Technical Approaches for Assessment of Ground Water Contamination with TCE in an Industrial Area

  • Despite its usability, TCE has been managed as a hazardous material due to the toxicity and many contamination cases were surveyed in some developed countries. U.S.EPA(Kram et al., 2001) suggested DNAPL characterization methods and approaches based on survey experiences at several sites. However, Korea has not the least assessment of contamination and trial of remediation, although there are a lot of doubtable areas where ground water would be contaminated with TCE. In this study, we try to assess the volume and extent of ground water contamination with TCE and delineate the contamination source zones in an industrial area. Ground water in this area flows through fractures and the contaminant TCE has the properties of high volatility, high density and low partitioning to soil material. Thus, we applied a variety of technical approaches to identify the contamination status; documentary, hydrogeochemical, hydrogeological and geological surveys. In addition, additional survey was performed based on the interim findings, which showed that ground water contamination was limited to the relatively small area with high concentrations to the deep place. The contamination source zone is estimated to be the asphalt test institute where a great deal of TCE has been used to analyze the amount of asphalt soluble in TCE since 1984. Based on the contamination characterization and a myriad of documents about ground water remediation, appropriate site remediation management options will be recommended later. This study is now under way and this paper was focused on describing the technical approaches used to achieve the goals of this study.

  • Soil environment has not received much attention from the environmental impact assessor community although soil contamination may affect human health and the eco-system. This study was the first trial to discuss the role and importance of soil environment in the environmental impact assessment(EIA) and suggest possible environmental impact assessment schemes for soil. The objectives of the study were to show the effects of soil contamination on human health, the environment and the social community, suggest efficient EIA schemes in Korea and establish the basic concepts of soil environment assessment involving fate and transport of contaminants and its risk.

국내 폐금속 광산지역에서의 토양, 지하수, 쌀의 중금속 노출에 따른 인체 위해성평가 (Risk Assessment for Heavy Metals in Soil, Ground Water, Rice Grain nearby Abandoned Mine Areas)

  • BACKGROUND: The objectives of this study are to investigate the contamination levels of heavy metals in soil, ground water, and agricultural product near the abandoned Boeun and Sanggok mine areas in Korea and to assess the health risk for these local residents exposed to the toxic heavy metals based on analytical data. METHODS AND RESULTS: By the results of human health risk assessment for local residents around Boeun and Sanggok, human exposure to cadmium, copper, arsenic from soil and to lead, cadmium, and arsenic from rice grain were higher in Sanggok, but human exposure to zinc and arsenic from ground water was higher in Boeun. By the results of hazard index (HI) evaluation for arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc, HI values in both areas were higher than 1.0. This result indicated that the toxicity hazard through the continuous exposure to lead, cadmium, arsenic from rice, ground water, and soil would be likely to occur to the residents in the areas. Cancer risk assessment for arsenic, risks from the rice were exposed to one to two out of 10,000 people in Boeun and one of 1,000 people in Sanggok. These results showed that the cancer risks of arsenic in both areas were 10~100 times greater than the acceptable cancer risk range of US EPA ($1{\times}10^{-6}{\sim}1{\times}10^{-5}$). CONCLUSION(S): Therefore, if these two local residents consume continuously with arsenic contaminated soil, ground water, and rice, the adverse health effects (carcinogenic potential) would be more increased.

해안선의 형태를 고려한 지하수 해안 유출량 평가 기법 (Assessment of Coastal Ground Water Discharge for Complex Coastlines)

  • 해안을 통하여 유출되는 지하수량은 하천 유출량에 비하여 상대적으로 크기는 작으나 해안 지역의 지하수자원의 개발과 연안의 오염과 관련하여 중요성을 가진다. 선행 연구에서는 관측정 수위, 투수계수 등의 간단한 자료만을 가지고 지하수의 해안 유출량을 평가하는 방법을 제시하였다 본 연구에서는 남해안과 서해안과 같이 해안선의 형태가 복잡한 경우에 평균동수경사, 해안선의 폭과 담수층의 평균 두께를 산정하는 방법을 제시하여 지하수 해안유출량 평가의 정확도를 높이는 방법을 제안하였다. 제안된 평가 방법은 경계면모델을 이용한 수치해와 비교하여 평가되었다. 해안선의 복잡성을 고려하지 않은 Darcy의 법칙의 적용에 비하여 정확도가 대폭 개선되었다.

  • Four types of land use were selected for sampling and study with different characteristics of heavy metal contamination during the period from August 1998 to June 2000. A series of studies have been carried out concerning the physicochemical characteristics of the sediments settling down in a gully pot to evaluate the contamination of Pb, Zn, Cd, Co, Cr and Cu. An examination of six elements indicated that Zn, Cu and Pb were the heavy metals severely impacted by anthropogenic input in Seoul. An assessment of 60 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in urban runoff and ground water was conducted based on samples collected from 31 sites and 12 wells, respectively, in Seoul City. The higher levels of alkyl benzenes in urban runoff indicated that Seoul areas were mainly contaminated through traffic sources.

  • 본 논문에서는 폐광산지역의 오염특성 조사와 평가를 위한 지구화학적 접근방법에 대하여 정리ㆍ기술하였다. 폐광산지역의 주요 오염원은 갱내수, 광석, 광미 및 선광을 위해 사용한 화학약품 등이고 산성광산배수의 배출, 광산폐기물의 유실, 유해성 침출수의 배출, 광미와 분진의 분산 등에 의해 중금속이 이동/확산되어 주변토양, 퇴적물, 지표수, 지하수, 생태계에 광역적/지속적으로 심각한 영향을 미친다. 따라서 오염원, 주변 토양, 지표수, 지하수 등에 대한 화학분석, 광물학적분석, 광산산성배수 예측실험, 물리/지화학탐사와 같은 현장실험 등의 방법을 이용한 조사를 통해 폐광산이 주변 환경에 미치는 잠재적이고 실제적인 영향이 조사$.$평가 되어야한다.

A Pesticide Residue Risk Assessment from Agricultural Land Using GIS

  • Water quality contamination issues are of critical concern to human health, whilst pesticide release generated from irrigated land should be considered for protecting natural habitats and human health. This paper suggests new method for evaluation and analysis using the GIS technique based on integrated spatial modeling framework. The pesticide use on irrigated land is a subset of the larger spectrum of industrial chemicals used in modern society. The behavior of a pesticide is affected by the natural affinity of the chemical for one of four environmental compartments; solid matter, liquid, gaseous form, and biota. However, the major movements are a physical transport over the ground surface by rainfall-runoff and irrigation-runoff. The irrigated water carries out with the transporting sediments and makes contaminated water by pesticide. This paper focuses on risk impact identification and assessment using GIS technique. Also, generated data on pesticide residues on farmland and surface water through GIS simulation will be reflected to environmental research programs. Finally, this study indicates that GIS application is a beneficial tool for spatial pesticide impact analysis as well as environmental risk assessment.

  • In this research potential liquation of contaminants from surrounding soil to a reservoir in an island was studied to investigate the cause and route of contamination of Baengyeong-myeon reservoir. Soil of Baengyeong-myeon reservoir consists of $SiO_2$ and has a high iron content because of geological characteristics of its country rock. From the field investigation and simulation study it was found that highly accumulated carbon content in the reservoir sediment was incurred from ground water, which provides a good habitat for microbes. And the liquation, the cause of organics growth, occurs mainly on the bottom of the reservoir consisting marine clay layer once used as farmland. So dredging of the sediment of reservoir and replacing with valley soil is suggested to prevent continuous contamination of a reservoir in an island due to COD production.

Groundwater vulnerability assessment in the southern coastal sedimentary basin of Benin using DRASTIC, modified DRASTIC, Entropy Weight DRASTIC and AVI

  • The importance of groundwater has long been recognized, but the ground water potential to become contaminated as a result of human activities has only been recognized in recently. Before 1980 it was thought that soils served as filters, preventing harmful substances deposited at the surface from migrating into groundwater. Today it is known that soils have a finite capacity to protect groundwater. It can be contaminated from divers sources. Therefore, Assessment of aquifer vulnerability to pollution is essential for the protection and management of groundwater and land use planning. In this study, we used DRASTIC and AVI for groundwater vulnerability to contamination assessment. the different methods were applied to the southern coastal sedimentary basin of Benin and DRASTIC method was modified in two different steps. First, we modified DRASTIC by adding land use parameter to include the actual pollution sources (DRASTICLcLu) and second, classic DRASTIC weights was modified using Shannon's entropy (Entropy weight DRASTIC). The reliability of the applied approaches was verified using nitrate (NO3-) concentration and by comparing the overall vulnerability maps to the previous researches in the study area and in the world. The results from validation showed that the addition of landcover/land use parameter to the classic DRASTIC helps to improve the method for better definition of the vulnerable areas in the basin and also, the weight modification using entropy improved better the method because Entropy weight DRASTICLcLu showed the highest correlation with nitrate concentration in the study basin. In summary the weight modification using entropy approach reduced the uncertainty of the human subjectivity in assigning weights and ratings in the standard DRASTIC.

사용종료 비위생 매립지의 환경 안정성 평가 - 감곡 매립지 사례 연구 - (Assessment on Environmental Stabilization of Used Open Dumping Landfill - A Case Study of Kamkok Landfill -)

  • 사용 종료된 매립지의 환경적 영향에 따른 매립 후 변화에 대한 안전성 평가를 위하여 매립 폐기물의 성상 및 가스분석을 통한 연구의 결과는 매립폐기물의 물리적 성상분석의 유기성분이 29.72~63.84%이었고, 비닐 플라스틱류는 평균 32.88%로 가연성 물질의 대부분을 차지하고 있었으며, 침출수의 성분 중 $BOD_5$/CODcr비가 0.18정도로 나타났다. TS의 62.71%중 VS는 30.37%, FS는 32.34%로 FS의 비중이 약간 높게 나타났으며, 매립폐기물의 C/N비는 21.8로 나타났다. 매립지 주변 지표수는 BOD 10.7mg/g, SS의 경우 37.8mg/g, 대장균 31,157(MPN/$100m{\ell}$)로 나타났고, 지하수는 $COD_{Mn}$은 1.13-1.38mg/g, $NO_3-N$은 1.025-4.075mg/g로 나타났다. 침출수는 T-P 0.002-0.028mg/g, $NH_3-N$ 4.0-21.0mg/g로 나타났으며, BOD/CODcr비가 평균 0.18로 나타났다. 토양은 토양오염우려기준에 하회하는 농도분포를 나타내었으며, 매립가스의 $CH_4$$CO_2$가스는 각각 13.25%, 6.17%로 나타났고, $H_2S$나 CO가스는 검출되지 않았다. 지표 가스는 $CO_2$, $CH_4$, $H_2S$, CO가스 농도는 검출되지 않았으며, $NH_3$가스 농도는 평균 7.56ppm으로 분석되었다.
