Particle Size Distribution of Suspended Particulates in the Atmosphere of a Seoul Residential Area (한 도시 분진의 유해성 입도 분포에 대한 조사 연구)

  • The particle size of suspended particulates was measured by a Anderson air sampler from Mar. 1982 to Feb. 1984 in a part of Seoul. It was concluded as follows : 1) The arithmetic concentration of suspended particulates was $147.8{\mu}g/m^3$ in Spring, 136.9 in Summer, 131.9 in Autumn and 158.1 in Winter respectively. 2) The cumulative distribution of suspended particulates size in logarithmic diagram showed similar to normal log distribution. 3) The atmospheric particulate matters showed a bimodal size distribution on the base of unit particle concentrations, which divided at approximately $2{\mu}m$ in the diameter. 4) While the fine particulates less than $2.1{\mu}m\;was\;35.4{\sim}45.0%$, the coarse particulates was $55.0{\sim}64.5%$. 5) The higher the concentration of suspended particulates, the more increased the ratio of fine particulates. The higher the concentration of suspended particulates, the lower median size of suspended particulate as well. 6) The respirable dust particulates less than $4.7{\mu}m\;was\;52.2{\sim}62.9%$ in seasonal average through the 2 year samples. With the above result, air pollution concerned with public health could be evaluated and the control measures also are suggested.

Comparative Analysis of the CALPUFF and AERMOD Atmospheric Dispersion Models for Ready-Mixed Concrete Manufacturing Facilities Generating Particulate Matter (미세먼지 발생 레미콘시설에서의 대기확산모델 CALPUFF와 AERMOD 비교 분석)

  • Objectives: Using atmospheric dispersion representative models (AERMOD and CALPUFF), the emissions characteristics of each model were compared and analyzed in ready-mixed concrete manufacturing facilities that generate a large amount of particulate matter (PM-10, PM-2.5). Methods: The target facilities were the ready-mixed concrete manufacturing facilities (Siheung RMC, Goyang RMC, Ganggin RMC) and modeling for each facility was performed by dividing it into construction and operation times. The predicted points for each target facility were selected as 8-12ea (Siheung RMC 10, Goyang RMC 8, and Gangjin RMC 12ea) based on an area within a two-kilometer radius of each project district. The terrain input data was SRTM-3 (January-December 2019). The meteorological input data was divided into surface weather and upper layer weather data, and weather data near the same facility as the target facility was used. The predicted results were presented as a 24-hour average concentration and an annual average concentration. Results: First, overall, CALPUFF showed a tendency to predict higher concentrations than AERMOD. Second, there was almost no difference in the concentration between the two models in non-complex terrain such as in mountainous areas, but in complex terrain, CALPUFF predicted higher concentrations than AERMOD. This is believed to be because CALPUFF better reflected topographic characteristics. Third, both CALPUFF and AERMOD predicted lower concentrations during operation (85.2-99.7%) than during construction, and annual average concentrations (76.4-99.9%) lower than those at 24 hours. Fourth, in the ready-mixed concrete manufacturing facility, PM-10 concentration (about 40 ㎍/m3) was predicted to be higher than PM-2.5 (about 24 ㎍/m3). Conclusions: In complex terrain such as mountainous areas, CALPUFF predicted higher concentrations than AERMOD, which is thought to be because CALPUFF better reflected topographic characteristics. In the future, it is recommended that CALPUFF be used in complex terrain and AERMOD be used in other areas to save modeling time. In a ready-mixed concrete facility, PM-10, which has a relatively large particle size, is generated more than PM-2.5 due to the raw materials used and manufacturing characteristics.

Characteristics of Air Stagnation over the Korean Peninsula and Projection Using Regional Climate Model of HadGEM3-RA (한반도 대기정체의 특성 및 지역기후모델 HadGEM3-RA를 이용한 미래 전망)

  • Not only emissions, but also atmospheric circulation is a key factor that affects local particulate matters (PM) concentrations in Korea through ventilation effects and transboundary transports. As part of the atmospheric circulation, air stagnation especially adversely affects local air quality due to weak ventilation. This study investigates the large-scale circulation related to air stagnation over Korea during winter and projects the climate change impacts on atmospheric patterns, using observed PM data, reanalysis and regional climate projections from HadGEM3-RA with Modified Korea Particulate matter Index. Results show that the stagnation affects the PM concentration, accompanied by pressure ridge at upper troposphere and weaken zonal pressure gradient at lower troposphere. Downscaling using HadGEM3-RA is found to yield Added-Value in the simulated low tropospheric winds. For projection of future stagnation, SSP5-8.5 and SSP1-2.6 (high and low emission) scenarios are used here. It has been found that the stagnation condition occurs more frequently by 11% under SSP5-8.5 and by 5% under SSP1-2.6 than in present-day climate and is most affected by changes in surface wind speed. The increase in the stagnation conditions is related to anticyclonic circulation anomaly at upper troposphere and weaken meridional pressure gradient at lower troposphere. Considering that the present East Asian winter monsoon is mainly affected by change in zonal pressure gradient, it is worth paying attention to this change in the meridional gradient. Our results suggest that future warming condition increase the frequency of air stagnation over Korea during winter with response of atmospheric circulation and its nonlinearity.

The Study on Changes of Exhaust Efficiency and Fine Particle Concentration at a Ventilation Opening by a Air Curtain Flow in a Subway Model Tunnel (지하철 모사터널에서 에어커튼을 이용한 환기구의 배기효율 및 미세입자 농도 변화 연구)

  • In this study, a new tunnel ventilation method with a high velocity air curtain flow has been investigated for improving the ventilation exhaust efficiency and removing air pollutants in subway tunnels. At upper or lower position right downstream of a main duct connected with a ventilation opening, air curtain flows were suppled into the main duct where the air flow velocity was in the range of 2~6 m/s. Exhaust efficiency was monitored for both cases with and without air curtain flow for different air velocities, locations and injection angles of the air curtain. Particulate matter concentrations (PM10, PM2.5 and PM1.0) were also checked at both the main duct and ventilation opening before and after supplying air curtain flows. Lower air velocity of the main duct flow, higher air velocity of the air curtain led to higher exhaust efficiency and the air curtain condition of 30..inclined injection toward the main flow showed the maximum exhaust efficiency. The exhaust efficiency of about 24% without the air curtain could be improved to about 34% after using the air curtain flow. PM concentration decreased at the main duct and increased at the ventilation opening after using the air curtain flow. Therefore, the suggested method to use air curtain flows in tunnels will be probably one of the promising tools to reduce air pollutants in subway tunnels.

Artificial and Biological Particles in the Springtime Atmosphere

  • This study focused on a comprehensive and detailed interpretation for the springtime air quality influenced by both artificial (particulate matter (PM) and asbestos) and biological (pollen) sources in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. An intensive measurement of PM was conducted at four characteristic sites (i.e., a heavy traffic area, a residential area, an industrial area, and a desolate area) in the Fukuoka Prefecture during spring of 2007. Analysis of major ionic species in $PM_{2.5}$ was performed by an Ion Chromatography, and asbestos and pollen were identified by Scanning Electron Microscopy with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX). $PM_{2.5}$ concentration ($65.3{\mu}gm^{-3}$) measured in an industrial area (site C) was extraordinarily high compared to those monitored in other areas; it greatly exceeded the Japan's $PM_{2.5}$ criteria (a daily average of $35{\mu}gm^{-3}$). NOAA's HYSPLIT dispersion model suggests that this high level of $PM_{2.5}$ monitored at site C is unlikely to affect the Asian continent. The ambient concentrations of $PM_{2.5}$-related anions ($NH_4{^+}$, $NO_3{^-}$, and $SO_4{^{2-}}$) and their relative contributions to $PM_{2.5}$ were also investigated in four study areas. The concentrations of these major water-soluble ions exhibit not only strong spatial dependence but also different ratios to each other. Asbestos fiber (crocidolite and amosite) concentration values changed in the range of 2.5 to 14.4 f per liter of air. The number of pollen grains showed that Cedar ranked higher in concentration than other types of pollen, with the maximum concentration at site A.

  • 우리나라에서의 철도는 도로교통에 비해 수송분담율이 상대적으로 낮지만, 2001년을 기준으로 1년 동안 824만 명을 수송하여 전체 여객 수송량의 약 6.2 %를 차지하고 있다. 최근 연구결과 비도로용으로 사용되고 있는 디젤엔진이 NOx와 입자상 오염물질 배출의 주요한 오염원으로 밝혀졌다. 국내외적으로 대기오염원 중 자동차나 트럭 등 도로용 차량에서 배출되는 오염물질에 대해서는 오래 전부터 관심을 기울여 왔지만, 디젤기관차, 선박 및 경작, 건설, 벌목, 채굴 장비 등을 포함하는 비도로용 이동오염원에 의한 오염물질 배출제어에 관해서는 논의가 거의 이루어진 적이 없었다.   • 국제 표준화 연구와 관련하여, 측정 및 분석과 관련된 국제기관들이 참여하여 1993년에 발행된 측정 불확도의 표현지침인 GUM은 데이터의 품질 관리 및 보증의 수단으로서 활발히 연구되고 있다. 특히, 국제적으로도 CCQM, CITAC, Eurachem, NIST 등의 기관을 중심으로 GUM 규격의 적용이 활발히 연구되고 있으나, 미국보다는 유럽에서 데이터 품질의 계량화 기술로서 연구되고 있다. 한편, 유해 대기오염물질인 중금속측정 자료가 국내에 축적되고 있음에도 불구하고 이러한 물질에 대한 측정 불확도가 거의 평가된 적이 없어 분석 값에 대한 보증을 위해 행하는 일련의 과정에 대한 표준 절차서가 시급한 현실이다.(중략)

Experimental Study on Particle Collection Efficiency of Axial-flow Cyclone in Air Handling Unit (공기조화기 장착용 축상유입식 싸이클론의 입자제거효율에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • A novel particle removal system for air handling unit (AHU) of subway station was evaluated experimentally. The novel system was designed in order to minimize the maintenance cost by applying axial-flow cyclones. The system consists of multiple cyclone units and dust trap. Based on our previous numerical study, it was found to be effective for removal $1\sim10{\mu}m$ sized dust particles. In this study, we manufactured the mock-up model and evaluated the model experimentally. Liquid and solid test particles were generated for evaluating collection efficiency of the system and the pressure drop was monitored. The collection efficiency was varied from 41.2% to 85.9% with increasing the sizes of particle from 1 to $6.5{\mu}m$ by particle count ratio of inlet and outlet. The pressure drop was maintained constant less than $20mmH_2O$. In addition, the collection efficiency was estimated by total mass for solid test particles. It was found that the collection efficiency was 65.7% by particle mass ratio of inlet and outlet. It shows that present system can replace current pre-filters used in subway HVAC system for removing particulate matters with minimal operational cost.

Air Pollutant Emission Factors from Composite Wood Products Manufacturing in Korea

  • In Korea, there is a general lack of information available on air emissions from industry. The reasons for this include the lack of regulatory requirements for emission monitoring, limited information on specific industries, and difficulties in monitoring certain sources. This paper presents the first detailed air pollutant emission factors from composite wood product manufacturing in Korea. This study introduced emission factors for wood-based panels such as plywood, particle board (PB), and medium density fiberboard (MDF). The emission factors of particulate matters (PM) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) from MDF were higher than that from other wood products. The concentration of total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) for hot press from wood-based panels was higher than drying or gluing processes. Emissions data from NPIP were compared to the data from the suggested emission factors in this study and the US EPA's. The data from our emission factors were closer to the observed results than the data using the US EPA's emission factor.

Collection Efficiency Enhancement of Spray Tower Scrubber by Introducing Electrospray with Two-flow Nozzle (분무탑식 스크러버에서 이류체 정전분무에 의한 집진효율의 향상)

  • There have been a number of efforts to satisfy national emission regulations and reduce the amount of emitted air pollutants. There are several air pollution control devices, however, only wet scrubber is efficiently used to remove particulate matters and gaseous pollutants, even if it has minimum collection efficiency in the particle size range of $0.1{\sim}1{\mu}m$. This study aimed to improve the collection efficiency of a spray tower type scrubber by introducing an electrospray system with two-flow nozzle. We found that the collection efficiency of a spray tower type scrubber was similar to that of a conventional wet scrubber. However, installation of an electrospray system in the scrubber resulted in drastic further improvement of collection efficiency comparing to that of a conventional scrubber, which is 26%, 35.2%, and 45.1% at the liquid to gas ratio of 0.26 $L/m^3$ and 19.9%, 35.1%, and 42.5% at 0.34 $L/m^3$ for the applied voltage of -30 kV, -35 kV, and -40 kV, respectively. Therefore, we found that the introduction of an electrospray system is very effective to improve the collection efficiency of a spray tower type scrubber.
