Radioactivity concentrations for natural radionuclides were determined from fine dust samples collected in Jeju, Korea according to atmospheric events (Asian dust, haze, fog-mist, and non-event), and radium equivalent activity was calculated. The mean atmospheric radioactivity concentrations for 238U, 232Th, and 40K in 127 fine dust samples were 0.49, 0.24, and 7.23 µBq m-3, respectively, and the radium equivalent activity was 33.25 Bq kg-1. The mean concentrations of 238U and 232Th in the fine dust during the Asian dust period were 1.31 and 1.60 µBq m-3, respectively, above the global average, while the values for the other three atmospheric events were lower. The ratio of 232Th/238U radioactivity during the Asian dust period was 1.22, higher than the ratio for the other three atmospheric events.

This study aims to enhance the accuracy of fine dust predictions by analyzing various factors within the local environment, in addition to atmospheric conditions. In the atmospheric environment, meteorological and air pollution data were utilized, and additional factors contributing to fine dust generation within the region, such as traffic volume and electricity transaction data, were sequentially incorporated for analysis. XGBoost, Random Forest, and ANN (Artificial Neural Network) were employed for the analysis. As variables were added, all algorithms demonstrated improved performance. Particularly noteworthy was the Artificial Neural Network, which, when using atmospheric conditions as a variable, resulted in an MAE of 6.25. Upon the addition of traffic volume, the MAE decreased to 5.49, and further inclusion of power transaction data led to a notable improvement, resulting in an MAE of 4.61. This research provides valuable insights for proactive measures against air pollution by predicting future fine dust levels.
During a twenty-day period in 2005, a nine-stage Andersen cascade impactor was used to determine the seasonal size distribution of atmospheric particles and its inorganic ion species sampled for 24hr in Iksan city, located southwest of the Korean peninsula. Samples were analyzed for major water-soluble ion species using Dionex-100 ion chromatograph. Average fine and coarse mass concentrations of atmospheric particles were, respectively, 31.4 and $82.6{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$ in spring and 35.8 and $73.4{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$ in fall-winter during the sampling period of 2005, while measurements of 69.8 and 9.9 were obtained in the sampling period of summer, The size distribution of particulate mass concentration during the non-Asian dust period was generally bimodal, whereas the size distribution of particulate mass concentration during the Asian dust period was unimodal due to the significant increase of coarse particles, which originated from long-range transport of soil dust particles from loess regions of the Asian continent. Among ionic species, $SO{_4}^{2-},\;NH{_4}^+,\;K^+$ were mainly distributed in fine particles due to their characteristics of emission sources and gas-to-particle conversion, while $Na^+,\;Mg^{2+}\;and\;Ca^{2+}$ were dominantly in coarse particles. However, $NO_3{^-}\;and\;Cl^-$ were distributed in both coarse particles and fine particles. Although $SO{_4}^{2-}$ was mainly distributed in fine particles, the size distributions of $SO{_4}^{2-}$ in coarse mode were significantly increased during the Asian dust events compared to those during the non-Asian dust period. $Ca^{2+}$ showed the most abundant species in the atmospheric particles during the Asian dust period. $NH{_4}^+$ was found to mainly exist as $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ in fine particles.

Recently, according to the severity of air pollution, interest in air pollution is increasing. The IoT based fine dust monitoring system proposed in this paper allows the measurement and monitoring of fine dust, volatile organic compounds, carbon dioxide, etc., which are the biggest causes affecting the human body among air environmental pollution. The proposed system consisted of a device that measures atmospheric environment information, a server system for storing and analyzing measured information, an integrated monitoring management system for administrators and smart phone applications for users to enable visualization analysis of atmospheric environment information in real time. In addition, the effectiveness of the proposed fine dust monitoring system based on the Internet of Things was verified by using the response speed of the system, the transmission speed of the sensor data, and the measurement error of the sensor. The fine dust monitoring system based on the Internet of Things proposed in this paper is expected to increase user convenience and efficiency of the system by visualizing the air pollution condition after measuring the air environment information with portable fine dust measuring device.
Recently, as the amount of fine dust has risen rapidly, our interest is increasing day by day. It is virtually impossible to remove fine dust. However, it is best to predict the concentration of fine dust and minimize exposure to it. In this study, we developed a mathematical model that can predict the concentration of fine dust using various information related to the weather and air quality, which is provided in real time in 'Air Korea (http://www.airkorea.or.kr/)' and 'Weather Data Open Portal (https://data.kma.go.kr/).' In the mathematical model, various domestic seasonal variables and atmospheric state variables are extracted by multiple regression analysis. The parameters that have significant influence on the fine dust concentration are extracted, and using ANN (Artificial Neural Network) and SVM (Support Vector Machine), which are machine learning techniques, we proposed a prediction model. The proposed model can verify its effectiveness by using past dust and weather big data.

This study investigated physicochemical and optical characteristics for three episodes of Asian dust, stagnant haze and long-range transport haze and for one clean day. $PM_{10}$ mass concentration during Asian dust and two haze days was increased by 2~9 times compared to that of clean episode. During Asian dust episode, coarse particle concentration was increased and the mass concentration of calcium in a coarse mode ($1.8{\sim}10{\mu}m$) was $5.4{\mu}g/m^3$ which was 7 times higher than that of clean episode. The calcium was presented as a form of $CaCO_3$ in a coarse mode. During the two haze episodes, fine particle (< $1.8{\mu}m$) concentration was increased and secondary inorganic pollutants such as sulfate, ammonium and nitrate composed of 90% of the total ions. $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ and $NH_4NO_3$ were dominant in a fine mode for stagnant haze episode. But they were the most dominant form in both fine mode and coarse mode for long-range transport haze episode. According to the optical properties for each episode (Asian dust, stagnant haze and long-range transport haze) were classified as dust, black carbon and mixture, respectively.

This paper has comprehensively reviewed fine dust control technology from emission sources. Owing to the stringent national regulation, domestic industries have made consistent efforts to develop the high efficiency facilities since 1960s. In these days, harmful particulate pollutants including dioxins and PAHs as well as $PM_{2.5}$ are also of critical interests in government and civic groups. In addition, simultaneous treatment of gas and particles is being widely studied. It is believed that hybrid facilities which integrate a few advanced equipment may meet the atmospheric guidelines.

Cyclones have been extensively used in the industry for removing fine particles from the gaseous streams, based on simplicity in design and construction in association with low cost and flexibility to operate in extreme and harsh environments. However, industrial cyclones are typically not very efficient for particles smaller than 10μm. In this work, in order to improve the separation efficiency of reverse flow cyclones, a simple device named Post Cyclone(Poc) in installed on the top of an existing cyclone. Thereby the residual swirl present at the outlet (vortex finder) of a conventional cyclone has been used to capture the escaped dust from the cyclone in the PoC. The performance of PoC was closely evaluated by changing configuration of the PoC and operation condition. In addition, the dust behaviour in th PoC was investigated based on the hypothesis of residual vortex.

In this study the distribution patterns of the metallic components were analyzed both before and after the Asian Dust (AD) events at 2001 by comparing the chemical composition of metallic components in terms of various statistical methods. According to the AD/NAD concentration ratio of metallic components, the main components of crustal soils were exhibiting the values above 1.0; but opposite results were seen dominantly for hazardous metallic components. Examination of fine-to-coarse (F/C) ratios of metallic components showed higher values for major anthropogenic components including Pb (5.83). Ni (2.61), etc. Comparison of our measurement data with those obtained within and across the Korean peninsula indicated that the metallic distribution patterns of the study area can be distinguished from previous studies. The results of our analysis, when investigated in relation with air mass movement patterns. indicated evidence of the direct influence of AD events and anthropogenic processes.

To characterize airborne particulate carbon and its temporal variation in the heavily industrialized metropolitan city, Seoul in South Korea, aerosol sampling was performed from 1986 to 1996. Correlation coefficients of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) with mass concentration of fine particles ($\underline{\leq}$2.1 ${\mu}m$) are 0.73 and 0.51, respectively. EC concentrations of the fine particle mode are 10.1, 5.9, 4.5, and 7.4 ${\mu}g\;m^{-3}$ in winter, spring, summer, and autumn, respectively. On the other hand, OC concentration shows maximum value in winter and followed by autumn, summer, and spring. A seasonal peak in the ratio of OC to EC in fine particles was observed during the summer photochemical season from June to August. Concentrations of EC and OC in Asian dust storm events are generally higher than in non- Asian dust storm events except in 1990. The difference of EC concentrations between Asian dust storm periods and non-Asian dust storm periods are much larger than those of OC concentrations. There are slight increases of EC concentration between 1987 and 1990 and a gradual decrease between 1990 and 1996.
