Assessment of a Phase Doppler Anemometry Technique in Dense Droplet Laden Jet

  • This study represents an assessment of the phase-Doppler technique to the measurements of dense droplet laden jet. High-pressure injection fuel sprays have been investigated to evaluate the use of the Phase-Doppler anemometry (PDA) technique. The critical issue is the stability of the phase-Doppler anemometry technique for dense droplet laden jet such as Diesel fuel spray in order to insure the results from the drop size and velocity measurements are repeatable, consistent, and physically realistic because the validation rate of experimental data is very low due to the thick optical density. The effect of shift frequency is minor, however, the photomultiplier tube (PMT) voltage setting is very sensitive to the data acquisition and noise in dense droplet laden jet. The optimum PMT voltage and shift frequency should be chosen so that the data such as volume flux and drop diameter do not change rapidly.

  • In multiphase flne the bubble size and velocity. To achieve this, one of approaches is to utilize laser phase-Doppler anemometry. However, it was found that the second order refraction has great impact on PDA sizing method when the relative refractive index of media is less than one. In this paper, the problem of second order refraction is investigated and a model of phase-size correlation to eliminate the measurement errors is introduced for bubble sizing. As a result, the model relates the assumption of single scattering mechanism in conventional phase-Doppler anemometry. The results of simulations based on this new model by using Generalized Lorenz Mie Theory (GLMT) are compared with those based on the conventional method. An optimization method for accurately sizing air-bubble in water has been suggested.

  • Sphere anemometry technique is re-visited for low gas velocity measurements during full-scale fire tests. This technique has the advantage of requiring only one channel per sphere for data acquisition, in addition to being cheap and rugged, The results indicate that the technique is useful for small fuel load burns with low radiation levels. For large fuel loads, the usefulness is up to sprinkler activation temperatures.

  • 비충돌형 인젝터로부터 발생하는 액체추진제 분무의 준3차원 구조를 규명하기 위한 연구를 수행하였다. 인젝터 출구 근처에서의 분무 형상을 고속카메라를 사용하여 촬영하였고, 인젝터 분무에서 주기적 흘림현상이 관찰되었다. 또, 이중모드 위상도플러속도계(Dual-mode Phase Doppler Anemometry, DPDA)로 분무특성 매개변수(속도, 직경, 부피유속 등)를 측정하여 인젝터 분무의 공간분포 특성을 파악하였다. 본 실험은 분사압력 17.2~27.6 bar의 조건에서 분사축방향 및 확산방향 거리를 변화시키며 수행하였다.

  • 이중모드 위상도플러속도계(Dual-mode Phase Doppler Anemometry, DPDA)를 이용하여 소형 액체 로켓엔진 인젝터 분무의 미립화 특성을 고찰하였다. 분무액적의 반경방향 이동에 따른 속도, 크기, 수밀도, 부피플럭스 등을 다양한 분사압력에서 측정하여 인젝터 분무의 공간분포 특성을 규명한다. 분사 압력이 증가함에 따라 분무액적의 속도, 난류강도, 수밀도, 그리고 부피플럭스는 증가하지만, 산술평균 직경($D_{10}$)과 분무액적의 증발율에 대한 척도인 Sauter Mean Diameter($D_{32}$)로 표현되는 액적의 크기는 감소하였다. 또, 속도와 부피플럭스는 Sauter 평균직경(Sauter mean diameter, SMD)에 비례하는 것을 알 수 있었다.

  • 액체추진제 추력기에 사용되는 인젝터 분무액적의 2차원 공간분포 특성을 이중모드 위상도플러속도계(dual-mode phase Doppler anemometry, DPDA) 기법을 적용하여 고찰하였다. 분무액적의 속도, 난류강도, Sauter 평균직경(Sauter mean diameter, SMD), 수밀도, 그리고 체적플럭스 등의 분무분열특성 매개변수 변이를 정량화 하여 인젝터 분무의 거시적 거동을 규명한다. 본 연구는 추력기의 성능특성 이해는 물론 새로운 추력기의 설계기반 구축에 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

  • A focus is given to the breakup behavior of spray droplets issuing from a nonimpinging-type injector. The analysis has been carried out experimentally by means of the dual-mode phase Doppler anemometry (DPDA). Spray characteristic parameters in terms of axial velocity, mean diameter, velocity fluctuation, and span (width of the size distribution) of droplets are measured down the geometric axis of a nozzle orifice and on the plane normal to the spray stream with the injection pressure variations. As the injection pressure increases, the velocity and its fluctuation become higher, whereas the droplet sizes get smaller. It is also shown that the magnitudes of those parameters are smoothed out by dispersion when the droplets move downstream as well as outwardly. The atomization process is significantly influenced by the injection pressure rather than the traveling distance in the experimental condition presented.

소형 액체로켓엔진 인젝터의 분무 분열특성에 대한 연료분사압력의 영향 (Effects of Fuel-Injection Pressure on the Spray Breakup Characteristics in Small LRE Injector)

  • Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) 및 Dual-mode Phase Doppler Anemometry(DPDA) 기법을 적용하여 소형 액체로켓엔진에 사용되는 인젝터의 분무특성 규명을 위한 연구를 수행하였다. PIV 측정법으로 순간평면 이미지를 획득하여 분무 거동을 정성적으로 예측하고, 분사각 관련 인젝터 성능평가 기법을 수렵하였다. 또, DPDA 측정법을 통해 액적의 속도와 크기 등의 분무거리에 따른 변이를 정량화하고, 인젝터의 미립화 성능을 관찰하였다. 본 연구의 궁극적인 목적은 분무특성에 대한 명확한 이해를 통해 개발하고자 하는 새로운 인젝터의 설계변수 도출 및 분무성능 평가기준을 마련하기 위함이다.

  • The flame patterns were investigated in an oscillating combustion burner equipped with a proportioning valve. The proportioning valve is driven by a solenoid and has an elastomer part which controls the valve opening area. For characterizing the valve, nozzle exit velocities were measured with a Hot Wire Anemometry. The flame patterns were investigated by direct photographing methods using a high speed camera and a digital camera. The results show that the nozzle exit velocities could be controlled diversely and rose up and fell down abruptly, so the valve seemed appropriate for the application for the oscillating combustion burner. Mushroom shaped and highly wrinkled flames were a typical features of the oscillating combustion burner. As the oscillating intensity of the fuel flow increased, the flame length was shortened.

  • This paper suggests and demonstrates a novel flow measurement technique, tunable AC mode hotwire anemometry that allows simple integration, robust measurement, and extremely high accuracy. The principle and simple theoretical analysis of the technique are shown. To find the optimal frequency at which the phase lag becomes most sensitive to flow speed change, the phase lag was measured scanning the heating frequency from 1 to 100 Hz, while the flow speed of ethanol was increased stepwise from 0 to 10 mm/s. To optimize the sensitivity of technique, the periodic thermal characteristic of the hotwire should be understood and is currently under study.
