Effect of Al2O3-ZrO2 Composite Oxide Thickness on Electrical Properties of Etched Al Foil

  • To increase the capacitance of an Al electrolytic capacitor, the anodic oxide film, $Al_2O_3$, was partly replaced by an $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ (Al-Zr) composite film prepared by the vacuum infiltration method and anodization. The microstructure and composition of the prepared samples were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The coated and anodized samples showed multi-layer structures, which consisted of an inner Al hydrate layer, a middle Al-Zr composite layer, and an outer $Al_2O_3$ layer. The thickness of the coating layer could go up to 220 nm when the etched Al foil was coated 8 times. The electrical properties of the samples, such as specific capacitance, leakage current, and withstanding voltages, were also characterized after anodization at 100 V and 600 V. The capacitances of samples with $ZrO_2$ coating were 36.3% and 27.5% higher than those of samples without $ZrO_2$ coating when anodized at 100 V and 600 V, respectively.

Effects of Metal Anion Complexes in Electrolyte on the Properties of Anodic Oxide Films on ADC12 Al Alloy

  • The anodization of ADC12 aluminum alloy was investigated in the metal anionic acid media. Anodic oxide films containing foreign elements were formed on ADC12 Al alloy by anodization in the anion complex solution. Furthermore, the rough surface and cracks were considerably smoothened by the deposit of metal anions. When the size of metal anion was small, relatively large amount of metal anions was loaded in anodic films. Existence of $MoO_3$, $TiO_2$ and MgO was confirmed by XPS. According to the results of Tafel analysis, Mo oxide represented the most noble anti-corrosion potential due to $MoS_2$ formation. Corrosion current densities were generally higher than that of pristine anodic oxide without anion complexes.

  • $SnO_2$ has a high potential for electric and electronic applications. We have anodized pure tin metal and nano porous tin oxide film was obtained on pure Sn. Nano porous tin oxide were grown by anodization in nonaqueous-base electrolytes at different potentials between 5 V and 100 V. Pore size of ~100nm was observed by FE-SEM. Pore sizes as a function of applied voltage and anodizing time were characterized. We obtained nano porous tin oxide film having an uniform pore size at low temperature. High specific surface area of $SnO_2$ will be very useful for gas sensor, lithium battery, and dye sensitized solar cell.

Effect of 2nd Anodization on the Pore Formation for Alumina Nano Templates (알루미나 나노템플레이트의 기공형성에 미치는 2차 양극산화의 영향)

  • Porous anodic aluminum oxide layer for nano templates was prepared in acidic solutions. In order to investigate effects of 2nd anodization on ordered formation behaviors of the porous oxide layers, electrochemical and microstructural studies were performed, primarily using TEM, FE- SEM, AFM, and Ultramicrotomy. The pore diameter of the anodic oxide layer increased approximately linearly with increasing voltages, and to the contrary, the pore density decreased. It was shown that 2nd anodizing on the cell base after dissolving 1st anodic oxide layer was remarkably effective for forming ordered array of the pores, comparing with the case for 1st anodization only. And for controlling the diameter of pores, widening method by chemical dissolution seemed more practical than by electrochemical methods.

Morphology Change of Nanotube and Micropore on the Ti-25Nb-xHf Alloys with Hf Contents after Anodization

  • In this study, we investigated morphology of nanotube and micropore on the Ti-25Nb-xHf alloys with Hf contents after anodization. Ti-25Nb-xHf ternary alloys contained from (0~15) wt.% Hf contents were manufactured by vacuum arc-melting furnace. The obtained ingots were homogenized in an argon atmosphere at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 12h and then water quenching. The specimens were cut from ingots to 3mm thickness and first ground and polished using SiC paper (grades from 100 to 2000). 2steps anodization treatments on Ti-25Nb-xHf alloys were carried out at room temperature for experiments. Micro-pore formation was performed in Ca+P mixed solution at 265V for 3min. After that, nanotube formation was in 1M $H_3PO_4$ electrolytes containing 0.8wt.% NaF solutionat 10V for 120min. Morphologies of micropore and nanotube depended on the Hf content in Ti-25Nb-xZr ternary system.

  • Studying the long-range ordering of nanopores on the anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes under a hard anodization (HA) approach is crucial in producing well-aligned nanopores on the AAO membranes. Electro-polishing in a mixture of ethanol and perchloric acid for 5 min removed marks formed by rolling and produced flat surfaces on aluminum substrates. The AAO was formed by the first HA process, providing seeds for the subsequent production of uniform AAO nanopores. The second HA process carried out on the seeds produced well-aligned, uniform AAO nanopores. The AAO nanopores, varying in size and shape, were observed with voltages applied for HA. This study provides a route for controlling the size and shape of AAO nanopores by changing the applied voltages.

Surface Modification of Functional Titanium Oxide to Improve Corrosion Resistance (내식성 향상을 위한 기능성 타이타늄 표면 개질)

  • Titanium is applied in various industries due to its valuable properties and abundant reserves. Generally, if a highly uniform oxide structure and a high-density oxide film is formed on the surface through anodization treatment, the utility value such as color appearance and corrosion inhibition efficiency is further increased. The objective of this study was to determine improvement of water-repellent property by controlling titanium oxide parameters such as pore size and inter-pore distance to improve corrosion resistance. Oxide film structures of different shapes were prepared by controlling the anodization processing time and voltage. These oxide structures were then analyzed using a Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM). Afterwards, a Self-Assembled Monolayer (SAM) coating was performed for the oxide structure. The contact angle was measured to determine the relationship between the shape of the oxide film and the water-repellency. The smaller the solid fraction of the surface, the higher the water-repellent effect. The surface with excellent hydrophobic properties showed improved corrosion resistance. Such water-repellent surface has various applications. It is not only useful for corrosion prevention, but also useful for self-cleaning. In addition, a hydrophobic titanium may open up a new world of biomaterials to remove bacteria from the surface.

RuO2-Doped TiO2 Nanotube Membranes Prepared via a Single-Step/Potential Shock Sequence

  • Anodic $TiO_2$ nanotubes were simultaneously grown and doped with $RuO_2$ by single-step anodization in a negatively-charged $RuO_4{^-}$ precursor. Subsequently, a high positive voltage was imposed on the nanotubes in an $F^-$-based electrolyte (a process referred to as potential shock), which led to the formation of a through-hole $RuO_2$-doped $TiO_2$ nanotube membrane without significant loss of the $RuO_2$ catalyst. XPS results confirmed that the doped Ru metal was converted into $RuO_2$ as the potential shock voltage increased. Further increases in the potential shock voltage led to the formation of $RuO_x/Ru$ in the $TiO_2$ nanotubes. All of our results clearly showed that a through-hole catalyst-doped $TiO_2$ nanotube membrane can be produced by a sequence consisting of single-step anodization and the potential shock process.

Comparison of Hydrophobicity and Corrosion Properties of Aluminum 5052 and 6061 Alloys After Anodized Surface Treatment (알루미늄 5052 및 6061 합금의 양극산화 표면처리를 통한 발수 특성 및 부식 특성 비교)

  • Aluminum alloy is used by adding various elements according to the needs of the industry. Aluminum alloys such as 5052 and 6061 are known to possess excellent corrosion resistance by adding Mg. Despite their excellent physical properties, corrosion can occur. To solve this problem, an anodization technique generally can improve corrosion resistance by forming an oxide structure with maximized hydrophobic properties through coatings. In this study, the anodizing technique was used to improve the hydrophobicity of aluminum 5052 and 6061 by creating porous nanostructures on top of the surface. An oxide film was formed by applying anodizing voltages of 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 V to aluminum alloys followed by immersion in 0.1 M phosphoric acid for 30 minutes to expand oxide pores. Contact angle and corrosion characteristics were different according to the structure after anodization. For the 5052 aluminum, the corrosion potential was improved from -363 mV to -154 mV as the contact angle increased from 116° to 136°. For the 6061 aluminum, the corrosion potential improved from -399 mV to -124 mV when the contact angle increased from 116° to 134°.

Study on Color and Oxidation Thickness for Titanium Spectacle Frames Colored by Anodization (양극산화방법으로 착색한 티타늄 안경테의 산화막 두께에 따른 색상 연구)

  • Purpose: To examine the coloring condition of titanium spectacle frames with various colors by using anodization method. Methods: We made an anodization coater. Platinum plate with $3{\times}3cm^2$ was used for a cathode and titanium spectacle frame specimens was mounted on an anode in an electrolyte. An electric source device were designed to supply steady state current. The color of the coated spectacle frame specimens were measured by a spectrophotometer equipped with an integrating sphere. We use CIE $L^*a^*b$ color system as chromaticity coordinates. Results: The thickness of $TiO_2$ of titanium spectacle frame specimens was varied as controlling current flow time for electrodes. The specimens with various kinds of color as a walnut, a yellow brown, a navy blue, a blue, a light blue, a mung bean, a yellowish green, a light purple, a purple, a flower pink, a bluish green, an emerald, and a green color etc. were obtained. The values of CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ for these specimens were measured and analyzed to be changed clockwise in chromaticity coordinates as the thickness of $TiO_2$ increases. Conclusions: We identified the coloring mechanism by anodization method in titanium spectacle frame specimens.
