This paper proposes an object-oriented conceptual information model of mechanical assemblies, named open assembly model (OAM). The proposed assembly model primarily defines hierarchical relationships between parts and subassemblies. Together with the assembly hierarchy. the model also provides a way to represent tolerances, kinematic information, and parametric assembly constraints. Relational information such as mating conditions and degree of freedom between parts and subassemblies is captured via assembly features and relationships thereof. The information model is described using class diagrams of the Unified Modeling Language (UML), and instance diagrams are used to exemplify the proposed information model. The conceptual model presented in this paper is an integrated information model for assembly representation, which could supply necessary information for tolerance analysis and synthesis, kinematic simulation, and assembly simulation. Such a conceptual information model plays an important role for the exchange of information between modeling, analysis and planning systems. Hence, the proposed model could serve as a framework for developing data exchange standards of mechanical assemblies. The proposed model is demonstrated through a case study of a planetary gear assembly.

This paper presents spatial relationshaps and engineering features for the feature based modeling of Sheet Metal Weld Assemblies (SMWA) that are made of sheet metal components through are welding processes. Spatial relationships in ProMod-S, a sheet metal product modeler, are further extended for the SMWA modeling. Some spatial relationships for special weld joint types are newly introduced. The geometrical and topological relations between spatial reationship, mating features, and assembly features are defined. Finally, assembly data stucturess for the product modeling of SMWA are proposed. They are an engineering relation to represent the constraints between component features, and a mating bond to integrate component design information.

Uncertainties are inevitable in robotic assembly in unstructured environment since it is difficult to construct fixtures to guide motions of robots. This paper proposes an augmented Petri net and an algorithm to adapt the assembly model on-line during actual assembly process. The augmented Petri net identifies events using force and position information simultaneously. Unmodeled contact states are identified and incorporated into the model on-line. The proposed method increases the level of intelligence of the robot system by enhancing the autonomy. The proposed method is evaluated by simulation and experiments with L-type peg-in-hole assembly using a two-arm robot system.

Finite element vibration analysis of the trial 5x5 partial fuel assembly in the still water was performed using the substructure method. ANSYS software was used as a finite element modeling and modal analysis tool. The calculated natural frequencies of the partial fuel assembly were more consistent with the experimental results for the identical test model compared to the much larger solid model. This modeling technique can be utilized for the fuel assembly dynamic behavior analysis under normal operation, seismic and loss-of-coolant-accident analysis.
Prefabricated bridges require strict management of tolerance during fabrication and assembly. In this paper, digital engineering models for prefabricated bridge components such as deck, girder, pier, abutment are suggested to support information delivery through the life-cycle of the bridge. Rule-based modeling is used to define geometry of the members considering variable dimensions due to fabrication and assembly error. DfMA(design for manufacturing and assembly) provides the rules for ease of fabrication and assembly. The digital engineering model consists of geometry, constraints and corresponding parameters for each phase. Alignment and control points are defined to manage tolerances of the prefabricated bridge during fabrication and assembly. Quality control by digital measurement of dimensions was also considered in the model definition. A pilot bridge was defined virtually to validate the suggested digital engineering models. The digital engineering models for DfMA showed excellent potential to realize prefabricated bridges.

This paper presents a dynamic modeling and a robust PID controller design process for the wire bonder head assembly. For the modeling elements, the system is divided into electrical system, magnetic system, and mechanical system. Each system is modeled by using the bond graph method. The PID controller is used for high speed/high accuracy position control of the wire bonder assembly. The Taguchi method is used to evaluate the more robust PID gain combinations than conventional one. This study makes use of an L18 array with three parameters varied on three levels. Computer simulations and experimental results show that the designed PID controller provides more improved signal to noise ratio and reduced sensitivity than the conventional PID controller.

Developed in this paper is a feature based modeling of welded plate construction(WPC) which is composed of flat or bended plates represented as reference plane with a constant thickness. First, the necessity and the characteristics of the feature based modeling of WPC as compared with the assemblies of mechanical parts are investigated. Second, feature library for the assemblied of WPC is shown which contains several types of features like joint feature, groove feature, materialfeature and precision feature. Third, the assembly procedures are presented whichmainly consist of both the assembly transformation and the correct assembly checking. Fourth, weld lines generated in the assembled WPC are defined so that those can be used in the process planning or the manufacturing stage. Finally, A prototype system isdeveloped by using a geometric modeling software Pro/Engineer, a graphic software GL(Graphic Library), and C language on a CAD workstation IRIS.

Presented in the paper is a systematic approach to constructing a Petri net model of FAS (flexible assembly system). Petri net is widely used in modeling automated manufacturing systems. But, it found to be very difficult for an FA engineer to build a correct model of an FAS with Petri net symbols (ie, place, transition, and token) from the beginning. An automated manufacturing system in general is built from a set of "standard" hardware components. An FAS in particular is usually composed of assembly robots, work tables, conveyor lines, buffer storages, part feeders, etc. In the proposed modeling scheme, each type of standard resources is represented as a standard "module" which is a sub Petri net. Then, the model of a FAS can be conveniently constructed using the predefined modules the same way the FAS itself is built from the standard components. The network representation of a FAS is termed a JR-net (job resource relation net) which is easy to construct. This JR net is then mechanically converted to a formal Petri net (to simulate the behavior of the FAS). The proposed modeling scheme may easily be extended to the modeling of other types of automated manufacturing systems such as FMS and AS/RS.ch as FMS and AS/RS.
