  • This is a basic research for producing hot-mix recycled asphalt mixtures and suggesting methods for solving quality problems, if any. Various mixing methods are introduced to mate aging evenly between old and virgin aggregates and to improve aging conditions. Gel-permeation chromatography(GPC) analysis was performed to evaluate aging of binders coated on coarse aggregates and a matrix separately. Round-shaped aggregates(13m gravel) were used in manufacturing mixtures for analysis of aging levels in recycled mixtures. It was found out that there was significant difference in aging levels between the binder coated on RAP's coarse aggregates and on virgin aggregates in a recycled mixture. The difference in the aging level was reduced by modifying mixing method(RAP and virgin binders were mixed first and then virgin aggregates were introduced). Among A to E mixing methods studied, the D was turned out to be the best.

  • Marshall stability and flow don't reflect mechanical property of asphalt mixtures and have little correlation with rutting-related performance. There is often rutting occurred on the asphalt pavement which was constructed using a mixture passing the specification for stability and flow. This study dealt with comparison of volumetric properties of mixtures from Marshall mix design and from Superpave mix design. This study used one binder, three aggregates and two gradations. The mixtures were manufactured by each mix design method. Result showed that OAC, VMA and VFA by Marshall mix design were higher than those by Superpave mix design. This is because Mashall mixture has the gradation prone to rutting and it should be further investigated whether or not the high OAC is direct cause of rutting in asphalt pavement.

  • The pavement performance model is the most important factor to determine the pavement life in the mechanistic-empirical pavement design guide (MEPDG). As part of Korean Pavement Research Program (KPRP), the Korean Pavement Design Guide (KPDG) is currently being developed based on mechanistic-empirical principle. In this paper, the rutting prediction model of asphalt mixtures, one of the pavement performance model, has been developed using triaxial repeated loading testing data. This test was conducted on various types of asphalt mixtures for investigating the rutting characteristics by varying with the temperature and air void. The calibration process was made for the coefficients of rutting prediction model using the accelerated pavement testing data. The accuracy of prediction model can be increased when by considering the effect of individual rutting properties of materials rather than shear stresses with depths.

  • In this study, the engineering charateristics of recycled cold asphalt mixtures using waste glass and red mud were examined as part of the development of low carbon road pavement materials using large amounts of waste. It also examined the satisfaction of the performance criteria specified in the standard. As a result of the study, it was found that RCA using waste glass were not met standard of GR since strain resistance reduced. Therefore, it has been shown that improvements in the composition of the mixture are needed. It has also been shown to significantly improve the performance of the mixture when adding red mud. In addition, it was found that the quality standards for stability, flow value, indirect tensile strength and tensile strength ratio as specified by GR are satisfied.

  • In this study, permanent deformation of asphalt trackbed was investigated by performing repetitive load test on specimen made with dense graded asphalt mixture that was specially prepared for asphalt trackbed foundation. The obtained test results were compared with those computed from the prediction model proposed by AASHTO 2002, called MEPDG. No prediction model adaptable only for permanent deformation of the asphalt trackbed foundation has yet been developed, so the prediction model by AASHTO was adapted in this study to simulate permanent deformation of trackbed foundations in asphalt slab track and in ballasted asphalt track. In order to simulate permanent deformation, a finite element analysis was performed to obtain stresses generated in trackbed due to wheel load. It was found that the predicted permanent deformation was much smaller than the anticipated deformation and that the asphalt track could be stable during the service life of the structure.

  • Reclaimed aggregates through waste asphalt are produced and utilized for waste resource utilization. This study conducts quality tests and performance evaluations for mixtures with Rejuvenator applied to reclaimed asphalt concrete. Through quality testing and performance evaluation, the study investigates whether there is any problem in using reclaimed asphalt concrete by replacing general hox mix asphalt. As a result, the values of ordinary hot mix asphalt are similar to those of reclaimed asphalt, suggesting that the substitution does not create critical engineering issues. Using reclaimed asphalt concrete has the advantages of increasing economic efficiency and utilizing waste resources.

  • OBJECTIVES : The objective of this research is to determine the moisture resistance of the freeze-thaw process occurring in low-noise porous pavement using either hydrated-lime or anti-freezing agent. Various additives were applied to low-noise porous asphalt, which is actively paved in South Korea, to overcome its disadvantages. Moreover, the optimum contents of hydrated-lime and anti-freezing agent and behavior properties of low-noise porous asphalt layer are determined using dynamic moduli via the freeze-thaw test. METHODS : The low-noise porous asphalt mixtures were made using gyratory compacters to investigate its properties with either hydrated-lime or anti-freezing agent. To determine the dynamic moduli of each mixture, impact resonance test was conducted. The applied standard for the freeze-thaw test of asphalt mixture is ASTM D 6857. The freeze-thaw and impact resonance tests were performed twice at each stage. The behavior properties were defined using finite element method, which was performed using the dynamic modulus data obtained from the freeze-thaw test and resonance frequencies obtained from non-destructive impact test. RESULTS : The results show that the coherence and strength of the low-noise porous asphalt mixture decreased continuously with the increase in the temperature of the mixture. The dynamic modulus of the normal low-noise porous asphalt mixture dramatically decreased after one cycle of freezing and thawing stages, which is more than that of other mixtures containing additives. The damage rate was higher when the freeze-thaw test was repeated. CONCLUSIONS : From the root mean squared error (RMSE) and mean percentage error (MPE) analyses, the addition rates of 1.5% hydrated-lime and 0.5% anti-freezing agent resulted in the strongest mixture having the highest moisture resistance compared to other specimens with each additive in 1 cycle freeze-thaw test. Moreover, the freeze-thaw resistance significantly improved when a hydrated-lime content of 0.5% was applied for the two cycles of the freeze-thaw test. Hence, the optimum contents of both hydrated-lime and anti-freezing agent are 0.5%.

  • The simulation of dynamic load was conducted based on surface profile on asphalt concrete pavement, vehicle speeds, and suspension types using a truck simulation program. The results of the simulated dynamic load based on different surface profile, vehicle speeds, and suspension types are analyzed. As pavement roughness and vehicle speed are increased, the dynamic load was increased. Walking beam suspension produces greater dynamic load than air spring suspension. Pavement damage index is calculated based on covariance of dynamic load and Paris-Erdogan fracture parameter, n which is based on creep compliance tests of asphalt mixtures used in Korea. The higher covariance of dynamic load, confidence level, and fracture parameter are used, the greater pavement damage index is obtained. Specification of pavement roughness can be developed in various vehicle speeds and asphalt mixtures, and pay factor can be determined after constructing asphalt concrete pavement using pavement damage concepts.

  • The optimum fiber and asphalt binder contents were decided on the base of the Mashall mix design method. To compare the mechanical characteristics between the conventional(dense-graded 20) and the fiber-reinforced mixtures, indirect tension tests were conducted under three temperatures(5, 20, 60$^{\circ}C$). In particular, the wheel tracking tests were performed to evaluate the rutting resistances of the mixtures. Test results showed that the indirect tensile strength of fiber-reinforced asphalt concrete was higher than that of conventional one. The toughness of fiber-reinforced mixture was 1.27 to 1.97 times higher than that of conventional one, depending upon the temperature. In addition, the results of wheel tracking tests and the retained indirect splitting tension tests conducted at $60^{\circ}C$ revealed that the resistance to permanent deformation of fiber-reinforced mixture was stronger than that of the conventional one.

  • This study evaluated the laboratory properties of asphalt binder and mixture modified with SPC(Sulfur Polymer Cement), which consists of sulfur as a main ingredient that is an industrial by-product made from refining process of crude oil and carbon-black as an additive. Four levels of SPC modifier ratios(0, 10, 30, 50%) were evaluated in the laboratory. Superpave(Superior Performing Asphalt Pavements) system was used to determine the PG(Performance Grade) and evaluate the property of SPC modified binder at the different temperatures. IDT(Indirect Tensile Test) was performed to evaluate the resistance of fatigue and low-temperature cracking at $10^{\circ}C\;and\;-10^{\circ}C$. Wheel-tracking test was also performed to evaluate the rutting-resistance of SPC modified asphalt mixtures. Test results showed that the more SPC modifier ratios, the better rutting-resistance and the more potential of low-temperature cracking resistance. However, SPC modifier did not show the effect on the fatigue cracking resistance.
