  • This study investigated the possibility of strength development by incorporating the slighly coarser soda-lime glass powder (GP) with 0-100 wt.% of Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) to synthesis GGBS based geopolymer. Compressive strength, water absorption & apparent porosity, were experimentally determined. To determine the homogeneity of mix, the microstructure & elemental composition of samples were studied using SEM-EDS. Study reveals the improvement in strength and reduction in porosity for the samples containing up to 30% GP. Furthermore, the microstructure analyses confirmed the development of denser and compact structure with the incorporation of glass powder up to 30%.

  • A self-absorption correction is important issue for the exact radioactivity determination of gamma emitting radionuclides in environmental samples which have the range of apparent density from $0.3g/cm^3$ up to $1.5g/cm^3$. In this paper, a practical and simple method without radioactive standard solutions having various densities is proposed for the self-absorption correction of environmental samples by a developed outside beaker surrounding Marinelli beaker. For the densities of 0.8, 1.0, $1.3g/cm^3$, the corrected efficiencies by the new method and the measured those by radioactive standard solutions of the three densities showed good agreement within 4 %.

  • The study was carried out to investigate the quality characteristics of pellets manufactured with adding soybean oil, waste soybean oil, ozonized soybean oil and ozonized waste soybean oil to Larix kaemferi Carr sawdust. The characteristics of pellet included moisture contents, heating value, ash contents, apparent densities, durabilities, absorption ratio and elementary analysis. Moisture contents were shown 7.66~9.48% which satisfied the first grade (less than 10%) of quality standard of wood pellets announced by Korea Forest Research Institute. The heating value of the manufactured wood pellets in this study exceeded the first grade of quality standard (more than 4,300 kcal/kg) and it appeared that the pellets manufactured with adding oils and ozonized oils had more heating value than the control pellets. Ash contents 0.34~0.42% also passed the first grade (less than 0.7%) of quality standard and apparent densities were adequate for the first grade (640 kg/$m^3$) on the quality standard. Durabilities of the pellets manufactured with adding soybean oil and ozonized waste soybean oil were shown over the first grade (97.5 kg/$m^3$) of quality standard. In the general results of durabilities, the pellets manufactured with additives had better values than the control pellets. After 24 hours absorption ratio experiment, absorption ratio of pellets manufactured with additives also appeared much lower moisture absorption than the control pellets and they still had the same results after 5days absorption ratio experiment. Elementary analysis of the sulfur content was satisfied the first grade (less than 0.05%) of quality standard of wood pellets and the nitrogen content was also adequate for the first grade (less than 0.3%) of quality standard of wood pellets.

  • Intakes and excretions of zinc and copper were determined for 8 female adolescents (aged 16.4$\pm$0.5 y; body mass index 20.4$\pm$1.3kg/$m^2$; body fat 33.3$\pm$2.5%; bone mineral density of lumbar spine in L2-L4; 0.96$\pm$0.08g/$\textrm{cm}^2$) when they consumed diets basal and high in calcium for 6 days each. All subjects consumed a basal Ca diet containing 800 mg, Korean RDA level of the subjects, and a high Ca diet containing 1200mg, RDA plus 2 SDs of calcium intake. The diets provided 58% of energy intake as carbohydrate, 25% as fat, and 17% as protein. Food, urine and fecal samples were collected during the last 3 days of each feeding period and were assayed. Mean daily intakes on the basal and high calcium diets, respectively, were 6.57 and 6.37 mg for zinc and 910 and 812 $\mu\textrm{g}$for copper. Fecal excretion of copper and zinc in relation to intake was significantly greater on the high calcium than on the basal calcium diet. Hence, apparent absorption rate was significantly lowered from 98.7% on the basal calcium diet to 97.9% on the high calcium diet for zinc from 66.3% to 56.4% for copper, respectively. Urinary loss of copper was not detectable but that of zinc was 0.38mg on the basal diet and 0.47mg on the high calcium diet. Copper retention was 899$\pm$105$\mu\textrm{g}$/day on the basal calcium diet and 792$\pm$20.8$\mu\textrm{g}$/day on the high calcium diet, and zinc retention was 3.95$\pm$0.91mg/day and 3.11$\pm$0.89mg/day. Thus, copper and zinc retention was significantly decreased on the high calcium diet (p<0.05). Summarizing the results, apparent absorption and retention of zinc and copper were significantly decreased by calcium supplementation. Therefore, it is suggested that interactions among minerals should be considered in determining RDA.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of dietary protein and calcium levels on iron and zinc balance in eight healthy Korean young women. The 20-day metabolic study consisted of a 2-day adaptation period followed by three 6-day experimental periods. Three experimental diets were the low protein-low calcium(LProLCa ; protein 44g, Ca 422mg), the high protein-low calcium(HProLCa ; 'protein 85g, Ca 365mg) and the high protein-high calcium (HProHCa ; protein 84g, Ca 727mg). Apparent absorption and balance of iron and zinc were significantly higher when subjects were fed high protein-low calcium diet than low protein-low calcium diet. The elevation of dietary calcium significantly depressed the apparent absorption of iron and zinc. The levels of serum iron and zinc were likely to be increased with a high protein diet, but the differences were not significant. There was a strong correlation(r=O.99) between the iron intake and serum iron concentration. Serum zinc concentration was not correlated with hair zinc. Study results revealed that the levels of dietary protein and calcium influence iron and zinc balance in Koreans. This study suggests that dietary recommendations for trace minerals, such as iron and zinc, should be carefully examined. In addition, there is a need to evaluate the bioavailability of milk or beverage products enriched with calcium and iron.

  • The effects of ethanol and dietary protein levels on the calcium and phosphorus metabolism were investigated in 15-week-old male rats. Rats were divided into 4 groups ; control group(16% protein, 16 PC) and 8%(8 PE), 16%(16 PE), and 24% protein groups (24 PE) to which was given 5% ethanol mixed with their drinking water. Body weigh gain, organ weight, hemoglobin content, and hematocrit value were not affected by either ethanol or dietary protein levels. Calcium concentrations in spleen were significantly decreased in the ethanol groups than those in control group. Calcium and Phosphorus levels in femur, serum, liver, kidney, and muscle were normal. Among ethanol treated groups, fecal excretions of calcium were a little more decreased, but urinary excretions, balances and apparent absorption rate of calcium were a little more increased in higher percentage of protein group than lower percentage. Urinary phosphorus excretions in the ethanol treated groups were significantly decreased compared with the control group. Among ethanol treated groups, phosphorus balance and apparent phosphorus absorption rate of 24 PE group were significantly higher than those of 8 PE and 16 PE groups.

  • This study has investigated the bioavailability of calcium in eggshell powder (ESP) fortified ramen. Wean-ling SD rats were maintained for 2 weeks on 0.05$\%$ low calcium diet then assigned randomly to one of 5 groups. Animals were provided for 4 weeks one of 3 different experimental diets containing 0.15$\%$ calcium as $CaCo_{3}$, NFDM, or ESP fortified ramen. Two control groups were fed either 0.05$\%$ calcium or general ramen containing 0.08$\%$ calcium. The body weight, diet intake, food efficiency ratio (FER), bone growth, calcium contents of bones, and apparent absorption were measured. Experimental results show that regardless of calcium sources 0.15$\%$ calcium groups increased body weight, weight and length, calcium content, and the strength of two bones (tibia and femur) significantly compared to 0.05$\%$ calcium group. The apparent absorption rate of calcium also showed similar results supporting the bioavailability of ESP fortified ramen is not inferior to either NFDM or $CaCO_{3}cdot$ The results indicate that ESP fortified ramen is a proper mediate for calcium fortification in Korea.

  • The bioequivalence of two omeprazole enteric-coated products was evaluated in 16 normal male volunteers (age 26-32 yr, body weight 57-75 kg) following single oral administration. Test product was enteric-coated KD-182 tablet (Chong Kun Dang Corp., Korea) and reference product was $Rosec^{\circledR}$ capsule containing enteric-coated pellets of omeprazole (Yuhan Corp., Korea). Both products contain 20 mg of omeprazole. One tablet or capsule of the test or the reference product was administered to the volunteers, respectively, by randomized two period cross-over study ($2\;{\times}\;2$ Latin square method). Average drug concetrations at each sampling time and pharmacokinetic parameters calculated were not significantly different between two products(p>0.05); the area under the concentrationtime curve to last sampling time (8 hr) $(AUC_{0-8hr})$ $(1946.5{\pm}675.3\;vs\;2018.3{\pm}761.6\;ng{\cdot}hr/ml)$, AUC from time zero to infinite $(AUC_{o-\infty})$ $(2288.6{\pm}1212.8\;vs\;2264.9{\pm}1001.3\;ng{\cdot}hr/ml)$, maximum plasma concentration $(C_{max})$ $(772.5{\pm}283.3\;vs\;925.8{\pm}187.7\;ng/ml)$, time to maximum plasma concentration $(T_{max})$ $(2.38{\pm}1.06\;vs\;2.34{\pm}1.09\;hr)$, apparent elimination rate constant $(k_{\ell})$ $(0.5339{\pm}0.2687\;vs\;0.5769 {\pm}0.2184\;hr^{-I})$, apparent absorption rate constant $(k_a)$ $(1.1536{\pm}0.5278\;vs\;0.9739{\pm}0.9507 hr^{-1})$ and mean residence time (MRT) $(3.13{\pm}0.73\;vs \;3.41{\pm}1.04\;hr)$. The differences of mean $(AUC_{0-8hr})$, $C_{max}$, $T_{max}$ and MRT between the two products (3.69, 19.83, 1.32 and 8.99%, respectively) were less than 20%. The power $(1-{\beta})$ and treatment difference $(\triangle)$ for $AUC_{o-8hr}$ $C_{max}$ and MRT were more than 0.8 and less than 0.2, respectively. Although the power for $T_{max}$ was under 0.8, $T_{max}$ of the two products was not significantly different each other(p>0.05). These results suggest that the bioavailability of KD-182 tablet is not significantly different from that of $Rosec^{\circledR}$ capsule. Therefore, two products are bioequivalent based on the current results.

  • Considering the importance of cassava as food crops in humid tropics, the effect of feed moisture (20, 25%) and barrel temperature (110, $130^{\circ}C$) on physical properties (piece density, expansion, mechanical properties, color, water solubility index, water absorption index) and pasting properties of extruded cassava starch was investigated. The feed moisture used during extrusion processing had a significant effect on extrudates SME input, specific length and piece density at (p<0.05) while effect on cross-sectional expansion index, apparent elastic modulus and breaking strength in bending shown significantly at p<0.1. Furthermore, the interaction effect of feed moisture and barrel temperature gave a significantly affected the SME input and piece density (p<0.1), specific length (p<0.05) and on redness (p<0.01). The increase in water injection rate led to increase in piece density, apparent elastic modulus, breaking strength in bending, cold peak viscosity, breakdown and final viscosity and decrease in cross-sectional expansion index and specific length. It was found that the extrusion cooking process did not affect the value of color L, color b, water solubility index and water absorption index. Thus, the results of this study can be useful to some extent in developing extruded cassava starch as human and animal feeds.

  • The fine aggregates of below 2 mm size was fabricated using by the vertical furnace in which the aggregates could be sintered at floating state and its physical properties were analyzed. The liquid formed at the surface of specimens sintered at $1200{\sim}l300^{\circ}C$ induced a gas in core to expand so the denser shell and porous core could be produced. The C series specimen fabricated by crushing an extruded body had an irregular shape and sharp edges but those became spheroidized by bloating due to gas expansion inside. The fine aggregates fabricated in this study was as light as floating in the water and had an apparent density of $0.68{\sim}1.08$. The absorption rate was proportioned to a porosity showing that the pores in core was not closed completely. The properties of fine aggregates fabricated in vertical furnace were similar with those of in an electric muffle furnace but the sticking-together phenomenon by surface fusion was not occurred in the vertical furnace. The aggregates fabricated in this study had a little lower impact resistance than that of natural aggregate but satisfied the unit volume weight standard specified in KS.
