  • This paper presents the results of multi-stress chamber experiments done to examine the tracking and erosion performance of polymer insulator. Multi-stress testing is able to demonstrate deficiencies of polymer insulator materials and designs including the nature of interfaces in insulation design. Therefore, multi-stress testing is believed to a suitable test for evaluating the aging performance of polymer insulator designs. We have investigated IEC 61109 Annex C for estimating long time performance of polymer insulator.

  • In distribution system about 5% of total outage is due to the lightning stroke. In order to reduce the rate of outage occurrence, distribution lightning protection equipments such as a secondary arrester, arching horn and various ground electrodes are developed and installed in the inside and outside of the county. Therefore it is needed to construct the test facilities to analyze the effect of these equipments. In this paper we describe the main content of the test facilities of lightning protection equipments. We have completed the field test of distribution lightning protection equipments for example lightning arrester, secondary arrester and arching horn etc.

  • This paper presents the frequency-dependent characteristics of leakage currents flowing through ZnO surge arrester block. The leakage current-voltage (I-V) characteristic curves of the commercial ZnO surge arrester blocks were measured. The resistive leakage current was found to increase with increasing frequency in the low conduction region. The capacitance of ZnO block was independent of the magnitude and frequency of the applied voltage. The power losses of ZnO block increase as the frequency of applied voltage increases, because of the dielectric loss related to the frequency of the test voltage.

  • This paper preserts the characteristics of leakage currents flowing through 18 kV zinc oxide (ZnO) surge arrester under the mixed DC and AC voltages. The I-V curves of ZnO surge arrester were measured as a function of the voltage ratio K The I-V curves under the mixed DC and AC voltages lay between the pure DC and AC characteristics, and the cross-over phenomenon in I-V curves was observed at the low current region As a result, the increase of DC component to mixed voltages causes the increase of resistive component of total leakage current th ZnO surge arrester.

  • This paper describes the voltage induced at neutral line and the proper location of lightning arrester in combined 22.9 kV class distribution line jointed overhead line and cable each other Modeling is established in ATP Draw to perform simulation. Simulated distribution line at this paper consists of distribution line 4.2km and underground distribution line 2km. Overvoltage and induced voltage are analyzed at several point of combined line. Analysis results was compared to select the best point to install arrester. Such analysis technology will be applied to obtaining capacity and location of arrester in the similar combined distribution line.

  • In this study, the size effect in measuring the fracture toughness of rock was investigated using the ISRM Suggested Method for Fracture toughness using Chevron Bend Specimens. Total 58 specimens were prepared with 4 different diameters, 29, 42, 54, 68mm and center cut-chevron notch. In addition to this, to evaluated the effect of anisotropy of Jecheon granite, which is the sample for this study, core drilling direction was adjusted perpendicular(short transverse) and parallel(arrester) to the rift plane in the sample and the measured fracture toughness for each direction were compared. Important results obtained from this study are as follows. Level ll test condition is more adequate than l, because of low data scattering and precision and corrected fracture toughness of Jechoen granite measured and 2.2MPa{{{{ SQRT { m} }}}} for arrester direction with minimum initial crack length 0.7cm. From the relationship between core diameter and initial crack length presented in the ISRM testing method, the specimen diameter should be bigger than 47mm. The fracture toughnesses measured for arrester and short transverse directon show 10% difference. This is to the anisotropy of Jecheon granite possessing rift plane.

  • This paper provides the results of analysis of lightening arrester failed in the field. XRD was used for qualitative analysis and SEM for microstructure analysis of zinc oxide (ZnO) block. The failure of lightening arrester might occur due to the following reasons: the uneven size of zinc oxide grains and cement layers. the re-crystallization of zinc oxide grains resulting from electrical stress around impurities, and the presence of too large pores($\simeq$ 50 ${\mu}m$).

  • In this study, dynamic characteristics of water hammer pressure in water supply piping system with water hammer arrester has been investigated experimentally to characterize the transient pressure of water hammer in high rise building. Experiments were conducted to verify the absorption effects by water hammer arresters with 3 different gas volumes of water hammer pressure generated by sudden valve closure. As the results, it has been found that zoning and sizing of pipe diameter for suitable flow velocity and water hammer arresters with effective pressure absorption capacity have to be installed to protect water hammer problems in building water supply piping system.

  • In this paper, the results of development of arrester leakage current detector using micro computer are described. This detector is based on harmonic analysis of the leakage current by FFT. The change of leakage current is the recognized measure of deterioration. For low sensitivity to disturbance, this device used optical fiber. This will be a great benefit of detecting deterioration ZnO arrester.

  • This paper describes a new measurement method of resistive current and the technique of deterioration diagnosis for ZnO element. The consequence of current increasing (resistive current) with time is the eventual attainment of a state of thermal instability that may lead to arrester failure. So, it is very important to measure a leakage current of ZnO arrester installed at on-state. For the high-precision and more reliability, an iron core, which has a very high relative permeability, was used for increasing detection sensitivity, and we also used the personal computer for the data storage and program and analysis. And we have verified the reliability and performance of the sensing device through several laboratory tests.
