The purposed of this work was to determine surface charateristics of anodized Ti-30Nb-xTa alloys with Ta content. Samples were prepared by arc melting, followed by followed by homogenization for 12 hr at $1000^{\circ}C$ in argon atmosphere. The electrolyte for anodization treatment was prepared by mixing 465ml $H_2O$ with 35M $H_3PO_4$ and anodized at 180V to 220V. The microstructures of the alloys were examined by X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and optical microscopy (OM). Surface characteristics of anodized Ti-30Nb-xTa alloys was investigated by potentiodynamic test and potentiostatic in 0.9% Nacl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. It was observed that the changed ${\alpha}$ phase to ${\beta}$ phase with Ta content.
Electrochemical oxidation of silicon (p-type Si(100)) at room temperature in ethylene glycol and in aqueous solutions has been performed by applying constant low current densities for the preparation of thin SiO2 layers. In-situ ac impedance spectroscopic methods have been employed to characterize the interfaces of electrolyte/oxide/semiconductor and to estimate the thickness of the oxide layer. The thicknesses of SiO2 layers calculated from the capacitive impedance were in the range of 25-100Å depending on the experimental conditions. The anodic polarization resistance parallel with the oxide layer capacitance increased continuously to a very large value in ethylene glycol solution. However, it decreased above 4 V in aqueous solutions, where oxygen evolved through the oxidation of water. Interstitially dissolved oxygen molecules in SiO2 layer at above the oxygen evolution potential were expected to facilitate the formation of SiO2 at the interfaces. Thin SiO2 films grew efficiently at a controlled rate during the application of low anodization currents in aqueous solutions.

Anodization is widely used to enhance the properties of aluminum, such as hardness, electric resistance, abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance etc. But these properties can be enhanced with additional process. According to the partial crystallization of oxide layer with post heat treatment, enhanced hardness can be expected with partial crystallization. In this study, post heat treatments were applied to the anodized aluminum alloys of Al6061 to achieve the partial crystallization, and crystallizations were evaluated with the reduced breakdown voltages. Interestingly, remarkable enhanced hardness (21~29%), abrasion resistance (26~62%), and reduced breakdown voltage (24~44%) were observed for the sulfuric acid anodized samples when we annealed the anodized samples with 1hour post heat treatment at $360^{\circ}C$. For the Al5052 alloys, a lot of cracks were observed when we applied the post heat treatment.

This research develops an easy-to-use, environmentally friendly method for fabricating functional 1050 aluminum alloy surfaces with excellent corrosion resistance. Functional aluminum surfaces with various nanostructures are fabricated by controlling the experimental conditions of anodizing process. The experiment used a multi-step anodizing process that alternates between two different anodizing modes, mild anodizing (MA) and hard anodizing (HA), together with a pore-widening (PW) process. Among them, the nanostructured surface with a small solid fraction shows superhydrophobicity with a contact angle of more than 170° after water-repellent coating. In addition, the surface with superhydrophobicity is difficult for corrosive substances to penetrate, so the corrosion resistance is greatly improved.
The titania nanotubular layer for photocatalytic application was synthesized by anodization process in HF solution and the photocatalytic efficiencies of nanotubular film were evaluated by the decomposition rate of aniline blue. In order to facilitate the photocatalytic reaction, the electron acceptors such as potassium bromate, hydrogen peroxide and ammonium persulfate were added to aniline blue solution and the effects of electron acceptors on the dye degradation efficiency were evaluated. The results showed that the photocatalytic efficiency has markedly improved by adding the electron acceptors.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the anodization and cyclic calcification treatment on the surface characteristic and bioactivity of the titanium thin sheet in order to obtain basic data for the production of bioactive titanium membrane. A $30{\times}20{\times}0.08mm$ titanium sheets were prepared, and then they were pickled for 10 seconds in the solution which was mixed with $HNO_3:HF:H_2O$ in a ratio of 12: 7: 81. The $TiO_2$ nanotube layer was formed to increase the specific surface area of the titanium, and then the cyclic calcification treatment was performed to induce precipitation of hydroxiapatite by improvement of the bioactivity. The corrosion resistance test, wettability test and immersion test in simulated body solution were conducted to investigate the effect of these surface treatments. The nanotubes formed by the anodization treatment have a dense structure in which small diameter tubes are formed between relatively large diameter tubes, and their inside was hollow and the outer walls were coupled to each other. The hydroxyapatite precipitates were well combined on the nanotubes by the penetration into the nanotube layer by successive cyclic calcification treatment, and the precipitation of hydroxyapatite tended to increase proportionally after immersion in simulated body solution as the number of cycles increased. In conclusion, it was confirmed that induction of precipitation of hydroxyapatite by cyclic calcification treatment after forming the nanotube $TiO_2$ nanotube layer on the surface of the titanium membrane can contribute to improvement of bioactivity.

Titanium and its alloys are widely used as implants in orthopedics, dentistry and cardiology due to their outstanding properties, such as high strength, high level of hemocompatibility and enhanced biocompatibility. Hence, recent works showed that the synthesis of new Ti-based alloys for implant application involves more biocompatible metallic alloying element, such as, Nb, Hf, Zr and Mo. In particular, Nb and Hf are one of the most effective Ti ${\beta}-stabilizer$ and reducing the elastic modulus. Plasma electrolyte oxidation (PEO) is known as excellent method in the biocompatibility of biomaterial due to quickly coating time and controlled coating condition. The anodized oxide layer and diameter modulation of Ti alloys can be obtained function of improvement of cell adhesion. Silicon (Si) and magnesium (Mg) has a beneficial effect on bone. Si in particular has been found to be essential for normal bone and cartilage growth and development. In vitro studies have shown that Mg plays very important roles in essential for normal growth and metabolism of skeletal tissue in vertebrates and can be detected as minor constituents in teeth and bone. The aim of this study is to research Si and Mg doped hydroxyapatite film formation by plasma electrolytic oxidation. Ti-29Nb-xHf (x= 0, 3, 7 and 15wt%, mass fraction) alloys were prepared Ti-29Nb-xHf alloys of containing Hf up from 0 wt% to 15 wt% were melted by using a vacuum furnace. Ti-29Nb-xHf alloys were homogenized for 2 hr at $1050^{\circ}C$. Each alloy was anodized in solution containing typically 0.15 M calcium acetate monohydrate + 0.02 M calcium glycerophosphate at room temperature. A direct current power source was used for the process of anodization. Anodized alloys was prepared using 270V~300V anodization voltage at room. A Si and Mg coating was produced by RF-magnetron sputtering system. RF power of 100W was applied to the target for 1h at room temperature. The microstructure, phase and composition of Si and Mg coated oxide surface of Ti-29Nb-xHf alloys were examined by FE-SEM, EDS, and XRD.

Commercially pure titanium (CP Ti) and Ti-6Al-4V alloys have been widely used for biomedical applications. However, the use of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy in biomaterial is then a subject of controversy because aluminum ions and vanadium oxide have potential detrimental influence on the human body due to vanadium and aluminum. Hence, recent works showed that the synthesis of new Ti-based alloys for implant application involves more biocompatible metallic alloying element, such as, Nb, Hf, Zr and Mo. Manganese(Mn) plays very important roles in essential for normal growth and metabolism of skeletal tissue in vertebrates and can be detected as minor constituents in teeth and bone. Radio frequency(RF) magnetron sputtering in the various PVD methods has high deposition rates, high-purity films, extremely high adhesion of films, and excellent uniform layers for depositing a wide range of materials, including metals, alloys and ceramics like a hydroxyapatite. The aim of this study is to research the Mn coatings on the micro-pore formed Ti-29Nb-xHf alloys by RF-magnetron sputtering for dental applications. A lot of various researches have been going on to use heat spreader for LED module. Nano porous aluminum anodic oxide (AAO) applied LED, which is produced from anodization, is easy and economically advantageous. Convensional LED module is consist of aluminum/adhesive/copper circuit. The polymer adhesive in this module is used as heat spreader. However the thermal emission of LED component is degraded because of low heat conductivity of polymer and also reliability of LED component is reduced. Therefore, AAO in this work was applied to heat spreader of LED module which has higher heat conductivity compare to polymer. Bonding strength between AAO and copper circuit was improved with Ti/Cu seed layer by copper sputtering process (DBC) before the bonding. And this copper circuit has been fabricated by electro plating method. Peel strength of AAO and copper circuit in this work showed range between 1.18~1.45 kgf/cm with anodizing process which is very suitable for high power LED application.

Titanium and its alloys offer attractive properties in a variety of applications. These are widely used for the field of biomedical implants because of its good biocompatibility and high corrosion resistance. Titanium anodizing is often used in the metal finishing of products, especially those can be used in the medical devices with dense oxide surface. Based on SAE/AMS (Society of Automotive Engineers/Aerospace Material Specification) 2488D, it has the specification for industrial titanium anodizing that have three different types of titanium anodization as following: Type I is used as a coating for elevated temperature forming; Type II is used as an anti-galling coating without additional lubrication or as a pre-treatment for improving adherence of film lubricants; Type III is used as a treatment to produce a spectrum of surface colours on titanium. In this study, we have focused on Type II anodization for the medical (dental and orthopedic) application, the anodized surface was modified with gray color under alkaline electrolyte. The surface characteristics were analyzed with Focused Ion Beam (FIB), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), surface roughness, Vickers hardness, three point bending test, biocompatibility, and corrosion (potentiodynamic) test. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy was used for specimen, the anodizing procedure was conducted in alkaline solution (NaOH based, pH>13). Applied voltage was range between 20 V to 40 V until the ampere to be zero. As results, the surface characteristics of anodic oxide layer were analyzed with SEM, the dissecting layer was fabricated with FIB method prior to analyze surface. The surface roughness was measured by arithmetic mean deviation of the roughness profile (Ra). The Vickers hardness was obtained with Vickers hardness tester, indentation was repeated for 5 times on each sample, and the three point bending property was verified by yield load values. In order to determine the corrosion resistance for the corrosion rate, the potentiodynamic test was performed for each specimen. The biological safety assessment was analyzed by cytotoxic and pyrogen test. Through FIB feature of anodic surfaces, the thickness of oxide layer was 1.1 um. The surface roughness, Vickers hardness, bending yield, and corrosion resistance of the anodized specimen were shown higher value than those of non-treated specimen. Also we could verify that there was no significant issues from cytotoxicity and pyrogen test.
