line monitoring system that is designed to assist the operator in monitoring of the Limiting Conditions for Operation. A current COLSS calculates axial power distribution based on in-core detector signals using 5th order Fourier series method. It was found that the 5th elder Fourier series method was not accurate for certain axial power shapes, especially saddle power shapes, resulting in thermal margin decrease. A cubic spline synthesis was applied to the COLSS in order to improve the axial power distribution monitoring for the various axial power shapes. The results showed that the cubic spline synthesis simulated more accurately the axial power shapes, up to 5% in RMS errors, compared to those of the Fourier series.

This paper presentss flux-to-dose conversion factors for neutrons and gamma-rays based on the concept of the maximum absorbed dose. Neutron flux-to-does-rate conversion factors for energies from 2.5$\times$10$^{-8}$ to 20 MeV are presented while the conversion factors for gamma-rays are given in the energy range of 0.01 to 15MeV. Flux-to-does-rate conversion factors, which were calculated under the assumption that the radiation energy distribution has nonlinearity in phantom, are different from those values obtained by monoenergetic radiation. Especially, these values obtained here were determined for the cross section libray such as DLC-23, DLC-27, and DLC-31. The flux-to-dose-rate conversion factors obtained in this work are in a good agreement with the values presented by American National Standard Institute (ANSI) N666. These results are used to calculate the dose rate distribution of neutron and gamma-ray in any radiation fields, and will be useful for the radiation shielding analysis, radiation protection and radiation dosimetry concerned with problems of continuous energy distribution.
A subchannel analysis code MATRA applicable to PWRs and ALWRs has been developed to be run on an IBM PC or HP WS based on the existing CDC CYBER mainframe version of COBRA-Rf-1. This MATRA code is a thermal-hydraulic analysis code based on the subchannel approach for calculating the enthalpy and How distribution in fuel assemblies and reactor cores for both steady-state and transient conditions. HATRA has been provided with an improved structure, various functions, and models to give more convenient user environment and to enhance the code accuracy. Among them, the pressure drop model has been improved to be applied to non-square-lattice rod arrays, and the models for the lateral transport between adjacent subchannels have been improved to enhance the accuracy in predicting two-phase flow phenomena. The predictions of MATRA were compared with the experimental data on the flow and enthalpy distribution in some sample rod-bundle cases to evaluate the performance of MATRA. All the results revealed that the predictions of MATRA were better than those of COBRA-IV-I.
As part of a fundamental study on the volume reduction of contaminated concrete wastes, the separation characteristics of the aggregates and the distribution of the radioactivity in the aggregates were investigated. Radioisotope $^{60}Co$ was artificially used as a model contaminant for non-radioactive crushed concrete waste. Volume reduction for radioactively contaminated dismantled concrete wastes was carried out using activated heavy weight concrete taken from the Korea Research Reactor 2 (KRR-2) and light weight concrete from the Uranium Conversion Plant (UCP). The results showed that most of the $^{60}Co$ nuclide was easily separated from the contaminated dismantled concrete waste and was concentrated mainly in the porous fine cement paste. The heating temperature was found to be one of the effective parameters in the removal of the radionuclide from concrete waste. The volume reduction rate achieved was above 80% for the KRR-2 concrete wastes and above 75% for the UCP concrete wastes by thermal and mechanical treatment.

In this study, extraction of uranium(VI) from an aqueous nitric acid solution was investigated using tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) as an extractant in an ionic liquid, 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Cnmim][Tf2N]). The distribution ratio of U(VI) in 1.1 M TBP/[Cnmim][Tf2N] was significantly high when the concentration of nitric acid was low. The value of the distribution ratio decreased as the concentration of the nitric acid increased at lower acidities, and then increased with a nitric acid concentration of up to 8 M. This can be attributed to the different extraction mechanisms of U(VI) based on nitric acid concentrations. Thus, a cation exchange at low acidity levels and an ion-pair extraction at high acidity levels were suggested as the extraction mechanism of U(VI) in the TBP/[Cnmim][Tf2N] system.
The concentration of Cs-137 and Sr-90 has been analyzed in soils around Taejon region. A correalation was found between the concentration of Cs-137 and the organic matter content. The mean value of Cs-137 was 14.37Bq/kg-dry and that of Sr-90 was 7.95Bq/kg-dry in undisturbed soils around Taejon region. The concentration ratio of Cs-137/Sr-90 was 1.99. The distribution of Cs-137 and Sr-90 was similar to cumulative fallout level and had been more affected by nuclear weapons test than by the chernobyl accident.
