  • Two major processes that affect the vertical distribution of apparent pH in the Subarctic region of the Northeastern Pacific Ocean are (1) apparent oxygen utilization by marine organisms and (2) carbonate dissolution. Simplified mathematical approximations show that, in the pH ravge of 7.2 to 8.3, the utilization of 0.1 mM of oxygen (2.24 ml/liter) lowers the pH by 0.20 units and 0.1 mM of carbonate dissolution increases the pH by 0.25 units. Since Oxygen utilization exceeds 0.3 mM while the carbonate dissolution, with respect to the surface, is about 0.05mM, the effect of oxygen utilization is much greater than the dissolution effect of carbonate on the pH of seawater.

  • In the summer of 2008 (August 4-14), vertical and horizontal distributions of inorganic nutrients and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were measured in the southwestern East Sea. Concentrations of DOC were determined for the first time in the southwestern East Sea using the high-temperature combustion oxidation (HTCO) method, and results were compared with those measured by another laboratory. Concentrations of DOC ranged from 58 to 104 ${\mu}M$ in the upper 200 m, showing a typical decreasing pattern with depth. Generally, concentrations of DOC were relatively lower, with higher nutrient concentrations, in the upper layer of the coastal upwelling zone. Concentrations of DOC ranged from 54 to 64 ${\mu}M$ in the deep Ulleung Basin (200-1500 m), and were higher than those in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. In association with rapid vertical ventilation of the euphotic, this difference indicates a larger accumulation of semi-labile DOC in the deep East Sea than in the major oceans. A correlation between apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) and DOC in the deep ocean of the East Sea revealed that only a small portion (<10%) of the sinking DOC, relative to the sinking particulate organic carbon (POC), contributes to microbial degradation. Our results present an important data set of DOC in the East Sea, which plays a critical role in carbon cycle modeling and sequestration.

  • The samples for organic carbon analysis were collected between $5^{\circ}\;and\;17^{\circ}N$ along $131.5^{\circ}W$ in the northeast Pacific KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Study) area. The mean concentration of total organic carbon (TOC) in the surface mixed layer $({\sim}50 m)$ was $100.13{\pm}2.05{\mu}M-C$, while the mean concentration of TOC in the lower 500m of the water column was $50.19{\pm}4.23{\mu}M-C$. A strong linear regression between TOC and temperature $(r^2=0.70)$ showed that TOC distribution was controlled by physical process. Results from the linear regression between chlorophyll-a and TOC, and between chlorophyll-a and particulate organic carbon (POC), decreasing of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the surface layer caused by non-biological photo-oxidation process. Below the surface layer, biological production and consumption occurred. DOC accumulation dominated in the depth range of $30{\sim}50m$ and DOC consumption occurred in the depth range of $50{\sim}200m$. TOC was inversely correlated with apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) and TOC/AOU molar ratios ranged from -0.077 to -0.21. These ratios indicated that TOC oxidation was responsible fur $10.9{\sim}30.1%$ (mean 20.2%) of oxygen consumption in the NE Pacific KODOS area. In the euphotic zone, distributions of dissolved and particulate organic matter were controlled by photo-chemical, chemical, biological and physical processes.

  • Sing]e-well-push-pull tests were developed for use in assessing the feasibility of in-situ aerobic cometabolism of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs). The series includes Transport tests, Biostimulation tests, and Activity tests. Transport tests are conducted to evaluate the mobility of solutes used in subsequent tests. These included bromide or chloride (conservative tracers), propane (growth substrate), ethylene, propylene (CAH surrogates), dissolved oxygen (electron acceptor) and nitrate (a minor nutrient). Tests were conducted at an experimental well field of Oregon State University. At this site, extraction phase breakthrough curves for all solutes were similar, indicating apparent conservative transport of the dissolved gases and nitrate prior to biostimulation. Biostimulation tests were conducted to stimulate propane-utilizing activity of indigenous microorganisms and consisted of sequential injections of site groundwater containing dissolved propane and oxygen. Biostimulation was detected by the increase in rates of propane and oxygen utilization after each injection. Activity tests were conducted to quantify rates of substrate utilization and to confirm that CAH-transforming activity had been stimulated. In particular, the transformation of injected CAH surrogates ethylene and propylene to the cometabolic byproducts ethylene oxide and propylene oxide provided evidence that activity of the monooxygenase enzyme system, responsible for aerobic cometabolic transformations of CAHs had been stimulated. Estimated zero-order transformation rates decreased in the order propane > ethylene > propylene. The series of push-pu3l tests developed and field tested in this study should prove useful for conducting rapid, low-cost feasibility assessments for in situ aerobic cometabolism of CAHs.

  • The oxygen utilization rate (OUR) is one of the crucial parameters for ocean carbon cycling and climate models. However, parameterization of OUR in the East Sea (Sea of Japan) is yet to be established. We estimated the basin-specific OURs in the East Sea and fitted them with exponential functions with depth by using pCFC- 12 age and apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) measured in summer 1999. The estimated OURs are higher in the upper water column and decrease with depth, in general. The vertical distributions of the estimated OURs in the Western and Eastern Japan Basins (WJB & EJB) are very similar. The OURs in the Ulleung Basin (UB) varied greatly depending on whether the surface layer (0~200 m) data are included in the OUR estimate or not. Apparently, weaker oxygen consumption occurs in the deep layer of Yamato Basin (YB). The ranges of the OURs between 200 m and 2000 m at WJB, EJB, UB, and YB are 8.15~0.83, 8.11~0.68, 5.29~0.73, and 7.31~0.06 ${\mu}mol$ $kg^{-1}$ $yr^{-1}$, respectively. Consideration of the wintertime surface water oxygen disequilibrium condition in estimating the OUR will be necessary in the future study.

  • A study on the variational characteristics of water quality and phytoplankton biomass by principal component analysis(PCA) was carried out in Kogum-sudo from February to October in 1993. We analyzed PCA on biological factors such as chlorophyll a and phytoplankton cell numbers for centric and pennate diatoms, phytoflagellates, and total phytoplankton as well as physico-chemical factors as water temperature, salinity, transparency, dissolved oxygen(DO), saturation of DO, apparent oxygen utilization (AOU), chemical oxygen demand(COD), nutrient (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate and silicate), N/P ratio and suspended solid(SS). The source of nutrients supply depended on the mineralization of organic matters and inputs of seawater from outside rather than runoff of freshwater. The phytoplankton biomass was changed within short interval period by nutrients change. And it was controlled by the combination of several environmental factors, especially of light intensity, ammonia and phosphate. The marine environmental characteristics were determined by the mineralization of organic matters in winter, by runoff of freshwater including high nutrients concentration in spring, by ammonia uptake and high phytoplankton productivity in summer, and phosphate supplied input seawater from outside of Kogeum-sudo in autumn. And Kogum-sudo was separated with 2 regions by score distributions of PCA. That is to say, one region was middle parts of straits which was characterized by the mixing seawater and the accumulated organic matters, other one region was Pungnam Bay and the water around Kogum Island which was done by high phytoplankyon biomass and productivity year-round.

  • A synoptic survey of chemical properties was carried out at 21 stations in the Ulleung Basin in May 1988 on board T/V HANBADA. Vertical structures of typical profiles are: surface mixedlayer waters in the upper 30∼40 m with depleted nutrients concentrations, thermocline waters with rapid variations in all physical and chemical properties. and deep Waters below 200 m which are nearly homogeneous. Along the northern section at 37$^{\circ}$12'N. The salinity minimum layer was observed at about 190m. which characterize the East Sea Intermediate Water (ESIW). The dissolved oxygen concentration in this layer was about 230∼ 275uM, lower than 290uM (6.5ml/l) which is the previously known characteristics of the ESIW. However, apparent oxygen utilization (AOU), nitrate, phosphate and silicate show systematically low concentration in the salinity-minimum layer. The low values of AOU and all the nutrients associated with the salinity-minimum, may be useful to identify the ESIW and serve as a new tracer in the East Sea.

  • Electrodes using for the anode electrode of direct methanol fuel cell with Pt/C and Pt/Ru/C catalyst were prepared and characterized by SEM, TEM, thermal analysis and electrochemical analysis. The half cell tests were carried out with 1 M $H_2SO_4$ electrolyte and 1 M $CH_3OH$ in order to evaluate the electrode performance. The employed electrochemical methods were cyclic vol-tammetry and potentiodynamic polarization experiments. It was found that 20 w% polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) content in catalyst showed the best performance due to the best platinum utilization on PTFE-containing catalyst layer. It was found that Pt/Ru/C binary catalyst inhibited the poisoning of anode electrode showing improved performance compared to the Pt/C catalyst by the adsorption of oxygen containing species on the electrode surface at same time. The apparent activation energy for methanol oxidation on the Pt/Ru/C and Pt/C catalyst layer was 11.60 kJ/mol and 26.85 kJ/mol, respectively.

  • In order to investigate the distribution of the last Sea Intermediate Water (ESIW), CTD measurement was peformed in the last Sea of Korea during $8\~11$ November, 1994. ESIW was $2.0\~2.3^{\circ}C$ in potential temperature, $34.04\~34.06\%_{\circ}$ in salinity and $5.6\~6.1\;ml/l$ in of gen content on the isopycnic surface of 27.2 in potential density. The isopycnic surface of 27.2 which represented the layer of ESIW became shallower from about 200 m depth in the open sea to about 140 m depth near the coast. off the coast of Jukbyun, the 27.2 isopycnic surface was located at the depth of about 120 m and had a little higher potential temperature and salinity, lower oxygen content than those in the open sea. The ESIW on the continental shelf was higher about 0.8 ml/l in AOU, 0.02 in salinity than those of the ESIW in the open sea. These suggest that the ESIW on the continental shelf did not come from the North Korean Cold Water but originated from the open sea.

  • The Keum River Estuary was investigated two times in April and July, 1986, to study process controlling chlorophyll distribution in estuarine waters. During the surveys, distribution patterns were studied for chlorophyll-a, nutrients, ph, SPM (Suspended Particulate Matter), DO (Dissolved Oxygen), temperature, salinity, etc. During April survey(low-discharge period), sea water penetrated to Kangkyung, about 35km upstream from the constructing weir, while in July (high-discharge period) only to 3 km upstream from the weir,In April SPM showed very high concentrations (500mg/l)on the average. But very low concentrations(about10mg/l)were observed in July due to high discharge of fresh water.Chlorophyll-a concentrations showed large variations both in time and space :much higher concentraations in July than in April and sharp decrease in concentrations at the fresh water-sea water interface (April:$6.5\mu\textrm{g}/{\ell}$ for fresh waters and 41.4\mu\textrm{g}/{\ell}$ forestuarine waters). Differebce ub chlorophyll-a concentrations for these two surveys appear to be caused mainly by the difference in effectiveness of penetrating lights controlled by SPM in the waters. Sharp decrease in chlorophll-a at the fresh water-sea water interface is believed to be resulted from mass mortality of fresh water phytoplankton caused by changes in osmotic pressure in the region. Observations in the same regions such as increase in AOU(Apparent Oxygen Utilization)and ammonia, decrease in PH,probably resulted through decomposition processes of dead planktons, furtuer support the idea.
