The analysis and tests of thin-walled channel frames including nonlinear flexible or semi-rigid connection behaviour is presented. The semi-rigid connection behaviour is modelled using a mathematical approximation of the connection flexibility-moment relationship. Local instability such as local buckling and torsional flexural buckling of the member are included in the analysis. The full response of the frame, up to the collapse load, can be predicted. Experimental investigation was carried out on a series of simple double storey symmetrical frames with the purpose of verifying the accuracy and validity of the analysis. Agreement between the theoretical and experimental results is acceptable. The investigation also shows that connection flexibility and local instability such as local buckling and torsional flexural buckling can affect the behaviour and strength of thin-walled frames significantly. The results can also provide further insight into the advanced study of practical structures where interaction between flexible connections and phenomenon associated with thin-walled members are present.
Experiments are conducted to study bubble flow behavior during the instability of subcooled boiling under uniform and non-uniform transverse heating. The non-uniform heat distribution introduces nonuniform bubble generation and condensation rates on the heated surface, which is different from the uniform heating. These bubble generation and condensation characteristics introduce a non-uniform local pressure distribution in the transverse direction, which creates an extra non-uniform pressure on the flowing bubbles. Therefore, different bubble flow behavior can be observed between uniform and non-uniform heating conditions. In the uniform heating, bubble velocity fluctuations are low, and the bubbles travel straight along the axial direction. In the non-uniform heating, more fluctuation in the bubble velocity occurs at low mass flow rate and high subcooled inlet temperatures, and reverse flow is observed. Additionally, the bubbles show a zigzag trajectory when they pass through the channel, which indicates the existence of cross flow in the transverse direction.
Secondary instability in an obstructed channel is investigated using direct numerical simulation. Flow geometry under consideration is a plane channel with two-dimensional thin obstacles mounted symmetrically in the vertical direction and periodically in the streamwise direction. Flow separation occurs at the tip of the sharp obstacles. As a basic flow, we consider an unsteady periodic solution which results from Hopf bifurcation. Depending on the Reynolds number, the basic flow becomes unstable to three-dimensional disturbances, which results in a chaotic flow. Numerical results obtained are consistent with experimental findings currently available.
The instability of two-phase loop thermosyphons was investigated experimentally and analytically. Three orifice type inserts were used to study the effect of change in the pressure drop in the flow channel of the TLT on the flow instability and temperature fluctuation. It is observed that a decrease in the size of the orifice insert from 3.7 mm (no insert) to 0.71 mm drastically reduced the fluctuation of the temperature, especially at the evaporator section of the TLT. With the orifice type insert of 0.71 mm for the TLT, the overall temperature fluctuation was almost completely eliminated, especially at higher power input to the TLT The analysis based on the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability theory seems to predict reasonable well the loop stability state of the TLT with experimentally determined constant factors.
The characteristics of pressure-drop oscillations(PDO) in boiling channel are studied experimentally. The effects of initial and boundary conditions on PDO are investigated in terms of oscillation period and amplitude. The period and amplitude of PDO are increased with the increase in the compressible volume in surge tank and heat input. However the amplitude of PDO is decreased with fluid temperature under low subcooling condition. Higher initial insurge flowrate resulted in almost invariant oscillation period but lower amplitude. At higher heat input the oscillation of heater wall temperature is significant, whose period is the same as that of pressure-drop instability.
The Saffman-Taylor instability mechanisms in laminar premixed flames in a Hele-Shaw cell are investigated using two-dimensional numerical simulations with Poiseuille assumption for the viscous effect. The baseline calculations considering the Darrieus-Landau and diffusive-thermal instability modes show the results consistent with the classical linear instability theory. With the Saffrnan-Taylor instability mechanism. the overall effect is to enhance the destabilizing mechanism by providing an increased viscous force in the product gas. The linear instability behavior is found to qualitatively similar to the Darrieus-Landau mechanism. However, the results in the nonlinear range demonstrate that there may exist distinct characteristic time scales associated with Darrieus-Landau and Saffman-Taylor mechanisms, such that the latter effect sustains longer in time, contributing to a higher overall flame speed.
A Parametric study is numerically carried out for flow fields in a two-dimensional plane channel with thin obstacles(“baffles and blocks”) mounted symmetrically in the vertical direction and periodically in the streamwise direction. The aim of this investigation is to understand how various geometric conditions influence the critical characteristics and pressure drop. A range of BR(the ratio of baffle interval to channel height) between 1 and 5 is considered. Especially when BR is equal to 3, for which the critical Reynolds number turned out to be minimal, we add blocks in the center region in order to study their destabilizing effects on the flows. It is revealed that the critical Reynolds number is further decreased by the presence of the block.
Oxide semiconductors such as zinc tin oxide (ZTO) or indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) have attracted a lot of research interest owing to their high potential for application as thin film transistors (TFTs) [1,2]. However, the instability of oxide TFTs remains as an obstacle to overcome for practical applications to electronic devices. Several studies have reported that the electrical characteristics of ZnO-based transistors are very sensitive to oxygen, hydrogen, and water [3,4,5]. To improve the reliability issue for the amorphous InGaZnO (a-IGZO) thin-film transistor, back channel passivation layer is essential for the long term bias stability. In this study, we investigated the instability of amorphous indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (IGZO) thin film transistors (TFTs) by the back channel contaminations. The effect of back channel contaminations (humidity or oxygen) on oxide transistor is of importance because it might affect the transistor performance. To remove this environmental condition, we performed vacuum seasoning before the deposition of hybrid passivation layer and acquired improved stability. It was found that vacuum seasoning can remove the back channel contamination if a-IGZO film. Therefore, to achieve highly stable oxide TFTs we suggest that adsorbed chemical gas molecules have to be eliminated from the back-channel prior to forming the passivation layers.

Transparent electronics has been one of the key terminologies forecasting the ubiquitous technology era. Several researchers have thus extensively developed transparent oxide-based thin-film transistors (TFTs) on glass and plastic substrates although in general high voltage operating devices have been mainly studied considering transparent display drivers. However, low voltage operating oxide TFTs with transparent electrodes are very necessary if we are aiming at logic circuit applications, for which transparent complementary or one-type channel inverters are required. The most effective and low power consuming inverter should be a form of complementary p-channel and n-channel transistors but real application of those complementary TFT inverters also requires electrical- and even photo-stabilities. Since p-type oxide TFTs have not been developed yet, we previously adopted organic pentacene TFTs for the p-channel while ZnO TFTs were chosen for n-channel on sputter-deposited $AlO_x$ film. As a result, decent inverting behavior was achieved but some electrical gate instability was unavoidable at the ZnO/$AlO_x$ channel interface. Here, considering such gate instability issues we have designed a unique transparent complementary TFT (CTFTs) inverter structure with top n-ZnO channel and bottom p-pentacene channel based on 12 nm-thin nano-oxide/self assembled monolayer laminated dielectric, which has a large dielectric strength comparable to that of thin film amorphous $Al_2O_3$. Our transparent CTFT inverter well operate under 3 V, demonstrating a maximum voltage gain of ~20, good electrical and even photoelectric stabilities. The device transmittance was over 60 % and this type of transparent inverter has never been reported, to the best of our limited knowledge.

In the construction industry, thin-walled frame elements with very slender open cross-sections and low torsional stiffness are often subjected to a complex loading condition where axial, bending, shear and torsional stresses are present simultaneously. Hence, these often fail in instability even before the yield capacity is reached. One of the most common instability conditions associated with thin-walled structures is Lateral Torsional Buckling (LTB). In this study, a first order Generalized Beam Theory (GBT) formulation and numerical analysis of cold-formed steel lipped channel beams (C80×40×10×1, C90×40×10×1, C100×40×10×1, C80×40×10×1.6, C90×40×10×1.6 and C100×40×10×1.6) subjected to uniform moment is carried out to predict pure Lateral Torsional Buckling (LTB). These results are compared with the Finite Element Analysis of the beams modelled with shell elements using ABAQUS and analytical results based on Euler's buckling formula. The mode wise deformed shape and modal participation factors are obtained for comparison of the responses along with the effect of varying the length of the beam from 2.5 m to 10 m. The deformed shapes of the beam for different modes and GBTUL plots are analyzed for comparative conclusions.
