In this study, we developed a whole cardiovascular system model combined with a Laplace heart based on the numerical cardiac cell model and a detailed arterial network structure. The present model incorporates the Laplace heart model and pulmonary model using the lumped parameter model with the distributed arterial system model. The Laplace heart plays a role of the pump consisted of the atrium and ventricle. We applied a cellular contraction model modulated by calcium concentration and action potential in the single cell. The numerical arterial model is based upon a numerical solution of the one-dimensional momentum equations and continuity equation of flow and vessel wall motion in a geometrically accurate branching network of the arterial system including energy losses at bifurcations. For validation of the present method, the computed pressure waves are compared with the existing experimental observations. Using the cell-system-arterial network combined model, the pathophysiological events from cells to arterial network are delineated.
A wireless optical fiber interferometer arterial pulse wave sensor system is developed for remote sensing. The wireless optical fiber sensor system consists of Zigbee communication modules and an optical fiber interferometer arterial pulse wave sensor. The optical fiber arterial pulse wave sensor is an in-line Michelson interferometer enclosed with steel reinforcement in a heat-shrinkable tube. The Zigbee communication modules are composed of an ATmega128L microprocessor and a CC2420 Zigbee chip. The arterial pulse waves detected by the optical fiber sensor were transmitted and received via the Zigbee communication modules. The experimental results show that the wireless optical fiber sensor system can be used for monitoring the arterial pulse waves remotely.
There are many things in common between hemodynamics in arterial systems and multibody dynamics in mechanical systems. Hemodynamics is concerned with the forces generated by the heart and the resulting motion of blood through the multi-branched vascular system. The conventional hemodynamics model has been intended to show the general behavior of the body arterial system with the frequency domain based linear model. The need for detailed models to analyze the local part like coronary arterial tree and cerebral arterial tree has been required recently. Non-linear analysis techniques are well-developed in multibody dynamics. In this paper, the studies of hemodynamics are summarized from the view of multibody dynamics. Computational algorithms of arterial tree analysis is derived, and proved by experiments on animals. The flow and pressure of each branch are calculated from the measured flow data at the ascending aorta. The simulated results of the carotid artery and the iliac artery show in good accordance with the measured results.

Generally, arterial pulse waves are measured at the radial arterial of wrist or carotid arterial of neck using a sensor such as pressure sensor, piezoelectric sensor or optic sensor. But in this paper, arterial pulse wave is measured at the temple using PZT piezo sensor which is attached on the temple in form of a hair-band. Arterial Pulse waves are generally measured when a reagent is in a static state. But in this paper, we implemented the arterial pulse wave measurement system, as a previous stage of the arterial pulse wave measurement system for running at outdoors or on a running machine, that measures arterial pulse waves at the temple, which is the least moving part when running. Thorough the continuous study, if the motion artifact when running is possible to be removed, the system will be able to perform monitoring of running men's states and especially emergency signals such as serious pulse waves of an/old and feeble persons and handicapped persons.
The main arterial which runs through the in City of Pusan, carries about 60% of downtown traffic or more, maintains about 20% yearly increase in traffic is severely suffering from the traffic congestion because of concentrated traffic volumes regardless of peak-time periods. The purpose of this study was to grasp the traffic, geometric, and signal conditions of the main arterial through the Videologging System Techniques, perform the transportation system analyses, and finally suggest the improvements which could increase the travel capacity, reduce the average delay and fuel consumption with the optimal conditions of signal system. The following conclusions were drawn : firstly the traffic system should be shifted for the travel distribution on the arterial during the peak time periods, secondly the roadway system of the arterial reviewed for left-turn traffic during the peak time periods, and thirdly the signal system of intersection reconstructed for signal optimization or progression within the range of cycle length suggested.
To investigate the endothelial dependence of angiotensin II(A II)-induced responses in the systemic and pulmonary arterial system of acute renal hypertensive rats of 2-kidney, 1-ligation type (RHRs), A II-induced vasocontractile and pressor effects were evaluated in isolated arteries and in vivo, respectively. A II dose-dependently contracted intact thoracic aorta and pulmonary artery (E$_{max}$:40% at 10$^{-7}$M and 80% at 3$\times$10 $^{-8}$M, respectively) from normotensive rats(NRs), which was significantly increased by removal of endothelial cells or pretreatment with EDRF inhibitors. In NRs, A II increased mean systemic and pulmonary arterial pressure(33 and 5.6mmHg at 0.1 $\mu\textrm{g}$/kg, respectively), the effect being significantly increased (P<0.01) by L-NAME(30mg/kg, i.v.). However, A II-induced contraction of intact thoracic aorta and pulmonary artery(E$_{max}$: 33% at 10$^{-7}$M and 93% at 3$\times$10$^{-8}$M, respectively) from RHRs were not changed after endothelial function was disrupted as above; similarly, pressor effects of A II on the systemic and pulmonary arterial pressure in RHRs did not altered by L-NAME. A II tachyphylactic responses for intact thoracic aorta from NRs and RHRs(65 and 87% at 10$^{-8}$M, respectively) were greater than those for pulmonary artery(19 and 19% at 10$^{-8}$M, respectively). Distruption of endothelial function significantly (P<0.01) depressed A II tachyphylaxis for thoracic aorta, but not for pulmonary artery. These results suggest that vascular reactivity to A II is not altered in RHRs, and it is greater for pulmonary arterial system than for systemic arterial system. A II reactivity is EDRF-dependent in both arterial systems of NRs, but EDRF-independent for RHRs. Finally, EDRF is one of the major factors underlying A II tachyphylaxis for thoracic aorta, but not for pulmonary artery.
To investigate the endothelium dependent vascular reactivity of the systemic arterial and the pulmonary arterial system in acute renal hypertensive rats of 2-kidney, 1-ligation type (RHRs), acetylcholine (ACh)-induced vasodilation and depressor effects were evaluated in isolated arteries and in vivo, respectively, in the presence and absence of functional endothelium. ACh $(10^{-5}\;M)$ relaxed the intact thoracic aortas from RHRs and normotensive rats (NRs), but the effect was significantly smaller for those from RHRs (34 and 86%, respectively, p<0.01). ACh-induced vasodilation was completely abolished after removal of endothelial cell or pretreatment with EDRF inhibitors, L-NAME and MB, indicative of its dependence on intact endothelial or EDRF function. ACh also induced vasorelaxation of the intact pulmonary arteries from RHRs and NRs; however, unlike the effects on the thorcic aorta, no significant difference in amplitude was noted between two groups. ACh $(0.1{\sim}10\;{\mu}g/kg,\;i.v.)$ reduced mean systemic arterial pressure in anesthetized RHRs and in NRs to the similar magnitude (% change: 39 and 46% at $10\;{\mu}g/kg$, respectively) and these hypotensive effects were significantly decreased after pretreatment with L-NAME (30 mg/kg, i.v.). Deprssor effects of ACh on mean pulmonary arterial pressure were similar in RHRs and NRs with and without pretreatment of L-NAME. However, in both NRs and RHRs, the depressor effects of ACh on mean pulmonary arterial pressure were significantly reduced compared with those for mean systemic arterial pressure, and the increment of mean pulmonary arterial pressure noted after L-NAME $(0.1{\mu}100\;mg/kg,\;i.v.)$ was significantly smaller than that for mean systemic arterial pressure. These results indicate that in RHRs the endothelial cell function was impaired, at least in part, in systemic arterial system, but not in pulmonary arterial system, and both ACh-evoked and basal release of EDRF was less in the pulmonary arterial system than in systemic arterial system of both NRs and RHRs.
In this paper, we propose a novel sensor system for measuring the arterial pulse in an oral cavity. In order to measure pulse wave in oral cavity, the proposed system is designed with reflection type arterial wave sensor, not by using transmission type arterial pulse wave sensor. Driving circuit through pulse current is designed for solving self-heating problem of LED. The effectiveness of the proposed sensor system is compared with pulse wave between pulse wave of oral cavity and other body parts as well as with characteristic measurements. The experiment shows that the proposed sensor system is adaptive to capturing consecutive and meaningful biometric signals through the variation of pulse wave changes in oral cavity when exercising. The study result expects to design and develop mobile sensors which could be adapted to healthcare devices.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate the usefulness of arterial subtraction images for predicting the viability of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after locoregional therapy (LRT) using gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI and the Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System treatment response (LR-TR) algorithm. Materials and Methods: This study included 90 patients (mean age ± standard deviation, 57 ± 9 years) who underwent liver transplantation or resection after LRT and had 73 viable and 32 nonviable HCCs. All patients underwent gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI before surgery. Two radiologists assessed the presence of LR-TR features, including arterial phase hyperenhancement (APHE) and LR-TR categories (viable, nonviable, or equivocal), using ordinary arterial-phase and arterial subtraction images. The reference standard for tumor viability was surgical pathology. The sensitivity of APHE for diagnosing viable HCC was compared between ordinary arterial-phase and arterial subtraction images. The sensitivity and specificity of the LR-TR algorithm for diagnosing viable HCC was compared between the use of ordinary arterial-phase and the use of arterial subtraction images. Subgroup analysis was performed on lesions treated with transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) only. Results: The sensitivity of APHE for viable HCCs was higher for arterial subtraction images than ordinary arterial-phase images (71.2% vs. 47.9%; p < 0.001). LR-TR viable category with the use of arterial subtraction images compared with ordinary arterial-phase images showed a significant increase in sensitivity (76.7% [56/73] vs. 63.0% [46/73]; p = 0.002) without significant decrease in specificity (90.6% [29/32] vs. 93.8% [30/32]; p > 0.999). In a subgroup of 63 lesions treated with TACE only, the use of arterial subtraction images showed a significant increase in sensitivity (81.4% [35/43] vs. 67.4% [29/43]; p = 0.031) without significant decrease in specificity (85.0% [17/20] vs. 90.0% [18/20]; p > 0.999). Conclusion: Use of arterial subtraction images compared with ordinary arterial-phase images improved the sensitivity while maintaining specificity for diagnosing viable HCC after LRT using gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI and the LR-TR algorithm.

Objectives: For the traditional pulse diagnosis in Oriental Medicine, not only the pulse shape in time domain, but the width, length and depth of arterial pulse also should be measured. However, conventional pulse diagnostic systems have failed to measure the spatial parameters of the arterial pulse e.g. effective length of arterial pulse in the wrist. In fact, there are many ways to measure that kind of spatial features in arterial pulsation, but among them, the method using image sensor provides relatively cheap and simple way, therefore I tested feasibility of measuring 2-dimensional pressure distribution by imaging devices. Methods: Using widely used PC cameras and dotted balloons, the subtle oscillation of skin over the radial artery was recorded continuously, and then the displacement of every dot was calculated. Consequently, the time course of that displacements shows arterial pulse wave. Results: By the proposed method I could get pressure distribution map with 30Hz sampling rate, 21steps quantization resolution, and approximately 1mm spatial resolution. With reduced quantization resolution, $3cm{\times}4cm$ view angle could be achieved. Conclusion: Although this method has some limitations, it would be useful method for detecting 2-dimensional features of arterial pulse, and accordingly, this method provides a novel way to detect 'narrow pulse', 'wide pulse', 'long pulse', 'short pulse', and their derivatives.
