Optimization Analysis of angle-ply laminated shells, having one pair of opposite edges supported, are investigated on the basis of the first-order shear deformation theory. The equations of motion of the shell are solved by the use of ritz method. A range of results are presented for composite shells to show the effects of lamination angle and number of layers on natural frequency. In addition, an analysis of the strain energy distributions is used as an aid for the better understanding of the vibration characteristics of the shells.

Vibration characteristics of laminated circular cylindrical shells are investigated using a theoretical procedure developed in the previous papers. Numerical results are presented for a family of graphite-epoxy cylindrical shells with layers of angle-ply and cross-ply laminated either symmetrically or antisymmetrical about the shell middle surface. Effects of the different shell boundary conditions and geometries, as well as number and angle of orientation of the lamina, on the natural frequencies are also demonstrated.
This paper deals with nonlinear asymmetric dynamic buckling of clamped laminated angle-ply composite spherical shells under suddenly applied pressure loads. The formulation is based on first-order shear deformation theory and Lagrange's equation of motion. The nonlinearity due to finite deformation of the shell considering von Karman's assumptions is included in the formulation. The buckling loads are obtained through dynamic response history using Newmark's numerical integration scheme coupled with a Newton-Raphson iteration technique. An axisymmetric curved shell element is used to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the spherical caps. The pressure value beyond which the maximum average displacement response shows significant growth rate in the time history of the shell structure is considered as critical dynamic load. Detailed numerical results are presented to highlight the influence of ply-angle, shell geometric parameter and asymmetric mode on the critical load of spherical caps.

Buckling and vibration of laminated non-circular cylindrical shells with constant thickness and simply supported boundary condition is considered. Governing equations are derived based on the Donnell and Flugge shell theory and Galerkin method is applied for the numerical analysis. Comparisons are made between present results and others. Variations of frequency parameter and buckling load parameter on the change of stacking angle, eccentricity parameter and shell theories are investigated. Conclusion of this study is as follows: (1) General solutions of buckling and vibration of laminated non-circular cylindrical shell are obtained. (2) Frequency parameter is decreased as the initial axial load is increased. (3) In general, frequency and buckling load parameter of laminated non-circular cylindrical shells are decreased as increasing of eccentricity parameter and stacking angle.
This study aims to accurately predict the first ply failure loads of laminated composite hypar shell roofs with different boundary conditions. The geometrically nonlinear finite element method (FEM) is used to analyse different symmetric and anti-symmetric, cross and angle ply shells. The first ply failure loads are obtained through different well-established failure criteria including Puck's criterion along with the serviceability criterion of deflection. The close agreement of the published and present results for different validation problems proves the correctness of the finite element model used in the present study. The effects of edge conditions on first ply failure behavior are discussed critically from practical engineering point of view. Factor of safety values and failure zones are also reported to suggest design and non-destructive monitoring guidelines to practicing engineers. Apart from these, the present study indicates the rank wise relative performances of different shell options. The study establishes that the angle ply laminates in general perform better than the cross ply ones. Among the stacking sequences considered here, three layered symmetric angle ply laminates offer the highest first ply failure load. The probable failure zones on the different shell surfaces, identified in this paper, are the areas where non-destructive health monitoring may be restricted to. The contributions made through this paper are expected to serve as important design aids to engineers engaged in composite hypar shell design and construction.
This paper studies the dynamic behavior of laminated composite circular cylindrical shells interacting with a fluid. The mathematical formulation of the dynamic problem for an elastic body is developed based on the variational principle of virtual displacements and the relations of linear elasticity theory. The behavior of an ideal compressible fluid is described by the potential theory, the equations of which together with boundary conditions are transformed to a weak form. The hydrodynamic pressure exerted by the fluid on the internal surface of the shell is calculated according to the linearized Bernoulli equation. The numerical implementation of the mathematical formulation has been done using the semi-analytical finite element method. The influence of the ply angle and lay-up configurations of laminated composites on the natural vibration frequencies and the hydroelastic stability boundary have been analyzed for shells with different geometrical dimensions and under different kinematic boundary conditions set at their edges. It has been found that the optimal value of the ply angle depends on the level of filling of the shell with a fluid. The obtained results support the view that by choosing the optimal configuration of the layered composite material it is possible to change upwards or downwards the frequency and mode shape, as well as the critical velocity for stability loss over a wide range.
A state-space method is developed to investigate the time-dependent behaviors of an angle-ply cylindrical shell in cylindrical bending with surface-bonded piezoelectric layers. Both the interfacial diffusion and sliding are considered to describe the properties of the imperfect interfaces. Particularly, a matrix reduction technique is adopted to establish the transfer relations between the elastic and piezoelectric layers of the laminated shell. Very different from our previous paper, in which an approximate numerical technique, i.e. power series expansion method, is used to deal with the time-dependent problems, the exact solutions are derived in the present analysis based on the piezoelasticity equations without any assumptions. Numerical results are finally obtained and the effects of imperfect interfaces on the electro-mechanical responses of the laminated shell are discussed.
This paper will expand the third-order shear deformation theory by the double-Fourier series and reduce to the solution of a system of ordinary differential equations in time, which are integrated numerically using Newmark's direct integration method and clarify the undamped dynamic responses for the cross-ply and antisymmetric angle-ply laminated composite plates and shells with simply supported boundary condition. Numerical results for deflections are presented showing the effect of side-to-thickness ratio, aspect ratio, material anisotropy, and lamination scheme.

The results of an experimental and analytical study of composite pressure hull on buckling pressure are presented for URN 300. We predicted the buckling and post buckling analysis of composite laminated cylindrical shell and panel under external compression by using ABAQUS/Standard[Ver 6.4]. To obtain nonlinear static equilibrium solutions for unstable problems, where the load-displacement response can exhibit the type of nonlinear buckling behavior, during periods of the response, the load and/or the displacement may decrease as the solution evolves, used the modified Riks method. Experiments were conducted to verify the validation of present analysis for cross-ply laminated shells. The shells considered in the study have four different lamination patterns, [${\pm}{\Theta}$/0/90]$_{14s}$,[${\pm}{\Theta}_{14}$/$0_{14}$/$90_{14}$],[${\pm}$45/0/90]$_{18s}$ and [/0/90]$_{18s}$. At the result of this study, the optimized ply orientation angle is $75^{\circ}$. The critical load from experiment is 69% of that of numerical analysis, because the fracture of matrix was generated before buckling. So URN 300 is not proper to use at the condition under high external pressure.
Dynamic response of axisymmetric arbitrary laminated composite cylindrical shell of finite length, using three-dimensional elasticity equations are studied. The shell is simply supported at both ends. The highly coupled partial differential equations are reduced to ordinary differential equations (ODE) with variable coefficients by means of trigonometric function expansion in axial direction. For cylindrical shell under dynamic load, the resulting differential equations are solved by Galerkin finite element method, In this solution, the continuity conditions between any two layer is satisfied. It is found that the difference between elasticity solution (ES) and higher order shear deformation theory (HSD) become higher for a symmetric laminations than their unsymmetric counterpart. That is due to the effect of bending-streching coupling. It is also found that due to the discontinuity of inplane stresses at the interface of the laminate, the slope of transverse normal and shear stresses aren't continuous across the interface. For free vibration analysis, through dividing each layer into thin laminas, the variable coefficients in ODE become constants and the resulting equations can be solved exactly. It is shown that the natural frequency of symmetric angle-ply are generally higher than their antisymmetric counterpart. Also the results are in good agreement with similar results found in literatures.
