  • Communication is a process involving a group of interrelated elements working together for the purpose of information transfer. This paper discusses information retrieval as a communication process in the 21st century library. The difficulties associated with access to recorded knowledge through bibliographic control devices have been exacerbated by the interposition of additional encoding processes in the library and further decoding by the users. In addition, the innovation of internet/web has revolutionized the means and mode of communication process in the library by flooding information seekers with information and creating an illusion of self-sufficiency in many users. With these changes in information seeking behaviour and pattern, a cybernetic approach to information retrieval has emerged emphasizing adaptive control mechanisms and feedback processes. This paper argues that libraries should strive to continuously remain relevant by keeping abreast with changes in the behavior of information users. To this end, this paper proposes apomediatic-cybernetic model of communication, which illustrates information retrieval processes for the 21st-century library.

  • With the recent advances in information retrieval, cross-media retrieval has been attracting lot of attention, but several issues remain problems such as constructing effective correlations, calculating similarity between different kinds of media objects. To gain better cross-media retrieval performance, it is crucial to mine the semantic correlations among the heterogeneous multimedia data. This paper introduces a new method for cross-media retrieval which uses ontology to organize different media objects. The experiment results show that the proposed method is effective in cross-media retrieval.

  • In ubiquitous environment, information retrieval using collaborative filtering is a popular technique for reducing information overload. Collaborative filtering systems can produce personal recommendations by computing the similarity between your preference and the one of other people. We integrate the collaboration filtering method and context-aware information retrieval method. The proposed method enables to find some relevant information to specific user's contexts. It aims to makes more effective information retrieval to the users. The proposed method is conceptually comprised of two main tasks. The first task is to tag context tags by automatic tagging technique. The second task is to recommend items for each user's contexts integrating collaborative filtering and information retrieval. We describe a new integration method algorithm and then present a u-commerce application prototype.

  • Players of construction projects proceed with each work process by information gathering, modification and communication. Due to the complex and long-span lifecycle projects increased, it became more important to grasp this mechanism for the successful project performance in construction project. Hence, most project information management systems or knowledge management systems equip information retrieval system. There are two logic to infer the meaning of retrieval target; inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning. The former is based on metadata explaining the target and the later is based on relation between data. To infer the information flow, it is necessary to define the correlation between players and work processes. However, most established information retrieval systems are based on index search system and it is not focused on correlation between data but data itself. Thus, this research aims to research on process of information flow retrieval system for large-scale construction projects.

  • In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a multimedia information system integrating hypermdia, information retrieval, and DBMS technologies. We browse the information space through hypermedia link navigation and also use ad hoc queries for direct retrieval of information from the database. Both the hypermedia and the information retrieval systems are integrated into a database management system (DMBS) so that concurrent edition, update, and retrieval of documents can have the ACID properties of atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability. We will first explain the architecture of the system and then, describe how the hypermedia system is integrated with information retrieval capability, and finally integrated with DBMS capabilities.

  • Node is the semantic unit and a part of structured document. Information retrieval from structured documents offers an opportunity to go subdivided below the document level in search of relevant information, making any element in an structured document a retrievable unit. The node-based document retrieval constitutes several similarity calculating methods and the extended node retrieval method using structure information. Retrieval performance is hardly influenced by the methods for determining document similarity The extended node method outperformed the others as a whole.

  • Retrieval effectiveness is the principal criterion for measuring the performance of an information retrieval system. The effectiveness of a retrieval system depends primarily on the extent to which it can retrieve wanted documents without retrieving unwanted ones. So, ultimately, effectiveness is a function of the relevant and nonrelevant documents retrieved. Consequently, 'relevance' of information to the user's request has become one of the most fundamental concept encountered in the theory of information retrieval. Although there is at present no consensus as to how this notion should be defined, relevance has been widely used as a meaningful quantity and an adequate criterion for measures of the evaluation of retrieval effectiveness. The recall and precision among various parameters based on the 'two-by-two' table (or, contingency table) were major considerations in this paper, because it is assumed that recall and precision are sufficient for the measurement of effectiveness. Accordingly, different concepts of 'relevance' and 'pertinence' of documents to user requests and their proper usages were investigated even though the two terms have unfortunately been used rather loosely in the literature. In addition, a number of variables affecting the recall and precision values were discussed. Some conclusions derived from this study are as follows: Any notion of retrieval effectiveness is based on 'relevance' which itself is extremely difficult to define. Recall and precision are valuable concepts in the study of any information retrieval system. They are, however, not the only criteria by which a system may be judged. The recall-precision curve represents the average performance of any given system, and this may vary quite considerably in particular situations. Therefore, it is possible to some extent to vary the indexing policy, the indexing policy, the indexing language, or the search methodology to improve the performance of the system in terms of recall and precision. The 'inverse relationship' between average recall and precision could be accepted as the 'fundamental law of retrieval', and it should certainly be used as an aid to evaluation. Finally, there is a limit to the performance(in terms of effectiveness) achievable by an information retrieval system. That is : "Perfect retrieval is impossible."

  • The purpose of information retrieval is to help users solve their problems. To fulfill the purpose the user's problem needs to be focused on. The purpose of this study is to identify components and the structure of the user's problem in an academic research environment. From this study it was found that the scientific problem dealt within an academic environment is complicate and the problem is composed of 8 topical and 4 non-topical components. And they could be organized into a stucture. This study has three implications for user-oriented information retrieval. (1) The components and the structure of the problem need to be the framework for the effective information retrieval process and for the evaluation of information retrieval. (2) The research methodology used in this study can be applied to other information service situations and this will result in greater practical implication of a study for more effective information retrieval. And (3) for more effective user-oriented information retrieval, the user needs to be observed and studied in the actual' situation. This study showed that the complicate problem of the actual user can be studied in a systematic way and this resulted in important implications for information retrieval.

  • In order to improve the low accuracy of traditional wireless network health information retrieval methods, a wireless network health information retrieval method is designed based on data mining algorithm. The invalid health information stored in wireless network is filtered by data mapping, and the health information is clustered by data mining algorithm. On this basis, the high-frequency words of health information are classified to realize wireless network health information retrieval. The experimental results show that exactitude of design way is significantly higher than that of the traditional method, which can solve the problem of low accuracy of the traditional wireless network health information retrieval method.
