This paper deals with artificial neural network approach for automatic detection of severity level of stator winding fault in induction motor. The problem is faced through modelling and simulation of induction motor with inter coil shorting in stator winding. The sum of the absolute values of difference in the peak values of phase currents from each half cycle has been chosen as the main input to the classifier. Sample values from workspace of Simulink model, which are verified with experiment setup practically, have been imported to neural network architecture. Consideration of a single input extracted from time domain simplifies and advances the fault detection technique. The output of the feed forward back propagation neural network classifies the short circuit fault level of the stator winding.
This study proposed a robust artificial intelligence (AI) model based on the social behaviour of the imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) and artificial neural network (ANN) for modelling the deflection of reinforced concrete beams, abbreviated as ICA-ANN model. Accordingly, the ICA was used to adjust and optimize the parameters of an ANN model (i.e., weights and biases) aiming to improve the accuracy of the ANN model in modelling the deflection reinforced concrete beams. A total of 120 experimental datasets of reinforced concrete beams were employed for this aim. Therein, applied load, tensile reinforcement strength and the reinforcement percentage were used to simulate the deflection of reinforced concrete beams. Besides, five other AI models, such as ANN, SVM (support vector machine), GLMNET (lasso and elastic-net regularized generalized linear models), CART (classification and regression tree) and KNN (k-nearest neighbours), were also used for the comprehensive assessment of the proposed model (i.e., ICA-ANN). The comparison of the derived results with the experimental findings demonstrates that among the developed models the ICA-ANN model is that can approximate the reinforced concrete beams deflection in a more reliable and robust manner.
Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) have the capability to develop functional relationships between input-output patterns obtained from any source. Thus ANN can be conveniently used to develop a generalised relationship from limited and sometimes inconsistent data, and can therefore also be applied to tackle the data obtained from wind tunnel tests on building models with large number of variables. In this paper ANN model has been developed for predicting wind induced pressures in various zones of a Gable Building from limited test data. The procedure is also extended to a case wherein interference effects on a gable roof building by a similar building are studied. It is found that the Artificial Neural Network modelling is seen to predict successfully, the pressure coefficients for any roof slope that has not been covered by the experimental study. It is seen that ANN modelling can lead to a reduction of the wind tunnel testing effort for interference studies to almost half.
In recent decades, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have become the focus of considerable attention in many disciplines, including robot control, where they can be used to solve nonlinear control problems. One of these ANNs applications is that of the inverse kinematic problem, which is important in robot path planning. In this paper, a neural network is employed to analyse of inverse kinematics of PUMA 560 type robot. The neural network is designed to find exact kinematics of the robot. The neural network is a feedforward neural network (FNN). The FNN is trained with different types of learning algorithm for designing exact inverse model of the robot. The Unimation PUMA 560 is a robot with six degrees of freedom and rotational joints. Inverse neural network model of the robot is trained with different learning algorithms for finding exact model of the robot. From the simulation results, the proposed neural network has superior performance for modelling complex robot's kinematics.

One of the impacts of Covid-19 on education systems has been the shift to online education. This shift has changed the way education is consumed and perceived by students. However, the exact nature of student perception about online education is not known. The aim of this study was to understand the perceptions of Saudi higher education students (e.g., post-school students) about online education during the Covid-19 pandemic. Various aspects of online education including benefits, features and cybersecurity were explored. The data collected were analysed using statistical techniques, especially artificial neural networks, to address the research aims. The key findings were that benefits of online education was perceived by students with positive experience or when ensured of safe use of online platforms without the fear cyber security breaches for which recruitment of a cyber security officer was an important predictor. The issue of whether perception of online education as a necessity only for Covid situation or a lasting option beyond the pandemic is a topic for future research.
Methanol steam reforming (MSR) is a promising method for hydrogen supplying as a critical step in hydrogen fuel cell commercialization in mobile applications. Modelling and understanding of the reactor behavior is an attractive research field to develop an efficient reformer. Three-layer feed-forward artificial neural network (ANN) and Box-Behnken design (BBD) were used to modelling of MSR process using the Cu-SiO2 aerogel catalyst. Furthermore, impacts of the basic operational variables and their mutual interactions were studied. The results showed that the most affecting parameters were the reaction temperature (56%) and its quadratic term (20.5%). In addition, it was also found that the interaction between temperature and Steam/Methanol ratio is important on the MSR performance. These models precisely predict MSR performance and have great agreement with experimental results. However, on the basis of statistical criteria the ANN technique showed the greater modelling ability as compared with statistical BBD approach.

In practice, the design of forging processes is performed based on an experience-oriented technology, that is designer's experience and expensive trial and errors. Using the finite element simulation and the artificial neural network, we propose an optimal die geometry satisfying the design conditions of final product. A three-layer neural network is used and the back propagation algorithm is employed to train the network. An optimal die geometry that satisfied the same between inner extruded rib and outer extruded one is determined by applying the ability of function approximation of neural network. The neural networks may reduce the number of finite element simulation for determine the optimal die geometry of forging products and further they are usefully applied to physical modelling for the forging design.
Artificial neural networks were used for time series modelling of algal dynamics of whole year and by season at the Paldang dam station (confluence area). The modelling was based on comprehensive weekly water quality data from 1997 to 2004 at the Paldang dam station. The results of validation of seasonal models showed that the timing and magnitude of the observed chlorophyll a concentration was predicted better, compared with the ANN model for whole year. Internal weightings of the inputs in trained neural networks were obtained by sensitivity analysis for identification of the primary driving mechanisms in the system dynamics. pH, COD, TP determined most the dynamics of chlorophyll a, although these inputs were not the real driving variable for algal growth. Short-term prediction models that perform one or two weeks ahead predictions of chlorophyll a concentration were designed for the application of Harmful Algal Alert System in Lake Paldang. Short-term-ahead ANN models showed the possibilities of application of Harmful Algal Alert System after increasing ANN model's performance.

In order to measure the amount of carbon dioxide emitted from the construction sites, many literature which have been conducted have proposed methodologies for calculating coefficients based on actual data collections for estimating the emission formula. The existing data collected under controlled conditions not on site measurement were too limited to apply in actual sites. The purpose of this study is to conduct analysis based on the data measured in fields and to present predictive models using artificial neural network and nonlinear regression analysis for appropriate predictions and practical applications.
Dynamic compaction of Aluminum powder using gas detonation forming technique was investigated. The experiments were carried out on four different conditions of total pre-detonation pressure. The effects of the initial powder mass and grain particle size on the green density and strength of compacted specimens were investigated. The relationships between the mentioned powder design parameters and the final features of specimens were characterized using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models using the Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) algorithm were also developed to predict the green density and green strength of compacted specimens. Furthermore, the desirability function was employed for multi-objective optimization purposes. The obtained optimal solutions were verified with three new experiments and ANN models. The obtained experimental results corresponding to the best optimal setting with the desirability of 1 are 2714 kg·m-3 and 21.5 MPa for the green density and green strength, respectively, which are very close to the predicted values.
