The total number of elastic constants of an anisotropic body is 9 and thus it is very difficult to measure these constants experimentally. The number of elastic constants can be reduced if a rock or rock mass is regarded as isotropic or transversely isotropic material. Since only 4 stress-strain relationships can be obtained, it is theoretically impossible to determine all 5 constants from a single uniaxial compression teat. Lekhnitskii overcame this problem by suggesting the fifth equation based on laboratory tests. But his equation is theoretically wrong and does not agree with experimental results. This paper describes the stress-strain relationships and the independent/dependent elastic constants of an anisotropic mass and suggests a testing mothed to determine 5 independent elastic constants for a transversely isotropic rock.
This paper deals with the analysis of rock slope stability using the distinct element method. This method consists in analysis of the interaction of discrete block assemblage delimited by elementary joints, which permits to consider the heterogeneous, anisotropic and discontinuous features of the rock mass. In particular, we were able to show that this method, and especially the BRIG3D software, is an outstanding tool which gives informations of greatest interest in order to analyze the toppling mechanisms. We have confirmed the fundamental role of the rock mass structure with different simulations. In the case of toppling phenomena, the essential parameter is the dip of major discontinuities. It has an influence on the intensity and volume of deformations. The anisotropic and heterogeneous features of the rock mass play also an important role. It is proved by insertion of thick rock bars in the structure or varying rock block sizes in the mass. These models modified considerably the stress distribution and the deformation distribution. Finally, we have analyzed the influence of mechanical parameters such as friction angle and tangential stiffness.

An inhomogeneous and anisotropic rock has different properties at different location. Thus, this refers to any of the properties which we may be measuring. There are two concepts of rock mass, namely, CHILE(Continuous, Homogeneous, Isotropic, Linear Elastic) material and DIANE(Discontinuous, Inhomogeneous, Anisotropic, Non-linear Elastic) rock. The former is essentially the properties of intact rock, the latter is essentially the properties governed by the structure of rock. In geotechnical aspect, the most important parameter is strength of rock or rock mass. In particular, characteristics of strength of rock mass depend upon the orientation of discontinuities And this orientation of discontinuities has different properties at different direction of excavation. Therefore, it needs for characterization of different properties of discontinuity orientation against different direction of excavation.
Many mechanical defects originated from various geological causes make rock mass exhibit anisotropic characteristics. Understanding how the stress distribution occurs in anisotropic rock mass is, therefore, very important for the design of footings on rock and rock structures. In this study, the patterns of elastic stress distribution, developed by acting line load on the surface, in transversely isotropic was investigated. The influence of joint stiffness, joint spacing, and dip angle on the stress distribution was examined. By assuming the Mohr-Coulomb criterion as joint slip condition, the development of joint slip zone was also discussed.

The introduction of geodetic methods of absolute displacement monitoring in tunnels has improved the value of the measurements significantly. By using this method, structurally controlled behavior and influences of an anisotropic rock mass can be determined and the excavation and support adjusted accordingly. In this study cases of tunnel monitoring in anisotropic/heterogeneous rock masses are analyzed, and various anisotrpic behavior of tunnel can be estimated. Because rock anisotropy and heterogeneity can have great influence on tunnel behavior, tunnel design considering rock anisotropy and heterogeneity is needed. Also under construction, feedback must be performed by using face mapping and monitoring to prevent over-deformation and tunnel collapse.
Scaled model tests were performed to evaluate the reinforcement effect of rock bolts in anisotropic rock mass. For this purpose, two tunnel cases were experimented which had different tunnel sizes, rock strengths, anisotropic angles and coefficients of lateral pressure. The fully grouted rock bolts of the D25 deformed bar were modeled as the basting pins with bead and were systematically installed at the roof and the side wall of the model tunnel. As results of the first case experimentations, the unsupported model showed initial crack at the roof of tunnel, but the supported model with rock bolts showed initial crack at the floor of tunnel where rock bolts were not installed. The crack initiating pressure and the maximum pressure of the supported model with rock bolts were 11% and 7% larger than those of the unsupported model, respectively. Moreover, the effect of the existing discontinuities in anisotropic rock mass on the fracture behavior of tunnel was reduced in the supported model, and so the reinforcement effect of rock bolt turned out to be experimentally verified. As results of the second case experimentations considering different support patterns, the crack initiating pressures of models were larger and the reduction ratios of tunnel area according to applied load were smaller as the length and the quantity of rock bolts were larger. Therefore, it was found that the performance of the rock bolts turned out to be improved as they were larger.
The effects of geologic structures such as rock joins and bedding planes on the thermal conductivity of a discontinuous rock mass are studied. The expressions for the equivalent thermal conductivities of jointed rock masses are derived and found to be anisotropic. The degree of anisotropy depends primarily on the thermal properties contrast between the joint phase and surrounding intact rock, the joint density expressed as volume fraction and the inclination angle of the joint. Within the context of 2-dimensional finite element heat transfer scheme, the isotherms around a circular hole are analyzed for both the isotropic and anisotropic rock masses in 3 different thermal boundary conditions. i.e. temperature, heat flux and convection boundary conditions. The temperature in the stratified anisotripic rock mass is greatly influenced by the thermal properties of the rock formation in contact with the heat source. Using the excavation-temperature coupled elastic plastic finite element method, analyzed is the thermo-mechanical stability of a circular opening subjected to 10$0^{\circ}C$ at a depth of 527m. It is found that the thermal stress concentration was enough to deteriorate the stability and form a plastic yield zone around the opening, in contrast to the safety factor greater than 2 resulted form the excavation-only analysis.
Safe underground construction in a rock mass requires adequate ground investigation and effective determination of rock conditions. The estimation of rock mass behavior is difficult, because rock masses are innately anisotropic and heterogeneous at different scales and are affected by various environmental factors. Quantitative rock mass classification systems, such as the Q-system and rock mass rating, are widely used for characterization and engineering design. The measurement of rock classification parameters is subjective and can vary among observers, resulting in questionable accuracy. Geophysical investigation methods, such as seismic surveys, have also been used for ground characterization. Torsional shear wave propagation characteristics in cylindrical rods are equal to that in an infinite media. A probabilistic quantitative relationship between the Q-value and shear wave velocity is thus investigated considering long-wavelength wave propagation in equivalent continuum jointed rock masses. Individual Q-system parameters are correlated with stress-dependent shear wave velocities in jointed rocks using experimental and numerical methods. The relationship between the Q-value and the shear wave velocity is normalized using a defined reference condition. This relationship is further improved using probabilistic analysis to remove unrealistic data and to suggest a range of Q-values for a given wave velocity. The proposed probabilistic Q-value estimation is then compared with field measurements and cross-hole seismic test data to verify its applicability.
In this study, stress difference between isotropic and transversely isotropic rock mass, and planar principal stresses at the periphery of the tunnel in the rock with various ratio of anisotropy were determined theoretically. Stress differences between isotropic and anisotropic calculations at crown. side walls and floor of a tunnel with assumed stress states were analyzed and compare each other by $FLAC^{2D}$, a finite differential element method. As a result, magnitude and direction of principal stresses in the case of ignoring anisotropy were different from those of anisotropic cases, whatever the stress state was. Stress difference increased as the ratio of anisotropy increased. Direction or anisotropy affected stress difference, especially in the cases of anisotropic directions of $45^{\circ}\;and\;135^{\circ}$ of counterclockwise from x direction.
