  • The buoyancy-driven turbulent thermal convection is predicted using an anisotropic hybrid turbulence model, which is incorporated with a low Reynolds k-.epsilon. turbulence model and an anisotropic buoyant part of algebraic stress model(ASM). The numerical predictions are compared with the Davidson's model,(1) the full ASM and the experimental results of Cheesewright et al.(2) All the models are shown to predict good agreements with the experiments for the averaged turbulence quantities. It is found that the effect of an anisotropic part on the Reynolds stress and the turbulent heat fluxes is substantial. In this study, the present hybrid model gives a fairly reasonable prediction in terms of the computational accuracy, convergence and stability. The contribution of an anisotropic buoyant part to turbulent heat fluxes are also scrutinized over the range of Rayleigh numbers $(4.79{\times}10^{10}{\le}Ra{\le}7.46{\times}10^{10}).$

  • During this study, constant stress ratio tests with previous compression anisotropic stress history are performed on compacted decomposed granite soil sampled at Iksan, Jeonbuk. Yielding points are determined from stress-strain curves. The shape and characteristics of compression anisotropic yield curves is examined. In addition, the measured value of yielding curve and stress-strain behavior is predicted by Yasufuku's anisotropic constitutive model based on non-associated flow rule. The main results are summarized as follows : 1) Shape of yielding curves shows almost ellipse but asymmetry with respect to stress path during previous consolidation stress. 2) Yasufuku's anisotropic constitutive model is suitable in evaluation of yielding curves on anisotropic consolidated decomposed granite soil. 3) The predicted stress-strain curve shows reasonable agreement to measured behaviours.

  • A progressive failure analysis procedure for composite laminates is developed in here and in the companion paper. An anisotropic plastic constitutive model for fiber-reinforced composite material, is developed, which is simple and efficient to be implemented into computer program for a predictive analysis procedure of composites. In current development of the constitutive model, an incremental elastic-plastic constitutive model is adopted to represent progressively the nonlinear material behavior of composite materials until a material failure is predicted. An anisotropic initial yield criterion is established that includes the effects of different yield strengths in each material direction, and between tension and compression. Anisotropic work-hardening model and subsequent yield surface are developed to describe material behavior beyond the initial yield under the general loading condition. The current model is implemented into a computer code, which is Predictive Analysis for Composite Structures (PACS), and is presented in the companion paper. The accuracy and efficiency of the anisotropic plastic constitutive model are verified by solving a number of various fiber-reinforced composite laminates with and without geometric discontinuity. The comparisons of the numerical results to the experimental and other numerical results available in the literature indicate the validity and efficiency of the developed model.

  • Nonlinear cross-anisotropic properties of soil is critical for exact numerical simulation. Theoretically, initial cross-anisotropic properties can be evaluated from triaxial tests with bender element tests, and nonlinear cross-anisotropic properties over initial strain level cannot be evaluated from triaxial tests. In this study, a supposed condition among nonlinear cross-anisotropic properties is suggested to calculate nonlinear cross-anisotropic properties from triaxial tests. Maximum strain and incremental strain energy are applied to combine triaxial test results and theoretical normalized shear modulus curve, respectively Based on combined results, nonlinear cross-anisotropic properties are calculated. Numerical simulation for triaxial tests Is carried out to verify the applicability of the supposed condition with calculated cross-anisotropic properties and simplified nonlinear cross-anisotropic model.

  • To overcome weak poinks of the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model when applied to complex turbulent flows, various modified models were proposed. But their effects are confined to special flow fields. They have still some problems. Recently, an anisotropic k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model was also proposed to solve the drawback of the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. This study is concentrated on the evaluation of the anisotropic k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model by the analysis of axisymmetric swirling turbulent flow. Results show that the anisotropic k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model has scarecely the fundamentally physical mechanism of predicting the swirling structure of flow.

  • A computationally efficient numerical scheme is presented for the phase-field model of two-phase systems for anisotropic interfacial energy. The scheme is solved by using a nonlinear multigrid method. When the coefficient for the anisotropic interfacial energy is sufficiently high, the interface of the system shows corners or missing crystallographic orientations. Numerical simulations with high and low anisotropic coefficients show excellent agreement with exact equilibrium shapes. We also present spinodal decomposition, which shows the robustness of the pro-posed scheme.

  • Time reversal (TR) of body waves in fluids and isotropic solids has been used in many applications including ultrasonic NDE. However, the study of the TR method for anisotropic materials is not well established. In this paper, the full reconstruction of the input signal is investigated for anisotropic media using an analytical formulation, called a modular Gaussian beam (MGB) model. The time reversal operation of this model in the frequency domain is done by taking the complex conjugate of the Gaussian amplitude and phase received at the TR mirror position. A narrowband reference signal having a particular frequency and number of cycles is then multiplied and the whole signal is inverse Fourier transformed. The original input signal is seen to be fully restored by the TR process of MGB model and this model can be more generalized to simulate the spatial and temporal focusing effects due to TR process in anisotropic materials.

  • Anisotropic constitutive equations for sintering of metal powder compacts have been formulated from a linear viscous transversely-isotropic model in which an anisotropic sintering stress has been introduced to describe free sintering densification kinetics. The identification of material parameters defined in the model, has been achieved from thermomechanical experiments performed on 316L stainless steel warm-compacted powder in a dilatometer allowing controlled compressive loading.

  • It is an aim of this study to perform extensive numerical study for analyzing the anisotropic turbulence effects on spatial and temporal behaviors of droplet for impinging sprays. The turbulence model of Durbin is used for comparisons with the k-ε model. The turbulence-induced dispersions of droplets are considered to describe the anisotropy of turbulence effectively and spray/wall interactions are simulated using the model of Lee and Ryou. Present study investigates the overall and the internal structures of impinging diesel sprays such as spray shapes, radius and height of wall sprays, Sauter mean diameter (SMD), local droplet velocity, and local gas velocity and compared the results with experimental data by two adopted turbulence models. When the anisotropy effect of turbulence is included, better predictions for both gas and droplet tangential velocities are obtained, compared to the k-ε model. It is concluded that anisotropic effect of turbulence should be considered for simulating impinging diesel sprays.
