  • The purpose of this study was to establish the range of the body frame size determination for elderly subjects. Anthropometric data were collected from over 60 years old 229 elderly peoples. Three methods for determining frame size were to measure elbow breadth, ankle breadth, and height to wrist circumference ratio. Among the three variables, ankle breadth exhibited the lowest correlation with skinfold thickness and changed little with age. A pairwise comparision among three methods for determining frame size showed that the highest incidence of overall agreement was achieved when the ankle breadth and elbow breadth were compared. This analysis supported that ankle breadth can be used as an indicator of frame size. Small, medium and large categories of ankle breadth were presented depending on whether the measurements were below the 15th, between the 15th and 85th, and above the 85th percentile for ankle breadth.

  • In industrial designing of ready-to-wear shoes, one important factor to consider is that the population has diverse fooot shapes as well as foot length. The general shape of a foot could be represented by "foot ratio", i.e. the ratio of width to length. In this study, we measured several dey aspects of young Korean men's foot, and compared the results with their shoe sizes and general foot shapes. To this end, 172 male subjects were categorized according to their shoe size (small, medium, large) or foot ratio (wide, narrow, intermediate). The statistics of this survey indicated that the people with narrow foot shap have significantly greater foot length compared with the one having wide foot shape. Conversely, subjects having wide foot shape manifested significantly greater foot and ankle girth as well as significantly greater foot breadth. However, different foot shape groups showed no significant differences in heel width, heel ankle girth, instep height, and malleolus height. On the other hand, subjects wearing larger shoe size showed significantly larger foot measurements except instep and ankle heights, whereas subjects with shoe sizes 260 and below measured significantly more narrow heel and lateral metatarsal breadths. The deviation between foot length and dress shoe size(length) was greater in groups with wide foot shape and in groups wearing large shoe sizes. The results of this survey indicated that the subjects with wide foot shape apparently choose a size or two larger shoes for them as a compromise for a better breadth fit.eadth fit.

  • The investigation of the surface areas, volumes and sizes (circumference, length, breadth) changes has been performed on women during menstruation, non-menstruation, pregnancy and post-pregnancy periods. (1) During menstruation and non-menstruation periods: The subjects were 30 healthy women from 19 to 24 years of age. The changes of lower leg areas were measured using the paper replacement method, showing an increase of 0.71% in surface during the menstruation period. The changes of lower 1g volumes were measured by the water replacement method, showing an increase of 1,74% in volume during the menstruation period. The correlation between the surface area changes and the volume changes was of r=0.45. The greatest change among the four parts of the leg was found at the ankle in both experiments. We measured also the foot length(1), the ball of foot girth(2), the foot breadth(3), the instep height (4), the instep girth(5), the ankle girth(6), the calf circumference(7) and we found the greatest changes in(4)=3,92% in(5)=0.79% and in (7) =0.84%. (2) During pregnancy and post-pregnancy periods: The subjects were 3 women, two pregnants(both from the 24th to the 36th week of pregnancy during the experiment) and one post-pregnant(from the second week to the eighth week during the expriment). For the first two subjects, we measured only the last 6 items of the preceding experiments(foot length(1),ball of foot girth(2), (3), (5), (6), (7)), Showing the greatest changes in the instep girth(5) and the calf circumference(7). In the case of the post-pregnant subject, these two items (5) and(7) decreased sharply during the second, third and fourth week and remain approximately the same afterwards.

  • The health of foot is connected with individual's health and affects men's activity. In order to develope comfort socks, both foot size and foot shape must be considered. The purpose of this study was to categorize men's foot shape according to age using men's foot scan data (with 2005 Size Korea). Factor analysis, Cluster analysis, ANOVA, and Duncan's test were performed for statistical analysis of the data by SPSS Win 12.00 program. The results are as follows. 1. Nine factors constituting the men's foot were extracted through factor analysis and those factors comprised 77.7% of total variance. 2. On the basis of the cluster analysis, four different foot shapes were categorized. Cluster 1 was characterized by large in toe and ankle size. Cluster 2 was characterized by short foot length, low foot height, and small foot breadth/girth. Cluster 3 was characterized by large and high in foot height. Cluster 4 was characterized by short in foot length and large in foot breadth/girth. 3. Distribution of four foot shape clusters from 20 to 70 years in age above were categorized. For the 20 to 29 years in age, cluster 2, while for the over 30 years in age cluster 4 or cluster 3 is the most dominant foot type. A foot breadth in the 50 years over is wider size range than that in the below 49 years. The foot figures of elderly men over 60 years were smaller than those of below 60 years.

  • For a ideal construction of shoes, the exact analysis for shape and size of foot is necessary. This study was performed to classify and analyze the foot types of young males and females. For this, methods of cluster analysis, correspondence analysis and value of proportion were used. The subjects were 414 college students and 36 items, weight(1 item), height(8 items), length(6 items), breadth(6 items), girth(7 items), depth(3 items), slope(5 items) on foot were measured. The fundamental results of the study were as follow ; Difference in foot shape between men\`s and women\`s feet was not found below ankle girth. Based on cluster analysis the shapes of foot were classified into five groups, small but relatively slim group, small but relatively barrel group, middle group, large but relatively slim group and large but relatively barrel group. The types of foot had the distinguished dominant characteristics according to sex, weight and height. The results of this study show that there must be the suitable design of shoes for each foot type.

  • Recently, Korean's 3-D foot data have been extensively collected through 5th national anthropometric survey known as 'Size Korea'. In this study, Korean foot shape was investigated and subsequently classified, based on the existing standard for foot shaping. This study analyzed and categorized Korean foot shapes through the following methods. Although the data used in this study were limited to those of Korean adults, major factors affecting the foot shape were deduced and then categorically grouped by the multivariate statistical analysis. For those whose age ranged from 14 to 70, major factors affecting the foot shape for the male were related to foot breadth, ankle thickness, 1st toe shape, malleolus height, heel to top of the foot length, the ratio between toe-side and heel-side and 5th toe shape. For the female, the ball of foot height was added to the above factors. From the factors extracted, the Korean foot shape was categorized into three groups for the male and four groups for the female. They were the ladder type, the inverted triangle type and the square type. For the female, the triangular type was added to the three types. These findings will serve as useful information for the footwear production industry in Korea.

  • This study analyzes characterization and classification of body types of Mongolian women. 100 adult subjects within the 20 to 49 age group were studied. The physical measurements of the research subjects come up to a total of 50 items. Data was statistically analyzed with SPSS program using basic statistics, t-test, one-way ANOV A, Duncan-test, factor analysis and cluster analysis. The conclusions are as follows. In the result of factors analysis in physical measurements of Mongolian women, 7 factors such as on the obesity of body, the vertical size of body, hip length, the bust from back length, the bust from front length, the ankle size and the shoulder size were extracted. The accumulated contributory rate of these was 70.7%. The cluster analysis for the comparison of the body types, by categorizing the body types produced three types. Mongolian women were grouped as those with the short stature and light weight, the medium stature and heavy weight, the tall stature and medium weight. The comparison of 50 items in physical measurements between Korean women and Mongolian women resulted in the differences in 39 items. While the height items including stature between them showed negligible differences, most of the length items relating to breadth, circumference, depth and obesity showed differences, which were big.

  • In the current study, the design methodology has been developed to produce shoe mold for a suitable walking shoes of the general Korean using ANN (Artificial Neural Network). To design the suitable and comfortable shoes for the Korean, the shapes of foots were measured for 513 people. In this research, the foot length, breadth and ankle were considered as design parameters. In order to find the optimal foot shape for the average value of design parameters, the average value of design parameters and the other measurements were used as input and output to the ANN. After training, the various foot measurements were predicted by ANN. Base on the ANN results, the walking shoes were manufactured by considering these measurements and designing a shoe mold. From the results, the proposed method could give a more systematic and feasible means for manufacturing walking shoes with greater usefulness and better generality.

  • This study was to research the characteristics of the body shape of Korean woman farmers by the major crops. Four hundred ninety-five Korean woman farmers from 9 different area such as Kumi, Damyang, Iksan, Injae, Chungju, Choongju, Haman, Whasung, and Whasoon volunteered for this study. Their major crops were the rice, the pepper, the water melon, the strawberry, the wild rocambole, the sweet persimmon, the grapes, the mushroom, and the chrysanthemums. Twelve body angles were measured from archived the somatotype photographs of the front, the side, and the back. Questionnaires of SF-36 and the farmer's symptom, and the farm-work related movements were surveyed. The results were as follows; 1. Farmers had lower health levels in physical role limit, pain, vitality, and physical function than other occupational workers. 2. Most farmers acted the high-risk ergonomics motions when they worked in the farm. 3. There were significantly different on the both shoulder angles, the hip tangential line slope, the hip breadth angel, in frontal ankle-knee angle, the bending back angle, the dropping breast slope, the abdominis media angle, under the abdominis media angle, the glutea angle, under the glutea angle, and the sideward knee angle(p<.05). 4. Farmers cultivating the low plants such as the water melon, the strawberry, and the wild rocambole showed more banded vertebralis and side knee angles. Farmers cultivating the red pepper showed the dropping the left shoulder and O shape legs. Farmers cultivating the fruit trees such as the sweet persimmon and the grapes showed the less banded side knee angles than other farmer groups. 5. On comparing the same age, farmers showed the older's body shape in earlier and much more than the old living in the city.
