Administration and use of aquaculture drugs in Korea (국내 수산용 의약품의 사용과 관리 현황)

  • Aquaculture drugs have used to prevent disease in aquaculture field for many years. In spite of many advantages, overdose and abuse may cause environmental pollutions and antibiotic resistances. Many countries try to protect the environment, biospecies and food safety. Recently, Korea enact laws and ordinances such as the Aquatic Animal Disease Control Act. The purpose of this act to contribute to the stable production and control system for aquatic diseases. The Maximum residue limits (MRLs) of aquaculture drugs have been established by Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) and Drug licensing was in National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) by Aquatic Animal Disease Control Act. There is 750 items in aquaculture drugs and these are classified into 4 group, which is approval, necessary for prescription, unregulated and safety drug, and banned drug. MRLs of 30 items in aquaculture drug have been established by Food Sanitation Act. Future research is required to determine the suitable for abundant varied fishes of drugs for side effects and safety.

Evaluation of extruded pellet for growth performance of olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus in Jeju farm field (제주도 넙치 양식현장에서 배합사료 성장 평가)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate extruded pellet (EP) diet compared with a raw fish moist pellet (MP) diet for flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus on field feeding experiments in Jeju area. The experimental EP diet (juvenile, growing and adult) was prepared based on the former studies on nutrient requirements and feed ingredient of flounder. Fish were distributed randomly to each aquarium as a group of 102,300 fish (initial mean weight 97 g) in field experiment I and reared randomly to each aquarium as a group of 40,000 fish (initial mean weight 120 g) in field experiment II. In field feeding experiment I conducted in commercial flounder farm, survival, wt. gain (94-1,090 g), feed efficiency and condition factor of fish fed experimental EP were comparable to those of fish fed MP, but considerably higher protein efficiency ratio were observed in fish fed experimental EP. In field feeding experiment II, no significant difference was observed in final mean weight of fish fed the experimental EP (1,234 g) and MP (1,286 g), and any noticeable problem caused by feeding the experimental EP was not found during the whole period of feeding trial. Survival of fish fed the experimental EP was lower than that of MP, and there was no significant difference in feed efficiency between the fish fed experimental EP and MP. Therefore, these results strongly suggest that diet EP could be developed to replace MP diet for the marketable size (1.3 kg) of production for flounder without adverse effects on growth performance. In particular, abdominal dropsy and reduction of condition factor, which are frequently occurred in commercial EP feeding farms, were not observed in flounder fed experimental EP.

  • The Group Digital Surveillance System for Fishery Safety and Security (GDSS-F2S) is to provide the target tracking information and the target identification information in order to secure an huge aquaculture farm-field from a thief. The two information, however, is not enough to indict the thief due to the lack of lawful evidences for the crime actions. To overcome this problem, we consider the target image information as one of solutions after discussion with the effective countermeasure tools for the crime actions with scenario-based analysis according to the geological feature of aquaculture farm-field. To capture the real-time image for the trespassing targets in the aquaculture farm-field area, we developed the image capture system which is consists of ultra sensitive CCD(Charge-Coupled Device) camera with 0.0001 Lux and supplementary devices. As results from the field tests for GDSS-F2S with image capture system, the high definite images of the vehicle number plate and shape, person's actions and features are obtainable not only day time but also very dark night without moon light. Thus it is cleary known that the improved GDSS-F2S with image capture system can provide much enough lawful evidences for the crime actions of targets.

Identification of bacteria isolated from rockworm viscera and application of isolated bacteria to shrimp aquaculture wastewater treatment

  • Large amounts of waste and wastewater from aquaculture have negatively impacted ecosystems. Among them, shrimp aquaculture wastewater contains large amounts of nitrogen contaminants derived from feed residues in an aerobic environment. This study isolated candidate strains from adult rockworms to treat shrimp aquaculture wastewater (SAW) in an aerobic environment. Among 87 strains isolated, 25 grew well at the same temperature as the shrimp aquaculture with excellent polymer degradation ability (>0.5 cm clear zone). Six isolates (strains AL1, AL4, AL5, AL6, LA10, and PR15) were finally selected after combining strains with excellent polymer degradation ability without antagonism. 16S rRNA sequencing analysis revealed that strains AL1, AL4, AL5, AL6, LA10, and PR15 were closely related to Bacillus paramycoides, Bacillus pumilus, Stenotrophomonas rhizophila, Bacillus paranthracis, Bacillus paranthracis, and Micrococcus luteus, respectively. When these six isolates were applied to SAW, they reached a maximum cell viability of 2.06×105 CFU mL-1. Their chemical oxygen demand (CODCr) and total nitrogen(TN) removal rates for 12h were 51.0% and 44.6%, respectively, when the CODCr/TN ratio was approximately 10.0. Considering these removal rates achieved in this study under batch conditions, these six isolates could be used for aerobic denitrification. Consequently, these six isolates from rockworms are good candidates that can be applied to the field of aquaculture wastewater treatment.

Livelihood Risk Reduction for Artisanal Fisheries Communities due to Climate Change in Coastal Area of Bangladesh (방글라데시 해안지대 기후변화에 따른 영세 어업인 생계 위험 경감 방안)

  • This study aimed to suggest an alternative income generation (AIG) for local artisanal fisheries communities in the southern coastal area of Bangladesh, which is vulnerable to climate change. To analyze the problems of local artisanal fisheries caused by climate change, field surveys and in-depth interviews with fishermen and government officials were conducted. Livelihood risk factor (LRF) in the marine fishing sector included reduction of fishing days and fish production and damage to fishing vessels and fishing gear due to cyclone and sea-level rise. LRF in the aquaculture sector included cultured fish escape, reduction of aquaculture production, and water pollution due to Monsoon flood. A common challenge for two sectors was high interest rate on commercial loans. Small-scale tank aquaculture is recommended as AIG for securing income of artisanal fisheries communities. In the early stages of dissemination of small-scale tank aquaculture technology, it is necessary to prevent fishermen from struggling to repay high-interest rate loans through technology transfer and facility support by official development assistance. The aquaculture training center, along with the technical education, will also contribute toward expansion of local distribution network and marketing support to establish a value chain for local artisanal fisheries communities.

Survival and growth of the red tide organism Cochlodinium polykrikoides after the addition of yellow loess

  • At least 15% of the C polykrikoides cells that precipitated to the bottom layer either by the addition of loess or no addition survived for 1 week at all growth phases, rather than disappearing immediately after precipitating. However, no live cells were observed after 20 days, regardless of phase or loess addition. In the exponential phase, the number of C polykrikoides cells increased to >2886 cells/ml after loess was added. However, in the stationary phase, the number of cells did not increase until 18 days. In the exponential phase, those C polykrikoides that survived precipitation caused by scattering loess on cultures did not appear to have the ability to cause red tides again because of the short red tide periods in the field, long lag time after loess addition, and low survival rate after loess addition.

Analysis of land-based circular aquaculture tank flow field using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation (전산 유체 역학(CFD)을 이용한 원형 양식 사육 수조 내부 유동장 해석)

  • The objectives of this study were to develop the optimal structures of recirculating aquaculture tank for improving the removal efficiency of solid materials and maintaining water quality conditions. Flow analysis was performed using the CFD (computational fluid dynamics) method to understand the hydrodynamic characteristics of the circular tank according to the angle of inclination in the tank bottom (0°, 1.5° and 3°), circulating water inflow method (underwater, horizontal nozzle, vertical nozzle and combination nozzle) and the number of inlets. As the angle in tank bottom increased, the vortex inside the tank decreased, resulting in a constant flow. In the case of the vertical nozzle type, the eddy flow in the tank was greatly improved. The vertical nozzle type showed excellent flow such as constant flow velocity distribution and uniform streamline. The combination nozzle type also showed an internal spiral flow, but the vortex reduction effect was less than the vertical nozzle type. As the number of inlets in the tank increased, problems such as speed reduction were compensated, resulting in uniform fluid flow.

Oomycete pathogens, red algal defense mechanisms and control measures

  • Oomycete pathogens are one of the most serious threats to the rapidly growing global algae aquaculture industry but research into how they spread and how algae respond to infection is unresolved, let alone a proper classification of the pathogens. Even the taxonomy of the genera Pythium and Olpidiopsis, which contain the most economically damaging pathogens in red algal aquaculture, and are among the best studied, needs urgent clarification, as existing morphological classifications and molecular evidence are often inconsistent. Recent studies have reported a number of genes involved in defense responses against oomycete pathogens in red algae, including pattern-triggered immunity and effector-triggered immunity. Accumulating evidence also suggests that calcium-mediated reactive oxygen species signaling plays an important role in the response of red algae to oomycete pathogens. Current management strategies to control oomycete pathogens in aquaculture are based on the high resistance of red algae to abiotic stress, these have environmental consequences and are not fully effective. Here, we compile a revised list of oomycete pathogens known to infect marine red algae and outline the current taxonomic situation. We also review recent research on the molecular and cellular responses of red algae to oomycete infection that has only recently begun, and outline the methods currently used to control disease in the field.

A Study of the Development of a Concrete Floating Breakwater for an Open Sea Fish Farm (외해 양식장 콘크리트 부유식 방파제 개발에 관한 연구)

  • The ecological changes in the ocean due to the drastic global warming require that action be taken to sustain the productivity of fisheries. Proper ocean facilities could help prevent the loss of the expenditures made on marine aquaculture and reduce the related compensation for various ocean conditions. The aim of this study was to develop a floating ocean wave-breaker using an eco-friendly concrete and conducting a site survey, a structural analysis, and a test of towing the tank. As a result, the wave at the fish farm would be reduced. The results of the holding power of anchors and the capability of moving the floating structures were considered in the design of the wave-breaker. The analyses of the material properties of concrete and the steel structures, as well as the CAPEX and OPEX analyses of the manufacturing and operation processes confirmed the superiority of the floating concrete wave-breaker. In particular, this study demonstrated that the concrete floating breakwater can protect the fish farm against typhoons and reverse-waves, thereby reducing losses of the fish.

A Study on the Building of Tuna Farming in Floating Offshore Wind Power Generation Field at East Sea (동해 부유식 해상풍력발전단지 내 참다랑어 양식장 조성에 관한 연구)

  • We need measures that can come up with alternative about fishery living zone and enhance local acceptance for responding to the increase in the proportion of renewable energy production and construction of 12GW Offshore wind power according to Korea's Renewable Energy 3020 initiative and Korean-version New Deal. In this study, We suggest that differentiation plans of co-location model in connection with offshore wind power generation suitable for the East Sea. The East Sea is an optimal site for building of a floating offshore wind power generation(FOWPG) field. It is expected that economic effects like energy production, aquatic resource development and tourism industrialization by farming bluefin tuna which is high valued fish and suitable for offshore aquaculture on public waters in FOWPG field. And we can confirm that budget reduction, smart management by sharing operation management technology and increase in fishermen income.
