We interpreted marine seismic profiles in conjunction with swath bathymetric and magnetic data to investigate rifting to breakup processes at the eastern Korean margin that led to the separation of the southwestern Japan Arc. Analysis of rift fault patterns suggests that rifting at the Korean margin was primarily controlled by normal faulting resulting from extension rather than strike-slip deformation. Two extension directions of E-W and NW-SE for rifting are recognized. We interpret that the E-W direction represents initial rifting at the inner margin and the NW-SE direction probably represents the extension in response to tensional tectonics associated with the subduction of the Pacific Plate in the NW direction. No significant volcanism was involved in rifting. In contrast, the inception of sea floor spreading documents a pronounced volcanic phase which appears to reflect asthenospheric upwelling as well as rift-induced convection particularly in the narrow southern margin. We suggest that structural and igneous evolution of the Korean margin, although it is in a back-arc setting, can be explained by the processes occurring at the passive continental margin with magmatism influenced by asthenospheric upwelling.

Low voltage circuit breakers are widely used in power distribution systems to interrupt fault current rapidly and to assure the reliability of the power supply. This paper is focused on understanding the interrupting capability, more specifically of the contacts and the arc runner, based on the shape of the contact system in the current molded case circuit breaker (hereafter MCCB). Moreover, in order to improve the interrupting capability of the circuit breaker, the estimation and analysis of the interrupting capability, based on the 3-D magnetic flux analysis, were developed. Furthermore, this paper also presents results of the estimation and analysis of the interrupting capability when applied to different model breakers. In addition, this paper analyzes the efficiency of the interrupting tests by forming false current paths consisting of a three-division cascade arc runner in the contact system. With regards to the interrupting test, there is a need to assure that the optimum design required to analyze the electromagnetic forces of the contact system generated by the current and flux density be present. Based on the results of this study, this paper presents both computational analysis and test results for the newly developed MCCB 460V/225A/50㎄ contact system.
An essential step for SERGI is to show the TRANSFORMER PROTECTOR (TP) efficacy for all transformers and all types of rupture of insulation. Its research program philosophy is thus to maintain a strong connection between experiments and the theoretical developments. Up to now, two TP test campaigns have been performed, both under the worst conditions by creating low impedance faults leading to electrical arcs inside the transformer tank dielectric oil. In 2002, Electricite de France performed 28 TP tests. Then, in 2004, a second campaign of 34 TP tests was carried out by CEPEL, the Brazilian independent High Voltage Laboratory. For the 62 tests, each transformer was equipped with the TP, which reacts directly to the moving dynamic pressure peak, shock wave, caused by the low impedance fault. When an electrical arc occurs, only one pressure peak is generated. The initial energy transfer is almost instantaneous, and so is the phase change. Because of the oil inertia, the gas is very quickly pressurised. As it is more difficult to vaporise a liquid than to crack oil-vapour into smaller molecules, the arc location would mainly remain in the gaseous phase after and less gas will be produced. As a result, when comparing tests for which pressure peaks are respectively equal to 8 bar (116 psi) and 8.8 bar (127 psi), the corresponding arc energies vary by an order 10 of magnitude (0.1 MJ and 1 MJ respectively). The correlation of the results obtained between arc energy and dynamic pressure demonstrates that the arc energy is not the key parameter during transformer tank explosion, which is in opposition with the common electrical engineers belief.
With the increasing utilization of high-voltage, direct current (HVDC) transmissions in modern power systems, the DC grid is becoming a hot topic in academic and practical systems. In the DC grid, one of the urgent problems is the fast clearance of the DC fault in the DC network. One preferred method is to isolate the faulty point from the DC network in a short time. The DC circuit breaker is to interrupt the overcurrent after DC faults occur. In this paper, a self-excited resonant DC circuit breaker is an easy and cheap equipment to interrupt the DC fault current. The Mayr's arc model is utilized to simulate the self-excited DC circuit breaker in a DC test system in PSCAD/EMTDC.
Recently high impedance fault(HIF), which includes arcing wave, has often occured in power system. Some papers related to arcing phenomena and its modeling have been published. However the proposed methods show much different form in compare with actual arc wave under HIF. It is not so available to use to analyze HIF because of such problem. This paper proposes the new arcing wave model, which is nearly similar to actual arcing wave, developed using PSCAD/EMTDC. The arcing waves obtained from arcing model that applied in actual. power system are compared with some actual arcing wave gained from the field test and show the availability to application of relay test.
Insulators of 154kV T/L have been frequently damaged by fault currents. Arcing horn is a very effective and economic method for protection of insulators from the flashover. We developed arcing horns for 154kV T/L in order to protect insulators from the arc[1]. This paper analyzes the status of insulator failures in 154kV T/L after installation of the arcing horns.
