  • Nano-materials with high effective surface areas have been applied to functional materials, such as high sensitive gas sensors and biosensors and high-efficiency catalytic materials. In this study, titanate sheets with a 3D nano-wall-like structure, high effective surface area, were synthesized vertically to the substrate by a chemical bath deposition (CBD) process using a Ti sheet and urea. The synthesis temperature and synthesis duration time were controlled to the optimal conditions of a 3D nano-wall-like structure in the CBD process. The synthesized ammonium titanate sheets with a 3D nano-wall-like structure were annealed in air to transform to TiO2 with a 3D nano-wall-like structure for various applications. As a result, the optimal temperature in the CBD process for the synthesis of a uniform ammonium titanate sheet with a 3D nano-wall-like structure was 90 ℃. TiO2 with a 3D nano-wall-like structure was obtained from the ammonium titanate sheet with a 3D nano-wall-like structure by annealing above 550 ℃ for three hours. In particular, TiO2 with a 3D nano-wall-like structure with a dominant rutile phase was obtained by post-annealing at 700 ℃. On the other hand, damage to the 3D nano-wall edge was observed after 700 ℃ post-annealing.

  • Flash lamp annealing (FLA) of metal nanoparticle (NP) ink has provided powerful strategies to fabricate high-performance electrodes on a flexible substrate because of its rapid processing capability (in milliseconds), low-temperature process, and compatibility with to roll-to-roll process. However, metal NPs [e.g., gold (Au), silver (Ag), copper (Cu), etc.] have limitations such as difficulty in synthesizing fine metal NPs (diameter less than 10 nm), high price, and degradation during ink storage and FLA processing. In this regard, organometallic ink has been proposed as a material that can replace metal NPs due to their low-cost (usually 1/100 times cheaper than metal nano inks), low-temperature processability, and high material stability. Despite these advantages, the fabrication of flexible electrodes through FLA treatment of organometallic compounds has not been extensively researched. In this paper, we experimentally guide how to determine the optimal conditions for forming electrodes on flexible substrates by considering material parameters, and flashlight processing parameters (energy density, pulse duration, etc) to minimize the difficulties that may arise during the FLA of organometallic ink.

  • Tungsten-nitrogen (W-N) co-doping has been known to enhance the photocatalytic activity of anatase titania nanoparticles by utilizing visible light. The doping effects are, however, largely dependent on calcination or annealing conditions, and thus, the massive production of quality-controlled photocatalysts still remains a challenge. Using density functional theory (DFT) thermodynamics and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) computations, we investigate the atomic structures of N doping and W-N co-doping in anatase titania, as well as the effect of the thermal processing conditions. We find that W and N dopants predominantly constitute two complex structures: an N interstitial site near a Ti vacancy in the triple charge state and the simultaneous substitutions of Ti by W and the nearest O by N. The latter case induces highly localized shallow in-gap levels near the conduction band minimum (CBM) and the valence band maximum (VBM), whereas the defect complex yielded deep levels (1.9 eV above the VBM). Electronic structures suggest that substitutions of Ti by W and the nearest O by N improves the photocatalytic activity of anatase by band gap narrowing, while defective structure degrades the activity by an in-gap state-assisted electron-hole recombination, which explains the experimentally observed deep level-related photon absorption. Through the real-time propagation of TDDFT (rtp-TDDFT), we demonstrate that the presence of defective structure attracts excited electrons from the conduction band to a localized in-gap state within a much shorter time than the flat band lifetime of titania. Based on these results, we suggest that calcination under N-rich and O-poor conditions is desirable to eliminate the deep-level states to improve photocatalysis.

  • To study the specific tools for the diagnosis of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) in chicken, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and its presumable conditions were evaluated for the detection of hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) gene of NDV RNA. For these purposes, Kyojeongwon strain of the NDV was propagated in allantoic cavity of SPF embryonating chicken eggs, and viral RNA was extracted from fractionated virus after the allantoic fluids were ultracentrifuged with sucrose gradient. The first-strand cDNA was then made for the HN gene of NDV RNA by reverse transcription at $42^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour using specific primer complementary to the HN gene. The single-stranded cDNA was used as template in the PCR of the HN-DNA, and various conditions of the PCR were evaluated to set up method for the specific detection of the HN-DNA. The PCR conditions promising for the detection of HN gene consist of preheating at $94^{\circ}C$, 5 min, 30 cycles of denaturation at $94^{\circ}C$, 1 min, annealing at $55^{\circ}C$, 1 min and polymerization at $72^{\circ}C$, 2 min, and a cycle of extension at $72^{\circ}C$, 5 min. when NDVs of allantoic fluids without fractionation were applied to the above PCR condition, the HN genes were detected effectively not only from Kyojeongwon but from other velogenic strains such as Herts and a field isolate.

  • Rail clamps are mechanical components installed to fix the container crane to its lower members against wind blast or slip. According to rail clamps should be designed to survive harsh wind loading conditions. In this study, a jaw structure, which is a part of a wedge-typed rail clamp, is optimized with respect to its strength under a severe wind loading condition. According to the classification of structural optimization, the structural optimization of a jaw is included in the category of shape optimization. Conventional structural optimization methods have difficulties in defining complex shape design variables and preventing mesh distortions. To overcome the difficulties, the metamodel using Kriging interpolation method is introduced to replace the true response by an approximate one. This research presents the shape optimization of a jaw using iterative Kriging interpolation models and a simulated annealing algorithm. The new Kriging models are iteratively constructed by refining the former Kriging models. This process is continued until the convergence criteria are satisfied. The optimum results obtained by the suggested method are compared with those obtained by the DOE (design of experiments) and VT (variation technology) methods built in ANSYS WORKBENCH.

  • Transparent oxide semiconductors are increasingly becoming one of good candidates for high efficient channel materials of thin film transistors (TFTs) in large-area display industries. Compare to the conventional hydrogenated amorphous silicon channel layers, solution processed ZnO-TFTs can be simply fabricated at low temperature by just using a spin coating method without vacuum deposition, thus providing low manufacturing cost. Furthermore, solution based oxide TFT exhibits excellent transparency and enables to apply flexible devices. For this reason, this process has been attracting much attention as one fabrication method for oxide channel layer in thin-film transistors (TFTs). But, poor electrical characteristic of these solution based oxide materials still remains one of issuable problems due to oxygen vacancy formed by breaking weak chemical bonds during fabrication. These electrical properties are expected due to the generation of a large number of conducting carriers, resulting in huge electron scattering effect. Therefore, we study a novel technique to effectively improve the electron mobility by applying environmental annealing treatments with various gases to the solution based Li-doped ZnO TFTs. This technique was systematically designed to vary a different lithium ratio in order to confirm the electrical tendency of Li-doped ZnO TFTs. The observations of Scanning Electron Microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy, and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy were performed to investigate structural properties and elemental composition of our samples. In addition, I-V characteristics were carried out by using Keithley 4,200-Semiconductor Characterization System (4,200-SCS) with 4-probe system.

  • Surface passivation using glass powders results in good reliability for high voltage silicon power devices. In this paper Zinc borosilicate glass and Lead borosilicate glass were prepared for the purpose of passivating, and a deposition technique of glass films on the silicon surface by electrophoresis in which acetone is used as a suspension medium has been investigated. Their physical properties were compared using DTA, SEM, XRD, as a function of firing temperature, I can get the fine films of 22${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thickness with Lead borosilicate glass under 300 volts applied, 3 minutes and $700^{\circ}C$ firing temperature. Also I can get the fine films of 17${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thickness with Zinc borosilicate glass under same conditions. As a result of investigation of glass films from which glass layer was removed by placing it in HCl, it has been found that pre-firing and annealing play an important role to achieve uniform and fine glass deposition films. And also it was found that relative dielectric constant is independence of frequency.

  • The current-voltage characteristics at annealed Be-Cu alloy(1.8-2 wt% Be, 0.2 wt% Co+Ni) interfaces have been studied by means of the cyclic voltammetric method. The specimens were annealed in nitrogen gas($N_{2}$) furnace at 36$0^{\circ}C$ for 1.5 hours. After annealing, the vickers hardness(HV) was increased from 210 to 385. The used solutions were distilled water(H$_{2}$O), 10$^{-3}M\;CsNO_{2},10^{-2}M\;KCl,10^{-2}M\;KOH,10^{-4}M\;H_{2}SO_{4}$ aqueous electrolytes, and ethylalcohol ($C_{2}H_{5}OH$), etc. The cyclic voltammograms showed significant current-voltage characteristics between the annealed and unannealed specimens at the same conditions. The age hardening and the related surface potential barrer and dissolution effects have been observed during the whole experimental process. The dissolution process of annealed Be-Cu alloys was effectively retarded by the age hardening phenomenon. The age hardening effect also raised the surface potential barrier of Be-Cu alloys. The interfacial phenomena of Be-Cu alloys seem to be one of good models for understanding the activation process.

  • In order to solve the difficulties of parameter settings in SA algorithm, an improved practical SA algorithm is proposed by employing the threading techniques, appropriate software structures, and dynamic adjustments of temperature parameters. Threads provide a mechanism to realize a parallel processing under a disperse environment by controlling the flux of internal information of an application. Thread services divide a process by multiple processes leading to parallel processing of information to access common data. Therefore, efficient search is achieved by multiple search processes, different initial conditions, and automatic temperature adjustments. The proposed are methods are evaluated, for three types of Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) (random-tour, fractal-tour, and TSPLIB test data)are used for the performance evaluation. The experimental results show that the computational time is 5% decreased comparing to conventional SA algorithm, furthermore there is no need for manual parameter settings. These results also demonstrate that the proposed method is applicable to real-world vehicle routing problems.
