  • This paper presents the results of a detailed experimental examination of fully developed asymmetric flows between annular tubes with square-ribbed surface roughness. The main emphasis of the research has been on establishing the turbulence structure, particularly in the central region of the channel where the two dissimilar wall flows interact. Measurements have included profiles of time mean velocities, turbulence intensities, turbulent shear stresses, triple velocity correlations, skewness, and flatness. The region of greatest interaction is characterized by strong diffusional transport of turbulent shear stress and kinetic energy from rough toward the smooth wall region, giving rise to an appreciable separation between the planes of zero shear stresses depending on positions of roughness on the walls.

  • The fully developed tubulent momentum and heat transfer induced by the square- ribbed roughness elements on both the inner and outer wall surfaces in the concentric annuli are studied analytically based on a modified turbulence model. Heat transfer coefficients for two conditions, i.e, a) inner wall heated as constant heat flux and outer wall insulated b) inner wall insulated and outer wall heated as constant heat flux, are investigated. The analytical results of the fluid flow are verified by experiment. The experiment is done with a pitot tube and a X-type hot wire anemometer to measure the time mean velocity profiles, zero shear stress positions, maximum velocity profiles and friction factors, and etc. The resulting momentum and heat transfer are discussed in terms of various parameters, such as the radius ratio, the relative roughness, the roughness density, Nusselt number and Prandtl number.

The analytical results of the fuid flow are verified by experiment. The experiment is done with a pitot tube and a X-type hot wire anemometer to measure the time mean velocity profiles, zero shear stress positions, maximum velocity positions and friction factors, and etc. shown in Fig.1. The resulting momentum and heat transfer are discussed in terms of various parameters, such as the radius ratio, the relative roughness, the roughness density, Reynolds number, Nusselt bumber and Prand시 number. The study demonstrates that certain artificial roughness elements may be used to enhance heat transfer rates with advantage from the overall efficiency point of view by investigating turbulent flows and heat transfer in Fig.1.

  • An experimental study was performed to study heat transfer characteristics for turbulent flow in an axisymmetric annuli. The air flow temperature and the local Nusselt number in turbulent flow were measured or calculated for Re=30,000, 40,000, 50,000, 60,000, 70,000 and 80,000. The local Nusselts number were compared to that obtained from Dittus-Boelter equation with turbulent flow. The results show that the flow enhances the heat transfer in the initial and exit portion of the test tube.

  • Thermocapillary convection in an open cylindrical annulus heated from the inside wall is investigated by two-dimensional numerical simulations. The deformable free surface is obtained as a solution of the coupled transport equations at fixed Prandtl and aspect ratio. Only steady convection can be realized in this axisymmetric computations with either non-deformable or deformable surfaces. Dynamic free-surface deformations do not induce transitions to oscillatory convection even at large Reynolds numbers. Free surfaces are convex near the cold wall due to the stagnation point, and concave near the hot wall. Free surface deformation increases with increasing Ca at a fixed Re. Two peaks appear at the free surface with low Re, while additional ripples, four peaks, occur at larger Re. Thermocapillary convection in the open annulus interior is insensitive to variations in Ca.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate heat transfer characteristics of turbulent swirling flow in an axisymmetric annuli. The static pressure, the local flow temperature, and the wall temperature with decaying swirl were measured by using tangential inlet conditions and the friction factor and the local Nusselt number were calculated for Re=30000∼70000. The local Nusselt number was compared with that obtained from the Dittus-Boelter equation with swirl and without swirl. The results showed that the swirl enhances the heat transfer at the inlet and the outlet of the test tube.

  • Nucleate pool boiling of water in vertical annuli at atmospheric pressure has been studied experimentally and two empirical correlations have been suggested to obtain effects of geometric parameters on heat transfer. Data of the present and the previous tests range over a tube length of 0.50-0.57 m, a diameter of 16.5-34.0 mm, and an annular gap size of 3.7-44.3 mm. Through the analysis, tube bottom confinement (open or closed) has been investigated, as well. The developed correlations predict experimental data within a ${\pm}25%$ error bound. It has been identified that effects of the diameter and the length of heated tubes as well as the annular gap size should be counted into the analyses to estimate heat transfer coefficients accurately.
