Distribution and Bionomics of the Argentine Ant Linepithema humile (Mayr) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Dolichoderinae)

  • In this study, the distribution, bait preference, hosts, symbionts, habitat status, and cytochrome c oxidase subunit-I sequences of the ant Linepithema humile were analyzed. This species habitat comprised approximately 1.5 km along stone crevices, flower gardens, roadsides, and container yards in the vicinity of Busan station, Korea. Feeding activity of this species was confirmed in 9 species of 7 families of plants. Which was approximately 14% of total flora (63 species of 37 families) in the studied area. Particularly, it was observed that Dendranthema indicum and Camellia japonica were the most frequently visited. Further, we verified that they interacted with four species of aphids. We identified 22 species of ants (17 genera, 4 subfamilies) inhabiting the Busan station area, including L. humile, Tetramorium tsushimae, Nylanderia flavipes and the alien species Paratrechina longicornis. In areas where L. humile was the dominant species, the habitat of local native ants was reduced by approximately 30%. Bait preference was ranked in the following order: jelly, water with glucose (25%), and yogurt, with the highest preference for baits containing sugar and protein. The 630-bp cytochrome c oxidase subunit-I sequences of the local L. humile populations were 99% identical to those of L. humile in the National Center for Biotechnology Information database, and the Argentine ants that invaded Korea had a sequence identical to that of other invasive populations from China, Japan, and New Zealand. As L. humile rapidly increases due to domestic adaptation, continuous monitoring and control strategy for eradication are needed to protect domestic biodiversity.

Indoor Occurrence of the Ghost Ant Tapinoma melanocephalum (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Urban Homes in Korea

  • The ghost ant Tapinoma melanocephalum is a common household pest worldwide. The present study examined the occurrence of the species in urban homes in Korea. During the period of September 2014 to January 2016, T. melanocephalum workers were collected from 58 homes at 29 different localities using bait traps with 10% sugar solution. The species was widely distributed throughout urban homes at 29 different localities, and the indoor occurrence of T. melanocephalum was highest in Seoul (32.7%) and metropolitan areas of Gyeonggi-do (Province) (29.3%). The indoor incidence rate of T. melanocephalum peaked in September (22.8%), remained moderate from October through April, and peaked again in May (15.7%). In contrast, a low incidence was observed from June to August (7.0%). The present study provides evidence that native ants, such as T. melanocephalum, are potential indoor pests of homes in Korea throughout the year.

지리산지역(智異山地域)의 개미의 종류(種類)와 수직분포(垂直分布) (On the Kinds of Ants(Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and Vertical Distribution in Jiri Mountain)

  • 지리산지역(智異山地域)에 분포(分布)하는 개미의 종류(種類)와 수직분포(垂直分布)를 1984년(年)부터 3개년간(個年間) 15회(回)에 걸쳐 42개소(個所)에서 채집조사(採集調査)한 결과(結果)는 다음과 같다. 1. 지리산지역(智異山地域)에 분포(分布)하는 개미의 종류(種類)는 3아과(亞科) 16속(屬) 31종(種)이었다. 2. 우세종(優勢種)은 곰개미(Formica japonica), 레만개미(Formica lemani), 고동털개미(Lasius niger), 누운털개미(Lasius alienus), 극동혹개미(Pheidole fervida) 및 빗개미(Myrmica ruginodis) 등 6종(種)이고, 희소종(稀少種)은 긴호리가슴개미(Leptothurax congruus), 혹개미(Pheidole nodus), 일본장다리개미(Aphaenogaster japonira), 에메리개미(Vollenhovia emeryi), 제주왕개미(Camponotus tokioensis), 가시개미(Polyrhachis lamellidens), 만주잘록개미(Plagiolepsis mandjurica), 북방뿔개미(Myrmica yessensis) 및 홈개미(Myrmica sulcinodis) 등 9종(種)으로 나타났다. 3. 아과별(亞科別) 종구성(種構成)은 불개미아과(亞科)(Formicinae) 16종(種), 두마디개미아과(亞科)(Myrmicinae) 13종(種), 침개미아과(亞科)(Ponerinae) 2종(種)으로 구성(構成)되어 있었다. 4. 침개미류(類)는 저지대(低地帶)에서 1,800m까지, 두마디개미류(類)와 불개미류(類)는 저지대(低地帶)에서 1,915m까지 분포(分布)하고 있었다. 천왕봉(天王峰)에는 빗개미(Myrmica ruginodis), 굽은자루뿔개미(Myrmica sp.), 북방뿔개미(Myrmica yessensis), 홈개미(Myrmica sulcinodis), 북방호리가슴개미(Leptothorax acevorum), 곰개미(Formica japonic), 레만개미(Formica lemani), 및 일본왕개미(Camponotus japonicus) 등 8종(種)만 분포(分布)하고 있었다. 한국홍가슴개미(Camponotus trox)의 수직적분포범위(垂直的分布範圍)는 $800{\sim}1,800m$였다.

  • 연안생태계의 호염성 톡토기와 개미군집의 생물다양성정도와 변동에 대해 알아보기 위해, 주변환경과 식생이 다른 세지역에서 정량채집을 실시하였다. 종조성이나 분포에 영향을 주는 요인을 찾기 위해 pH, 염도 및 전기전도도를 측정하였다. 연구결과 톡토기의 종조성 이나 분포에는 pH와 식생보다도 토성과 염도가 더 큰 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 개미의 경우는 집을 지을 적당한 장소를 제공해 줄 수 있는 식생과 조수에 의한 침수에 더 큰 영향을 받는 것으로 사료된다. 모든 조사지역에서 조상대가 조간대보다 다양도가 높았으며 조간대중에서는 모래함량이 높은 동호의 상조대에서 가장 높게 나타났다
