In membrane bioreactor (MBR), activated sludge degrade the biological component and membrane process separate this bacterial flocks as well the suspended solids. However, membrane fouling is one of the major issues in MBR. In this review, composite membrane used in MBR to overcome fouling is discussed. It is classified into membrane containing carbon and noncarbon materials. Introducing graphene, graphene oxide (GO) and carbon nanotubes or their modified part into pristine membrane enhance hydrophilicity of the composite membrane. Inorganic materials like silicon dioxide (SiO2) or titanium dioxide (TiO2) are also incorporated for preparing composite membrane to increase its water flux.
A novel hydrophilic poly (vinylidene fluoride)/poly (p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PVDF/PPTA) blend membrane was prepared by in situ polycondensation of p-phenylene diamine (PPD) and terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) in PVDF solution with subsequent nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. For comparison, conventional solution blend membrane was prepared directly by adding PVDF powder into PPTA polycondensation solution. Blend membranes were characterized by means of viscometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). The effects of different blending methods on membrane performance including water contact angle (WCA), mechanical strength, anti-fouling and anti-compression properties were investigated and compared. Stronger interactions between PVDF and PPTA in in situ blend membranes were verified by viscosity and XPS analysis. The incorporation of PPTA accelerated the demixing rate and caused the formation of a more porous structure in blend membranes. In situ blend membranes exhibited better hydrophilicity and higher tensile strength. The optimal values of WCA and tensile strength were $65^{\circ}$ and 34.1 MPa, which were reduced by 26.1% and increased by 26.3% compared with pure PVDF membrane. Additionally, antifouling properties of in situ blend membranes were greatly improved than pure PVDF membrane with an increasing of flux recovery ratio by 25%. Excellent anti-compression properties were obtained in in situ blend membranes with a stable pore morphology. The correlations among membrane formation mechanism, structure and performance were also discussed.
The modification of ultrafiltration membranes with carbon nanotube (CNT) buckypaper on fouling control was investigated. Two types of commercially available flat-sheet membranes were used: PS35 and PES900C/D (PES) (the PS35 membranes were hydrophilic with a molecular weight cutoff of 20 kDa, and the PES membranes were hydrophobic with a molecular weight cutoff of 20 kDa). The CNT buckypaper modified ultrafiltration membranes were prepared by filtering a CNT suspension through the flat-sheet membrane in a dead-end ultrafiltration unit. After modification, the pure water flux of PES was significantly increased, while the pure water flux of PS35 was decreased. The properties of the CNT modified membranes were also investigated. Considering the antifouling properties, pure water flux of the modified membrane, and the stability of CNT buckypaper layer on the membrane surface, ethanol solution with a concentration of 50 wt.%, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with a larger diameter (30-50 nm), and the CNT loading with $7.5g/m^2$ was selected. The CNT buckypaper on the surface of ultrafiltration membranes can trap the pollutants in sewage effluent and prevent them reaching the surface of virgin membranes. Water quality analysis showed that the effluent quality of the modified membrane was obviously improved. The removal efficiency of humic acid and protein-like matters by the modified membrane was significant. These results indicate the potential application of the CNT buckypaper layer modified membranes in the field of wastewater reclaim.

The organotion compound was dissolved by heating, and the organic matters was oxidized and turned into inorganotins, then they were stabilized in the end. At 500^{\circ}C$, the organotin compound which heated for one hour was removed by 58%, and in 1000^{\circ}C$ the organotin compound was treated by 99.9% after and hour of heating treatment.

The purpose of this study was to identify the cleaning efficiency of fouled multi-bore hollow fiber membranes after purification of contaminated water. The PSf (polysulfone) based hollow fiber membrane manufactured by Pure & B Tech Co., Ltd. Was used in this study. The antifouling characteristics during the water treatment were studied using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a model compound and the chemical resistance was evaluated after long-term impregnation in sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solution and Citric acid to understand the long term stability of the membranes. Water permeability and mechanical strength of the membranes after prolonged chemical exposure was measured to observe the change in mechanical stability and long term performance of the membrane. moreover, the recovery efficiency was also evaluated after chemical enhanced backwashing of a membrane contaminated with bovine serum albumin. The PSf hollow fiber membrane exhibited excellent chemical resistance, and it was confirmed that the efficiency of sodium hypochlorite was high as a result of chemical enhanced backwashing.
To investigate surface properties and interception performances of the new modified PVDF membrane coated with Graphene Oxide (GO) and nano-$TiO_2$ (for short the modified membrane) via the interface polymerization method combined with the pumping suction filtration way, filtration experiments of the modified membrane on Humic Acid (HA) were conducted. Results showed that the contact angle (characterizing the hydrophilicity) of the modified membrane decreased from $80.6{\pm}1.8^{\circ}$ to $38.6{\pm}1.2^{\circ}$. The F element of PVDF membrane surface decreased from 60.91% to 17.79% after covered with GO and $TiO_2$. O/C element mass ratio has a fivefold increase, the percentage of O element on the modified membrane surface increased from 3.83 wt% to 20.87%. The modified membrane surface was packed with hydrophilic polar groups (like -COOH, -OH, C-O, C=O, N-H) and a functional hydrophilic GO-polyamide-$TiO_2$ composite configuration. This configuration provided a rigid network structure for the firm attachment of GO and $TiO_2$ on the surface of the membrane and for a higher flux as well. The total flux attenuation rate of the modified membrane decreased to 35.6% while 51.2% for the original one. The irreversible attenuation rate has dropped 71%. The static interception amount of HA on the modified membrane was $158.6mg/m^2$, a half of that of the original one ($295.0mg/m^2$). The flux recovery rate was increased by 50%. The interception rate of the modified membrane on HA increased by 12% approximately and its filtration cycle was 2-3 times of that of the original membrane.
Separation membranes used in water filtration, protein purification or biomedical filtration device frequently undergo membrane fouling for several reasons. The formation of biofilm on the membrane surface by bacteria causes a severe problem for durability of the membrane. For the protein separation, the membrane pores get blocked due to surface hydrophobicity of the membrane. There are several approaches controlling the membrane fouling and one of them is the incorporation of silver nanoparticles. Antibacterial properties of silver nanoparticles are well known and thus widely used in several applications. In this review, we have focused on the membranes where silver nanoparticles or its derivatives are either incorporated in the active layer of thin film composite membranes or uniformly distributed throughout the whole membranes.

Metal pipes are used in a wide range of applications, from plumbing systems of large construction sites to small devices such as medical tools. When a liquid is enforced to flow through a metal pipe, a higher flow rate is beneficial for higher efficiency. Using high pressures can enhance the flow rate yet can be harmful for medical applications. Thus, we consider an optimal geometrical design to increase the flow rate in medical devices. In this study, we focus on cannulas, which are widely used small metal pipes for surgical procedures, such as liposuction. We characterize the internal flow rate driven by a negative pressure and explore its dependence on the key design parameters. We quantitatively analyze the suction characteristics for each design variable by conducting computational fluid dynamics simulations. In addition, we build a suction performance measurement system which enables the translational motion of cannulas with pre-programmed velocity for experimental validation. The inner diameter, section geometry, and hole configuration are the design factors to be evaluated. The effect of the inner diameter dominates over that of section geometry and hole configuration. In addition, the circular tube shape provides the maximum flow rate among the elliptical geometries. Once the flow rate exceeds a critical value, the rate becomes independent of the number and width of the suction holes. Finally, we introduce a slippery liquid-infused nanoporous surface (SLIPS) coating using nanoparticles and hydrophobic lubricants that effectively improves the flow rate and antifouling property of cannulas without altering the geometrical design parameter.
This review addresses the pressing need for effective wastewater treatment methodologies by exploring advanced thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) nanofiltration membranes aimed at efficient dye removal from industrial effluents. Utilizing insights from recent research, the review focuses on the fabrication of TFN membranes incorporating innovative materials such as nanocarbons, silica nanospheres, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and MoS2. The primary goals are to enhance dye removal efficiency, improve antifouling properties, and maintain high selectivity for dye/salt separation. By leveraging the distinct advantages of these nanomaterials-including large surface areas, mechanical robustness, and specific pollutant interaction capabilities-this review aims to overcome the limitations of current nanofiltration technologies and provide sustainable solutions for water treatment challenges.
