The purpose of this study is to consider the interaction between surface water and groundwater in basin scale by developing TANK_GS model. The soil moisture structure of tank model with 3 tanks is improved to simulate the appropriate stream-aquifer interactions. Maximum likelihood method is applied to calibrate parameters with variance functions to deal with heteroscedasticity of residuals. The parameters of improved TANK_GS model and variance function are simultaneously estimated by Simulated Annealing method, a global optimization technique. The results of TANK-GE are compared to those of the SWMM-GE model which had been developed to consider the stream-aquifer interactions. The new TANK_GS model and SWMM-GE model are applied to Gapcheon basin, which belongs to Geum River basin. TANK_GS model showed better model performance compared to the original TANK model and characterized the relationship of stream-aquifer interactions as satisfactorily as the SWMM-GE model. The sustainable groundwater yield can be estimated for the regional water resources planning using the TANK_GS model
Present study deals with the development of a numerical model for the estimation of net annual recharge by coupling the Galerkin's finite element flow simulationl model with the Gauss-Newton-Marquardt optimization technique. The developed coupled numerical model is applied for estimating net annual recharge for Mahi Right Bank Canal (MRBC) project the norms of Groundwater Resources Estimation committee (1984, 1997) and Indian Agricultural research Institute(1983). It is observed that the estimated net recharge by inverse modeling is closer to the net recharge estimated using the water balance approach. Further it is observed that the computed head distribution from the estimated recharge agree closely with the observed head distribution. The study concludes that the developed model for inverse modeling can be successfully applied to large groundwater system involving regional aquifers where reliable recharge estimation always requires considerable time and financial resources.
A new nonstationary dual-porosity fractal model is presented which simulates a nonsteady state block-to-fissure flow with or without fracture skin between the block and the fissure in a fractal aquifer. The model includes weilbore storage and well loss effects on the production well. Type curves for different flow dimensions with different values of hydraulic parameters are created. The application of the model to experimental data in fractured aquifer is described.

Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) is a technique in which secondary- or tertiary-treated wastewater is infiltrated through unsaturated soil and stored in the saturated zone. In SAT, contaminants are removed by physical and biochemical reactions taking place in soils. In this study, a numerical model was developed to predict changes in water quality during SAT operations. The contaminant species considered in the model were ammonium, nitrate, dissolved organic carbon, and dissolved oxygen. The model was calibrated against experimental data obtained from one dimensional soil column tests conducted for 84 days. The calibrated model will be used to find out optimum conditions for the pilot- and regional-scale SAT operations to be scheduled for the next phase of this project.
The validation of a groundwater source heat pump system installation site is estimated by bydrogeothermic model ing. The hydraulic characteristics of the aquifer system is evaluated from pumping and recovery tests. In addition, the temperature distribution by the pumping and the injection of groundwater, and water level fluctuations are simulated by numerical modeling. The total cooling and heating load for the building is designed as 120RT(refrigeration ton) and the ground water source heat pump system covers 50RT as a subsidiary system The scenario of heat pump operation is organized as pumping and inject ion of groundwater that is performed for 8 hours per day in cooling mode for 90 days during the summer season The heat transfer by the injected warm water is limited near the inject ion wells in the simulated temperature distribution. The reason is that the given operation time is too short to expect broad thermal diffusion in large volume of the aquifer in the simulation time The simulated groundwater level and temperature distribution can be used as important data to develope an energy effective pumping and injection well system. Also it will be very useful to evaluate the hydraulic capacity of a target groundwater reservoir.
To analyze the anisotropic characteristics of fractured aquifer, variations of streaming potential were measured during and after pumping over several wells at the two test sites. Surface electrical resistivity survey, normal resistivity logging, and slug test were performed at the wells to identify the hydrogeological structure. Applying the results to the recently suggested model, the aquifer of the two test sites showed confined characteristics. Anisotropic direction appeared in using equi-potential maps from self-potential monitoring results matched well with the results of the hydrogeological test. The self-potential monitoring method adopted in this study would be useful for providing a more reliable information on the anisotropy of aquifer in the pumping test at single well.
The MODFLOW simulated results with varying input parameter values were compared and analyzed. To understand the relative importance of the input parameters, sensitivity analysis was carried out. The amount of sustainable yield was analyzed with respect to the hydraulic conductivity, specific yield, specific storage, aquifer thickness and the distance of the wells from the river. The results of sensitivity analysis showed that inflow from the river and the aquifer storage were sensitive to the specific yield and aquifer thickness. Sustainable yield was sensitive to the hydraulic conductivity and aquifer thickness. The results of this study can be used as a basic information for groundwater development and management plannings considering regional characteristics.

The application of Terzaghi's theory of consolidation for analysing the settlement of multi-layered soils is not strictly valid because the theory involves an assumption that the soil is homogeneous. The settlement of stratified soils with confined aquifer can be analysed using numerical techniques whereby the governing differential equation is replaced by 2-dimensional finite difference approximations. The problems of discontinuous layer interface are very important in the algorithm and programming for the analysis of multi-layered consolidation using a numerical analysis, finite difference method(F.D.M.). Better results can be obtained by the process for discontinuous layer interface, since it can help consolidation analysis to model the actual ground The purpose of this paper provides an efficient computer algorithm based on numerical analysis using finite difference method(F.D.M) which account for multi-layered soils with confined aquifer to determine the degree of consolidation and excess pore pressures relative to time and positions more realistically.
This paper studies the problem of an infinite confined aquifer which at time t < 0 is assumed motionless. At time t = 0 crude oil seeps into the aquifer, thereby contaminating the valuable drinking water. Since the crude oil and water are im-miscible, the problem is posed as a one-dimensional two-phase unsteady moving boundary problem. A similarity solution is developed in which the moving front parameter is obtained by Newton-Ralphson iteration. A numerical scheme, involving the front tracking method, is devised employing the fourth order Runge-Kutta method. Comparison of the exact and numerical schemes shows an error of only 3%. Thus the developed numerical scheme is quite accurate in tackling more realistic problems where exact solutions are not possible.
In this study, the applicability of the geostatistical evolution strategy as an inverse analysis method of estimating hydraulic properties of small-scale basin was tested. The geostatistical evolution strategy is a type of data assimilation method that can effectively estimate aquifer hydraulic conductivity by combining a global optimization model of the evolution strategy and a local optimization model of the ensemble Kalman filtering. In the applicability test, the geometry, hydraulic boundary conditions, and the distribution of groundwater monitoring wells of Hanlim-Eup were employed. On the other hand, a synthetic hydraulic conductivity distribution was generated and used as the reference property for ease of estimation quality assessment. In the estimations, two different cases were tested where, in Case I, both groundwater levels and hydraulic conductivity measurements were assumed to be available, and only the groundwater levels were available, in Case II. In both cases, the reference and estimated hydraulic conductivity fields were found to show reasonable similarity, even though the prior information for estimation was not accurate. The ability to estimate hydraulic conductivity without accurate prior information suggests that this method can be used effectively to estimate mathematical properties in real-world cases, many of which little prior information is available for the aquifer conditions.
